TimParticipant
He was quite ‘riffy’ but this was a band which, for the most part, had no rythyhm guitar input at all, filling the gap between Mitch and Jimi can’t have been easy, even for a demoted lead player!
Billy Cox was sound in the Band of Gipsies but by then you had Bongos, other guitars, and Jimi knows what else to work around, which I always feel detracted from the actual talent on display by the core players.Pet subject in case you hadn’t guessed!
Tim.
EDIT: you said ‘good choices’ as opposed to ‘Sex Pistols, what the…’
TimParticipantThat said, I love my current bass bought for £200 (which I split with my mum back in ’98) an Aria ProII MAB 20, passive, PJ pick-ups, maple neck, rosewood finger board, suprisingly light body, black body, headstock and hardware. I’ve given the body a satin finish as my fiancee kept polishing it before gigs so I looked like a total…with my nice shiny bass. played through a Boss LMB3 straight to the amp, PA, desk, whatever is required.
The end, what were you saying about us hijacking? sorry people!Tim.
TimParticipantI don’t think most bassists are obsessive enough about our gear to support a thread like this, I play what I can afford, hence I’ve never actually ‘owned’ my amp, although its been in my possession for about 9 years! It still belongs to my old guitarist.

TimParticipantI’ve got a rating!!! I’ve posted enough to get a rating!!! that never happens to me on forums I always get bored and forget to go back. this must be particularly exciting…
TimParticipantWell, as you should know, its good to keep nice and tight with the drummer.
TimParticipantI was born in ’81 but I’m really struggling to cut my 60’s/70’s influences down to a top 5, I think I’ve decided on the following:
Jimi Hendrix Experience
Bob Marley and the Wailers
Black Sabbath
David Bowie
Sex PistolsBear in mind I’m a bassist, when I say ‘the experience ‘, and much as I love Jimi Hendrix as a guitarist, its the way the rhythm section held together and provided the structure for Jimi to improvise over, the plain simple rhythm of Noel Redding’s bass which allowed Jimi to fly off the groove but always find it again in time for the vocal was perfection to my ears.
Tim.
TimParticipantMaybe I should post and then drink…sorry about that!
I’d still go for Gibson though.

TimParticipantSometimes in life we come across these tough descisions, what sounds better, a 1970 Dodge challenger (gibson) or a cat on the spin cycle (fender) and really its down to personal preference, I prefer the dodge myself…but then again I’m a bassist, so you can ignore me entirely.
Tim.
TimParticipantIs that swearing in the USA or even Surrey etc? Sorry if it is,
Tim..X
TimParticipantI have to disagree, every morning when I wake up to my (at the moment) crappy little little existence, I think…well, at least I woke up with Phil Collins…
August 31, 2005 at 4:11 am in reply to: The Worst Colour/Finish/Detail on a guitar – post them in. #68420TimParticipantUnfortunately I’ve since covered (bodyfillered) the evidence but I’ve got an Epiphone SG which my freind carved a 5-10mm DEEP lizard into which he then painted blue and gold! His arguement was that the previous owner scratched his girlfreinds name into it and he had to remove it. It was the grunge era…
TimParticipantWhen we gigged I used to have my regular practice combo, Peavey TNT 150 (1×15), behind me angled at me and the drummer, with a DI to the PA, monitors mainly played guitar and vocal, this seemed to work from pubs to (small) open air festivals with the various volumes adjusted.
Tim.
TimParticipantI’m a newbie and haven’t introduced myself, sorry, I’m Tim, but this thread seemed to be mising a certain Mitch Mitchell, Noel Redding etc…
