dear reader, the sg2000 is one of the best guitars i have played.probably one of the most versatile,and great value for money compared to a gibson. it is a shame they ever went out of fashion.i still prefer the sounds SANTANA used to get from the sg2000 than from his presnt PRS.
Hi Guy’s actually Carlos never played an SG2000, what he actually played was a 175 he got Yamaha to build and john birch designed and did the inlay for the first one and Yamaha built a further 599. The reason for this was because Carlos was playing a les Paul at the time and Gibson didn’t want him to have a free guitar (even though he was a rock god) so he said nutz to you guys and went over to Japan (just before the moonflower tour late 75)
didn’t like anything they had to offer so he had the 175 built. Buda inlays and 24 frets aaaah yeah, I hear you say. He then commissioned the SG 2000 which is what most people think Carlos played, A major flaw in the sg 2000 is that the bridge is mounted on a lump of brass, which Carlos informed them that it would encourage sustain, (I’m pretty sure that he was sure it wouldn’t) I mean I wouldn’t want the whole world to copy my sound eh, I have a cherry sg2000 ser 001305 one of the first, and about 10 years ago It I decided to take out the brass lump and replace it with mahogany….WOW What a difference, If you thought it had sustain before and was warm you’re in for a treat. I agree that the Yamaha SG2000 had a far better tone than Santana’s PRS. While the Yamaha was sweet with a long sustain, the PRS seems thin and lacks sustain by comparison. I was somewhat disappointed when he switched. I think it was largely due to the SG being so heavy and hard on his hip.
