I use a free program called ScaleTrainer http://www.ecogneato.com/products/stge/stge_bv_product.html that samples my guitar through my computers sound card. It shows my whats right and wrong for a (scale/mode/key combination). There are right and wrong notes, if you play one that doesn’t match with the chords you are playing then it sounds off.

It illustrates how modes work and relate to each other.

using fret board flash cards, is better than tabs, and is a lot more personal than a YouTube video. -
