1a - MP3

Winamp have recently released the new Winamp 2.0 MP3 player. Download it for free. Note that after 14 days they want you to pay at least $10 registration, which seems fair enough given the quality of music you'll be able to play with it for free!

Winamp is a fast, flexible, high-fidelity music player for Windows 95/98/NT. Winamp supports MP3, MP2, CD, MOD, WAV and other audio formats, custom interfaces called skins and audio visualization and audio effect plug-ins.

The latest version 2.0 has a string of new features:

- New codebase -- rewrote darn near everything from scratch.
- New GUI for EQ and Playlist -- yes, they're skinnable.
- New skinnable cursors for player.
- New playlist functions -- playback, windowshade mode, visualization...
- New, more accurate EQ.
- New output plug-in type, new support for DirectSound!
- New dynamic link section, with selectable web updates!
- New tone generator plug-in -- 40hz, baby!
- Pitch shifting, voice removal, echo DSP plug-in included.

Beasties Blast MP3s And Exploit The Net

In a move that probably surprises everyone and no one, the Beastie Boys became the first top tier act to embrace the net community and use MP3. Their efforts represent the most aggressive web marketing campaign by any band to date with MP3 adoption being just one part of their strategy. The Beastie's have taken online music marketing to the extreme in an effort to cultivate their audience. (They even devised an unique plan to counter bootleggers in the process.) Read about it at the classic MP3.com site: http://www.mp3.com/news/093.html

Xoom, one of the many free home page providers recently banned MP3s from their site which has artists in an uproar. Read the full article by Michael Robertson here: http://www.mp3.com/news/094.html

4 - PLAYING WITH 'FEEL'

Guitar Newsletter Winner
Guitar Newsletter
*** Prize-Winning Entry ***
Why is it that sometimes the simplest little three or four note phrase played by one musician can be far more impressive than a lightning-flash salvo of a hundred notes by another? 'Feel'.

What makes a record producer pick technically flawed Take 3 over perfect Take 4? 'Feel'.

What is this elusive quality called feel?

No one seems to have a pat answer to the question, but I see it as a measure of the human soul that shows through. Music is more than a bunch of notes and intervals. That's what computers spit out. Feel is a reflection of the human being who is making the music. Feel is the part that touches and moves the listener. Feel is the part you identify with when you hear a song. Feel is the element which makes people believe the artist, and turn him or her into a household name.

Where do you get it?

Some people are just born with it. They are so full of music, they can't help it. Others acquire it after learning their instrument well enough to forget their technique. But it all has to do with playing within your limitations and concentrating on the music rather than technique. Technical show-offs are generally devoid of feel because they're playing music for their own ends rather than for music itself.

A friend of mine thinks that the force of gravity is involved somehow. The scary part is, I know what he means!

5 - Technical ability of Yngwie Malmsteen & Joe Satriani
Thanks, Kirk, for that last article. Now here's a question for you all - does Yngwie Malmsteen have "feel", or just technical ability?

Marc Pattison has this to say:
"Just as I was about to graduate from high school, both Yngwie Malmsteen and Joe Satriani came onto the scene and made me re-evaluate my pursuit for technical expertise. In the long run, after learning many fast licks, I realized that soul and conviction and phrasing make up most of what people like to hear and fast playing is just like salt and pepper, and is often only needed in just the right dose."

6 - BLACKMORE'S NIGHT

What British guitarist played on hundreds of sessions in the 60's, worked as a back up musician for Jerry Lee Lewis, and today can be found playing acoustic Renaissance style music in small clubs and castles? Would you believe RITCHIE BLACKMORE? Blackmore, formerly the fret master, leader and prominent songwriter behind 70's power group DEEP PURPLE and RAINBOW, is these days playing the kind of music he has wanted to play for the past 20 years. Always known for his stage antics (which include trashing an ABC TV camera with a Stratocaster and blowing up a Marshall stack), the private musician is seemingly mellowing with age (53).

His current project, BLACKMORE'S NIGHT, is a step in a rather unexpected musical direction for a guy known more for power chords and loud assaults of improvisational guitar solos. BLACKMORE'S NIGHT is a refreshing musical direction showcasing a lighter, more melodic side of The Man In Black. BN has a definite Renaissance/Medieval flavor. The light, soft vocals of Candice Night add a nice peaceful touch to the overall sound.

Having heard several live shows from Japan, it is also safe to say that Ritchie has not retired his Strat permanently! He still knows how to rock the house down with his unique tone and picking techniques. His demolishing of guitars seem to be behind him though, as he is content to play Taylor acoustics, and 12 string guitars with a bit of Mandolin thrown in for good measure. BN first release has a couple of great surprises in store for the listener.

On the "Shadow Of The Moon" CD, Ian Anderson, of Jethro Tull fame makes a guest appearance and the band also does a respectable cover of OCEAN GYPSY, originally done by Annie Haslam and Renaissance. The American release of "Shadow Of The Moon" has a bonus track (one of 3 instrumental tracks off the release) called "POSSUM'S LAST DANCE", and it is a very intriguing piece from the guy who gave us HIGHWAY STAR and SMOKE ON THE WATER. There is a second release that is due in the near future. For up to date info on Ritchie and tour dates, check the official BLACKMORE web page.

7 - Melbourne Music News

from Age CitySearch Music Newsletter, by Jane Rocca jrocca@citysearch.com.au

The purveyors of hip-hop are coming to town. Make way for Public Enemy as they bring their turntables and politically sharp tongues to Melbourne for one show only. See them at Festival Hall on October 15.

Grinspoon waltz into town next month for what promises to be a night of loud guitar rock. The Brisbane boys are currently in the States supporting Anthrax and were recently nominated for this year's ARIA Awards. Still buzzing off the release of their debut album, Guide To Better Living, Grinspoon have gained maximum success for their high-speed tunes.

Pitchshifter are in town next week. Bringing their signature grindcore/techno/industrial warfare to Melbourne for the first time, the UK lads will spill the sensational sounds from their new album, www.pitchshifter.com

New York's Sonic Youth are youths no more! The 40-something guitar rockers bring their avant-garde guitar twang to Melbourne next month. Here to promote their new album, A Thousand Leaves, the quartet make the most of distorted guitars, wah-wah pedals and abrasive drum beats.

8 - 1998 Guitar Database

Sadly, the database area of the site (accessible from here) has been experiencing server difficulties, which seem set to continue for a while. I apologise for this, but it is entirely outside my control. My ISP, Vicnet, kindly provide free hosting for the database on their NT server, that runs ColdFusion (the application the program is written in). If anyone else is able to offer free hosting for a 6MB Access Database, I'd like to hear from you!

Meanwhile, for the next couple of weeks, if you get a server error, just try again a while later - it is frequently unavailable for short periods due to server overload - the site is just too darn popular!

Remember to checkout the keyword search function trial and let me know what you think.
