I have an Ovation 1111-4, serial number: C-585. I’m pretty sure it is over 40 years old. If my memory serves me, I had it in high school and I graduated in 1970. My dad gave it to me and it is in new, pristine condition. I gave my son one about 12 years ago when he was in high school. Mine is not for sale, but I would like to know its value.

I have an ovation, purchased it in 1974. Model 1111-4 serial number L-227. Mint condition. The sticker inside does not look like the regular ovation stickers. I bought it new at Johnson Music Studio in Columbia, sc, 1974. I am wondering why the sticker is so plain, but does have the printed ovation logo on the sticker along with the model and serial numbers?

I have one, bought it in 1973 for $185 had it refretted 4 years ago. The repair guy was in awe abouth the guitar, condition and sound. He told me the bad news: it would cost me more to refret the guitar ($200) than I had paid for it. The good news: It is worth about $3000 and wanted to buy it from me! Of course, I still have it!

      1. value of a 1111-4
        Anonymous

        hi,
I was the owner of an original 1111-4 back in the early 70’s. It was stolen from me years later, and I’ve recently replaced it with another one from the same time period in flawless original condition. It cost me $165 on Ebay….so I wouldn’t get too excited about that $3000 price you were given. Currently see one on Craigs locally for $90.
That being said it’s called a Balladeer, the oldest ones had the plain paper oval inside instead of the silvery plastic label and also had some beautiful inlay (marquetry) running down the center back of the neck. Irrespective of monetary value, these guitars play very well and sound rich to my ear. Don’t sell it, play it!

      1. Re: Ovation Model 1235-5 electric
        John

Sold from 1969 – 1971, Ovation Eclipse is part of the Storm series, during that time the body’s of the Storm was made in Germany by Shecter Guitars, Ovation company in Conn recieved a shippment of Storm body’s, the paint job did not meet expectations, so Ovation decided to re-paint them, Ovation in Conn did not have any paint other than the "bowl paint" used on the back of thier Acoustic guitars, so they painted these 100 or so body’s with this very durable paint, they also up-graded the pick-up’s and named these 100 or so the Eclipse. Fantastic guitar and very collectable. Price-wise if in mint (like mine) $1,300 to $1,500.

I e-mailed the Epiphone company to ask about this guitar, because they did not have it on thier site, but have yet to recieve a reply. Will keep you notified.

        1. Ovation 1235-5. B series
          CraigEF

B series is the second batch of 100 made. This batch is a tuned up version of the experimental eclipse a series.
They not retail, if in excellent to mint condition with no hardware changes, re soldered electrons ok. Old Mercury solder dried up a bit, not always. They should retail between $1500 and $1900. ( if a B series, A series add $250 – $500.

The newer D through H maybe $500 to $1000. Most at $900. If you find better pricing, something isn’t right, eclectic changes, which Ovation switched to less expensive Humbuckers in the H series and some older, tuner knobs changed and the ordered less expensive bodies from sketchers. Most of the first 100 will have a 22 ” neck and small body i.e. Mini 335, for that early 60’s.

They all set up nice, and the first few play better than nearly all competitors of the time period and even now. I sold all my Gibsen, Gretch, 335 style.

Have fun. Hock stores, Music go rounds and Guitar centers will treat you like you have a $300 vintage beware! They then turn it to Reveb and get top dollars from collectors.

I have 1235-5 H804 and not sure how many were, 1,000 maybe. The H905 is the highest serial number I’ve have seen. The Eclipse was the 5th model of the Storm Series, hence 1235-5, the last 5 meaning 5th and last ( best ) model. The bowl paint is pretty much indestructible and I actually like the pickup choice more than on the Thunderhead and Tornado counterparts. I bought mine in 1973 and has been in the case since, never played and I’m wanting to sell.

I have an Ovation solidbody electric, don’t know if it’s like yours – I could post a pic if the following description doesn’t ring a bell… Red mahogany body and neck, natural finish, ebony fretboard. Body is of a severely radical ‘cut-away’ style; black/white pickguard extends down to the jack and contains the two pots and two switches (one 2-position, one 3-position). Has two humbuckers, and uses an active preamp, which requires two 9-volt batteries (replaceable through a chrome-plated cast metal plate in the rear of the body.
Don’t know anything about it otherwise. No model or other ID. The serial no. is E 18743, on a chromed cast metal neck plate (the neck is bolt-on, exactly like a Tele or Strat). Headstock has the trad. Ovation style, 3+3 pegs.

Who knows anything about these? Probably it’s just a curiosity, hard to imagine it would be worth much…

I have an Ovation Anniversary model no.1157-7 (so no electrics just a plain old acoustic version). They started making them in 1976 to commemorate ten years in the business and stopped in 1984. Spec wise they are similar to the Custom Legend except they have herringbone purfling and a herringbone pattern on the soundhole rosette. And they have snowflake inlays on the fingerboard too. The Custom legend has pearloid Schaller tuners but they are plain gold plate on the Anniversary. Nice guitars. You are lucky to have one as they are quite rare though not that valuable

I purchased a new Ovation 1657-7 (model number, not serial number) in 1978 in California. I loved that guitar and played till the frets were gone. I was never able to find any information on it when I wanted to sell it about 5 years ago. Other than worn frets, it was in superb condition and I would up selling it on consignment in a mucsic store in Madison Wisconsin around 1996. As I recall I originaly paid $650.00 for it and sold it for $400.00.
I hope this helps you a little. It was an extremely rare guitar as only 150 were made. 10 for every year Ovation had been in business at the time. At least as I recall.

It originally cost $750.00 from Guitar Showcase in San Jose, California and was a B-Day present from my ex-wife in 1979. Yes. I am the original owner. If someone out there wants to make me a serious offer… I’ll sell it!

: I also own an Anniversary. I bought it new in 1978. Over the years I have used it for various music styles from Bluegrass, Country, and Contemporary Christian music. Over the years I have not heard a better sounding guitar at any price. It is apparently worth what someone is willing to pay. I have been offered as much as 4K and been offered a Martin D28 for it. Maybe the reality is only $400 or so, but to me it is priceless. My children may sell it for Pennies when I am gone, but the enjoyment
I get from playing it and the curiosity of others wanting to know what it is and where to get one is why I still have it today. I have the original book and price tag from when I bought it.

This is because it is worth considerably more. I am a guitar salesman specializing in vintage Martin,Yamaha and Ovation models. I would sell this guitar in fair to good condition upwards of 1500.-2000. Don’t let everything you hear from those obviously not qualified upset or decieve you. This person apparently has no real understandin of what a quality vintage instrument sells for now. Until recently his ‘opinion’ may have been right, but the last few years have seen this guitar treble in resale value and very likely will keep rising.

Guys, You are/nt going to believe this but I have a 1657 that is "Mint" condition. My mother bought it for me new and I have had it put up all these years. I would bet that this guitar out of the 150 made, That it is in the top 3 if not the best of shape. I will be glad to send anyone pics of this guitar. Like I said, You won’t believe it. This is a collectors dream.

I have an Ovation 1657 Anniversary edition also. A local guitar shop told me that it was rare and that it was worth about $1700. I don’t play it often enough and the steel strings hurt my fingers. I put it on consignment there, but they couldn’t sell it. Does anyone know what it is really worth?

          Bob

Where is that store? They gave total bs! It was never worth $1700. Its MSRP was $890-990 back in the early 80s. Many of these were sold for around $400 (excellent condition) on eBay.

: I have an 1978 anniversary model 1657 and was looking for more info on it as I’ve never found another until now. I bought mine in around 1997 in New Jersey it has an ebony fret board, gold tunings keys, carved truss cover and bridge, mother of pearl Ovation inlay. I don’t normally go for Ovations but this one sounds warm with great action. It’s my work guitar. I’ve used it for well over 500 shows and still keeps ticking. It would be good to know how many where made if it were 150 then that explains why it’s so hard to get info. Ovation should post it to their website.

          Debi Klausing

I, too, have the same questions that you are asking. I inherited the same guitar from my dad. He purchased it new. The only thing I have been able to find out is that it is a Glenn Campbell Artist Balladeer Anniversary model. I have had one dealer inspect it and tell me that if it were his, he wouldn’t take $3000.00 for it. So, take this info for what it’s worth. I have no idea as to how much stock to put into this ‘appraisal’. Somehow, I have my doubts. Although, I wouldn’t take $10,000.00 for mine. The sentimental value is priceless. Good Luck!

I picked up one of these at a store in Boulder about 5 years ago. Certainly one of the sweetest guitars I have played. Would quite like to find out more about it for future reference. Quite interesting if there are only a hundred or so around!

I own one of this great guitars. I bought it used at Guitar Exchange in S. Diego on 1992 for US$400. The label inside reads "Anniversary model #1657". It’s the most sweet acustic guitar I have never played. Has an amazing acustic and a very sweet and speedy neck. It seems I can’t get any kind of detailed informations about it, even on the Ovationguitars official web. Anyway doesn’t matter! The most important thing is that I enjoy it in owning and, overall, in playing it! Unfortunately, does not play when I plug it into the amplifier. But I am pretty sure it did so when I bought it: is there someone who could give me some suggestion? Thanks in advance to anyone for a help!

            Ross,
I own a 1976 model and you have to change the battery (on mine it is inside the body held in a housing near the volume control). Also, I have had to have my connections resoldered a couple of times (but I used mine in a band for a number of years). It is still the best sounding accoustic I have heard (I still play at church).
            Hope this helps.

Here I am 8 years later. I still have my 10th Anniversarry Model #1657. I still don’t know what yesr it was made although I know they were made btween ’78-’82. It is mint and sound wonderful. I’ve never heard a better sounding Ovation. I still don’t know what it’s worth. The spread sheet shows it at $750 for the 1st year progressively going up to $995 for last ones made. That’s when they were new. I thinking of trading it in for a Godin LG EMG, but i don’t know if I’ll get $400 for it.

I don’t know how that other one got posted. I bought one of these Anniversary Model 1657 new, in 1979. I paid almost $800 bucks for it at E.U. Wurlitzer in Boston. It was more expensive than the Adamas that year. I was told the story of how rare they were, etc. They are quite common and not worth much. In fact, they have lost about 50% of their value over the years. The reasons for this is they made a ton of them and the older electronics in Ovations just can’t hold a candle to the newer stuff.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I LOVE THIS GUITAR. It is the best sounding and looking Ovation I’ve ever played. When I found out the truth about it, I was shocked. I thought I was sitting on a rare vintage guitar.

I’ve learned some things this evening. I’ve had my “Anniversary” Ovation for 15 years. I traded a $200.00 Alvarez for it. According to what I’ve read, mine is 35 to 43 years old. I don’t have the original case. I’ll probably keep it, or ask $625.00 for it. (I had been asking less than that.)

        GER BOYLE

Hi, I purchased my guitar new in Syracuse up state new york in 1982, The guitar is ” THE ANNAVERSARY OVATION (305571) MODEL NUMBER 1657 ” and it is still as good as ever. The quality sound is next to none. Why any one would sell this type guitar is mindboggling unless they needed the cash badly. I had just got the guitar and i was doing a gig in Killarney Co Kerry ireland and as i was setting up the gear at the venue a member of the famous furey”s group saw the guitar and wanted to purchase it from me there and then at whatever price i would want for it,i was blown away by his persistance in wanting to have it but as i only had it three days at that time i was not going to part with it and now so many years have passed i still would not sell it. If you have a rare instrument like The Anneversary 1657,take care of it and pass it down the line within your family.

Yes your son does have a chance to succeed as bass is a simple instrument to learn and doesnt reguire any difficult fingering to keep a beat.

      2. Re: looking for the ultra hardbody (84)
        Richard Evil

The solidbody ovation from the early eighties is called the Ultra GP. GP stands for guitar paul. It was an attempt by ovation to copy the Les Paul design. Solid Mahogany body, Carved maple top, Wraparound hardtail bridge and dual DiMarzio humbuckers. The only other Solid body electrics made by ovation I know of are from the late-seventies and early-eighties. The Breadwinner, and the Viper which was recently reincarnated as an acoustic. I’ve been looking for an Ultr GP for a few years now, before Josh Homme of Q.O.T.S.A appeared with it, and it’s been quite a journey. Almost nobody in the vintage community knows of them and to my knowledge only a few thousand were made, about 90 of which were black. Very rare, and very expensive. Good luck to everyone though, myself included. I hope I’ve been informative.

My search to identify my guitar led me to this posting. My uncle who used to collect guitars gave me an Ovation electric guitar about 15 years ago and told me that it’s not worth much now, but keep it because it will be hot someday. I can’t find any model numbers, only a serial number E-12184. It is black. It has a mono and stereo output. It has that Les Paul look with two rail type humbuckers with a switch above each one to turn the humbucker off. I would like to know if this is the 84 that everyone is looking for. All I know is that this thing plays like a dream and yes everything’s for sale.

: We need to start the mysterious black Ovation solid body club! Mine plays like a dream. It has a deep half moon cutaway at the bottom of the guitar. I have exhausted all known Ovation websites, and stores that carry vintage guitars.

Finally, someone else who has one of these bricks! And they think a Les Paul is heavy. On mine, the paint’s chipped, the pickup wiring, pots, and selector switch are all shot, but it still plays great. Got it when I was around 12 (27 now). It was used then and is really used now. Any mods to yours?

Looking for information on this guitar. By the serial number it was made around 1973 but I haven’t been able to find where Ovation manufactured a "Ultra GS" model. This is a Strat copy with a painted head stock. Any info would be apprecaited. Please e-mail any reply to [email protected] Thanks, Jim

GTX 53 Applause 555228, bought this in late 80s, it has lightning bolt design black, triangular fret markers. Are the pickups worth having new volume and tone controls. It sounds tinny compared to My Hagstrom

I own a black gc3 for 20 years and it’s still one of my favorites to play.Would gladly discuss info about it,there’s not a lot out there.

          1. Hi,sorry no I don’t,mine is in very good condition and I hear and read different opinions about the value. All I can say is,it’s a great guitar all around and I grew quite attached to it.If anybody has any idea of their value, please post it.Thanks.

I have what I think may be one of these bc2 bass guitars in my possession. It’s a red one and I know very little about it. It has two kmd 240 pickups and one kmd 260. I bought it of some random guy for a six pack about 1 year ago! Lol

The body has the pick ups intact, only need to know what kind of potentiometers are needed. e-mail me at [email protected] if you have one of these rare Ovation’s bass guitars with you.

hey there… i bought my BC2 celebrity solid Body bass back in 1987, i still have it today.. black, p&j pickups XK-240, XK-260, the only thing i can tell you is that it is a rare bass they were discontinued around that time, they only made it only one year…they only made very few of them… the company that made them was Kaman Music Company (Ovation) in Korea.. the alder body and was assembled in the United States. The Ovation company at the time was not doing well financially so the went Korean but then stopped production the same year. They made only 3 colors white, black, and red, i heard they may have made one with only the P pickups..i have yet to see one or even a red one. The last time i saw one in very good condition was about 4 years ago and it sold for about $1,300. dollars… i would probably part with mine for about $900. only because it has some dings and scratches. It has been with me all that time and works great, it has a deep bass sound that i like about it and the heavy wood. It is a collectable bass, as far as i see you are the third person who owns one. They are so rare that you cannot even find solid information except in the Ovation.com there is a picture of it in an ad. They sold for approximately $350. dollars new i bought mine as discontinued for $165. in New York. Do you plan to sell it? Take care of it .. it is a gem i am sure that collectors would love to get one. I would love to see yours in a picture send some if you can [email protected] . Thanks for sharing your info. Take care buddy!
