Sorry MrByngBell. I was referring to practicing alternation on each string. I would hope the the extreme awkwardness of the technique you mentioned would alert the aspiring player to the fact that something was wrong. This is what I was talking about in the form of an ascending major scale. Please excuse the primitive diagram – I have never posted tab. on the web before. u’s and d’s for up and down and numbers for the tones of the scale. The first note on each string is played by the index finger and the last by the pinky. I realize that this somewhat violates the rules of position playing, but you can’t (shouldn’t) shred with sheet music.

    —|——–|———|—-2d–|——-|—-3u—|—4d–|—etc.
    —|——–|———|—6d—|——-|—-7u–|-8(1)d-|——
    -N|——–|—3d—|—4u—|——-|—-5d–|——–|——
    -U|——–|—7 d–|–8(1)u-|——-|—2d—|——-|——-
    -T |–4d—|——–|—5u—|——-|—6d—|——-|——-
    —|–1d—|——–|—2u—|——-|—3d—|——-|——-

I’m not sure I understand what this is all about, but I too was once cursed with a flighty “A” finger. The solution? Endless scales played with three notes on each string while observing strict alternation with the pick. At first my scales were painfully slow and choppy, but after a year I was able to wail all over the place with a well trained pinky in the mix. You seem angry, so you might want to explore the sadness of the harmonic minor scale or even, dare I suggest, the diabolical Phrygian mode. Good luck – tear it up!

I would advise you to head down to your local music store. They should be able to help you out with A) the name of a qualified guitar repair person and B) guitar lessons. New and used guitars often need to be “set up”. This involves simple adjustments to the neck and bridge and a new set of strings – your new guitar should be as comfortable and “playable” as possible. A set up job should cost around $30 or less. One or two sessions with a guitar teacher will give you the basics on how to string, tune, and care for your instrument and an understanding of the switches and knobs. Good Luck!

Not to be overlooked – J. Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. and Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age are far more creative and talented than some of the guys listed in the previous 8 pages. Also despite having gone totally insane and despite having recently produced a bunch of questionable material, Dave Navarro circa Jane’s Addiction was an outstanding guitarist.

GEEEEZ! I guess this is the opposite. Although I once owned 9 guitars at once (fenders and charvels), I got sick of all the cases laying around and a normal person can really only play one guitar at a time. I play (hack) on these 6ers all the time and my 2 sad little electrics have accounted for thousands of $$$ from serving up crap to dancing drunks. The paisley is actually starting to show some nice wear on the fingerboard and is coming up on a fret job. The Hag was a gift from a friend and its fate is yet to be determined – Yo no comprendo el basso. I’m starting to think (once again) that I need more guitars!

Outstanding, Michael! That’s the coolest (strangest) P-Bass that I’ve ever seen. Can you provide us with a brief history of the instrument?

Re: a Ross or a Boss???

While in highschool in the late ’80s, my guitar playing friends and I all seemed to have one of these:

They weren’t bad at low levels for overdriving an amp, but if you cranked them up they sounded terrible. I also had a ProCo Rat that, in my opionion, sounded like crap.

I live in a small mining town in Northern Minnesota, and there are some pretty tough crowds in the local bars. I’ve probably been tempting fate by wielding the pink strat for all these years. I though for a moment that if I could handle the meth freaks in our local pubs, I could easily stand up to the North London crowd. Then, I remembered that my only experience with socialists is occasional contact with friendly Canadians and that you vicious Sids would probably eat me alive!

As for the green knob on the strat, the drummer from my band in college procured several large and multicolored sheets of the adhesive-backed reflective material from which road signs are made. We proceeded to cut the stuff up and paste it all over our instruments – don’t try this at home because it’s a pain in the a$$ to remove! Aluminum foil, duct tape, and green knobs were added for maximum effect. This was my first trio and I tried really hard to step up to the task. Now, 12 years later I listen to some of those old tapes and marvel at the guy on guitar. In those days I had nothing and I was perpetually stoned and pissed off. I’ve found out now that comfort and prosperity equals mediocre guitar playing. The green knob remains to remind me that I didn’t always suck at playing guitar.

I made the mistake of trying to save like $5 by purchasing a DOD FX64 Ice Box Chorus Pedal instead of the BOSS equivalent. The depth and level have to be set on 10 to get ANY chorus at all – JUNK! What’s worse is that before this unfortunate purchase, I talked to a guy from my hometown who worked for Digitech in the early 90’s. He said that the general feeling on the assembly line was that they were producing a second rate product.

I also own a solid state Fender Deluxe 112 amp that has all the warmth of a frozen turd. Its only redeeming quality is that I accidentally backed into it with my truck and it still works. Cheap and Loud!

Over the course of the last 17 years, I’ve absorbed a fair amount of abuse over the color of my Stratocaster. “Big pink Hondo” and “wallpapered wonder” are just a few of the slams I’ve had to endure.

Regarding my band’s gig last Saturday, I’ve always felt very strongly that a profitable musical performance in not necessarily a good musical performance. Regarding all the intros, leads, and fills that I have to play; I’m able to go home for my lunch break everyday where I spend 45 minutes pacing around the kitchen with my guitar going over the parts again and again. Practice makes perfect.

In an aside, one of our best friends (and former bass player) refused to drive up north to see our gig last Saturday, and the excuse he offered for his absence was totally lame. Our current bass player got to the farm early and created an effigy of our missing pal. Potato Dan spent the whole weekend with us, posed for tons of photos, and took the blame for everything that went wrong. We found him on the floor of the bar on Sunday morning stabbed with 30 plastic cocktail swords and missing an eye and a leg. Bastard!

I don’t know what this has to do with guitar playing, but it was pretty darned funny!

MINI GIG REPORT – sorry if this is pretentious. Our singer/rhythm player and drummer drove up from Minneapolis on Friday afternoon and rehearsal started at 5:30 p.m. We played through our entire set list (over 60 songs – many two or three times) and completed rehearsal at 3:30 a.m. – wow! We all live 180 miles away from each other, so we have to play as much as possible when we’re together. Our practice space is a garage at our singer’s dad’s “farm” out in the woods = high volume settings and no complaints from neighbors.

We met up at the farm again on Saturday around noon and went through some more songs until 4:00 p.m. All our gear was at the bar and set up by 6:00 p.m. We went on at 9:30 p.m.

Three songs into the first set, the drummer’s bass pedal broke – high end D.W. hardware my A$$! He actually stopped playing in the middle of the song and started to mess with it. ARRGHHHH! It came apart one more time before the night was over. Then, one of the mics started to feedback (it’s the drummers PA system). On top of this, our singer was having trouble with his voice and was missing a lot of high notes. By the end of the first set, I was totally off my game – deer in the headlights sort of stuff. I wasn’t able to get into a groove until the middle of the last set.

I thought we sucked, but the bar owner was quite happy. Most of his regular patrons were at their summer cabins / cottages for the long weekend and this was one of the busiest Memorial Day Weekends he could remember. He felt that we drew a large crowd and asked when we could come back. Unbelievable!.

High points of the evening – our version of the Supersucker’s version of Hey Ya; Jet’s 123 (not my pick); Song2 (as always); and our version of Dolly Parton’s 9to5 with massive Mutron and wha.

Low points of the evening – a drunken bass player, drumming issues (including a drunk chick who kept asking if she could sit on the drummers lap and also kept yelling out “Takin’ Care of Business”), and my out of control nerves.

Thankfully, the good outweighed the bad, we got paid, and we played super loud. Rock on!
