i just started learing that song yesturday and the strum is down down up up down..the first 2 downs are jsut the top strings, the ups are just the bottom strings and the last down is the middle strings

the song is public domain which means it has been around for quite some time. it also allows any one to slightly change the tune around and claim copyright to that rendition
laqering guitars
can anyone suggst a suitable laquer that can be cut and buffed for my new guitar???//

It really depends on what type of finish you are after. A basic nitro-cellulose lacquer is "sherwin williams gloss finishing lacquer, 24% solids". This is a great clear coat and can be tinted with appropriate dyes for any of a million colors. There are also custom fender colors from "reranch.com" High quality aerosol color matches. About $16.00 a can. Primers are important too.....

I wanna buy an electric guitar, but I don't have too much experience. Please give me advice, and write down, what problems should I pay attention, how can I recognize a "bad" guitar.

get a used one, because new guitars are really a rip off. it's like buying a brand new car, the value instantly decreases and a good used guitar should last a lifetime. And there are PLENTY of used guitars available for a fraction of the cost of the same guitar new. The other thing is buy an American made instrument. The quality is ten times better, and if you decide to sell it down the road it will hold its value. Imported guitars are usually extremely low quality and have zero resale value.
If possible, play it before you buy it. Even if you're just starting out and can't play a chord, just hold it and see if it feels "right." There are tons of shapes and sizes and features, and everyone has a different opinion of what is "the best."

The main thing to watch out for in a used guitar is the pickups. If they are ok then that is basically all that matters. Carefully examine the guitar and look for tiny problems like tuners - rusted, or pickup selector swith is rusted or dodgy! If you suspect anything at all is wrong don't think twice leave it alone! If you are after a new guitar, if you basically looking for a quality guitar then go buy what the salesperson tells you! Ask around what the guitar is like quality etc! If you are interested in tone and sound a lot then go buy your ear! Your ear is the most important deciding factor when choosing the right sounding guitar. You can recognise a bad guitar buy taking a look at it's hardware. Test it pull it, fiddle with it, see if it is sturdy and solid! The brand name is another vital factor! Usually a good brand will have good guitars. Dodgy brands will have bad guitars! If a guitar (2nd hand) is worn and looks scrapy chances are it will sound and behave scrapy! New guitars are the easiest and safest way to go to ensure quality! But the main rule is "go buy your ear first up, then buy your eyes"

i'm lookin to buy an electric guitar and it'll b my second elec guitar so i do have some experience. my last guitar was a squier affinity tele and even though a like teles this guitar obviously wasn't good enough. i'v been lookin for the type of guitar that can do from grunge to soft rock etc. and had my eye on the ibanez gsa 60 which i havent played yet cus the shop in my city that sells them are out of stock at the moment. i was wondering if you'd advise this guitar or another. ps my price rang would be up to around $255

Value or Find Guitars/Equipment/Sheet Music at Auction
Auction results can be searched at price guide http://www.antiquecast.com Sotheby’s is now included. The Antiquecast super search lists sale items at major auction sites. Pictures are often available. Although this site is pitched towards antiques and collectables anything auctioned can be searched. Concise searches are best with the 3 most characteristic terms. Worth a bookmark for ready reference.

i have an ibanez RG320DX with a floyd rose bridge and i was wondering what strings to use and how to fit them please help me.

My guess is that this guitar was strung with .009 gauge strings. you will want to use those again (if you want a heavier gauge string that requires some adjustments to the bridge and on a Floyd making adjustments is not fun!!). As far as the brand of string, it's all about what you prefer. On an Ibanez i've found that the GHS Boomers sound great, but that's just my opinion. To change them what you want to do is 1)cut the balls off the end of the strings, 2)insert the end of the string into the bridge( there will be a small screw that you will use to tighten the string in the bridge) tighten the screw. You don't want it too tight though otherwise the string can break very easily. 3) string the guitar as usual. You will need to tune it a few times once you get the strings on because the bridge has to adjust to the tension of the new strings, this may take a few times. That is really all there is to it. I hope this helps. If it doesn't, take the guitar to a qualified tech and he will show you how to do it. Good luck.

First off, what kind of setup do you have (not enough info...) you have to take off the back plate/cover and adjust the spring tension(if you're dropping down to c#, Oh by the way, are you going to tune to open C#? or just 1/2 down with all strings and then dropped "D" tuning from there?) on my guitar if I look at the side of the floyd rose bridge (with it installed, of course), I can see a little rectangular shape (it's actually a different metal) I don't know its purpose other than a gauge to tell you if your spring tension is correct. Look at the rectangle and see if it's parallel to the top of the guitar, or the pickup next to it, if it is you're pretty close to proper setting. I don't think it's ana exact science, but it oughtta help........

i would probably recommend something like a samick. Because these are fairly cheap guitars and will do the job for a learner. However if you spend that tiny bit extra, you can get a great deal! A great sounding guitar that will last you a lot longer! Yamaha has a broad range of "pacifica's" which are a very good deal! They got voted best guitar under $600. I think they retail at around US$230, so i would recommend this guitar for you! There are many other worthwhile guitars out there! But thew main message is look around for a good deal! Take the time to look and be completely sure of what you want before you buy anything!

If I could make a suggestion stay with the acoustic for a while I know it is tempting to want to go electric, but the basics are better learned on an acoustic. You can move to an electric later on, and by all means get a good quality guitar to learn with. Others may tell go cheap because if you don't continue playing you will have not invested much, so no big loss.
If you buy a quality guitar it will hold it's value and you can always sell it and get back most of what you paid for it if you lose interest, but if you continue to play you will have a quality guitar for many years.
Many new guitar players get discouraged and quit because their guitar is cheap, it sounds cheap and hard to play and it is frustrating. I don't know about the guitar you have, but you can usually find more about it either on forums such as this or at your local music store, anyway that's my advice keep on playing and

I have to disagree about the acoustic being the way for a starter. Remember how sore your fingers were when you started playing? Electrics are so much easier for a beginner to play. Easier on your fingers.
On top of all that, most "starter" acoustics are horrible to play.

Japanese Strat question
I have a white, Japanese Strat reissue. I was wondering if anyone knew what it is worth. The serial number is V018221. Does anyone know what year it is??

Fender has an axe dating function at their website. Also, the value is anywhere from $350-$650 depending on condition. I sold a vintage MIJ several mos ago for $650.00. It was in mint condition. These are great guitars and are increasing in value.
