For all of you out there who say that Page, SRV, Van Halen, or even Hendrix is the best guitarist player out there… listen to other styles of music. My personal favorite is Paco de Lucia or Al di Meola… these guys have MUSICALITY beyond belief, fluidity, supreme control of the instrument, and godly technique. Their hands move just as fast, if not faster than many of those mentioned out there. Oh, and they aren’t shredding a metal-based or some pentatonic based scale… they are playing crazy arpegios and scale runs based on musically complex flamenco-esque chord structures that involve module changes, 9ths, 11ths, and 13th chords… Have you all ever heard of music theory? That in my mind is way more important than shred speed – it allows you to transcend beyond the basic scales and same sounding crap that’s always played in metal. It facilitates musicality, improvisation, and pretty much musical genius. I am an American and love rock as much as the next guy, but come on – most of the guitarists out there can’t match up to Paco, di Meola, or John McLaughlin … true musical geniuses. They are to guitar what Perlman is to the violin or yoyo ma to the cello.
Keith Scott has been playing and recording with Bryan for 26 years. Anyone who has been to a show will know that it just wouldn’t be the same without Keith. The guy is a total legend and to many fans is more than just BA’s right-hand man. He can deliver a guitar solo that only a few musicians in the world have the talent to do and has created his own signature guitar style.
: I think Yngwie Malmsteen is the best guitarist as he gives the best live performance and got full of neo-classical songs! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VX0PgRb_u60
amazing solo!!
: I think Yngwie Malmsteen is the best guitarist as he gives the best live performance and got full of neo-classical songs!
Yes I’m the best!! I’m the fastest and i have the greatest solos. I’m a god.

um… he made me play guitar. He is really my only true influence i’ve found. The guy plays like… yeah god.. he can practically sleep while playing, and it’s still the best. His shapes and patterns just make so much sense.. they’re amazing
u guys sound like a bunch of girls blowing each others’ skirts up, just shut the hell up already and watch Stevie Ray Vaughan one time and you will know who the best guitarest is!!!!he is so underrated…..he should b #1
He is the best in the world in my opinion. All of his songs were original and the material he wrote for Led Zeppelin was superb. His skill was endless also.

Hey man you really don’t know much about guitar playing or the history of rock do you? Whilst Jimmy was a great GUITARIST he was a great guitar PLAYER. The passion he displayed was second only to few but when you say his skill was endless then you really are talking crap. Please make sure you know your facts and don’t go blabbing around the place until you do. You make yourself look like an idiot.
: He is the best in the world in my opinion. All of his songs were original and the material he wrote for Led Zeppelin was superb. His skill was endless also.
Hendrix is by far the best and if you think he was always skunked up he was amazing before he was skunked up he just looked different he is and always will be the best
hey i love all the guitarist mentioned in this topic but none of them r anywhere near being the best guitarist in the world and i think the quwstion iself is stupid.
the best guitarist is probably some 60 year old man who’s bin playing in his room for 30 years non stop, who knows and who cares just because u can play guitar fast doesn’t make ur music better.
and i see alot of stuff saying vai it technically the best when he really isn’t. alan holdsworth is alot more technical than him and that’s a fact even stevie would agree(alan being one of stevie favorite guitarists)
and pat metheny, one of the greats guitarists and musicians in the world, has 16! grammys and 4 golden globes he holds the world record for the most grammys which beats vai’s 2 so i don’t know why you r making a big deal out of it
Steve Vai is the best guitarist who has ever lived.
Vai was trained under Joe Satriani for nearly a decade during his teenage years and trained under Zappa during his stay at Berklee School of Music. Zappa affectionately dubbed Vai his "little Italian virtuoso", and also said that Vai was by far the best guitarist he had ever heard. Steve played in the David Lee Roth Band in mid-80’s and fired out two multi-platinum albums with the band… two of the hit singles "Yankee Rose" and "Tobacco Road" are known to this very day for the unbelievable riffery laid down by Vai. Also during this time he starred on the movie "Crossroads", where two of his tracks "Eugene’s Trick Bag" and "Head-Cuttin’ Duel" showcase Vai’s shredding prowess… I daresay that the two tracks from Crossroads contain the most impressive pure technical guitar work I have ever come across… like nothing Malmsteen or MichaelAngelo have ever produced. After five years with DLR, Vai bailed and joined Whitesnake for a year, and then left to start his solo career. After several semi-successful solo albums, he released "Passion and Warfare", which is largely considered among the guitar community to be the best virtuoso guitar album ever produced, with "For the Love of God" headlining quite a few noteworthy numbers. Since, he has undertaken a wide array of work… movies, video game soundtracks, cover records, etc. etc. etc. Steve Vai is hands down the most well-known and respected studio guitarist today… and we haven’t seen the last of him.
Facts:
– Vai is a two-time Grammy winner and 12-time nominee. He won in 1994 for Best Rock Instrumental for a cover of Zappa’s "Sofa" and won as a producer in 2001.
– Vai has the fastest ever metrometered recording at 21 notes/second. The fastest Malmsteen has officially reached I believe is 17.
– Vai played lead guitar for many tracks on XBOX’s famous Halo 2 video game, including the title theme song alongside a full orchestra composed by Marty O’Donnell.
– What’s more, Vai is set to produce the entire Halo 3 soundtrack and New Line Entertainment is looking to Vai to produce the soundtrack to the Halo movie which is in production, to be directed by Peter Jackson of Lord of the Rings fame.
– Vai owns three studios and is a well-known producer and keyboardist.
– AND FINALLY – the coolest thing about Vai? check this…
Before an 80’s tour with David Lee Roth, Vai publically challenged potential concert-goers by asking them to bring in the most complicated pieces of classical score they could find. He said if he couldn’t sight-read the score on the spot and play it flawlessly the first time through, he would pay the person who brought in the sheet music. Fans reportedly brought in full copies of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, a half-hour violin concierto.
He never lost the bet…. that’s straight f*cking talent.

Now boys, stop and think real hard. Think about the artist’s contribution to the guitar world. My definition of the greatest is the one who has given us the MOST pure guitar music. There are, and have been many great ones, but Chet Atkins tops them all. He gave us over 100 albums of total instrumental guitar music. Who has even come close to that?

I agree : from Paco de Lucia to Birelli Lagrène, and many others, Europe has the best! They are much more inventive and able to create a personnal sound and not just doing a kind of boring virtuosity like Vai .
Personnel taste! It’s like trying to solve a paradox. Each guitarist its good in its own way,and I’m sure that whatever level you are you always learn just like you can learn from an toodler. Not this US versus Europe, aren’t we talking about music? Some may sound different from due to their background and that’s amazing to see and ear.Music has no border. Each musician seek inspiration from others no matter how good or bad you think they are!Enjoy them while you can!
