  3. Ibanez Guitar!
    Steve Hagadorn

I have an Ibanez guitar that my Dad got in the late 70’s, maybe early 80’s. He passed in 1998, and the guitar was given to me. He said long ago it was worth alot! What that means, I have no idea! I recently took it to a shop here in Nampa, ID. He found some info, but not much! He said it is an SG Japenese made, made in August 1977. I’m trying to find out from anyone at all what the value is on this sweet guitar! If anyone knows please contact me! Thanks, Steve H.

I bought one of these new in Park Forest IL somewhere between 1970-1972 and lost interest in it about a year later with college and work. I is in a case upstairs and still looks showroom new. I paid about $350 for it at the time, don’t know much else. Did you find out anything else about them?

        Thanks

Hi, I just ran across out old conversation about the Ibanez 698 MD. What would you think about selling yours? My son is 23 now and has become a great player…. He loves my Ibanez. Thought about buying yours and giving him mine. That way, I’d have one with the pick guard still on it. I stupidly removed mine. Well, thanks!

I did get a response from one lady that had the identical guitar. She was very nice to send me photos so that I could see (and remember) the beautiful pick-guard that I stupidly removed.

Does yours have the black pick-guard with what look to me like mother of pearl dandelion flowers (when they turn fuzzy)? It is a strange guitar, sounds really very nice but no-one has any info on them….. its like they dont exist! But, now I know there are 3 of them. lol

I am in Michigan. I wonder where all the others are.

I picked one up recently in Van Nuys. Maple neck, back and sides. Spruce top. Funny little pickguard like you describe. Gorgeous guitar, early 70s as you said. They don’t make em like this anymore!

  5. 2399DX Lawsuit model 1973 - pickups and casing
    Pat

Hi, my 2399DX plays well and looks great but at some point in its life the pick ups have been changed. I think it would have had Super 70s in it originally, but when they were changed the pickup casing was chiseled out a bit to make the new ones fit. It looks shoddy and I want to try and get new casings and pickups fitted to get it back to as an original state as possible.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

    Thanks, Pat

    1. Re: 2399DX Lawsuit model 1973 - pickups and casing
      Eric

      Hi Pat,
I am in the same predicament. The 2399DX originally had the gold oval-shaped "clear sound" single coil pickups. I bought my ’73 DX back in ’78 and it was in original mint condition. As a stupid 19 year old a couple of years later, I fitted a pair of the best (at the time) Seymour Duncan Humbuckers (single-wire on the neck and double-wire on the bridge). This gives an excellent sound and heaps of options with phase reversal and coil-tap switching – better than most others I’ve heard even today. The trouble is, now the DX is not standard and I can’t find the old pickups anywhere – I must have ditched them. We should both keep hunting and keep in touch!

Cheers for now and good luck,

      Eric

: custom agent no numbers purchased new in ireland any info welcome

Hi here, well all i can say is lucky you! I also have this model exept that the logo on the headstock is Antoria & not Ibanez. No matter the logo, all these guitars were made by the same people in the same factory in Japan. If yours has no serial number then it is pre 1975. It is worth about 1,000 euros, depending on condition!
Look for the book by Micheal Wright "Guitar Stories Volume One" which contains photos and the story of your guitar!
I would insure the guitar as they are rare.

Hey, I agree with everything said about the RB800. However, it’s time to get rid of my trusted 800. It is hiddeously colored with a rare factory color- turquoise blue/green. Oh, yeah, it is in mint condition. And yes, it plays like nothing else I have ever set hands on. But, alas, it is time to say good bye. Email me at [email protected] in Omaha,NE.

  7. musician rd custom 77
    cate

i bought a musician guitar about 10 years ago,
i found out it was a musician later,
but the year and the name doesnt match with the musician history,
according to the serial number it’s a december 1977, and ibanez released the musician in 78,
also all the pictures i saw of the different models have minor differences with mine (switch, volume knobs…)
i also found that, with gibson guitars,rd means -research department-
i was wondering if mine would be a prototype

  8. Re: Ibanez roadster bass (RB800)
    Chuck Conboy

: I bought my 1981 Japanese Ibanez Roadstar RB800 4-string Bass brand new in NYC in 1981! It was a truly horrific Fire Engine Red with tiny metallic flakey sparkles when i got it. 26 years later, and its dulled down to a pretty cool looking deeper red. She’s got "Ibanez RB800. The Ultimate Expression Of Craftsmanship" along the body, just above the neck. (Bolt-On Neck, Arrow shaped Headstock) She also has the Fender type PUps and all-active system. The neck is really skinny for a bass, even narrower than my Fender Jazz Bass. I LOVE this bass. I’ve used her constantly for almost 26 years now!
: In session it’s sound just outclasses Fenders, Ricky’s and even a couple of Alembic’s I’ve used. I’ve had clients request a "Grunting Precision Bass sound…" in a session, and after about 3 mins on an Ashdown 4×10 tube combo, and 5 mins on my Ibanez, I had the producer saying "Thats the fattest grunt i’ve ever heard…" (He’s obviously never met my mum!) I went through the entire 80’s with her doing "Slap Bass" sessions, Jazz sessions, Rock, Blues etc etc. BUT… My Ibanez RB800 truly excells in the "Funk Bass" dept. The action on her 2 octave superscale neck is **** ing amazing.
: It’s never fretted out or choked. The Frets did actually turn green though!!! Against the dark Rosewood board and the deep red neck, it looked sort of cool, but even on a new set of strings she was starting to sound a bit tired. I got her refretted in Boston (94) and the guy who did the job said that she had the wildest feel he’s ever played. With a set of Med long scale strings, the action at the 12th fret is just slightly higher than my 75 Gibson LP Standard! In 26 years, she’s been pro setup only TWICE and refretted ONCE! She’s so well setup, that if i want to, i can actually play just a little more behind the frets, and give her a Ricky or PBass "Grunt" or do lead lines on her.
: After 26 years, my only gripes about her is 1: THAT colour!
: 2: When the 9volt battery runs out, things get ugly. All of a sudden it’s fizz, fizz, fart……nothing! So i always keep a spare few 9volt batts in the original Ibanez RB800 Case (built like a tank!)
: Not too bad a list of gripes really i think. I cant say enough about my RB800. It can also do Dub Reggae effortlessly too… I’m going into the studio today, where i’m producing and playing guitar/bass on a truly amazing Singer/Songwriters debut album. I’ll take her out of her case, look at her and go "Uuuuugh what the **** was i thinking about with this colour!" plug her in and put down 10 hours worth of excellent sounding bass tracks.
: Cant say anymore about her.
: I would never think of selling her, but am looking for another one (NOT RED!) I’d love to know what the wood is under the paint. If i do ever see another one for sale, i’d buy it, and get my Red RB800 stripped and Nitro’d natural.

I have one of these RB800’s in factory Seafoam Green. You think RED is wild. I love this bass, but I think I would trade it for a pearl white one or a black one. People have always commented on the awesome sound and wild color. Everything you say about this fine machine is true. But because of the color, I would probably trade it.

  9. Old SG Bolt on!
    Justin B

I have an old SG copy, mahogany body, maple neck 21 frets, made in Japan neck plate, and bigsby style tremelo! There is nothing written on the headstock, but I was told it was an off-shoot of the Hoshino company, can you tell me any more? Thanks for your time

I have this bass too. When I bought it, it was the black pearl color they had…stripped the body down (left the neck cause I didn’t want to mess with it), and stained it a nice walnut color, actually kinda opened the sound up somewhat a little doing this. I didn’t put a laquer over it just left it the natural wood and rub it with beeswax every now and then to keep it nice.

I also have this Bass. I’ve been playing for the past 30 years and picked it up in 82 new. I have since bought and played a multitude of basses, but nothing compares the way the slim neck of the RB800 first in my hand. I have since sold all my other bass guitars and bought and additional two RB800 just in case one gets broke as nothing I’ve played can compare to the neck on this guitar. I’ve played everything from the local dairy quieen to 25000 seat concert halls over the years and wouldn’t dream of playing anything else.

These guitars are honeys! I just spent the afternoon playing Gibsons in the price range of $2,000 to $10,000 and the cream-colored 1977 Ibanez Les Paul copy I played sounded better and played better than most of them. I think they’re wonderful guitars! Too bad Gibson can’t make them as good!

Hi, can anyone give me an idea on the valuation of my black ibanez les paul custom, with case. 1977 with the gold plated hardwear. this guitar plays like a dream but i have to sell it, had it for 30 years. great condition, it was made in August 1977. and 1489 were made. it has p90 pick ups on. i havent seen one like this anywhere on the net.

    1. Re: banjos
      Scott Hickerty

: Can anyone tell me where I can get information on all banjo’s built by Ibanez

I would like to find out more information as well. I have a banjo I purchased new in 1974, by Mansfield. They are linked to Ibanez in the following way with this vintage of guitar (and, I am guessing, the banjo as well):

Mansfield was a Canadian musical instrument distributor (you will note that most Mansfield owners are in Canada). Mansfield guitars are OEM made from different musical instrument manufacturers. Recently purchased Mansfield guitars have no special interest, but in the 1970’s , the Mansfield guitars were built by Hoshino Gakki (Japan), the Ibanez makers.

If you have a 1970’s Mansfield, chances are that it’s an Ibanez with a Mansfield name on it. The Ibanez vintage guitars are highly wanted. You can search Ibanez vintage collector websites for more information about the Ibanez story and some information about Mansfield. There is no doubt that those guitars are meant to become collector’s items because they are apparently the same guitars as the Ibanez vintage 1970s, except for the brand.

If you have any comments or information let me know…

      Scott

I would like to know the model (type) of this Ibanez Prestige that I am looking at purchasing? The headstock simply reads: Ibanez Prestige and nothing more. I have been able to figure out the serial number from your website. Japanese made in 2001. Serial # is F0110656, meaning made at the Fugi plant in 2001. Nothing else indicates a specific model other than the (prestige). Is that it? Can you tell me what the suggested retail was at the time? The only other letters I can see are on the back of the headstock just before the serial #. It reads "CE"

      Corey Masters

I was given an Ibanez guitar from my grandpa. He said he has had it since the 1970’s, the only thing on it is inside the sound hole with a label that says. There is no serial number at all all it says on the label inside is:
      "
      The worlds Supreme Quality
      Established 1908
      Model no 70
      Made in Japan"

At the top of the neck it has a sticker that says steel reinforced neck. It is a six string classical style guitar, with no cut in the body. It has 18 playable frets. The neck is pretty thick, the body is realitvly small, but has alot of sound. It is an easy guitar to play. I was just curious how much it would be worth, or if you had an idea of some place i could talk to that could give me an estimate.

I have a 1980 Ibanez Roadster-Japanese, bought new at Steves Music in Toronto. It is active, and has twin pickups, although not Fender copies as your’s was-these are large, identical square bridge and neck. Just curious, what makes this bass sound so good? I’ve used it through Ampegs, and now my Traynor Mono block II and a JBL 15′. I agree, sweet sound-good luck finding one man. But I wonder if Steve’s Music in Toronto or Montreal could help you? They have a full line of great basses-ESP, etc, but also are Ibanez believers. Good luck from a fellow player in Canada! Denny

Denny: I have a 1980 Ibanez Roadster with a cherry-like finish that I bought in the UK back in the early 1980’s when I was gigging regularly. I recently bought it out of retirement for recording purposes and it still sounds great. It has a single active pickup; maple neck; heart shaped tuning heads. Weighs a ton! It also had a pickguard at some point before I acquired it (the screws are still there, no pickguard), although I can’t find out if this would have been original equipment as I can’t find any photos of this model with a pickguard. I’m thinking of adding one. Did yours have one? Happy to provide a photo…..Ian.

In session it’s sound just outclasses Fenders, Ricky’s and even a couple of Alembic’s I’ve used.
It’s never fretted out or choked.
After 26 years, my only gripes about her is 1: THAT colour!
2: When the 9volt battery runs out, things get ugly. All of a sudden it’s fizz, fizz, fart……nothing! So i always keep a spare few 9volt batts in the original Ibanez RB800 Case (built like a tank!)
Not too bad a list of gripes really i think.
            Cant say anymore about her.
I would never think of selling her, but am looking for another one (NOT RED!) I’d love to know what the wood is under the paint. If i do ever see another one for sale, i’d buy it, and get my Red RB800 stripped and Nitro’d natural.

I’ll try and help you as much as I can, I have a few of the ‘lawsuit’ type basses from the 70’s. What model is it? I presume it is either a Jazz or a Precision clone, there should be a serial number on the neck plate, what colour is it? is it all original? what condition is it in?

  23. Ibanez Artwood Series
    Noud Koevoets

    Hello People,

I recently purchased an older Ibanez Artwood Series twelve string Acoustic guitar. The type mentioned on the label is: AW 95 Apparently the soundboard is made of spruce and back and sides are made of solid rosewood. The fingerboard appears to be ebony. Position markers are abalone and on the head the brandname Ibanez is inlay work. The tuners are chrome plated and the bindings as well as the rosette work is wood inlay work.

Maybe someone can tell me the age of this guitar and what was the list price at that time. The serial number is: 0103264 The label is signed and is mentioning: made in Japan.

I hope you can tell me a bit more as I can’t find any information about this type in the Artwood series.
If you are interested I have some valuable information about Ibanez regarding the top of the line spanish guitars made in the workshops of Ibanez in the seventies. Please let me know,

    Best Wishes,

    Noud Koevoets

    1. Re: Ibanez Artwood Series
      Bert

Gr.Bert

      1. Re: Ibanez Artwood Series
        Noud Koevoets

        Hallo Bert,

Thanks for your comments on the AW-95. Regarding the TAMA -Ibanez- story I agree with you but not regarding the woods used in the AW 95 twelvestring acoustic guitar from about 1980. The sides and back are not laminated and the used woods are certainly not mahogany. This absolutely is indian
rosewood. The fingerboard as well as the bridge is genuine ebony. Remember this was the highest twelvestring model of the Ibanez Artwood series at that moment.
The interior workmanship is immacculate, comparable with
Martin! But in the contrary the sound in it’s original set up looses too much quality because of the way the
bridge (plastic!!) has been mounted. I finally decided to
place a narrow ivory bridge saddle and that improves the tone in a gorgeous way!

I recently bought a similar one as your Ibanez,an Aritst model.on EBAY fr $535 but also bought one in 2005 for $750 which was a sunburst Artist model. I feel $600 would be a going price in 2009. They are great value for the money. Both of these were used models in excellent conditiion. I currently have both. Steve

      Look it up at http://www.andyflett.com

I think you’re destined to stay in ignorance about it – I’ve been looking for ages. Even Ibanez don’t seem to want to know about that model. Strange, because it’s my favourite!

I have the H803610 Ibenez Roadster Bass. I bought it new in 1080, and have toured the world with it, and I’m still traveling with it. Haven’t had a single problem out of it. Beautiful bass to have in your arcinal of guitars (basses). No matter what anyone says, these bass guitars are awsome. As many of you know the letters are the month the guitar was made… in my case "H"= September … the two numbers after is the year of the make …. in my case 80=1980 …. and the remaining number tells what number the guitar came off the production belt…in my case 3610. So H803610.

The RS series is a year earlier than mine….RS800 for example is RS800 = Roadster Series 800. Roadster players seem to always keep their guitar (basses)….wonder why? Wonder why you can’t find many in the pawn shops? Because Roaster players know they have a great instrument.

Yes, it is a Roadster RS800 which they manufactured until the end of 1980. I own one myself which looks pretty much like yours. These basses offered a very good value for the money and still sound great.

Just to add to this great mess, I have a Roadster bass which is different to the others mentioned so far.

According to the serial number, it’s a 1980 model. It has a two octave neck (ie:24 frets) the headstock is 2 pegs on one side, 2 on the other, the body shape is the same as those mentioned here, it’s a sunburst, pickups are a straight and a split. Coolest thing is the active, yes active, pickups. A 9v battery slips in the back and there is a second switch to turn the active circuit on and off, as well as separate treble and bass controls. Those tone controls are a cut/boost type dial with a detent in the middle. For recording or for a live mix it is awesome, lets you cut through the mix for popping and slapping or stay back with some bowel shaking lows.

I love the old girl, and she’s in mint condition. If anyone knows anything more about this model, please let me know!

        Cheers,
        Glenn

GLENN, At last – this sounds like mine.
Had it since the late 80s. Bought it second hand off a friend. I love it. Its a sunburst colour and still plays beautifully 20+ years on.

Have been trying out new basses in various shops in London and can’t find anythng with such a diverse range of sounds.

So you have a picture of yours?

I have a very similar bass. I was told it was a 1978 Ibanez Road ‘STAR’ not Road ‘STER’. Anyway, it has a sunburst finish. A rectangular head stock w/ EA/top and D/G/bottom. Two pick-ups; a J neck and P bridge (both white for some reason). Active electronic toggle switch. Volume & Treble knobs and separate Volume & Treble for active use. Also it has a 24 fret maple neck that has incredible low action. Every guitar player in every band I’ve been in loved playing this thing. I got it from a friend in 1983, I think, or ’84 maybe. He had bought it new. I’ve since replaced the bridge w/ a Badass II and the pick-ups with Bartolini’s. I LOVE THIS BASS!!!!

i have a 1979 ibanez roadster bass that i’ve been playing for a few years. i’ve never been able to find anything about the bass and was hoping you could help 🙂

i can’t find any reference to this bass on the various Ibanez websites that are available.

there are very few distinguising marks apart from the serial number H790694

i’ve taken some pictures of the bass here:
      escapeact.com/richbass

would this be the RS800 model?

any info you have would be much appreciated!

  28. I'm selling a MINT 1973cs electric w/abalone Chalis on head stock.

I bought it new in 1973 and would be surprised if I played it 5 times over my lifetime. The sunburst guitar is in "sitting-in-the-case-for-23 years" condition. There’s the original case and two additional 1974 Dimarzio pickups. The abalone design weaves up the fretboard and there’s a Chalis on the head stock. If interested, please email me soon as I will be selling it on consinment soon at a local music shop. I could probably email pictures if serious.
