The ESP Guitar Company (Electric Sound Products), located in North Hollywood, California, is a prominent manufacturer of electric guitars and basses.

The company was created by Hisatake Shibuya in 1975 as a chain of music retail stores in Japan. In 1983, ESP started making replacement parts and started making hand-made custom guitars in 1985. In 1986, ESP opened an office in New York City to make custom guitars for American players. In 1996, ESP started a new brand, the LTD. The LTD guitars are similar to ESP guitars and more affordable. According to ESP, LTDs are made on an assembly line in Korea from cheaper materials than ESPs, which are handcrafted in Japan. They still provide the optional custom service which made them in the first place.

ESP found fame by providing guitars for guitarists who went on to become leading exponents of thrash metal music in the 1980s, most famously to Metallica. As a result of these endorsements, ESP has gone on to become one of the largest suppliers of guitars for use in heavy music.

      I have a 1983 white gibson explorer. Same model James used to record ride the lightning. If you dont believe me, go to http://www.encycmet.com and look under james’s equipment history. I dont know if i want to sell it though, because i am a die hard metallica fan.

      hey i have an ESP JH-2 in mint and rarely ever played forsale. i have the full warranty cards, certificate and orignal harshell case. no scratches or dents or anything on this sweet guitar. also it is a very low serial number making it worth a lot. email me if interested.

      Hey try musiciansfriend.com i have been looking around for Hetfield guitars to and 90% of the guitars he plays are Esp and they have no signature series on any of his guitars unless they put on out a few years back there are lots of Kirk hammett guitars flying around. Peace

    I have a 2000 model ESP LTD Explorer. The model number is the EX-350. It has a Floyd Rose double locking tremolo, 2 EMG HZ humbuckers, set neck construction, it is made of mahogany, and it is Black Cherry. It aslo comes with an ESP hardshell case. I am asking for at least $575 for it considering it cost me almost $1000 and I’ve only had it about 4 months. Serious inquiries only please, Thanx.

    Hi, I’m from UK, I’ve recently ordered an ESP-M350 LTD from the State, which will only arrive in another week’s time. I’m so anxiuos an curious. Could anyone here who owned the guitar tell me how it performs? Thanks

      yep, good choice. i spent months looking for the right guitar at the right price. eventually after trying loads of ibanezs, jacksons, and other such pointy things i found a shop in leeds with esp guitars (very few places seem to sell them and if they do, they don’t have many in stock). i’ve since bought a tom anderson drop top, which is in a different leage, but i DID NOT SELL my esp. the thing is a beast, always will be. second hand values of esp guitars is rubbish, because it doesn’t say gibson, fender or ibanez. don’t worry about that though cos you won’t want to sell it. clean tone sounds are not really that good from the humbuckers, generally i whack mine on the single coil if im playing clean. the emg pickups are really designed for one thing. oomf! i have a mesa/boogie dual rec, with a 4×12 cab, a very nice amp i might add. stick that on full blown assult levels of drive and the guitar becomes untouchable for the money. each string rings clear and you can hear every note. the pickups are not the hottest on the market by a long way. i have another guitar with a bill lawrence pickup, (which nuno bettencourt from extreme used) which is the pickup of choice for those screams muted runs, and squeals, you know all that 80/90s amazing 10-minute solo stuff etc. but rhythem and power chords, three letters, e.s.p. it does the business. i use mine for punk like nofx, no use for a name, strung out (does this one best) etc.
      it plays very well all up the neck, and the natural sustain from the neck-thru body construction (a massive reason why i bought a 350 rather than a cheeper one with bolt or glued neck). the floyd-rose is probably the worst part of the guitar, not that its rubbish, its not, but its a licenced model, not an original, and there is masses of difference. if you dont use the locking trem much then its fine, and who cares. if you do you may want to consider getting your local guitar shop to fit an original one. the only other mod i would consider doing is getting it set-up with buzz-feiten tuning system (worth every penny) costs £120 ish, but only chandlers guitars in kew gardens (london) can do it in the uk. read about it at buzzfeiten.com (i think, if not just search for it and read about it!).

      anyway hope this helped.

      Tune-o-Matic Bridge
      2 Volume controls (one for each pickup)
      EMG-60 (Neck)
      EMG-81 (Bridge)
      The scale is 25.5"

It’s yellow,with the strat body,one Pick up in the bridge position,and only one knob.Formerly was yellow,and after was covered in Black elictrical tape.Someone can help me ,please !!! I think it’s a cheap Esp,but I don’t know the correct name !!!

      The Boing guitar was a custom job from ESP, it was later covered in black electrical tape. Sadly there really is no ESP line that is similar to the Boing guitar

    I managed to get hold of a limited Explorer, one of the last in the country (UK), a few months back. At the time, I didn’t have the cash to buy a proper ESP Explorer, well over a grand. However, I’ve now changed the shitty Duncan Designs with kickass EMG 81 and 89s. I’m wondering about how I can change the neck and further upgrade my little beauty. Does anyone know how or where I can get a proper ESP Explorer neck, preferably with some fancy inlays, like Hetfield’s chain of man to wolf?

      I recently got an LTD M50…Its a really cool looking guitar…its nice to play and sounds good…
      The only thing i dont like is that the LTDs Deluxe Humbuckers are weak….but its an overall cool guitar

    this is the first time i have come across this forum and noticed that some of you have questions about james’ ken lawrence explorer. it was built for james by a man named ken lawrence, hence the name "ken lawrence explorer." ken lawrence is a bass guitar player and a very experienced and excelent wood-worker. he makes about 15 basses a year for some of the most respected bass players in the world. the price of his standard basses go up to and over $5000. i doubt that many of you (and me) can afford a custom guitar made by him, since his schedule is quite full with making basses. 15+ hand made guitars a yr is a pretty rigorous schedule. of course if u had the money (james and ken have never mentioned the price of the guitar, although i have seen prices on his other works, a guess-timate would be around 8k+, but i doubt that he would charge james that amount after reading an interview with ken about it) and patience (to wait for a custom guitar when many of his costumers are well known pros) u could get one. the guitar resembles many of ken’s basses, not in body shape, but the beautiful woods and headstock shape, although james’ guitar has a slight modification on the headstocks of most of ken’s basses (it was changed slightly to look like the "M" in Metallica). there is a website about ken’s basses, but unfortunatly it is down for construction, when its back up i’ll post the URL here, because his basses r truly works of art. any questions feel free to ask..
