I’m of the school of thought that anything COSM is automatically bad. As a working musician, I can tell you that I’ve never heard anyone get really good tone out of a Boss multi-unit. If you’re looking for a processed-sounding “good enough” sort of sound, get the Boss; but if you’re looking for really good tone and all the enhanced sonic qualities that come from runnin’ an analog signal path into a good tube amp, forget that digital junk and keep accumulating high end stomp boxes.

I have a 100 watt version of the same head, although my high gain channel has been modded to make it actually useable – GREAT two channel amp, now.

I was in the same dilemma, and what I wound up doing was picking up a slightly used Ampeg 4 / 12. I got it at a local Music-Go-Round, and it’s loaded with Celestions. I paid only $375, and I promptly whipped out my handy dandy screwdriver and removed the logo. Problem(s) solved, and it sounds really good. If you’re an annoying audiophile, this solution may not fit; but if you’re in a rock band and need a cab, it’ll work.

I believe it’s an 8 ohm cabinet, but there’s a three way switch on the back of your head to match things up if it’s not. Be sure to test the cabinet before you buy it – I’m not sure if you can tell the age of a functioning speaker based on sight and sound.
I found a neat little youtube video if anyones interested
“Landry Amps” is the worst band name ever AND I can get that same bland, dated, irrelevant Frampton tone from my tired, road whore Marshall. 😉

    Sorry……that video set me off…. 😳

I have a Fulltone Clyde. It’s true bypass and it sounds pretty good, I guess. I dunno; maybe I was expecting that it would totally blow me away, and it doesn’t. Don’t get me wrong, it sound infinitely better than a Dunlop or Morley. Also, I’m not sure if it’s my particular pedal or ALL of them, but there seems to be one spot in the pot where most of the “wha” happens without a whole lot of variation at the top or the bottom of the travel of the pedal. I’ve had some success adjusting the internal trim pot, but I’m still not “married” to it. It did survive a 3 foot drop onto a concrete floor, so that earned it high marks.

When I was shopping for a wah, I’d narrowed my choices down to the Fulltone and the Budda. I’m thinking I may like to try the Budda – just don’t tell my wife. 😉

I have an E.H. stereo memory man with Hazari pedal that’s supposedly made in N.Y.C. U.S.A. It works well enough, but I’m not sure where they import the “Hazari” from…Norway? 😉

And yes, those Dano pedals are better suited for pounding tent stakes or smashing crickets. 😆

I had an Arion SCH-1 Chorus that I was very fond of – ’til it malfunctioned. Many of the various new and vintage models of Boss Chorus pedals sound OK. I plan on getting a Dr. Scientist to replace my current piece of GARBAGE D.O.D. Ice Box – what a joke that thing is. Once every 3 or 4 shows, it’ll go BZZZZZZZZZZZSSSSHHTT!!!!!! in the middle of a song even if it’s not turned on – nice! 🙁 Did you know that ALL DOD / Digitech gear is total amateur hours rubbish? It’s true!

I currently have a Boss PH-2 Fazer that sounds really good 😯 , but it lacks the tap tempo feature of the PH-3 which – according to my ears – doesn’t sound nearly as lush.

I had an MXR for two days, hated it, and sent it back. Why that one dimensional would-be door stop is so popular I’ll never understand.

I’ve never used a Flinger and don’t really see the point. Isn’t there one on “Goodbye Girl?” That’s a great song.

Man, those are .08s – don’t they make your gui-tar sound wimpy and tinny? Don’t they break easily??

I recently encouraged our singer / rhythm player to switch from 9s to 11s on his Telecaster, and his sound improved greatly – much more full and musical. Just curious… 😉

All the gui-tars in my pile of stratocasters are all strung with Ernie Ball Regular Slinky .10’s. 😀

My picks are Dunlop Nylon Standards of 1mm in thickness. 😯

I use natural hemp guitar straps exclusively. 😯 😯

I also endorse Seymour Duncan Hotrail Pickups (8)), and the hole in the middle of my body likes to be filled with Mickey’s Malt Liquor. 😈

Hey 1Bass, thanks for the feedback. I’m not really sure what our style of music is. Our songwriter keeps coming up with these country-sounding tunes, and I suppose what you’re hearing is my feeble attempt at some Uncle Tupelo / Drive By Truckers / Jason and the Scorchers sort of country rock. Honestly, I consider myself a bit of a “hired hand,” and – though a fun band – it’s not totally my style of music either.

As far as our last recording session is concerned, we went in for more than 8 hours and recorded 12 tunes – all live, best of 3 or 4 takes. I think by the time we were working on track 5, I’d already threatened our drummer and told him if there was a lock on the door to the drum both, he’d better use it. I can’t explain the inconsistences…or can I? 😉

Wow – sorry to first post this message under the “Guitar” category. I didn’t know this basement room of the forum existed. Hello? Is there anybody out there?? 😉

As long as I’m here, you know how sometimes during rehearsal someone will start to play a riff or chord progression and everyone else will sort of half heartedly join in? Well, we turned one of those periods of cacophony into a song. If I heard another band play a three chord tune like this, I probably be tempted to hurl a beer bottle at the guitarist for serving up such rubbish; but since I’m the one doing it, it doesn’t seem so bad – it’s actually a fun song to play, and I’ll take my well-deserved bottle to the head with great humility:

    Four Horse Johnson – Honey

Standard disclaimers about my lackluster lead playing. Whatever!! 😆

At the risk of changing the subject / creating conflict / asking a stupid, rambling question; I saw a local band called The Tisdales on Saturday, and the rhythm guitarist was playing a Les Paul (loaded with so-called BurstBucker Pro pups) through a Maxon overdrive into an AC30 half stack. I was fairly excited for them to go on because I’d never heard that particular amp in person – few players in my neck of the woods gig with Vox amps.

Expecting to be engulfed by waves of warm tone, I instead was subjected to flat sonic mediocrity that could have been easily replicated by any solid state amp. Don’t get me wrong, they put on a GREAT show – the lead guitarist was playing a Bigsby-equipped Guild through a HotRod Deville that sounded amazing – but the Vox seriously failed to move me; and the guy went through a couple different settings all at high volume. Any thoughts on what the problem, if any, may have been?

If you’re not a self-important, washed-up metal has been (like Jeff Watson of Night Ranger), stick to the pen. And don’t get any ideas – his “8 finger technique” is patented!

Hmmmm – is that a Les Paul in his hands? Go figure! 😉

Although not strictly instrumental – it does contain some yodeling, vocalized gibberish, and……whistling – Hocus Pocus by Focus is a really weird mostly instrumental song:

Warning: this video my cause seizures!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpV5InLw52U

My college-days band did an extended version of this tune; and I fondly remember playing long, angry solos in the Phrygian mode. Actually, the main chord progression is the Phryian mode.

My same university-town band also did a 10 minute version of Pink Floyd’s Interstellar Overdrive, but I’m not sure if that song is really weird or not. Our interpretation probably came across as being fairly strange.

How ‘bout a photo of my amp AND me? A couple weeks ago we played an outdoor show to what eventually turned out to be over 1000 people – after the rain stopped, that is. It was a good gig. For some reason my amp always sounds a little funny outdoors; and I’m not sure if it’s because of the qualities an acoustic environment to which I’m unaccustomed, or if it’s because the breeze keeps my tubes from warming up properly.

This photo was sent to Marshall and appears on their mySpace page, but an endorsement deal has yet to come my way. 😉

Additionally, my JCM900 is currently in the care of the crazed amp experts at Savage Audio for new tubes, a modification to the high-gain channel, and some other minor repairs. We Minnesotans are fortunate to have a qualified luthier around every corner and a good number of skilled amp technicians within easy driving distance.
