A Hutchins guitar/mando. I’m sure it’s useful and all, but not pretty:

Sorry to link to the auction; uploading the pic didn’t work for me.

Hi Jimmy, sorry to take so long; I’m in Spain on vac with dodgy internet provision. I’m also considering a ’51P + Telebucker project with black hardware. These people in the UK sell the black ashtray:

They say they’ll post worldwide but, if they quote a silly shipping price, I can get it to you myself if the price of the unit seems fair to you.

Covering a Washburn with various bass players cut out of magazines. Tasteful. My favorite is “help, I’m trapped between two pickups!”

Sorry about the huge pics – straight off the auction – but this is a new one, I think. Apart from looking like a massive arse, that neck join appears to be skewed. My bet is a carver with no idea of guitar building has come up with this design.

I’ve not tried them, but the GFS pups are well regarded for the price, according to people whose ops I trust. Interested to hear from anyone who’s tried the pedals.

AFAIK, Jimmy, it’s not a question of grounding the pup and pots to the bridge – you need to ground the strings to the amp to stop them being great, long, receivers of extraneous noise. The only other way I can think of is to have a strap dangling down from a right-across string tree, which would look a bit naff.

Sorry, can’t think of an alternative to drilling the hole 🙁

Sadly, Scott, I think that playable ad for anti-fungal foot cream has appeared in a previous year. As for your other one, I confess I was thinking “OK, it’s not pretty, but why flag up… oh, crikey – it’s a Gibson 😯 ”

I wonder how much that is meant to cost? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder of a large wad. There is a TV ad that Tim would know, “Should’ve gone to Specsavers” 🙂

but could you overtake Leonard and Sheldon’s expertise at “Rock Band” with it?

Ah yes, I know of the 3 Stooges and now feel a little silly although not as much as if it were, say, the Marx brothers (quite funny films although disappointingly light on explaining Das Kapital or The Communist Manifesto). As you so kindly provided me with the getout, the Zon basses threw me off the scent.

I mentioned on another thread that I’m a slow (music) reader; it took an embarrassing number of seconds before I got the Jaws joke. Tied it neatly with the bloke playing the surfboard-shaped guitar. Wouldn’t want to play that sitting on a yacht; from below, his fretboard thrashing might be mistaken for an injured turtle…

And that last guitar reminded me of another cultural export that has come over the pond; Hardcore Pawn. I can just see Les and Seth’s faces as that one comes through the door.
    EDIT: Just noticed it’s 8-strings 😯 .

Thanks, Dale. For anyone just passing, Maplebaby has been doing these for many years and if you’re looking for great playing, tasty guitars and – best of all – clear, step by step instruction on how to play classic anthems then you should hook up to “ToneDr” on Youtube

Must be a few weekend warriors and wedding players that owe you a beer from their gig money by now, eh Dale? I was asked to do a covers gig a while ago and people like you on the yootoob are a Godsend to people like me (slow music readers with bad ears 🙂 ). Hope your son’s still hitting those drums – he must be frighteningly good by now, seeing as he was scarily good at 10.

😆 , those are creative finds Scott. The oversized acoustic reminds me of my avatar and those three guys, 😯 . You’d think with those Zons (very outside our price brackets), they’d afford some decent clobber.

I’ve had my av for a long time. I’m quite tempted to change to that one (or maybe – sacrilege – use it on another forum I sometimes yak on)

😆 , ha ha ha, I want one. In left. With 5 strings. Can’t have too many knobs. Wonder if the seller’s getting rid because he just can’t find the right tone?

Yep, it’s a previous (and very scary) contestant. Some guitarists like to make love to their guitars…

The funny thing is how rarely a Rondo instrument (SX, Brice, Douglas) comes up s/h on Craig’s list or ebay. From what I read on fora, those who buy them as a starter or a backup tend to keep them; maybe upgrading the parts. There are a couple of bassists on Yootoob (Coopy is my fave) who get them in pawnstores, stick in a Chinese dirt-cheap preamp and maybe a beefier bridge (tbf, the US Fenders have awful tin bridges) and really make them fly. Just type “modified SX” into Youtube’s search.

I’ve long kept them in mind but the shipping to Blighty makes it less worthwhile. Back in the noughties, I think they had a Korean place make them but it’s now China. Proper woods and the CNC routers should make it a minor setup at most and, I’ve read, Kurt at Rondo has refunded some right gripers who really should have given a bit of slack for the price.

Their Tele guitars are also easy candidates for a headstock mod if it bothered enough.

That’s a great little round up, Jason and I don’t disagree with a word of it. Hopefully, Scott (US Gold) will have a read as he’s in the market. The Yamaha and Ibanez are worth considering if the “trad” look is unimportant or not one’s thing. Rondo’s SX Ursa range – not just the short scale – has some outstanding bargains for the price point. Unfortunately, they’ve changed the headstock (presumably under Fender pressure) to something quite ugleee – making 2nd hand SXs an even better buy.

If I were Stateside, I’d be very tempted by their Douglas Pisces (’54 P style or “Sting” bass), put in a Fender RI pup and get the bandsaw out to fashion a Tele-like headstock.
