I’ve been reunited with a DY-48 I purchased years ago (long story) and am just starting to play again. It was made in 1984 serial #54471. I like it very much and would like to know:
What model and series (Traditional??)would it correspond to now? I have not seen another listed on the Yaira website or sales websites. What woods are used? Any info. will be appreciated.

Hello, I have this Guitar, you will buy it?
Commenting on the 2555. I have had 3 of these and they usually go for 200-300 dollars depending on condition and desirability at the time, of course. Do you have one for sale? Thanks in advance for responding.

Did you ever sale this guitar?
I have an 82 DY53, and I’ve seen them go on eBay for about $400 in good condition. I bought mine new in ’82 and I think I paid around $700.
If it is the same as mine it has a unique woodgrain pattern on the back and sides of the guitar, and some nice mother of pearl inlays. I’m not sure how different it would be, but I wouldn’t part with mine for less than $500.
I have an Alvarez-Yairi DY53, made in 1981, with a satin finish, not high-gloss. It’s in MINT condition, hardly played. It’s really too large for me, and it’s finally time to let it go. Any comments on its possible value would be greatly appreciated. It comes with a really heavy-duty hardshell case. thanks
Hi! My DY-47 sounds great (with bone nut & saddle) – but, sadly is very, very, worn. I need a new guitar – on a budget. What new acoustic might sound like this old gem? I was thinking a JUMBO guitar? EJ-200 or the Yamaha jumbo? Any comments?
Yes, anything made by Taylor………

Hi,
Would appreciate any info on this particular model.
Thanks.
I haven’t play mine in a long time. It is a Yairi and inside it states "Sada Serial 36 Model 750 1970" There is also a stamp that I can’t quite make out.
I’d appreciate any info and I was considering letting my daughter take it as a loaner.

This popular thread has been given its own page : Re: Yairi Model 750
This is a nicer guitar than you might think, I know because I have the same model I bought off of ebay. Sada Yairi is the father of Kazuo Yairi, he was originally a violin maker. Not to be confused with the Sadao Yairi of the S. Yairi brand. There are a lot less Sada Yairi guitars floating around than Alvarez Yairi’s or S. Yairis. I have only seen two on ebay and I bought the 2nd one. The stamp inside says "Sada Yairi Luthier, supervised by ARAI". I think ARAI is the same as ARIA, but I might be mistaken. A dreadnought rosewood Sada Yairi model 740 sold for a little over $1,000 on ebay in 11/2003. The 750 is a folk guitar, solid spruce top, mahogany back and sides with excellent tone and volume – loulder than many dreadnoughts. You’re daughter should be glad to get it if you don’t change your mind.

I have a S. Yairi Model 9108 AD___ and have the same question. Also, any recommendations for fixing the fret that’s too high for the high-E string where the neck meets the body?
A family member gave me this guitar a DY71.I was wondering how much is it worth ? and a little bit about it ? its in new condition It is nt for sale. Thanks
Hello,
Alvarez-Yairi guitar DY71 is a very nice, yet mid priced guitar. It was hand made by craftsman Kazuo Yairi. This is a six string acoustic dreadnought with a solid spruce top rare Koa back and sides. Excellent sound and playability. I Purchaased a used 1995 model recently for $875.

PS Just to clarify, this guitar is the highest of qualities and is every bit the quality of the high end guitars made in the USA. I have both. The automatic predisposition against guitars made overseas is unfortunate, and in this case, is unconscionable.
The original price was 1150.00. The award-winning electronics (sys500) were 300.00, if they were included. Did not usually come with a case. They have high grade Koa back and sides (Hawaii) and usually Spruce or occasionally Cedar sounding boards. Upgrades on mine are ebony fretboard and gold hardware. They are excellent guitars. If you ever want to sell it let me know. Even though they are made by a very special luthier or his apprentices, Kazuo Yairi, they don’t hold their value well because they are made in Japan rather than the US. They make entry to the US through St. Louis Music. Later, SJ [email protected]

I bought an Alveraz Yari in 1995. It is a black acoustal electric. It has gold tuning knobs and pearl inlets. I bought it for around $1,100 in 95. Did I get taken or is it really worth that much. It has a certification from Kazuo yairi that it was hand made.
J.C.
at $1100, you didn’t get taken. I’m not as familiar with your model, but Yairis generally go for $1200 and up retail. I’ve admired these guitars for some time now and will soon be bringing home a ’91 DY 50.

: I have an Alvarez DY50 50th aniversary guitar. Hand signed and such. My father purchased this guitar in 1979 and its one of the nicest guitars ive played. It plays much nicer than a lot of thousand plus dollar guitars ive picked up. Can anyone give me an estimate to how much this guitar is worth. Say if i wanted to get it insured how much would i insure it for…becuase if i have anything to do with it, this guitar will never leave my family. thank you for you help
i have #182/900. my dad also bought it in 79, but never learned how to play. he gave it to me about 5 years ago, and I’ve played it everyday since. It wasnt until recently that i realized just how great a sound this guitar had. I was so used to it that i honestly didnt know what a bad sound was. When i went to McCabes in LA near where my aunt lives, i was surprised that the only guitars that could match up to the tone of my own were like 5k Guilds, and even those weren’t any better than my DY50. It pains me to see people finding them at pawnshops and selling them for $600 at most. I love this guitar with all my heart. I learned how to play on it, i learned how to sing using this guitar, and i wouldn’t give it up for anything. It helps define me as a musician
i have a yari Alvarez WY-1K excellent condition.
i am considering selling or trading this guitar can u tell me what it may be worth or how to find its value?

I have two of these. I had to send them back to Saint Louis Music company for some "life time warranty" work done. The pick guards were peeling up around the edges. I asked them what they were worth so I could insure them when shipping. The guy told me if they were his he would insure them for $2000.00 each.
Hang on to it.. I love mine, sweetest sound I’ve ever heard and plays like glass. By the way it was about 5 years ago when i sent them in.

I also have a Hand Signed Limited Edition DY50. I am confused, my guitar was built August of 1879 and the Limited Edition plaque reads 923/900. The 923 looks as if it was hand stamped. Does anyone know the back ground on why this might have occured? It seems odd that anyone would set an overall of instrument count and then purposely exceed the maximum instruments in the edition. What would be the purpose of buying a limited edition that is not limited? Any info that would provide clarification would be appreciated.

I don’t know why your issue number would be higher than the limit, but as to value, I saw #328 of 900 up for auction on Ebay a few weeks ago for $4,500. I have #006: Plays great, sounds sweet and has the looks to die for.

I have had it all over the world from texas to spain to turkey to japan.
Mr. Yari built a fine durable instrument. i purchased it after working the whole summer in humble tx. ast a local instrument music shop. Enjoy the yari while you can…
I have an Alvarez DY50 50th aniversary guitar hand signed #293 0f 900 amazing guitar….
I’d be grateful if anyone can tell me how my guitar fits into the Yairi range, indeed if it’s genuine or not. The label inside says Kiari Guitars by K.Yairi, Japan, model number is fuzzy but appears to be CY 640, serial number is 5 1157. I bought it new from a UK dealer in 1974/5 not knowing much about guitars at the time and use it to play folk/acoustic accompaniment. It looks identical to photos of the current CY140 classical, sounds superb and wows people who here it for the first time.

Response from Neveille Tokin, Northwich, Cheshire,UK.
I was interested to hear about the KIARI. I’ve just bought one on e-bay . Its a classical and the model number is GY85. I paid £178 plus deliver. I don’t know whether I paid too much or got a bargain but I am pleased with it. It really plays well and has a good tone. The seller reckoned it was a 1968 model. For its age it is in very good shape.
best wishes

Hi
Just trying to find out about a recent acquisition : Kiari GY85. It’s a really nice guitar, great sound but slightly high action.
It’s in really nice condition( owned by a nun so it probably knows Go Tell It On The Mountain off by heart).
Don’t know if this discussion is still active but I’d love to find out any information I can, not too easy on this model.
Thanks in advance
Craig
Had my Yari Alvarez DY 57 for 25 years, plays great! the pick guard curled up and I now have some pick guard glue on the spruce top. How do I get this off and what is the BEST pick guard replacement?
Also, what are the best strings for this guitar.
I’m just considering buying a Yairi G-1f second hand giutar in mint condition what would be a reasonable asking price
regards
mick smith (UK)
Greetings from Warner OK.
I have an Alvarez Yairi guitar that has been played with the pick very low on the strings. There is worn finish and some wood abraded away just below the pickguard. there are lots of scratches and abrasions on the finish. Would it devalue the guitar to attempt any type of repair/replacement of the pickguard?
The finish could be polished down and then a fresh coat of finish put back over it to smooth out the various scratches. Would this devalue the guitar??
The guitar is in excellent playing condition.
Thanks!
Ray
Ray,
I bought a DY 78 in a pawn shop recently. The previous owner flat picked it and the burl pick guard was ruined. I got some pick guard material from Stewart-MacDonald and replaced the pick guard and head stock veneer. Looks good. Don’t know if/how it will affect its value, but I like it.

Does anybody know what this is worth. It has been played very little, like knew?
I don’t even know if this site is still active. I have one of these, which I imported from a seller in Japan in 2010. It is an amazing guitar to play and the sound is as good as anything I have ever heard. I have a collection of 20 to 30 guitars and this is one of the better instruments on the walls. I aid a total of $875 and think it is worth considerably more today. I have only heard of three others in the States.
I have owned this guitar since the late 1980’s. Any idea what its worth? (good condition) Serial # 57660. Inside label bears Kazoo Yari’s signature.
Can anyone point me to some info on the cy-1. A local store has one for sale, but can’t even find it in a catalog. It is a sloped cutaway nylon string model with turquoise rosette and turquoise fingerboard markers.
Thx much,
Al

I’m going to correct my email I just sent. Looks like the heel block number of my model 5067 is is 4703, if I’m reading it right, and that breaks out to March 1972, according to the Web site at Alvarez Yairi.

Well, folks, I’m in the same boat. Just punched in my model number, a 5067, serial number 1135, and that brought me to this Web site. But I just read something on the Yairi (Alvarez) home site that made me think the model number can show the date of manufacturer, with the 50 in the 5067 breaking out to 1975. And that’s when I think I was given me, for sure.
…it’s well taken care of and I think my ex bought it for me in about 1975 for maybe $200, maybe on sale even at that price, plus another maybe $80 for a custom made case. It is in perfect shape, not sure I’d sell it but sure would like to know the value. It still plays as sweet as Day One, if not sweeter. Just finished polishing it after a little playing.
: : : Can anyone tell me the value of my guitar. It was made in April 1972 and Model # is 5067.
: : I have a model close to that I think may be worth 2,000 +. Check on ebay and the Yairi group on Yahoo.com for more info.

I’ve got serial number 0757. I saved my nickels and bought it when I was in the 6th grade in 1972 for $291.50. What’s it worth now?

My husband has a K Yari DY-78 and we were trying to find our the value on it. It has a 3-piece back and Herringbone design. Very glossy finish and very well kept. If you can help us out, we would appreciate it. Thanks
Also, Alvarez 1990, Satin Finish. With pearl inlay around the sound hole and an inlay of a rose on one of the frets. Head stock has the Alvarez insignia inlay on it. Don’t know the numbers on this one. If you could help on this one too, Thanks
For those who love a challenge, I’m trying to see if this guitar is a legitimate "vintage" Yairi Masterworks classical or something else. All I know is the following:
The label says it’s made for "CBS Masterworks by Kazuo Yairi"
has "MW" burned into back support, vertical arrangement of letters;
has "MWG-Y1010" as model number on label;
has serial number 14611, supposedly
All of this affirmed by seller. I’ve not seen the guitar in person.
My concern: I thought serial nos. started with dynastic year, then month, so 4611– would be better. Also, can’t fine model number–nobody’s heard of it. And, finally, what is "CBS"??
Any help greatly appreciated, please email me.

I don’t know if you are still looking at this but I hav a CBS Masterworks I picked up in ’71. The model is MWG560. It was made in Japan. Says nothing about Yairi. I know that Fender sold out to CBS back in ’65 and CBS produced guitars until Fender bought it back in ’85. I do not know anything else about this guitar but would like to know more.

Hi All,
I recently lost a K. Yairi/CBS Masterworks guitar, circa ’70, when my house was broken in to. For insurance purposes, I need to know the current value of such a guitar – anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

I’m also looking for information on my Yairi. It’s hand made exclusively for CBS Masterworks. The model number MWG- Y 1025. The heel number is 11467. I bought it in 1974 for $50 from one of my brother’s friends who was desparate for money. I don’t remember how much he paid for it, but is was significantly more than what I paid. It was in perfect condition when I bought it, but it now has some nicks and scratches. Still sounds great.

This popular thread has been given its own page : Sada Yairi vs. Kazuo Yairi
: Some of the older Yairi’s have Sada Yairi on them. Can anyone give me some info on the difference between Sada Yairi and Kazuo Yairi?
Know these are old posts, but figure someone else will eventually search for same info.
Sadao (SADA) Yairi and Kazuo Yairi were cousins (Sadao is now deceased)~ they both made guitars, and at the beginning (early 60’s from what I’ve been able to find) both made guitars for Alvarez. After a few years, Kazuo continued, but Sada went on his own..so you will find many brands that were made by him, or his son Hiroshi~ Yairi Gakki, Yairi Guitars, Made by Yairi, SADA, Yairi and Son, etc, etc,.
In the mid 70’s, Sadao lost his business in Japan, and left Japan to work in collaboration with other Luthiers, and companies. including Lowden and Samick.
Sada or S. Yairi guitars are still made today, under the supervision of his son Hiroshi, in Japan.
Kazuo Yairi, continues to create his own masterpieces sold under K. Yairi label, and his Alvarez Yairi models, sold in the U.S.
Hope this helps~someone!

Thanks much – just doing research on my 1976 Sada Yairi Nagoya PH 6034, No. 650. Any clues out there?

I have two highly prized Sada Yairi steel string guitars. A 1973 Model 9100 which looks very much like a Martin New Yorker and a 1976 Model 730 which is a classic Dreadnought.
Both guitars are amongst the best I have ever owned or played over 30 years as a professional musician. I bought the 9100 new at the age of 16 (a lucky chance)and the 730 2nd hand some years later while playing in Australia. If you ever see one of these guitars buy it, they have a loud full sound with crystal clear tops and a warm full Bass. The man who made them could obviously play well himself, you can just feel it in the shape of the neck and the ballance when playing. As with all quality guitars the older they get the better they sound and play. These babys Rock! Cheers, Simon B.

I had the same question and found that Sada was either the Brother or Cousin of Kazuo who worked in the family trade for a time. I read that it was Sada who brought fame to the Yairi name.
I can start by telling that Sadao Yairi was Kazuo Yairi’s Uncle. The brother to Giichi Yairi (Kazuo’s Father)…more info and comments can be found on one of my sites:

I have a Sada Yairi dreadnought guitar, I believe the model is a DW0025? (not sure of the model, the stamp is difficult to read). It is similar to a Martin D-35, it has a brazilian rosewood body with a 3-piece back. It is an exceptional guitar of very high quality.
Sada Yairi was a Japanese master luthier and all of his guitars were handmade, he made guitars fom ca. 1965-1980s. They were imported to the USA by The Philadelphia Music Company of Limerick, Pennsylvania. He made both classical nylon string guitars and steel string folk guitars. Steel string jumbos and dreadnoughts have the S Yairi logo on the headstock, and the nylon classical models have no logo. I got to this site while pining away for the Sada Yari that I sold 35 years ago. I was explaining to a Luthier who is going to build me a new one and he asked me. "You have had over 40 acoustics in your time which was the best?" After thinking about it for a couple of days I remembered the Yari and it was like the girlfriend from the past. You don’t realize you love her until she gone. I had top dollar guitars but that Sada Yari was the best I have ever owned.

The man who made them could obviously play well himself, you can just feel it in the shape of the neck and the ballance when playing. As with all quality guitars the older they get the better they sound and play. These babys Rock! Cheers, Simon B.

: : : I had the same question and found that Sada was either the Brother or Cousin of Kazuo who worked in the family trade for a time. I read that it was Sada who brought fame to the Yairi name.
: : I have a Sada Yairi dreadnought guitar, I believe the model is a DW0025? (not sure of the model, the stamp is difficult to read). It is similar to a Martin D-35, it has a brazilian rosewood body with a 3-piece back. It is an exceptional guitar of very high quality.
: : Sada Yairi was a Japanese master luthier and all of his guitars were handmade, he made guitars fom ca. Ian,
drop me a line at [email protected] and we’ll touch bases.
: Some of the older Yairi’s have Sada Yairi on them. Can anyone give me some info on the difference between Sada Yairi and Kazuo Yairi?
Sadao Yairi was a cousin of Kazuo but they did not work in the same shop. Sadao’s shop whent out of business in the 70-80s I think. I have heard a S. Yairi to me it sounded sweet but it could have used more volume, Higher tensions strings may be what it needed. His shop catered to the student market.
I own a Sada Yari and at the time I bought it brand new (early 70’s)I was told it was like a second line to K Yari. My question is, I wish to sell my instrument. It’s in good condition escept for a large crack in the front plate. How much is it worth to sell to a guitar store for refurbishing and resale by them?

Does anyone know about a s yairi yd308 ? Have not been able to find Eve a picture of them , someone said it’s close sound to a Martin D45 ? Find that hard to believe but I own only yairi guitars I’m going to buy one an wanted feed back if anyone knows !! Thanks in advance
Hello, am seeking some help. I recently acquired a Acoustic S. Yairi Guitar. Logo on headstock shows name with S script letter and then Yairi. As shown and also stamped on truss rod tortoise or faux tortoise cover. Similar soundhole label as noted. Label says Nagoya Japan. I have no idea the model number noted and cannot find information. But it is stamped Y 1 – 1, seems like a strange model # to me.
Would anyone have any idea as to its vintage, value, etc? Any info is appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

I would like to find one but don’t know the difference between the two models. Any information would be welcome.
I own, since 1975, a superb dreadnought (Simili Martin D.35), by Sadao Yaïri / Nagoya, JAPAN, (solid spruce top, rio rosewood back and rims, 3 parts back (rio/curlymaple/rio, head with white binding, soft V mahogany neck, 6 Schaller m. head), this model reference is YW 80. What are its years of made, please ? I guess 1970-1974 ? What is its sell value actually (in good conditions) ? Thank you all ! / LYON – FRANCE / 9-28 of 2016
my s yairi has a PH just before the model or serial number. any idea what that means?
Hello,
Saw your comment. My new (to me) S Yairi also just has a PH and a number.
Any luck finding out what that means?
Thanks in advance

I have a Sada Yari model 9100 #218 manufactured in 1973. It’s in excellent condition and I was curious about it’s value.
Thank you.
Simon mentioned that the Yairi 9100 resembled the Martin New Yorker. I had a Martin New Yorker that I bought in the late 1960’s. Several years later, I set in on top of my car while packing some other items and forgot it was there. I drove away, the guitar slid off and the body was crushed against the pavement. (Dumb kid) While looking into having it repaired (which I was told would be very expensive if not impossible) a dealer showed me a 1973 Sada Yairi 9100. It was much cheaper than replacing the Martin with a new one, and to be honest, I couldn’t tell the difference.
I’ve always felt that I had to settle for a no-name knock off, but after reading Simon’s and a few other reviews, I’ve come be very proud of it.
I recently joined a band where I will need an amplified acoustic guitar. I went out looking for one and played dozens. Not one came close to the playability or sound quality of my Yairi. So I have decided to have a pick-up and a strap pin installed and enjoy what I have.
Tom, I must correct you. This is NOT a classical guitar that someone modified. The 9100 and the Martin New Yorker were marketed as being “convertible” between acoustic and classical. Contrary to the original post, I have played it with classical (nylon) strings and it sounded great. But long ago, I bought a Hernandez classical and have kept silk & steel strings on the Yairi.
Bottom line, I already have my hands on one and I’m NOT letting go.
Still, I’d be interested to know approximately what it’s worth these days.

I have been looking at buying one of these two acoustics and was wonderingif anyone knew if either were made with Mahogany or Rosewood back/sides? I Like the 71, but it seems to be most commonly found in Koa. Any thoughts appreciated.
take away from it at all?
Hi, Jim. This past Saturday, I bought a new DY71 that was manufactured in ’95. From what I’ve been told, it has a solid Spruce top, laminated Koa back & sides, ebony fingerboard, and a graphite bridge. I put a set of Elixir lights on it, and it sounds as sweet as, if not sweeter than anything I’ve ever heard. Deep (but not boomy) lows and crisp (but not tinny) highs. It’s incredible how much sound comes out of it. And, she’s surprisingly lightweight, too. Is there something about Koa that you don’t like? Here are a couple of links pertaining to the 71 that you might find helpful. I wish you the best.

This popular thread has been given its own page : Yairi DY-60 Aniversary
I have one that I purchased in 1981, it has the anniversary plate on the back of the headstock regarding the st louis music company anniversary.
When I emailed them about the guitar I got the following response.
A 1982 DY60 has a solid Spruce top with laminate Ash back & sides. The binding is Maple, the neck Mahogany. I show a list price of $575 in the 1982 price list. We do not have production totals for this, though I am sure it was a small figure, maybe 120 or so.

I have one of these guitars and am having the same problem finding information on its value. It has a great sound, does any one know of a way to find out toatla production of this model?
I purchased this guitar new in the mid 1990s. I haven’t been able to locate any information on it. Is it rare? I recently have the need to sell any suggestions for price or forum to advertise.
: Thanks
: :I also have an early 1990s DY 60 anniversary limited – about 800 of these maple, napa, tobacco sunburst guitars with gold hardware were made. So it is relatively rare. I would try to sell it through collectors sites and vintage sites. If the instrument is ib good to excellent shape you might get $1500 or so.

ebay, no less than $500. I called Alvarez and found very few were made and the original price in 1982 was $400. They have went on ebay for over a grand. Cannot be found in blue books, very rare.

I have a DY60 from 1996. Good guitar – Neck has been very stable with good action. installed Fishman pickup years ago.
all around good guitar with low wear in great condition. Would consider selling for the right price. Willing to discuss if seriously interested.
i also have a dy 60 and i believe it is one of the 80s models but someone has taken the brass plate off on the back of the head stock.. is there any way to tell by the sticker in the sound hole what year it is , and so where are we with numbers ? ?. are we in the 800s the 280s or 120s and how much are they new 400? or 500? and are the 90s maple one different in price and number … kinda confused with the two models i guess….kinda came in late sorry .. oh and and did the value change since Mr. Yairi passed on ??
The highest tag stock number I’ve seen on the 1982 DY-60 is 307 so at least that many were made. Alvarez says they don’t have production totals from that era. But someone from the Alvarez Facebook page said they got a Yairi factory rep to confirm 320. who knows?
I bought a Yairi DY60 Anniversary Maple new in 1996. It has solid Sitka spruce top and quilted maple sides and back. I was told by the store where I bought it that they only made 280 of these in production. This is not to be confused with the earlier model anniversary model. Different guitar altogether.
Although I thought I bought it in ‘93 or ‘94. Mine also has a red X on the label, supposedly meaning it’s a second, but the shop owner said he couldn’t find the blemish. I can’t either.
When I bought mine I also received a numbered certificate and a brass logo belt buckle. Also have never found it in Blue Book or any other collectors books. But, then again I’ve had it for 35 years and wouldn’t sell it for anything. Action and sound just as good as any Martin I’ve ever seen. JMO. Skip
I came across thins old guitar recently, its a Yairi number 78 from 1966. Its my only guitar and I plan to have it awhile, but I’m just curious as to the value. If anyone finds out please e-mail me
Thanks
OH MY GOD i have number 77 from 1968. have you found out anything more about them because i cant find information anywhere.
