2 - WHAT HAPPENED TO THE 1998 GUITAR DATABASE?
The 1998 Guitar Database was renamed the "2000 Guitars Database" on November 8, 1998. Why the name change? To reflect the fact that there are now 2000 Guitar links on the site - over 1000 in the database and another 1000 on static HTML pages - and also to acknowledge that the database will be here till the year 2000 and beyond!
If your site still isn't in the database, submit it here
Enter the database from here
You can search the database several ways:
3 - "NO FRAMES" & NAVIGATION
If you don't like frames, you can navigate "1000 Great Guitar Sites" from the NO FRAMES page. This has direct links to 80 different pages on the site, all of which are also linked to at the bottom of every page, for your convenience.
For a full description of the 150 or so pages at the site, go to the
or contents page
Easy access may be found to the NO FRAMES option:
4 - KNOW YOUR KEYS
From: Kirk Lorange lorange@kirk.net
What's the key to knowing your way around music? Knowing your keys.
I'm not sure how the word 'key' would be defined in a formal music course, but as a self-taught musician, I define key as a 'family of notes and chords'. I know, I know... you've got to know your scales, but unless you have a context to work against, scales become meaningless. That context is, of course, the key that you're playing in. To my mind, there is only one scale -- the Major Scale
Tone Tone Semi tone, Tone Tone Tone Semitone.
All music comes from it.
From those seven scale notes, seven chords are born. Their qualities are:
Major, minor, minor, Major, Major, minor and half diminished.
If we're talking about the key of C, the scale is
C D E F G A B (C)
the chords are C, Dm, Em, F, G, Am and B half diminished.
So to me, 'key' refers to all those notes and chords.
There are 12 keys, one for each note of the chromatic scale. Know them backwards and forwards. Know, for example, what the 'six chord' is in each key instantly. This refers to the chord built on the sixth note of the scale (Am in the key of C). Know what the 'three chord' is, the 'five chord' etc.
Remember that all keys are the same, laid out like a seven room apartment floor plan (one key) in a twelve story apartment block (all keys, all music). If you know the lay-out of one floor, you know them all.

9 - POWER CHORDS
A "chord" (see note) which contains no 3rd (suspended chords, and chords containing 3 or more notes exempted)
* NOTE: Technically, a power chord is not really a true "chord" because, by definition, a "chord" has to have a minimum of 3 notes. Power chords are also called "5" chords, notated as C 5.
Power chords are neither minor or major and therefore either scale
can be used over top of them.
