I would appreciate any history on this line of guitars and the Odessa model in general.I recently aquired one at a flea market and I want to tell you that this is one sweet instrument. Everbody that I have talked to knows nothing about it's history, but I do know that it must of come from a good home,... enough said....;>)

Dixon-Odessa Hummingbird

My mom got me the Hummingbird model for my 13th birthday. I have played this guitar extensively over the years, caring it across the world with me, during my time in the army. It sounds incredible and there's nothing I found a place quite like it. There are better sounding guitars, but this one plays so easily and so smoothly, that I could never part with it.

odessa model d-57 serial no. 00002

Anyone know the value of this guitar?

Odessa acoustic guitar.

I have an Odessa D27 that my ex-wife bought me over 25 years ago for 50 dollars and I wouldn't take 500 for it! I love it! However, I am in need of some info. Can anyone tell me how to read the serial number to obtain the manufacture date? It was old when I got it and I would like to know how old.

Odessa Guitars

Bought a new D-26 in 1978. Does not say Dixon anywhere, just Odessa. No info on where it was made. Sounds great and still plays well.

Odessa Acoustic by Dixon

Hi all, I bought a Dixon: Odessa Model W8-15CE BS recently here in New Zealand that has a pickup in it to enable playing into an amp if want. I too had trouble finding any info & after hours of searching found the following information on the Dixon brand... (hope this helps you all)

DIXON guitars were made in Japan in the early 60's through the early 70's. They were made to last even after World War 3! If you can find one, buy it. Their best models are copies of Martin D35, three piece back. These models have Brazilian rosewood on the back and sides, some are solid, some are not. Needless to say, they are equal if not better to Martins. Their D35 copies fetch around $600.

I did a lot of research several years ago on Dixon guitars when I found one at a local shop and the owner was playing it. He sold it to me for 200 and it sounded great! Was surprised at the quality of construction and sound. The inlays were real and the neck was in a V shape style indicating it was made in the 60's. It took me some time but these guitars were designed by the original designer of Gibson guitars.
There was a dispute over Gibson not noting him as the creator and he was forced out of the business partnership with Gibson leaving him without royalties from Gibson and was told never to build the design again. He went to Japan and created the Dixon brand and upgraded his designs. They sounded better than Gibson but the body shape was modeled after his older ones and soon Gibson took out a lawsuit against him. His company was ruined. Gibson started buying any Dixon guitars they could find and would destroy them in an attempt to erase any memory of Dixon. Only a small amount of guitars survive today because of this and because many would use parts from the cheaper selling Dixons to use on their Gibson guitars.
I was told by a collector that any serious collector would not be found without at least one Dixon guitar lawsuit era. Also if you have one and want to sell it these guitars are worth thousands to the right collector. I have seen some on Ebay and would buy them up if I had the chance. My 628 Model is worth five thousand to private collections. The problem is that Gibson did such a great job erasing them that there are only a few collectors in the country who know anything about them and the real value.
If you have one hold on to it, take the strings off and put it in a case with silica tabs to keep out moisture and oxygen. I am still trying to find the collector I spoke with, since then I have lost his information. These are very Rare guitars and if more knew about this dark little secret the price will go up even more.

Re: Odessa Guitar

I picked up an Odessa D-24 "Dove" about a year ago. Has "Imported by the Dixon Guitar Company" in the soundhole label. All laminate but sounds great and is solidly built. It's also has a 1-7/8" nut width, something I've never seen on the more inexpensive Japanese models. $99 at Guitar Center.

It needed a major cleaning job, replaced the bridge pegs, which crumbled when I tried taking them out to change the strings, with Martin black dots and the tuning machines need to be replaced, I'll find a set of Gibsons eventually. The nut and saddle were replaced with bone. A few minutes of work and GC could have sold it for much more.

Dixon Guitars

I bought brand new a Dixon 12 string DG18-22 Acoustic; I know nothing about the brand name, but the guitar has sounded awesome since the day I bought it. I paid over $800 dollars for it back in 1989. I do believe that Dixon was a sub of Crown Guitars (much like Epiphone is to Gibson or Squire to Fender)

I'm trying to put together some information on this at http://FaustRealms.servegame.com/gtmain/index.html
Any help would be appreciated.

Dixon Guitars

I just got off the phone with my Dad who is soon to turn 80 years old. We were just talking about this which is what prompted me to start looking. He has had a Dixon Hummingbird Acoustic Guitar since the 70's he said he paid around $ 300 for it. I have played this guitar since I was a little boy off and on and it has a Beautiful crisp sound still today. I now play a Taylor 300 series. If anyone on this blog knows guitars? Taylor makes one of the finest out there. I had a choice when I purchased that guitar between Taylor and Martin, and I chose the Taylor after playing both. Not to knock a Martin by any means. They make a fine guitar as well, but I compare the sound of My Taylor to that of his Dixon Hummingbird. That's a big statement !!! but true!! This particular Dixon model is as fine as I have ever played, but I would think that they would be more recognizable in the market place than they are. Unless they don't exist anymore. His closing comment to me was this just a few minutes ago. " I have not played that guitar in 5 years" He took it out of the case and it was still in tune. Top that one!! 5 years holding a tune. That is unbelievable. Hang on to your Dixon and Love playing it. I will play his again someday, but for now. I really want my Dad to keep enjoying it as long as he can. Love ya Dad!!!

I have had the Ogessa sd-05 for several years great guitar for $125.00 (what I paid new) its the only one I play usually and I have several of the "top" guitars. Of course it can't compete with the top end brand names but its close. I will sell for $75.00 plus shipping. Thanks

Sorry about the typo I meant Odessa

Odessa acoustic

Just picked up a sweet Odessa D87 for $50. Has to be about the best guitar deal I've ever found. Made in Japan, solid spruce top, back and sides are mahogany, I don't know if they're solid, and what I think is maple binding. Very pretty guitar, plays good, sounds great. Nice and straight with a ding here and there but I love it, and what they say is true, very hard to find information on it.
