And if you want even more speed Steve vai Hit 12 notes in a quater second when he played Tender surrender in Australia. It is an unofficial record but it is there. Steve has swept an amazing 32 notes in a second as well. Petrucci is definatly not the fastest because 45 notes in three seconds equals 15 notes in one second. Joe satriani can do 18 as can kirk hammet. Even yngwie malmsteen can hit 16. i Can pick 14 very cleanly and it is not the hardest thing to do.

Petrucci who? Ha Steve vai is by far a better guitarist then john. Ive heard petrucci in one of his solos in when he played a song with his band dream theatre. It sucked. His picking was not fast (i am around the same threshold) his melodic vocabulary was poor and he had the worst timing.
And dont get the idea that i havent heard any petrucci. I learnt all his licks and favourite scales in guitar techniqes magazene. Steve vai has got so much more skill and control over the guitar then John. paul gilbert is a damn good guitarist but Allan holdsworth beats him for speed and arpeggios.
