It is my understanding that Tanglewood guitars are fairly common in Canada and the UK but since I don’t have boots on the ground I have no way of knowing for sure. Your Aviator is no longer being produced but it was likely made in either Korea or Indonesia in the 1990’s. Current Tanglewood Acoustic production is out of China.

Value? Hopefully a bit more than what you paid.

    Hey toz71,

You may want to consider perusing the Yamaha guitar catalogs I have uploaded on my website VintAxe.com. I certainly don’t have every Yamaha catalog uploaded yet but there is a pretty good selection available.

Catalog access does cost $10. You decide whether you have a $10 question and if I have literature useful to you.

    good luck,

Agreed, I wish I was pretty enough to buy a country house based on an arpeggiation that writes it’s self. Or maybe that’s clever enough.

I do believe the Tantric crap is the most annoying aspect of his speel. He was a guest on the Opray Winfrey Show here in the States (i.e. the most popular women’s show on the tube) where he claimed to have sex for 6-8 hours at a time. Of course, the women in the audience were quite impressed, but I do have a couple of questions for Sting if I would have been invited to attend.

    1. What exactly are you accomplishing in hour 6 that could not have been accomplished in hour 4?

    2. How exactly do you have all this free time?

    3. Describe the reaction of your sensitive parts that were never designed to accomplish such an astonishing feat.

    4. Has your partner ever suggested that she would rather go for lunch and a drink than continue your pursuit of a place in the Guiness Book of World Records?

    5. Has your partner ever fallen asleep, re-awakened and fallen asleep again during one of your escapades?

As far as Chris Martin goes, I don’t know much about him. I’ll do my homework and catch up with you later. sb

Pointless or not 1BL, I saw it reported on an American music show the other day that Sting makes $2,000 a day from royalties on just one of his songs.

I wish I could write something so pointless!

Wait, maybe there is a point, and hoodwinking a public with a head the consistancy of wet bread is it. sb

    Hey finbar,

The 1980 date fits with the other information you know about your guitar much better than the late 1960’s attribution.

To start with, the American Kay company did not go out of business until 1968. At the time, they had the largest guitar production capacity in the U.S. It makes no sense that they would import guitars at a time they were having difficulty selling their own budget grade production.

After Kay went under, the name was sold to WMI of Chicago. WMI was the largest guitar company in the world at that time. They used the Kay name on beginner grade instruments from Japan (Teisco), not Tawainese imports. I don’t remember anything about guitars being produced in Taiwan until the late 70’s-early 80’s.

So, there is nothing about your instrument that would put it in the late 60’s-early 70’s time frame. I think the 1980 date is correct. This is useful information to me since I was unaware the 80’s Kays were first produced in Taiwan rather than Korea. Thanks 😉

Even a reputable dealer can have a salesman that is either ignorant or anxious to tell a buyer what they want to hear in order to sell a guitar.

Interesting suggestion finbar, however, I haven’t seen any evidence to indicate it is correct.

I checked Kay guitar catalogs from 1966, 1967-68 and 1969-70. There is no mention of a K-2. All of the guitars listed have either 3 or 4 digit model numbers. If Kay were importing K-1 and K-2 Taiwanese made guitars during this period they were not advertising them in their guitar catalogs.

Since these models are not appearing in the Kay literature, how do you know they were being imported? Just curious, I’m always willing to learn. sb

I am obviously way behind on this thread and all the entertainment value may be exhausted but I do have this bit to offer.

GLW, they did make a bass version cleverly titled the “B-1”.

The H-1 was not the most radical guitar design Hondo was offering in 1984-85. Check out the UFO, Hondo’s “Unidentified Fretted Object”.

Besides the guitar, Hondo obviously spared no expense in hiring their Wonder Woman model. Gordy, if you puked in your mouth at the H-1, I suggest you avert your eyes now.

I may be old, but I recall Wonder Woman pushing the frontiers of the costume a bit more than this willing lady.

    Hey Don,

Great news on the Crest Literature, just the kind of esoteric guitar information I find so interesting.

I’ve put together a pretty decent collection of Bently guitar literature on my website VintAxe.com. I have at least 4-5 additional catalogs that I haven’t uploaded since I haven’t been able to determine a firm publication date. Undated literature is such a pain to research!

I look forward to what you discover about Crest. sb

    Hi Deku,

The 230 Hamburg was produced from 1983 to 1991 so your date sounds about right. The Blue Book values the guitar at $600 USD in Excellent condition. sb

    Hey kiss101993,

The object of your lust has yet to appear in the price guides so I can’t give you much help concerning value. I doubt many were actually produced and I’m sure you will be asked to pay handsomely for any one you locate.

The guitar is cool and the stage show was flashly, but musically I don’t see the appeal. Of course, my only exposure is through video footage so maybe you just had to be there. sb

You are right GLW, a picture does help.

tiiaa1 emailed me a picture of her guitar. It turns out the K-2 model designation was used on a 2 pup Kay SG copy built in 1979-80. I think these instruments were actually built in Korea.

When she said K-2, I was thinking of the original K-2 that was produced in the 1930’s. That’s why my initial thought was that the model number didn’t seem right for an electric guitar. I tend to forget about the Korean made Kays marketed in the 1980’s.

    Mystery solved. sb

    Hi tiiaa1,

The low model number doesn’t fit with a Kay Electric guitar. I think I’ll need to see a picture before I can be of much help.

I only visit Guitar Site about once a week. If you want a faster response you can post at my Forum http://www.vintaxe.com.

Not trolling Mods, just doesn’t seem to be much help here for this post.

Yeah 1BL, that’s why I prefaced my response with “according to the number you provided”. It will probably require a hand inspection by a knowledgeable vintage dealer to figure out exactly what this fella has and what it may be worth. Changing those pups is like sanding off a custom finish and repainting with a spray can. Well, maybe not that bad, but you are right, a good bit of value just went down the tube.

Hopefully for Unice, it is just a case of replaced pups on a 67 strat.

    Hi wika,

Your guitar was built in Japan by Kawai sometime in the late 1960’s – early 1970’s. Given that yours has the floral style pickguard, I’d say yours was built in the early 1970’s. They were frequently sold under the Apollo or Kimberly brandnames.

I’ve owned several of these over the years and they are suprisingly nice players that produce a variety of useful tones.

You can see a picture of one of mine here:

    Hi Unice,

I’ve done a bit more research on your Strat using the Patent Number as a guide to identification.

According to the number you have provided, your Strat was built somewhere between 1966 and the first half of 1968.

These patent numbers are documented in A.R. Duchossoir’s book, The Fender Stratocaster. sb
