You can get a Marshall VS100R combo for 500. That’s all I’ve got you haven’t listed. I’m in the exact same predicament you are. Tell me once you decided. ~k
: I’m planning on getting a new amp! The sound im looking for is the old metallica sound back in the late 80’s early 90’s! When they took all the mids out! I do have a Boss Metal Zone pedal that i can use if the amp would sound good with it! Here is what i’m looking at: a Crate GFX212 or a Peavey Special212 or even a Rogue Tuberider MHT-1000 2×12 combo? I’m on a tight budget! I can’t go above 00.00 ok if you have any other amps that i have not listed PLEASE TELL ME THANKS ALOT FOR THE HELP

Are you recording direct input or microphone. If you are probably losing some punch that you would get from a speaker. You can get by this by using some multi effects with speaker simulation, but it still won’t have the punch. If you have to record direct try using disortion with a little delay and compression. Also if the sound is flat you can try to up the higher end e.q., but it might be harsh on the ear. The only way around the harshness might be to use an exciter. Well I hope this helps. See ya.

If you attend any state educational institution such as a University, Community College, or Technical College, they are mandated to provide you with alternative media as part of your accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act. This means you can have any and all written/audio/visual materials transferred to a format that works for you.
Hope this helps. 🙂

Hey Jack. String tension equals spring tension. So… everything is affected by everything else. Action, angle of the bridge, how far the spring plate gets screwed into the wood etc. If you work on it for an evening you’ll have it! Stick to the same gague strings too.

: I do agree that self teaching is good, to a point. I have been playing for about 15 years, I spent the first 6 years taking professional lessons. I learned the guitar inside and out. I studied all different kinds of guitar methods along with beginning through advanced music theory. I would not trade that training for anything in the world. Playing along with the radio is great, but it is even more beneficial when you know what is going on and have an understanding of how things work (theorywise). I would recommend lessons FROM A PROFESSIONAL GUITAR TEACHER….not a friend down the street who can pick a few chords or can play a major scale really fast. Building on a good foundation is the way to go.
Look at Seagull acoustic guitars, one of the best for the money. If you learn on acoustic you’ll have a better foundation, develop your finger muscles and calluses. Good Luck

: Is it true that a JCM800 is gutsier than a JCM900 ???
I sold my JCM 900 several years ago to get an 800. I had have to say definitly yes. If you can find a JCM 800 channel switcher with reverb, and compare it to a dual reverb, will notice that the JCM 800 will eat the 900 and ask for seconds. Not only is it louder, It has all the gain you would need. An added bonus is that it is built way better (I’ve heard that the 900 transformers will burn up pretty easy). I’ve had mine for nearly 9 years with no problems, and I’ve carried it everywhere, dropped it, and basically put it through hell. However, those new JCM 2000’s sound pretty damn good…..

: I’d like a small type practice amp, preferably tube, that I won’t need to upgrade in 2 years. A 15 watt would serve my needs. No more than 00.00. Is this doable in this price range. Guitar is an (American) Strat. Apreciate your input. Thanks!
Thanks for the responses. I checked out the Fender Chanpion 30, written up in the musiciansfriend.com catalog. Looks promising. Also will keep an eye out for small used tube amps. May take awhile to locate a decent one. Any sites on the web selling used equipment that I could check out? Thanks!

I recently went through the same situation as you. I decided on the Fender Champion 30,about 09. It is solid state but has a special Fender tube emulation device in it. It has clean and gain channels and reverb. I love tube amps but am VERY impressed with this amp. I highly recommend trying it. As other tube amps with these features can cost a lot more

I agree with Rick, never stop teaching yourself but, after 25 years of playing, I started taking lessons. It is amazing how a credible teacher can open your eyes to techniques that you (or at least I) couldn’t figure out on my own. My experience has taught me that some of the best teachers are not teachers at all, just people you jam with. You learn some licks from them and vice-versa. This may sound like a no-brainer, but playing along with cds can help tremendously. My prefference is classic rock but have found that country music is easy and fun to learn.
For what it’s worth,

Learn some scales and practice them over and over until you don’t think about them any more. Play them straight through, or backwards, or skip notes, or play other little patterns. Eventually it should fall together.

For around 50 you can get a used Soldano Atomic. It is only about 20 all tube watts but has great tone. Tons of gain so you wouldn’t need the metal zone. A boost pedal helps out if you want more gain. It is a little on the bright side but so was Metallica in their fine days. Scooping the mids sounds great with this amp. I use mine for death metal.
If you want something louder, a used Rivera Knucklehead 55 can be found for about 00 with some effort. 2 channels all tube: 1 is high gain Marshall type and the other is pretty Fenderey and clean. This amp is very very loud for 55 watts. Plenty of volume for any type of gig.
For less cash a used Peavey VMT is a grfeat deal. I’ve seen them for around 50-00. They don’t sound as good as the other two but a good quality, high gain, all tube amp for the cash.
The Soldano and Rivera amps are high quality and well worth the money. They will keep their value unlike The Crate, Peavey, and the Rogue. Having tubes is essential for Metallicas tone.
Hope this helps!

It is NEVER too late!!! If you are 23 now and you are afraid that you are too old at 30 then answer this- How old will you be in 7yrs from now if you stopped playing guitar? Just a hopeful bit of encouragement to you from one player to another. The truth is that you can and undoubtedly will be enjoying music for many years to come! So forget about your "age" and enjoy the ride. (simple math proves that in 7yrs you will be 30 anyway-with or without the ability to play and enjoy the Guitar) I hope that helps – The world can NEVER have too many Guitarists!!!

That’s probably not alot older than your parents. 2 things a)Angus was born in Scotland, as was Malcolm and b)Malcolm is tiny too..theyre both really short. Malcolm is a few inches taller, not nearly a foot… How tall is Angus exactly?

Hi Paul, great name you got there 😉
I too have small fingers and used to have that problem of my finger slipping under the adjacent string when bending and have a few suggestions as to how to correct it…I tried a few bends just then and realised I often use my pinky or ring finger for big bends with three to four fingers on the string to help with the bend. All my fingers come down on the string quite vertically and so I find the adjacent string rests quite nicely on the fleshy bits of my fingers just in front of my nail, and if the bend is released smoothly the string shouldn’t ring and using more than one finger relieves the pain…I also used to use my index finger to control the adjacent string by either bending it aswell to keep it free and out of the way, or just making sure it mutes the string so it doesn’t sound…I hope this helps
Paul

: I am 27 years old and for some reason I spent all of my free time growing up playing sports instead of learning how to play musical instruments. I regret it now. I have found an interest in guitars and I have been thinking about learning how to play. So my questions are:
: I am most interested in owning and learning how to play the 6 string electric acoustic guitar(I love the sound!), but is this the best thing to start off with? Should I just get an unplugged one at first? I also had someone recommend that I start up learning the bass first because there are just 4 strings to learn. Is this a good idea? I really don’t think I would have the time to buy two different kinds of guitars. Finally, what is the best way to learn to play on your own? Computer software, books, videos, etc.? Thanks to all who have taken time to read this and respond to me.: Mike
: Hey.
Mike, I am 19 years old and I have been playing for 6 or 7 years now. I am completely self taught. I think you should get any style guitar you want to learn on. If you want an electric acoustic, you should get one. You can find a complete range of beginner guitars for descent prices. You should just stick to what your ear likes and definately try to play a bunch of different ones (or at least hold them and feel them if you cant play yet) before you buy one. If you want to play guitar, by all means get a guitar and not a bass. They are two completely different animals. Just take some time and get what you want so you’ll be more likely to stick with it.As for learning, my advise is to just put in the time. Dont worry about getting lessons. Just go get a book that shows you how to tune it up, how to play some chords, and maybe some simplple chord progressions along the lines of Beatles tunes or Tom Petty or Van Morrison. Then, just play. Learn how to play the chords, and you can teach yourself everything else by playing with the radio.

Good question, The 3-way toggle does select the pickups to be used. If it is in the Les Paul tradition, flipping the switch upactivates the neck pickup, in the middle activates both pickups, and down activates the bridge pickup. The knobs control the volume and tone of the pickups. The top knobs control the neck pickup ( I think, it could be the other way around)that is, the top-front controls the volume and the top-rear controls the tone of the pickup. The bottom knobs work the same way but with the other pickup. If you use both pickups, all four knobs are used, you just have to play with them to find a tone that you like. When I had my Les Paul I favored the center position with the volume and tone controls maxed. Anyway, I hope this helps!

I bought a used Crate "Vintage Club" amp (15 watts, all tube) for about 30. It’s got a pretty decent tone with its internal 8" speaker. If you get a 16 Ohm cabinet, you can connect it to the speaker out. I run it through a 4X10" Peavey cabinet and it sounds great. There’s basically only one good tone in it, but that tone is awesome.
: I’d like a small type practice amp, preferably tube, that I won’t need to upgrade in 2 years. A 15 watt would serve my needs. No more than 00.00. Is this doable in this price range. Guitar is an (American) Strat. Apreciate your input. Thanks!

Start by checking to see if all the wires are soldered solidly to the controls…don’t forget to check the toggle switch.
It doesn’t happen to the neck pickup at all? You might check the wires coming from the pickup itself too.

HI, i am looking to buy a compact, affordable (used) all tube amp for guitar. I want it for jazz & blues. To give you an idea, the sound I am looking for is in the likes of Larry Carlton etc: & a clean jazzy tone. I would be grateful for any ideas on this.

Hi all,
I’ve been playing guitar here in Perth for 6 years now and I’m currently studying Classical, Jazz, and Rock Guitar.
I am doing a project for school but came across a problem… I can’t seem to find a biography on Angus Young. Is this because they are rare and lies, or is it because they don’t exist. If anyone has a digital copy could they please email it to me as it’s quite urgent.

Hmm.Your problem is simple. When bending notes, place your fingers flatter(not too flat)against the fret board. This way your nail won’t slip under the other string, causing the string to slip over it.This should cure the extra ringing as well.Because the tip of your finger will mute the other string. Also, try muting the other strings with your palm heel as you release the bent note. With some practice, you’ll get it.
Hope this helps. -

I am 27 years old and for some reason I spent all of my free time growing up playing sports instead of learning how to play musical instruments. I regret it now. I have found an interest in guitars and I have been thinking about learning how to play. So my questions are:
I am most interested in owning and learning how to play the 6 string electric acoustic guitar(I love the sound!), but is this the best thing to start off with? Should I just get an unplugged one at first? I also had someone recommend that I start up learning the bass first because there are just 4 strings to learn. Is this a good idea? I really don’t think I would have the time to buy two different kinds of guitars. Finally, what is the best way to learn to play on your own? Computer software, books, videos, etc.? Thanks to all who have taken time to read this and respond to me.Mike

Hi, I have relatively small fingers so when I do a string bend, my fingers tend to slip under the adjacent string… but a lot. This causes two problems: (1) when I release the bend, it sounds the adjacent string, (2) it hurts a bit. The action on my guitar is pretty low–is lower the answer?
So… is it correct technique to bend _under_ the adjacent strings, or I should I bend the adjacent string along with it? What is good string bending technique?
Thanks much!

I have that feature on a few of my programs….once you get the hang of it its pretty easy……I think it goes something like this: hit the assign button and it will say ExPDL(expression pedal)and will flash back and forth to what its set for…..now punch the rhythm(and its also got an arrow for scroll right) 3 times…..it will now say CNTFS(control footswitch)and flash to what it is set for….now spin the wheel till you find the rhythm setting……you also may have to set it to toggle(your other choice is momentary…which you dont want because youd have to hold your foot on the switch all the time)…..then just hit store and your all set……a cool feature of this is that you will be able to change programs without disturbing the drums…..so if you have it set on one of your programs you can now scroll through your others….but you must go back to the original program to shut it off with the foot switch….have fun…Trip

What kind of details are you looking for? By the number I can tell it is a 1996. The Epiphone serial numbers are some of the most confusing out there. The company did not keep track of things until the 90’s. This is when they set up their current standard for serial #’s. :
The first digit, the letter, indicates where it was made. Epiphone has used many factories for production. Two of the most popular are (S) Samick and (R) Aria. I’m not sure which factory F stands for.
The second digit is the year. 6=1996. The remaining numbers are numeric codes for the company. Possibly what week (020) and the 206th guitar of the day.
If you email Epiphone they usually will answer any question you have. I inquiured about my 80’s Epiphone and they said they have no record of it being made.Hope this helps!

I think the clicking you hear are the springs being stretched.Spray a little WD-40 on them and bend the tremelo for a while,to loosen it up.The low E buzzes
because you might need a setup done on the neck. Also,
ask your repair man for a grind and polish on the
frets. This should even them out so you could play with
a lower action.
Good Luck -

Hi, yes, although I am a woman, I am a guitarist and have played most of my life. I am looking to buy a Antoria Les Paul Custom, I would prefer a Golden Antoria as I used to have one in the 70’s, although I would consider a Sunburst. During the mid 70’s and early 8o’s I owned several Antoria Les Paul Customs and to me they played better than the original. The only draw-back is that the Les Paul, or the Antoria Les Paul Copy, is a bit heavy for a female of my build and as a result over the years I have either used SG’s or Fenders, but I just don’t get on with them at all and I don’t like the feel or the action of them although I prefer the SG to the Fender. I am not interested in modern Les Pauls as I think they are rubbish. I would like to get my hands on an early 70’s Les Paul, but unfortunately for several reasons including financial I am unable to do this right now. Therefore I really would like to lay my hands on an early 70’s Antoria as mentioned above. As far as your guitar is concerned it all depends on what you want to know? Are you just looking for a valuation? If so it all depends on the condition. But as far as a dedicated musician is concerned such as myself, the price of the guitar means nothing! It is all down to personal choice and which guitar is suited to your handling, your capability, action, and so on, and when you find the right guitar for you then that particular guitar becomes almost priceless to that musician. If you know anyone who has a Golden or Sunburst early 70’s Antoria Les Paul Custom, please, please let me know. In the meantime if I can be of any assistance to you please drop me a line. Regards. Talisa

What kind of guitar is it? Where is the switch located in relation to the other controls? If it’s a Gibson Super 400 or L5 type it’s a little easier than if it’s right next to the volumes and tones….
It should only cost 5-0 to have it done by a pro.

I need to change a pick-up switch on an old Ibanez EX series. It’s a five way switch to two humbuckers and a single coil. It doesn’t respond well when the switch position is changed. Plus I need to change my pickups also. I’ve never changed any of this before and my guitar needs full reconstruction. Does this need to be done by a local repairist or can I do it myself.

Dude, The guy asked for some advice on buying a first electric, he doesn’t need to start thinking about upgrades and after-market pickups quite yet. I agree with you that, if he wants to play some jazz, he should stay away from Ibanez (at least their solidbody’s). But, as for your thoughts on Fender, I can’t disagree more, true, the Mexican Strats aren’t the greatest, they don’t have the same quality of workmanship that the American Strats do, but let’s not forget this is a FIRST electric. I would recommend a Mexi Strat to anyone buying an electric that doesn’t want to (or can’t) spend alot of money on a guitar. For a starter electric, I can’t think of a more versatile guitar than a Mexi or Japanese Strat. But, you are soooo right about the Squire’s….CRAP!!!

What do you gotta be a surgeon to get one of theses things calibrated and intonated? If I raise the thing even a small amount, I cannot get the guitar to stay in tune, when I tighten the low E, all three bottom strings go out of tune and vice versa. And then the action’s all messed up and the Floyd is all tilted and angled. What the hell?

If you spend money on a head and then try to run it without a cab you’ll be more than flat
broke — you’ll be flat broke needing a new transformer for the head (expensive!). To reiterate,
you cannot run a head without a cab. Moreover you need a cab that matches the impedence
(ohms) of that head. Take Rey’s advice and buy the best combo amp you can afford. that way at least you
(probably) won’t blow up your investment. There are some great ones out there, and you
can still hook up an extension cab to most of them later on. -

Ask your stuff here, and lots of people will help you.
There are other good pickups out there PAF-wise, especially if money is no object. Fralins or Harmonic Designs are both supposed to be great but really pricey.

Yes. If it’s a tremelo guitar, you may have to adjust the springs in the back of the guitar, you may or may not have to then fix the intonation. If it’s non-trem, you’ll probably just have to re-intonate it. I can walk you through this stuff if you need me to, just say so.

Here is what you do. Buy a used VOX wah off ebay or where ever. Then go to fullton.com and buy the clyde upgrade kit for your wah. This will replace some of the shit parts used in the present day vox wah’s and it will also become true bypassed which is important for your overall sound. It is easier then it sounds and for aound a 100$ you will not be able to find many wah’s that are better. I just bought a 250.00 fulltone clyde. AWESOME pedal but 250.00 and the vox modification is very close to the reg. fulltone.

Alright if your looking for a GOOD guitar then a fender strat is a bad idea. They are great don’t get me wrong but only the high-end strat — at least an american stadnard or better. The thing is they are overpriced. You are paying a lot of money for a start that you will need to upgrade to make it sound good. Ibanez sounds like a mistake if you want to play any jazz. How about a strat copy and put some really good pickups in them. You can keep the pickups when you upgrade the guitar and that it would sound as good as a 700.- strat amongst the fact that if you are starting out you prob. will not have the best amp and a bad amp will make any guitar sound like shit.
Take a look at the entry level yamaha’s. They aren’t that bad. Don’t buy a squire strat!!
good luck -

These amps are still around. I got mine several months ago and it is pretty cool. They won’t work in live applications, really. They are the Smokey amps. They sill come in the "cigarette" boxes, you can get them in practically every brand. They also are available in some cool hard plastic models in various colors. The cool thing is, believe it or not, these tiny little guys can power a 4×12 cabinet, or you can use it in an effects chain as a fuzz box. Quite cool!!! Musicians Friend has them, but you can find them in almost any music store, they run about 25-30 bucks. I hope this helps.

No.I don’t think so.Guitar magnets tend to be very strong, made from metal chunks(Alnico, ceramic).I think it would take a lot more to harm them. The main concern here is the coil windings, very delicate. But another magnetic source should’nt bother them either.

That would be an ES-345, not a 245. I don’t know the price of them, but if it plays nice and sounds good, why worry about it? If it’s for insurance purposes tell them it’s worth about 500 or so.
You may check prices at Elderly Instruments, see if they’ve got one similar, they’re online, just a do a search on their name. There’s also an online place called Vintage Guitar Buyers, or something very similar…you might ask them.
: My father purchased this guitar in 1962, I believe the model is 245 and is still in original case. I have a good idea it’s value, but would like another opinion. The guitar is in mint condition and is cherry in color.

You can tell from the serial number usually. There’s a bunch of info on http://www.gibson.com
By the way, the Kalamazoo ones are way better made than the Nashville ones
: I own a ’77 Les Paul Standard and would like to know where this guitar was manufactured, Nashville or Kalamazoo? -

: what is the best bang for the buck as far as 15-watt amps go? ive been looking at crates, squiers, and fenders.
I’ve owned a gorilla, a pv, a Fender Frontman, and a
Vox Pathfinder. the Gorilla was horrible. the PV was ok. the Fender was ok. The Vox Was the best. Low price, lots of sound. a real good deal. -

here’s the deal, I intern at a company called digevent.com… they asked me to go online to message boards and stuff and spread the word on a show we do. We do live interactive webcasts… One of our shows is a guitar show. It is totally interactive, with live audio and video, and also has slides that go with it. It will work and any internet connection, from 28.8k to cable and dsl. We have live shows every friday at 4:00pm pacific time, but (and this is part of my job) we archive every show so you can watch it any time of the day any amount of times. We have no advertisers, and we don’t make you pay. It’s totally worth checking out….
here’s the url
guitarmania.digevent.com
We do have some free giveaways, we’ve been giving away guitar world magazine subscriptions, and the praxax. So check it out.
Thanks
Phil
(please post a followup and rate the site!!!)
I wanted to add that the instruction is for beginner to advanced, and if you use a gt-5 or gt-3 then you will really love this show!
thanks again! -

There’s nothing wrong with my amp, I’m just thinking about changing them for two reasons. I’ve had the amp for over 10 years and never changed them, and I am interested in changing the tone slightly.
: : Why new tubes? Are the originals broken – maybe dropped your amp. Vacuum tubes are very durable and your problem is probably not the tubes. Many years ago I thought I needed new tubes and took my amp to the "electronics" guy. He replaced the "fuse" and charged me 5.00. Ouch. I always check the fuses first.

I have a Line 6 spyder 210 combo. The Tubetone speakers are’nt the best, but it comes with some great affects that give me the perfect industrial edge sound. If your really up for some industrial poundage….then go for either Line 6 products… or Roland. Roland is expensive, but they have awesome effects that will blow you away. Check some stuff out on ebay. I know a guy who has had his Roland Amp for over 10 years, and it still sounds perfect. Roland is the way to go, trust me. But it cost $$$, goodluck.

Funny you mention these 2 pick ups – I just switched from an EVO to an 81 – I play stuff in the Glassjaw/Mudvayne/Deftones/Nothingface vein of things – Much much better w the 81 – more clarity – the cleans aren’;t bad – most people bitch the 81 sounds artifical clean – but it’s not bad – I just turn my volume down to clean up -so tkae my opinion on the clean for what it is worth. Peace –

I took it to a guitar shop and they gave me an estimate. They said around $700 as compared to around $1000 for the les paul. i would think your best bet would be go directly to Gibson with the serial #.

: Hey, don’t let this serbian get to you. Millions of people all over the world play guitar for the pure enjoyment of it. Spend as much time as you have to devote. Pick up your guitar and hold it while watching tv or whatever. After a while it just feels good and feels like it belongs in your arms. Also many people have "natural" talent and don’t take 6 hours a day, seven days a week and 15 years to play guitar like some yugoslavians.

: Get a book. Learn chords and songs. More chords and more songs. Then more songs/tunes. All the while learning scales and barr chords. Learning songs builds your chops, repatoire (sic) while keeping the learning interesting. Learning songs sets goals for learing chords, rythems and gives you closure to a task. A sense of accomplishment. Learn songs.

Hi; Solid top means the front of the guitar is real wood as opposed to plywood. You can usually tell by looking at the edges of the soundhole ( the round hole beneath the strings). Of course, the salesperson should be able to supply that info, but this is the main difference, if it is plywood you should be able to see the laminations, if it is solid wood you should be able to see the grain. Solid top guitars are usually more money and better guitars. Happy shopping, Jim

If you like these solos and want to learn them, then that’s cool!! Nobody learns in a vaccum. We are all influenced by our guitar heros, anyone who says they’er not is lying! So,instead of worrying, tape some chord progressions and solo to them. While you’re doing this,
throw in some Iommi and Perry licks. You can also create
variations of these riffs and make them your own.My point is,develope your style on your own and use what you’ve learned from those guys! This is how we do it.
Good Luck -

Hi folks,
My name’s Lindi Hobbs, out in Colorado Springs, Colorado. I don’t play any instruments, but my 12 year old son has turned into quite a talented classical guitarist. It’s time to get him a "serious"
guitar, as opposed to the little learning piece he has now. I’m going to be in Albuquerque next month, and I understand one of the best guitar manufacturers, Pimentel has their headquarters there.Anyway, I’ll be, as they say, a "babe in the woods" doing my shopping. My brother will be with me, but while he plays, he insists he doesn’t know much about purchasing guitars either.
Question: I’ve been told to make sure the guitar has a "solid" front and back … but how the heck to I tell? I’ve seen nice guitars that look like they have two kinds of wood on the back, but they’re "solid
back" anyway. So what does "solid" mean? no holes? well, I hope not!Anyway, if you folks have any pointers on what to look for and what to steer clear of, I’d be grateful.
Thanks and take care ~ Lindi

OK, I advise you to buy a guitar that has thin bar, because probaly he has small hands.. I would advise antonio sanchez model 1025, it is about 800 dollars, it is very good even for concerts. I have one and very happy. it is really hard to find this guitar in america. if you can afford buy the 1035 model. good day

Hi there..
I hope someone of you can help me with this. I just want to give a full "metal" FX to my guitar (like "white zombie"’s or "powerman 5000"’s etc..)recording to my PC.. Every time i try to do it, the recorded sound is really weak and low even if clipping.
So, do you know what kind of FX they use to get this sound, and how to hard-disk-recording it?? Do i need a special software or just equalize in some ways the signal from my multi FX processor?
And what kind of FXs do i need from my multi FX, and in which way do i need to chain them??

I am a blind guitar player. Because of this, many instructional tools are not the best for me, because they usually depend heavily on the written/printed part of the instruction. Do you have, or know of any instructional material, that gives good spoken direction, on CD, video, etc?
I would like "I will then fret the A string on the fifth fret, and slide it to the seventh fret, and then pull off back to the fifth", rather than "watch what I’m doing, and you’ll get the idea". I have been playing guitar for around 20 years, so I am somewhat comfortable with the basics of the instrument, but just don’t always understand what is being demonstrated, when the spoken word is not given.
Thank you for your help!! By the way… I primarily play acoustic finger style guitar, and love the blues, folk, and jazz.
Respectfully Yours,
James Kelm

Just do an pentatonic on it and see it`s quite the same, then give some feel to it and you`ll see, sometimes your own solo is even better

I’ve been playing guitar for about one year and 3 months. Lately I’ve been jamming on songs like Paranoid by Black Sabbath, and Walk This Way by Aerosmith.I try to play the solos note for note from the album. When I’m soloing am I developing a Joe Perry style and Tony Iommi style of soloing by learning the solos note for note. I think by playing note for note it will have an adverse effect on my soloing style.Know what I’m saying? What should I do?continue learning note for note on the solos or should i somehow learn to play my own patterns???

First I listened to guitar players I really liked, like Frank Zappa, Carlos Santana, Jerry Garcia, and John Cipollina. And I had a friend that was a really good guitar player, and he taught me a lot of stuff. And then I got method books at the local music stores, like "Lead Guitar" and "Slide Guitar" by Green Note Publications. That was about 30 years ago 🙂

: I would also like to hear Comments from owners.
: Thanks as any input is appreciated.

AnthonySS, I just purchased one through a mail order gig in PA.
The Guys Name is NEAL of Neals Guitars. He has a web site in the
classified section of guitarsite.com Prices range from 1800 to
2400 from what I have seen. I spent about 3 months looking for one.
There where 2 in NYC that where trash. Bought where too much money
for what they where. I can tell you though when you try them out
in strumming the 6 or 12 string the whole body of the guitar should vibrate
to me that says it has a true heart (quality wood). Take your time to look
There are some beautys out there. The ones made in 71 my understanding are
the real popular year. Then when they re-issued them in 91. Gibson took
there time and made a quality guitar. I also found out that the cherry
colored ones are the better ones for resale. Then the brown then the white.
If there is anymore I can help you with just EMAIL me. Happy hunting PEACE
R.D.-

Hi,
The professional series was made as Japaneese production copies of American models. They discontinued them cause they were less pricey, but similar quality to the US stuff and people bought them instead of they more expensive USA Jackson. They are excellent guitars and demand a bit more than other Asain Jacksons.(Like the current production PS models.)
As for which model it is I would say it is a Stealth. It came in deep metallic blue. It usually had the sc, sc, humbucker pickup config, but a few had 2 hums with a sc in the middle. Are the dot inlays ofset or in the middle of the fretboard? What type of wood is the fretboard?
I have seen these go for as much as 00 in near mint condition.Check out some of these Jackson/Charvel web sites. These guys know quite a bit about Jacksons and have allot of info on their sites.

I’m trying to find out what model of Jackson I have to find out how much to sell it for, but can’t find it on Jackson’s website or in the "Blue Book of Electric Guitars". It was purchased in ’93, is deep metallic blue, Strat style body, 22 frets, white dot inlays, 2 humbuckers, 1 single in the middle, Floyd Rose trem wiht black hardware. It is Japanese made and has "Jackson Professional" on the headstock. Any ideas??

i am also suffering from the curse of not knowing what my guitar is. It is a Jackson Superstrat (i think) with the offset flying V style body. It is very dark transparent green with rosewood fret and maple neck. The headstock is black and so is the hardware. It has two twin coil Jackson branded humbuckers and says Jackson Performer on the head. I think it is a 1993 model, and the number on the plate that connects the neck to the body is 9605126. Any help would be appreciated. cheers.

I’m 99.9999999999999999999999999999999999999% positive you have a screw in type which means it will swing. If you tighten it too much you could do a great deal of damage to the threads on the bar and bridge. I like the plumbers tape idea. That could actually do the job put you’ll have to replace that pretty often as you unscrew the bar. I seriously doubt you need a new one!

pick something that you like, and that characterizes your music, with disregard to what anyone says, because the public doesnt understand, and will never. they just want to sing along like the mindless drones that they are. youre the artist, youre in control. they will like whatever you tell them to like.

is your guitar sanded or are you going to paint on a finished guitar? That makes a big difference on what type of paint you use. nick is right, use an air brush. Any thick layers of paint will probably alter the sound. Try putting your hand where your going to paint & strum.

My name is Greg Paugh and I have just completed my first CD made 99% with guitar synthesizer. My Project/Band Name is "Radiowave" my CD is "Journey Thru OZ!" Listen or download my music for FREE @ http://www.mp3.com/radiowave or feel free to buy my CD.
I created all 9 soundscapes and performed and recorded them in my State-Of-The-Art, home based, project recording studio in under 3 weeks time (part time) in the month of February, 2001.
I used a Godin LGX-SA midi guitar into a Roland GR-33 to control my Roland XV-5080 rackmount synthesizer. All playing on all sounds, tones, sound effects and atmospherics were played on the guitar – without sequencing. Steinberg’s "NUENDO" was my digital audio workstation recording platform. My amplification was a Johnson JM250 1/2 stack run direct into a TC Electronics "Gold Channel" channel strip into a RME "Hammerfall 9652" audio card.
I have already been getting good placement on the charts of mp3.com all 9 soundscapes are in the #13-104 ranking on their charts by various categories and over 4,000 download/plays in under 7 days time since I uploaded my CD and started the mp3 account on 2-28-01.
I have also had several contacts regarding possible film scoring work and radio station play as a result of my unusual soundscapes.
It’s been really surprising for me to say the least.
My soundscapes are all played on guitar synth (99%) or regular guitar (1%).
My sound is unique and involves a tremendous amount of modulatory wide-stereoscopic tones that are often combined with traditional sounding instrument tones and dark choirs in addition to unique ambiences and natural and un-natural environments. The soundscapes have been described as "Powerful", "Mellow", "Relaxing", "Scary", Sci-Fi", "Meditative" and "Unusual". Indeed, an unusual Yin and Yang of descriptives.
All artwork on my CD is also designed by me and is descriptive of the title "Journey Thru OZ!" since I am based out of Wichita Kansas…The land of OZ.
Check out my site at http://www.mp3.com/radiowave and feel free to post a link to it and this info on your site for any references to guitar synthesizer musicians if you are interested.
Please email me at [email protected] and let me know what you think of my first project "Journey Thru OZ!" and it’s use of midi guitar.
Sincerely,
Radiowave – Greg Paugh

Anybody know of a website or anyplace where I can find out information on my Marshall amp?
I bought it used, and I am trying to figure out when it was made and that kind of stuff. I looked around Marshall’s page, but I couldn’t find anything on my particular model.
Thanks for any help given.

To Brandon and Tim Fall Re:Boss BR8>CD I have had the same problem and couldnt find any answers from Boss or Roland. However i did visit zzounds.com and asked one of their technicians.Who told me i have to get a stand alone CD Recorder (HHB CDR 8500)But it costs 700 Quid.He also said something about taking the main output of the BR8 direct to the computer then taking the data and burning to cd.Im sorry this isnt as helpful as you probably wpuld have liked. But if you find out anything useful yourself about the BR8 To cd connundrum i would appreciate it if you could let me know. You are welcome to e-mail me concerning this [email protected]

I don’t know when this was posted, do maybe you’ve already figured out the solution to your problem, but I’ve had the BR8 for awhile and pretty much no everything there is to know about it, so I thought maybe I’d drop a line for the fuck of it and see if maybe I can help: Yes Roland has definitly gotten their shit together as far as providing extended software online for the BR8, and yes they do have downloadable applications that will give you what your looking for, but for my money the easiest way is through wave studio. It’s an extended application, part of the latest version’s of SOUND BLASTER LIVE, and I use it becuase it gives me greater freedom in that I can cut and paste any area of the song, and you can also add effects. When I’m finished with a piece of music, I’ll line out the BR8 into the audio input jack of my computer, open up wave studio, simply press record in the program and press play on the BR8, after I’ve mixed all the tracks down. If you have any other questions about the BR8, feel free to e-mail me at [email protected] – P.S. I play guitar in a band and we record strictly on the BR8: I think you’d be surprised at the quality of our work and if you’d like to hear something then let me know – NEWT

Hey Guys,
I am starting a search for one of these monsters. I am looking to purchase a good/used model.
Does anyone have any input on values? Most I have heard of are in the 1.5K range.
Also does anyone know of any for sale?
I would also like to hear Comments from owners.
Thanks as any input is appreciated.

If you were a beginner and looking for a B chord and you find this, what would you think? Just in case im reading that wrong , if you were to bar the second fret, wouldn’t the bar be shown like the Bm? -

hey dude, you M from the vaichat board? never mind if your not.
stubby fingers are a problem, but you know, hendrix had stubby fingers! anyway, try physical excersies like trilling, stretching and general widdling.. ive widdled every day for hours for a few years now, and my hands are really very very physically different, with my fretting hand having slimmer fingers.
you could try lipo-suction ho ho ho!

I have the same problem but I would not want slimmer fingers. I always buzz some of my strings. I am thinking the PRS wide thin neck might help or a guitar with a wider neck. You can also have a custom neck made to compensate for this. This is what I will eventually have to do. See if there are any wider necked guitars already available.

Ummm, I sound like an asshole, but your best bet is a new trem.. sounds like yours is worn out. Is it the bar, or the trem bar cavity that is duff? a new bar may help but if you’ve whammied\screwed the internal grooved, you’re up shit creek with no paddle. time for a new unit or a lot of tolerance.. the previous post is a good idea, but ive never tried it.. maybe detrimental to your guitar’s health..

I was told that the 85 and 60 models are the most natural sounding EMGs. Do they respond well with picking dynamics? The 81 is described as being really hot, with alot of presence, so I doubt that particular model ahs the dynamics and overtones I’m looking for. But what about the 85 and 60 models? I recently bought an old black Jackson strat with an alder body, maple strat headstock neck with a maple fretboard, floyd rose and one jackson J-90 pickup from my brother in law. It’s in pretty good shape, so I want to replace the super cruddy J-90 and make it my main guitar. I’ve been researching all kinds of pickups, trying to find the right one for this ax. I’m thinking, from the descriptions I’ve been reading on 85 and 60 model, that one of these might work nicely in this ax. But the picking dynamics issue has me wondering. My benchmark for a lead tone is what Adrian Smith got on "Somewhere In Time". I’ve yet to hear a lead tone in heavy metal that’s a dynamic as that. It’s so clear and crystally sounding. You can hear the plectrum hitting the strings, and the overtones just bloom with each note. When he hits those natural harmonics it makes my hair stand up. I realize that a big part of his tone is his outstanding phrasing. But if I could get close to that sound, I could die happy. So I guess the lead tone I’m looking for could be desribed as, icy, but warm, crystally, very clear with excellent picking dynamics and overtones. Will EMGs work for me?

March 27, 2003 at 5:26 pm #83977AnonymousGuest
I’ve found that by simply chipping at the paint with a sharpish flathead screwdriver until you get close to the wood grain is best. But scrap carefully and with the grain of the wood (i.e. from the back of the guitar to towards the neck and NOT up and down). Once the wood starts to get exposed sand the area with a fairly abrasive grade of sand paper and then use some low grade wire wool on the area to really smooth it out. Also, rub the wire wool onto the paint surrounding the very edge of the exposed area to get a less obvious look. Once you have the shape of the area exposed you are happy with use a pine/vintage coloured wood stainer on the area to darken it up and it’ll look great. I also suggest putting a few other very small nicks and knocks on the guitar around the bottom and edges (pretty small) using the same method. I hope this helps, Marc

: Everyone in my band is an admitted alcoholic and some have even been to rehab. So we called ourselves Step 13, after a the twelve steps where do you go?
Step 13, start drinking again.
Try something that’s cool within the band and easy to remember. Oh and don’t include anything the critics can use against you easily. Like for example, there’s a band called Zero Hour in my town. They are pretty bad and a reviewer used zero to describe the bands’ talent, their chances for stardom and the number of good songs they had. Don’t make it easy(LOL!!!) -

This is one of the hottest passive pickups you can get. I had one in a Fender Strat a long time ago (wish I had kept it too) wired to a switch that would split the coils. This pickup doesn’t clean up well and has a very cutting high end to it (that can be both good and bad depending on the person). You’re amp will have a lot of say about this as well. If you’re playing Metal, the X2N or Superdistortion is the way to go.
: i’m thinking of getting one for the bridge position of my ibanez rg550.

: I want to paint a scene (mural) on one of my acoustics. Can’t find on info, on rather or not this is a good idea or some precautions to take. I have
: seen many acoustic painted, though I don’t recall ever hearing one played. Please direct me to some info. My step-dad is a professional artist, who used to build movie sets and such –he knows materials, but I just want to find out and info possible, as he as never painted an acoustic guitar before.Kim, I think your best bet would be to use an airbush. Whatever paint you use you must make sure it is not as hot as what is already on your guitar. You’ll probably want to take a drop and try it somewhere where it will not be noticed to make certain there is no bad reaction between the two paints. Createx makes some very good waterbases acrylic paints. I have found a good deal of information from a company called Airbear that supplies all sorts of paints for all sorts of applications. Try to find the paint with the smallest pigment particles possible so the layers of colour will be as thin as possible. Good luck, Nick

I could afford a better guitar, but have fallen in love with my DM-2. How much would you want for it? Mine was about 10 years when I bought it 6 years ago, for $150.

I just purchased a 65′ Framus. It is similar to the second guitar on the right on the Framus fans 1 see link:(http://www.geocities.com/Broadway/Balcony/1638/framus1.htm) page except it has 3 pickups. I need info on the wiring. If you know anyone with any info on the guitar, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

: You need a Vox AC(15 or 30), a compressor, phaser and a single coil guitar(preferrably a brian may model guild). Then you’ll be close. He also uses an english coin(sixpence?) to pick with. Remember, he overdubbed many tracks with slight eq tweaks to get those juicy tones.

To get that May sound is easier than you think. The most important aspects are in my opinion the Kent Armstrong Tri-sonic pickups and the treble booster. Any other single coil guitar used with the treble booster will get close but not exact. Brian’s sound is a combination of things. The treble booster is key. If you wnat more info. email and I’ll give you more details. You can also check out Brianmayworld.com

Gerald Weber has a pretty good chapter in his book on why the original Marshall JTM 45 is the exact same circuit as the Fender 59 Bassman 5F6-A but sounds like a Marshall. 1)aluminum chassis, no problem!,although the original thickness and layout would save some guess work. 2)British transformers! Specs? What’s available now? From Who? What made them different from the Fender transformers? THANX !

what are the specs for Leo Fenders power trannies in the 5D8 and 5E8 low powered tweed twins and what currently available transformers will work there? Also, the output trannies, although MOJO does have that one listed. thanx!

To All:
I have a 25 year old accoustic steel string guitar, a Conrad. My question is that: the surface of the guitar behind the bridge is not, or no longer, perfectly flat (not in plane with the guitar top). It almost looks like the bridge is pulling the top of the guitar toward the nut, like maybe from the string tension over the years has separated the top from the inner supports. Any thoughts on what it is, or how much it will cost to repair? Thanks to All

I’ve noticed that re-issues burns marquee are going for $1200.00 what would you appraise your axe for mine’s a bit beat up but it has all the original hardware minus the pegs, sounds great though.

Travis, I have a similar question. I recently purchased a Cort Jim Trigg Chamber. (a hollow electric. I would like to paint a mural inside the comet shaped sound hole, on the bare wood. So can I use colored pencils or acrylics?: I think your step dad can use an acrylic or even an oil that will stick to the lacquer finish on your guitar. I’d keep the paint thin so that it will lay down and not affect the sound
