Yes, let’s talk about repetitive, recycled and way overrated. 1) Repetitive – hey Kirk, how about some more wah wah pedal, pentatonic licks and double stops. You know, like every solo on his last album? 2) Recycled – At least Yngwie recycles his OWN licks, not Michael Schenker’s. 3) Overrated – Somehow Kirk Hammett manages to win every guitar poll in every major guitar magazine, despite only having average talent. While I would say that none of the individuals of Metallica are overly impressive by themselves, they do form a great team to make some pretty decent music.
But what DOESN’T impress me, is the over-hype of this band and the lack of creativity. From what I’ve seen, at least of their later material, they use worn-out blues-based licks and scales and it is hardly interesting (to me, anyway). While Kirk Hammett does have technical proficiency, the musical knowledge and skill don’t appear to be there. Want a hard rock guitarist who knows his shit? Go look at Marty Friedman (formly of Megadeth).

Hell yeah – I’m with you Metalsaurus Rex. Kirk is one of the few people that is still a good guitar player these dayz. Metallica right now is the only TRUE rock n’ roll band that is popular in the rock world. Kirk is not only the reason why I play guitar but the reason why MANY people play it. So there! Kirk is god!

Ok so I get where you all were coming from. Kirk definitly should have been i n the top 5. but…Vanhalen, over all, is a better guitarist. the fact that he is self taught alone puts him one up on kirks "taught by satriani" background. Here’s my top 5(in order)
