  1. Need more info getting mixed information
    Anonymous

I recently came across a sigma DM-18 guitar made in Japan. For Cf Martin.
I need more information as the number on the inside is legible but the first two letter are not?

I’ve looked it up many different ways but still don’t have the info I need to possibly sell .
PSE 27613? Looks like P but a tiny E under the top loop of the P

    Any info would be great!

    HI, I have a DT3-12 Korean made
Serial # 267362 on back inside brace.
Has a #803126 on the neck’s bottom looking from inside the hole. (curious what this # would be for..)
    Thanks so much.
Also, I see many asking what the guitar originally sold for new. and what a current value would be.
The guitar is in very good shape, no dings or noticeable scratches..
    Thanks so much!

Does an early 80’s, Made in Japan, all mahogany SE-19 have solid top and sides or laminate? Made in Japan is stamped/burned into wood.
Thanks for any help. Any guesses on value? It’s a single cutaway, nice shape, no case.

: I have a 80 anniversary also. Go in Yahoo, type Sigma Anniversary guitars for the search and the first one should be a web site called mudcats. Scroll down quite a wy’ll untill you get to the articles. there is one article writen by a guy named Guest , S. Webb (about almost a third of the way down). Its a big article on the history of sigma, it’s great. It’s everything you are looking for trust me! It also sayes something very interesting about our sigmas. You have to read to find out though. I will say we are very luck to have one and do not ever sell it. Enjoy

I have a Sigma SE-19 dreadnought thin body guitar purchased in 1982. The guitar is in great condition and includes a hardshell case. I am the original owner, and have played the guitar very little through the years. I like the guitar, but I just don’t play much any more. How much is the guitar worth?

      1. I have a SE-19 myself ...
        Harry O

I inherited a Sigma SE-19 from my brother decades ago. I just today tracked down a bunch of information about them. Only made in Japan in 1982 for that one year, so fairly rare. Found a dude’s sight who has some for sale ($495) with pics and info. Mine’s in great shape.

        Cheers,

Hi. I have an anniversary purhcased new in 1980. I understand it is a Martin D20 copy and if yours is like mine it sounds fantastic. It has a solid spruce top and solid mahogany back and sides, Although I cannot find anything other than a review on harmony central to confirm this. All told a great guitar

I too have the Sigma Anniversary bought around 1983 new in London. Plays beautifully – crisp tone and great with a fishman pick placed inside the guitar. Great tone through the aer amp. Powerful! I’ll never part with it.

        jesse

Got one. Serial # 606055 on the neck block.
My dad bought one of these guitars for my nephew. He bought it used from a music dealer a few days before Christmas. Included in the deal was a hole in the top on the lower bout a few inches beyond the end of the pick guard and near the joint with the lower side. The hole was about the size of a quarter. I repaired the top and sent the guitar to my nephew. The guitar played easy and sounded very good. A year or so later, I traded an electric guitar for the Sigma. I’ve had it for about ten years now.

Elle a été acheté chez Steve’s music à Montréal au début ’76.

Google Sterling Webb and Sigma acoustic guitar…takes you to a chat site with a lot of Sigma guitar lovers. go through the postings and pay particular attention to Sterling Webb’s comments. He seems to knows everything about them…except I still can’t get comments about the GCS-6. Though I did have an inquiry if I wanted to sell it.

    1. Re: Sigma GCS-4
      don sigma

As the last number goes up (ie GCS-4 vs. GCS-5), so too goes the quality of the guitar. I’m thinking a 70’s 4 is a solid top. look closely at the sound hole, If you’re as old as I am, you may want to use a magnifying glass. Look at the wood grain. It’s really simple to distinquish between plywood and solid stock.

Hi there, does anyone know if the wood on this model is solid? I have a sigma DM-2 and it sounds great but all plywood. I would like to know, I can buy one for € 450,- and that seems a bit over the top for me unless it’s in absolutely mint condition.

      Bob

Bought mine new about 11 years ago. Don’t remember the price. I’d had a 1968 Martin D-21 for years but had to sell it due to divorce’s money blues. Didn’t have high expectations about this guitar, but it has surprised me. Action is a little high, but it stays in tune, has a balanced sound, and every year gets richer. Great value. Sounds like you got a bargain, Ersten. BTW, anyone know why Martin discontinued the Sigma line? Also, how does a good Sigma compare to the Martin D-15?

Kind of late on the follow-up, but…
I bought one in ’85 or ’86, from a little shop in Hamilton, Ontario. I have played it constantly and the sound gets better and better over the years. Original price was about CD$600, but I managed to get it on sale for much less. If yours is anything like mine, you certainly got a deal.

I just bought a Sigma SDM-18 (around 15 years old) from a friend for $100. The web says they made these in 1994 t0 1997. Is that true?
Wow, you got a super deal. I just bought one from a guy who works hear in Silicon Valley, for $250. A real orange-gold color on the spruce top. It looked to be in great shape, but the action was high– about1/8th inch higher than I like. Took it to to my luthier, who pointed out the loose first fret and the bellying up that raised the bridge and action. He will superglue the fret then plane down the edge of bridge near the soundhole to get the lower angle for the strings. Neck is flat as can be, and the aged wood makes it sound like a DM with the treble turned up. I played it enough to assess the sound, from rich to shimmery, if you know what I mean…Repairs will likely run $40 to $100. So, it may indeed be a $350 guitar when all work is finished. But I like it! Maybe I will sell my Larrivee D-03R with pickups.

I have a DM-18 that I bought in Michigan around 1997…it was ten years old at the time. I paid $300 for it and a hardshell.

I spoke with a couple of guys at Elderly Instruments in Lansing, Michigan and they told me to take good care of it and hang on to it. They stopped producing Sigma Guitars in 2007, but have been phasing them out since the late 90’s. These guys said it’s value will only go up in time, so I’d say you got a good deal.

I’ve had a Sigma DM-18 since 1983, made in Japan, that I bought in Toronto and it is still my number 1 guitar even though I’ve bought a Larrivée a few years ago. These late 70s/early 80s Japan Sigmas are amazing guitars. Sounds as good as any high end guitars and plays much nicer than most guitars I’ve ever tried. It does go out of tune a lot though. I would never sell mine. I’m now looking at the Seagull Artist or Maritime dreads…played one recently and it blew me away!

        Ralph Morrison

I was considering the Sigma DM-18 instead of paying out the bucks for a Martin. I own a made in Japan DR-28. In my opinion the Sigma DR-28 sounds as good if not even better than my brothers HD-35. It may be the age of the Sigma. I play mostly banjo anymore. I may sell my Japanese Sigma. Have too many guitars. Not enough banjos. (501)305-9746

: : I have recently purchased a Sigma Mandolin model SM-6S and i was wondering if someone can tell me about this brand, I had not heard of it before.
: The SM-6S is, I believe, an "F" style mandolin, probably a carved solid spruce top, maple back and sides. The Sigma line ( both the guitars and mandoloins) are made overseas. Since 1970, they have been produced in Japan, Taiwan, and Korea. Opinions vary, but the Korean built models are widely considered the best. They are produced under the watchful eye of C.F. Martin Co. and they tend to be very well made. I am looking to buy an SM-60 but am having a hard time finding one for sale. I would appreciate it if you would email me if you were to know where I might find one! Thanks!

I purchased a Japanese made one back in the very early 80s. I played it on the road for awhile, and then put it away when I decided it was time to get a ‘real’ job. I pulled it out the other day after more than 20 years of non use. It was still pretty much in tune, the strings weren’t even too bad. It is a great instrument. What a lovely sound and soooo easy to play! Not sure if it is the model you are looking for, but the price tag said $375, plus $75 for the case. The price tag is still in the case and it said it was an A-1 if that means anything?

The mandolin manufacturer is Scott and there is a fleur-de-lis by the name on the head of the mandolin. On the back is a sticker that says SM60 and another that says made in Korea. Thanks.

A year ago I purchased an SM-6S from a friend of mine. He had purchased in back in 1970 and it appears likely to be one of the earliest ones made by Martin and this one in Korea. It has exceptional sound and very old timey sounding. My friend says he paid $800 for it in 1970 and I bought it for $500 from him. I have had offers to buy it as high as $2,000. But I want to keep it.

I bought my sigma DJ-3 in 1985. The bridge peeled up a little on one end. I had it repoace at a local guitar repair shop/ A Martin bridge was ordered at around $30 from Martin Co. With the price of teh bridge and the work, ir cost me around $85 Canadian. The guitar still plays well.

Contact Larry Zager @ Zagerguitar.com, He buys the Sigmas and has his guitars built like the sigmas. I think he told me that the Sigmas are built in Indonesia. Same quality materials juts cheaper labor. Zager then custom works his guitars with lower brigde and nut board for faster playing lower and wider string placement without buzz. Great value.

: Hi, replacing a bridge is a fairly routine item for a luthier. Bridges are frequently offered on ebay but it needs to be the right height. Martin actually sells guitar parts and build it yourself guitar kits so you really should have not trouble. A bridge should cost around $20-30, and do spend the extra for a good bone or tusk saddle

I love my DM3! I think I bought it for $275 about 10 years ago. It may not have the really clear, deep sound of a Martin but it’s very warm and very playable. I use it to record and it’s definitely my best songwriting buddy.

          1. I have a Dr 3 Sigma s/n 127008. The label is stamped on the center back brace and says Sigma guitar by Martin. I am sure that the back and sides are laminate wood, but not sure about the top. I would guess that the top is also. This dr 3 is built well and plays nicely. The sound is incredible for such an inexpensive guitar. The sound is sweet and loud. And, I cannot believe the harmonics! I am very impressed with this guitar and won’t ever let it go! Another great Martin product!

I have had a Sigma DM-3 for 26 years now.
I have never done anything more than replace the nut. It was cracked when dropped.
I love the sound and it has always played nice.
It was my first steel string acoustic guitar and has become an old friend over the years.
I’ve had 9 guitars over the past 28 years and I always seem to go back to that one.
As for the value in dollars, I couldn’t say. I think their between $150.00 and $250.00 but, I’ve never even thought about selling mine.
I guess it’s worth what you’d take for it.

I found this, In 1978, model designations were added to capitalize on Martin model numbers: the DM-18, DM-19, DR-28, DR-28H, DR-35, DR-41, and DR-45. They are called ‘Second Generation’ Sigma’s by C.F. Martin and featured solid wood top!
I really like mine and have had it for about 40 years and it still sounds good and looks new! solid wood tops make a difference.B64RQ

Hi, Your guitar is a Solid top DR7. That is D for Dreadnought, R for Rosewood back and sides, 7 for the best quality tonewoods available. I’m not sure what the 52 signifies. I think the top is spruce. Any Made in Japan guitars are worth more than the later versions made in Korea and Taiwan. There is no way to tell the age from the serial numbers as Martin used different factories and no obvious control over serial numbers. Price will depend on finding the right buyer for your guitar. However, if you are a player, I would recommend that you keep it as it will improve in value and tone as the years go by. The solid top versions are as good as low to mid priced Martins, they just don’t have the famous name and badge.

          Good Luck

: I have a Sigma DM 12-4 made in Korea, wiki says it after 1980, looking for year details etc, anything you can give would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi, you have a 12 string Dreadnought with mahogany back and sides. The top is probably laminate spruce. Some say that the first two or the last digits of the serial number denote the year of manufacture, but this is not reliable as Martin used different factories to produce their Sigmas. There should be a serial number on the brace in the body of the guitar, viewed through the sound hole. They were all hand inspected in the States before shipping to dealers. If yours was made in Korea it is definitely post 81. It’s almost a Martin. If you like it, keep it, but you probably won’t get another guitar close in sound and quality terms for the same money. IMHO they are fantastic value.

        Good Luck

There is no way to date a sigma by serial #. The best you can due is a bill of sale IF it’s from the original dealer and it’s a guess how long they had it for sale. I have a dr41, great guitar but it’s still not a martin. Went to a few "chain store" guitar shops and got the standard $100.00 sigma crap. it sold for $275.00 30 years ago! I let a good, respected martin restorer look and play. he felt it was worth, as a player, about $750.00 If had been a martin in the same condition and played the same….3 times as much. I went to guitar center and looked at a new MARTIN D18. What a P O S. I wouldnt take 10 0n trade for my dr41….and they wanted ten times what they say mine is worth. I did fing a martin I want. 1952 d31. It’s a cannon and it will set me back $3500.00 If you have a good sigma (some are not so ggod). keep it, play it. you will never get what it is really worth. Let the snobs have their way and we’ll keep getting good guitars for less!

Does Martin Guitars still handle Sigma Guitars? My great uncle gave it to me when I was 8 and I will never be able to play it so I don’t want it to go to waist. Thanks

      2. Re: Sigma Guitars info: DR-35
        Alan

I have a beautiful Sigma DR-35, with two internal numbers, one on the block at the base of the neck #905055, the other is on the inside, branded on one of the two back strips, #S23677. Does anyone have any idea as to their significance.

I’ve since invested in having the nut and saddle replaced with hand carved bone, and the frets and neck fine tuned for light strings — it plays so easy and sounds simply wonderful.

I can’t find any information anywhere. It was my grandpas guitar, I got it from him shortly before he passed away. I wanted to know how much it was worth, when it was made, all that good stuff. If anyone knows, please let me know ! THANKS A MILLION !

      Brian

      i have a Sigma 12 string model# DM12-4.
i dont know alot about them but i will tell i have seen this model sell for 5 hundred dollars in a music store with a cracked sound board.
I spent a lot of time working the actions as it was very poor, i perchased this guitar in the early 1980’s it has a great sound but poor action; i dont believe there is any collector value, and baset on playability it is average at best. so i expect to sell mine for about 400 and buy a Martin.
      i hope this helps.
      Regards Brian
