I own i Yamaha "EG 112" (Basicly just a cheap stratocaster)when ever i play (mainly thicker strings) the string seems to make a buzzing sound against the frets because it is rubbing. i have raised the bridge at the base and do not no what else to try? this is not a desperate problem it is only really notice able when it is played without amplication.

You might need to either use lighter gauge strings or get a new "NUT" put on that is taller than the current one. You could ask your local music shop about it.

My daughter wants a accoustic guitar. She’s 15, played piano for 5 years and Oboe for 5 years. Can someone help me choose a nice guitar that she won’t feel she needs to trade up anytime soon? She does not have large hands, if that makes a difference. Any help is greatly apreciated. K

Go on http://www.ebay.com and find a good deal on an Ovation guitar. One with electronics. They are small necked and sound great when amped. You can find an older one for under $300 with a case and she will have it 30 years from now. In fact I have 4 and love them all. Good luck…. : My daughter wants a accoustic guitar. Guest

: is an epiphone les paul standard a good buy? Epiphones are traditionally a ‘good buy’ any way you shake it. Epiphone was once a renowned COMPETITOR of Gibson, later absorbed into the parent company. I have an Epi Les Paul Custom Flame Top and it is a real nice piece. It looks gorgeous on stage and it plays as well as I need it to. If I were criticizing I would say the fret work is not as good as the same Gibson model. So to, the pick up switch is wimpier(easy to replace). I suspect that the pickups, too, are inferior, although I don’t have a Gibson to compare to. Thats my point. The same model Gibson STARTS at $2400. I got my Epiphone used, WITH the case for $450. If you cant afford the Gibson , get the Epiphone and dont look back. Make the few mods to the Epiphone required and smile all the way to the bank, meanwhile play happily along the way on your Epi LP.

: Okay i just got a bass, and i want to use it, but i have no bass amp…but i do have a Randall RG 75 guitar amp, can i use it on that? or will it blow up the house. Likely it will blow up the amp! Guitar amp SPEAKERS are designed to reproduce a different range of frequencies than those in a bass amp. The large speaker-cone throws(movement) required of bass frequencies are the killer. So, you can play a bass through any amp( think about it, amp is designed to electrically reproduce sound that would otherwise be created acoustically ). However I suggest you keep the output of your bass guitar turned down at the volume pot and kee the gain/volume of you amp turned down as well. If you wanna blow up the house, get a Hartke or SWR bass amp!

Any hints are welcome. : Stefan yeah price ha ha just kidding but price is a factor but to be sure allways check the ink stamp date on the end of the neck look on the back of the control pots they are dated and look inside the guitar and the back of the pickups. now this requires some dissasambly but a genuine seller that is not trying to pull a fast one should not mind beware of cheap prices and lastuse you senses, smell it you can smell the differancebetween a 40 year old guitar and one that is almost new bill

My 15-year-old son has asked for an electric guitar for Christmas, and I know nothing about how to select a guitar for him. He is teaching himself to play, and has a strong interest in learning more. Any suggestions on a used guitar in the $150 range, if that is possible? I dond’t want to spend a great deal in case this is a passing fad. However, if not, I would like to get him something with some quality to encourage his interest.

Depends on what style he is in to. Check out http://www.musicyo.com and look under the Kramer line of guitars. They make a pretty good quality guitar for the price. I have one that I bought about 4 years ago and it plays and sounds just as good as some American guitars priced much much higher.

Thanks, smeagol, for the tip. He has mentioned a stratocaster. My research indicates he must mean a Fender Squier stratocaster. He says a used one is fine. he mentioned an S-shape. What do you think about this one compared to the Kramer line? : Depends on what style he is in to. Check out http://www.musicyo.com and look under the Kramer line of guitars. I don’t have enough experience with Strats to know what an S shape is. Check out http://www.musiciansfriend.com They usually have a really good selection of Strats in any price range. The only word of caution is that you get what you pay for…it would probably be better to buy a higher end good used Strat than it would a cheepy that’s brand new.

I own a Mexi that i got for 270$ off ebay. I had to do some mods to it: Pickup replacement, wiring and tone circuit reconfigure. It is now sweet as sugar…and for a whole lot less than an American series. You can see the details of the "Phoenix Project Strat" in the Nov issue of ‘Allthingsstrat.com"

I do’nt personally own one but i know about 4 people who own mexican fenders. They sound really good, feel nice too. I have’nt played on a USA fender, but allot of people say that they are just as good as USA fenders and allot better value for money.

Has anyone ever seen a silvertone explorer shape guitar? I found one at a store going out of business for 130.00. I might grab it, (something to shred on). Just curious if anyone has ever seen or played one… i can’t find anything on the web about it.

For a good indication of the value of your guitar consult the classical guitar listing on Ebay. There are always a couple of Garcia’s posted for sale each week; however, do not fantasize about the guitar having a worth as posted on the Sherry/Brener web site. Those values are extremely overinflated.

: Hi. : I have a lot of tabs that say "palm mute" here and stuff like that. What is palm muting and how do I do it? : E-mail me at [email protected] In the simplest terms it means resting your palm on the stringx lightly, I tend to rest mine right over the bridge and that way the pick is in a good postion and I can mute more or less by rolling your hand forward or backward. Muting helps keep the strings from ringing on especially on electric when played loud. Hope this helps

I’m debating on getting a half-stack, just a head unit and a cab. It’s a crate glx model. My question is this, i only jam alone right now, would a combo amp be more suitable? Or could I get the combo amp and use it’s ext. input to set that on top of a cab? can you even do that? and if so, would you know if that sounds better or worse than getting a normal head unit?

I design guitar amps and during the research phase, it seemed that a combo would do fine. Since you like a half-stack, I suggest a closed back combo. We have one that has the same per speaker volume as a 4-12 and consequently has a very similar sound. You can pull the speaker plug and plug in a cabinet if you would like (4-ohm cabs are optimal). I am by no means an amp expert and dont claim to be one but i believe most situations you can run and combo amp to a cab. You may lose some wattage from the amp in running to the cab and you want to make sure the amp’s wattage is equal or less than that of the cabs other wise you can clip the speakers. Correct me if im people and hope htis helps

I just bought a 1989 one for $295, in pretty good shape from a music store. According to the Blue book, an excellent shape one is worth $500-600. (2003 Price guide)

The original Pinnacle series were introduced in the mid-90’s and were Ovation’s first attempt at a high quality imported guitar. They were made in Japan, had solid spruce tops & were generally pretty good guitars, the problem was their cost was about the same as a USA-made Balladeer. Current value if it’s in good shape with case about $250-350

I would recommend not buying an Esteban guitar. Not only is the guitar poorly made, but it doesn’t sound great either. The strings are way to high off the fingerboard and the body feels as though it’s made of plywood. If you’re looking for a guitar at a low price, I would say to check out a Takamine G240, or a Takamine EG240 if he’d want an acoustic with a pickup built in.

I have one and I love it. You may want to get the neck pickup changed for a little more warmth and even response across the full range. But it’s a great playing archtop that dosen’t have too much a feedback problem and cuts right through, even when I play with a big band.

I have owned a palmer plc series guitar for about five years and I have been told by better players than I, that it rocks. I have been learning to play on this guitar and it has been a good one. The only other info I can give you comes from a label on the back of the neck stating " made in korea " and another label above it PLO 5 which I assume is the model number. I have been unable to find any info myself. Good luck.

HELP PLEASE. First you need to know I know nothing of music or guitars. I have acquired an acoustic electric guitar that is marked at the top with a crest with two rampant lions and a crown above it and a banner saying world’s finest. Under that is another piece that has a small delta and then says Noble. Now please excuse my terminology in describing the guitar. The body is a little over 17 inches wide and 2 inches thiCk with two f holes. It is right handed and has 3 push buttons above the 6 strings and then two dials below the strings. The front and back are a light wood darkened slightly on the edges and a dark side piece. There seems to be backlite/plastic inlay around the f openings and around the sides where they meet the top and bottom, as well as along sides of the arms with the hand guard and top being mother of pearl type finish. I find no other markings. There is a very slight arch to the back and top but I do not believe it is an archback because the arch is so slight. My guess it is from the 50s or 60s. If some one could help me I would appreciate it. I do not plan on keeping it but have to find out what it before selling it. Thanks, Paul

Hello again…. sorry i hit post when i shouldn’t have… It could also be a guitar from Don Noble and Company… Don Noble were importers who brought guitars in from other countries like Italy. Here is a quote…. "Instruments previously produced in Italy circa 1950s to 1964. Production models were then built in Japan circa 1965 to 1969. Distributed by Don Noble and Company of Chicago, Illinois. Don E. Noble, accordionist and owner of Don Noble and Company (importers), began business importing Italian accordions. By 1950, Noble was also importing and distributing guitars (manufacturer unknown). In 1962 the company began distributing EKO and Oliviero Pigini guitars, and added Wandre instruments the following year. In the mid 1960s, the Noble trademark was owned by importer/distributor Strum´N Drum of Chicago. The Noble brand was then used on Japanese-built solid body electrics (made by Tombo) through the late 1960s. When the Valco/Kay holdings were auctioned off in 1969, Strum´N Drum bought the rights to the National trademark. Strum´N Drum began importing Japanese-built versions of popular American designs under the National logo, and discontinued the Noble trademark during the same time period" The best thing would be to take photos and email them to a few vintage guitar dealers who should be able to help you with an accurate value.

Here’s the idea…. I have an old good quality 150 watt Home Stereo…. I have a old guitar amp speaker that matches the ohm rating for that amp outputs…….. Can I run my guitar into the home stereo amp and then into the guitar amp speaker ? I assume I would need to pad and maybe compress the guitar signal before it goes into the amp. I’m looking for a clean clean sound. I already own the amp and the speaker so I could do this at no cost. Has anyone tried this ???? The ultimate goal is to have a rack mount box containing a PC running Amplitube, feeding a an amp and speaker with a midi pedal to control the software live. eventually I’d like to buy Cubase VST and make the whole system a great practice and stage setup. Just DI the output on stage and have all the toys that i drooled over back when Roland came out with their Guitar synth in addition to various amp sounds. 🙂 Spinner

Hi Ya! We seem to have similar interests in guitars, home stereos, and computer music.I have successfully used a system similar to the one you describe. My setup was: Strat guitar, Marshall Bluesbreaker, Zoom 503, Technics (or sometimes Pioneer amp), Technics stereo speakers. Neighbors would come over to the apartment to marvel at the sound of the system. It is a budget setup that produces gorgeous sounds ranging from a sparkling clean fender to huge rectified stuff, including heavy metal. I’m not saying to use my exact set, but that your concept will definitely work magnificently. You would be using the guitar and effects in the traditional preamplifier way. Then you’d use your home stereo as a clean power-amp, and then into your guitar speakers. Make sure that you don’t use your stereo amp to achieve distorted sounds, you’d be pushing it too hard. And make sure that your speakers are the correct impedence match for your amp. IF you are using only one speaker, ie. one channel on your stereo amp, then turn the other channel off so you don’t fry that channel of the amp. I highly recommend at least one amplifier emulator before the stereo amp, hence my Zoom box. Your stereo amp is not made to create nice guitar distortions, so let your effects boxes do all of that. Check out this site: http://www.computermusic.co.uk for lots of info on how to interface the amp and the computer with midi controller. To do your computer setup you might come out of the guitar with a Y-cable, feeding a signal into both the sound card and into your effects boxes. Then you could go from the computer to your stereo and from the effects chain to the stereo. You can visualize any number of combinations that will work wonders for you and your sound. It’s a great time for guitarists with all of the new software and hardware systems. SIMPLY TONS OF FUN!

You can’t go wrong with a Duncan Distortion. Carvin also has some really good ones. Dimarzio X2N is a pretty good one, too. You want high output but where you have to decide is the kind of tone. I have a Dimarzio Dropsonic that’s pretty good for metal and drop tuning, but it’s warmer and not as chunky as my other guitar with a Duncan Distortion. Go to their websites and check out the specs before you decide.

actually it isnt. swing low, sweet chariot is and has never been a church song or hymn or whatever they’re called. It actually originated from a rugby team called the old whitghiftians in the 70’s,a few of them used to go to a pub in london, that happened to be next to the bbc recording studios (the bbc is the main television company for the uk) and after rugby matches they used to sing anything, taking that weird cuban song and changing the lyrics to ‘i see your c*** in the mirror’ and the bbc heard this (sweet chariot) and decided to put it on the radio, and the songs fame spread, and everyone began to sing it at rugby games. and you know how i know that,my dad used to play for a rugby team called the old whitghiftians

It might sound really stupid but what is the point of a cab and how do they work? Do they make the sound louder? If so, why dont people just buy a 5 watt amp and plug it into a 100w cab? Im confused :s help me!!!!

      • #100535

        Guest

A cab is in reference to a speaker cabinet. A 100 watt cab can handle 100 watts. A 5 watt amp can’t produce the power to drive anything but a 5 watt speaker. You want to match the wattage on the amp and the cab for best results. There is some forgiveness, though. You can do ok with a 50 watt amp and a 100 watt cab but you’ll never drive the speakers the way they were intended to be played. But you never want to hook up a 100 watt amp to a 50 watt cabinet or you risk blowing the speakers. There’s also ohm loads…but that’s a story for a different time.

I owned a Crate CA60D for several years but sold it and bought a Genz-Benz Shenandoah about a year ago– absolutely no comparison, much fuller deeper sound, cleaner preamps, all-around happier with the G-B. Also tried SWR, nearly identical to G-B but more expensive and no effects… I play AG, EG, Keys and sing both in solo and band settings – totally happy with the G-B. Crate is good but lacks low end. : Hi all: I’m looking for a quility yet affordable amp for my new ovation elite(med depth body) and need it for home and playing out. : whats the difference between a gibson and an epiphone Like Fender and Squier, Epiphone is the cheaper versions of Gibson guitars. They won’t be made to exactly the same high standards as the more expensive models, but are essentially Gibson-endorsed versions of their guitars. And like Squier, there’s no reason an Epiphone won’t be as good as a Gibson.

I’ve had an Fender Bandmaster vinyl with Fender logo cover sitting on my Peavey Renown amp for about 25 years. It was old and worn when I put it on the amp. The tag says "Musical Instrument Cases" "Victoria Luggage Co". Inglewood California. About 30" wide, 18" high, 10" deep. Anyone know how old it is? – just wondering if it is worth saving or should I use it as a drop sheet when I paint my bathroom?

Hey, I’m a left handed guitaristfrom NC, and I’m looking for a new guitar at the moment. So, can anyone help me out?? The brand has to either be : – * ESP * IBANEZ * JACKSON * BC RICH * RAN But i’ll take any other offers into consideration, except Fender guitars. Oh yeah, on one from outside the U.S., unless you can ship it to me for next to nothing.

Very confusing unit. It is intimidating to look at, but how are they? Is the distortion any good. Can you get deep bottoms for heavy music…metallica like. In general, would it be better to have a few pedals or just get the whole processor? In your opinion.

It’s this website that’s confusing. I just submitted the original question instead of my reply. Anyway…I have owned the GT-6 for over a year and I’m still discovering amazing new features. I found it a bit confusing to figure out (I am no programing genius) but it is worth the time and effort! One of my favourite things is its ease of operation when playing live. You just stomp on a pedal and presto there is the customized effect you created. Stomp on the next pedal and you have a new sound. With four pedals in a row that makes for fast changes. Then stomp on the master pedal and poo,the four pedals are now a whole new bank of effect, and so on. Any body who isn’t thrilled with the quality of the effects (chorus, delays, distortions, etc. is too hard to please. Come on…what more could you ask for! One last thing, I love the tuner and expression pedal. And this thing is built like a tank.

I have one and I think the best feature is that if you get stuck using a bad amp when playing somewhere the amp modeling feature can really help it to sound like your playing out of something decent

well my friend has one, its great. We all play / listen to metallica and it works like wonders. He can get the effect of nearly every metallica song.. hehe.. its basically a question, do you want 200 pedals or 1? 🙂 Trust me its a good choice, he plays on a crate blue voodoo half stack with that and it sounds GREAT.

Hmmm. Good deal, i’m actually using a Crate as well, just a combo, not a stack. I think i just might have to grab one… any negatives you can think of? thanks for the input

I suppose that it appears pretty complicated lol, took my friend a while to master it but its worth it.. im not too sure on how it sounds on non tube amps though cuz he has a metalzone which imitates tube, but sounds like shit on his tube amp, and possibly the GT-6 might not sound as well on a non tube amp, although im not entirely sure on that..

Morning i owned until about last week a crate gx212. very very simmilar beastie. sound wasn’t too good to be honest, i’d go for the marshall. Ok this amp was seriously loud, however at practice/gig volume it started to flap and the sound didn’t cut it at all. Clean was ok but thankfully never had to gig it with the overdrive channel. Look at harmony central for some reviews The Marshall is going to have a much better sound and also keep a higher resale value. Cheers Chris

: hey i was just wondering if any one could help me and explain what the difference between an acoustic and an electric guitar is pls?? : An acoustic guitar has no electrics, and relies on a hole cut into the front of the guitar to produce an amplified sound. An electric guitar has pickups which ‘pickup'(!) the vibration of the strings as you play them, which (providing you have your guitar plugged into an electric amplifier) sends the signal to your amplifier and you produce sound that way! Hope this helps!!!!!!!!!

Make melodies and string them together. Then listen to your favorite solos to hear how they are structured.Listen for how they enter at the beginning of the solo and how it develops from there into some kind of build up.Listen for a beginning a middle and an end. and remember guitar.com sucks fuckin balls dude

If you find yourself struggling and losing interest (which can happen in the beginning) taking lessons can spur you on. I’m self taught. I picked up on most of the "tricks" of playing guitar by listening to something and trying to duplicate that sound (hammer, vibrato, pull offs etc) I also think tabs are a big help to begin with. Eventually i moved into playing by ear, but tabs are a good resource for payin a song if you can’t read music like me. It didnt tke me much time to learn because i learned fast but learning and being "good" are two diffrent things. Sorry ive rambled on way to long.

I did, it takes years of parctice to get ‘good’, but right off you should be able to play some stuff to keep you interested. : i want to teach myself how to play guitar, i mean loud distorted stuff! who in this forum has taught themselves how to play guitar, is it hard, and how long did it take to learn. : thanks, : shane

Tabs at first are helpful but eventually you want to be able to learn songs by ear. Tabs can help you learn all the little techniques like hammer ons, pull offs, slides, trills, tapping etc Learn the major scale and before long you’ll be able to pick songs up by ear chords are built using the major scale on each degree (or note) of the scale and then you take every other note in the scale to make 3 note chords,4 note chords, and up to 5,6 and 7 note chords. The 3 and 4 note chords are the most common.Three note chords are called triads and come in four main varieties(maj, min, diminished and augmented).4 note chords are called seventh chords(maj7,m7,and 7…a "7" by itself means it’s a "dominant 7th" chord).Rock and pop and metal and punk use mostly triads and power chords.Jazz uses mostly seventh chords.Country uses mostly major chords. guitar.com is a racist, sexist piece of shit of a site

heya , i play for about a year now , got me a Ibanez Rg 2570 Prestige . I listen to Metal mostly (everything except Nu ). I find learning guitar is pretty hard in a way because it indeed takes years and progress is very slow (unless you’re a natural talent probably). But i find it very interesting and i practice everyday. I have taken some lessons from a friend of mine who’s playing for 20 years now and i suggest you do thesame if possible , you really learn a lot more and you get a bigger understanding of music theory than when you have to figure everything out by yourself. i took about 15 lessons but now i’m back on my own , since i don’t have the time to go to the lessons. I got some friend who play in a band (Viggen =>80’s Thrash Metal =>http://users.pandora.be/paul.ulrix) and seeing how they play makes you want to run home ,pick-up your guitar and start practicing 🙂 My advice is : practice as much as you can and if it doesn’t work right away keep trying , eventually you’ll get the hang of it . It’s constantly pushing yourself further and further but in the end it’s well worth it (at least that’s the way i experience it)

Is yours an acoustic? I have a Hayashi ‘Gibson Dove’ style acoustic, nice guitar with spruce top, real mother of pearl fret board inlays and unusual Silky Oak (also known as Lacewood) back and sides. There is a Japanese guitar maker called Nabuaki Hayashi who currently produces avant garde shaped electrics under the name Atlansia and I wonder whether this is the same Hayashi? The guitar I have has the word "Mountain" inlaid in the headstock and "Mountain Folk, Made by Hayashi" stamped on the inside back brace. The serial number is 508033 and was bought in new in Adelaide, Australia in the late 70s. I’d like to find out a bit more info about these guitars too! Cheers Ian

I also have a Gibson acoustic ‘student model’ with the serial #49758 which I believe was made in 1962. Is that correct and is there a model number for that guitar? Thanks, Jim

alright check it out. i have a peavey stereo chorus 212 w/ the scorpion spkrs. my amp was messing up (kicking on and off and stuff) so i checked the fuses, the fuses were white, like they were getting ready to blow, so i got new ones (3 total) and put them in, as soon as i turned the power on *sizzle, sizzle* and fire shot up at me! after looking around, i noticed that what fried was this chip. i don’t know what it is called but that is where you guys come in. this chip is square. and it has a nut holding it on. there is a total of like 3 or 4 (sorry, i put it together and can’t remember how many. more than 2) what i want to know is, what are those? can i replace them? how much do they cost??? IC’s or regulators (if it has a screw), could be lot’s of things, the ‘chips’ will have a manafacturers name/symbol on it and a part #, with these things you can look it up/cross reference it for replacement, but chances are other parts of the circuit are fried too, if you aren’t used to doing this type of work get it to someone who is as you will probally not be able to fix it yourself so save the time, money and frustration trying. : alright check it out. i have a peavey stereo chorus 212 w/ the scorpion spkrs. my amp was messing up (kicking on and off and stuff) so i checked the fuses, the fuses were white, like they were getting ready to blow, so i got new ones (3 total) and put them in, as soon as i turned the power on *sizzle, sizzle* and fire shot up at me! after looking around, i noticed that what fried was this chip. i don’t know what it is called but that is where you guys come in. this chip is square. and it has a nut holding it on. there is a total of like 3 or 4 (sorry, i put it together and can’t remember how many. more than 2) what i want to know is, what are those? can i replace them? how much do they cost??? first of all tge description is quite vague (all chips are square) I doubt you can find a sole chip in the store. I suggest using the waranty and get your amp to the store (btw did you use fuses with thesame ampère? if not you can expect flames bursting out off it 🙂 ) ask them if they canrepair it . But if you ask me , i think that’s gonna cost you a fortune (in comparison to buying a new amp)

I’m aiming for a Metal sound with not to much Distortion , you know like 80’s Thrash Metal leads , that stuff (something like the solo’s on Electric Crown -Testament or the sound in the Passage to The Reaper-Alexi Laiho from Children of bodom video sound)Or a sound like Annihilator … I’ve got a Randall RG75 AMP, a Boss V-Wah and a DOD Death Metal Distortion pedal (maybe not the best choice ok but…:) ) Can someone help me on how to set the knobs? Hello everyone, I’m a first time poster to this forum and I hope someone can give me some advice. I used to play a lot of guitar in my youth (bass in a band but also some electric and steel acoustic), and I recently started again after a break of almost 20 years… and realized how much I’ve missed it. But during the years time has taken its toll on my old guitars and they need renovation/repairs and I’m wondering if it’s worth it, or if I might as well just get a new one. I have two guitars that needs repairs, one acoustic steel and one el. hollow. And here are the problem with them. (1) Acoustic steel Info on headstock: ZUZUKI THREE’S EST.1887 Label inside body: ZUZUKI GUITARS NO W-300 ZUZUKI VIOLIN CO. LTD. NAGOYA JAPAN This guitar is in pretty good shape but it needs new tuners, nut, bridge and string bolts. But it doesn’t seem to carry the tones as well as it used to. For example, when tuning it on the 5th fret, it doesn’t sound right when playing notes further down the neck (12 fret) and vice-versa. Can that be fixed? I have been quoted $250 by a music store to completely renovate this guitar. Is it worth it? (2) El. Hollow The only information on this one is ingraved on the body (above the 17-18 fret) where it says: HELIOS STANDARD JOHN G. HELLAND MUSIKKHANDEL SKIEN, NORWAY This guitar was given to me by my uncle who used it during his teenage days (must have been the sixties). It will need a lot of work to fix it up. New tuners, nut, frets, bridge and probably all the electronics. I don’t have quote of what it will cost to restore this guitar, but it has some sentimental value to me so I’d be willing to invest a few bucks in getting it back in shape. If someone could give me some advice as to whether it’s worth to repair these, I would I would greatly appreaciate any comments you might have. Best regards, Goggen

: Recently, I don’t know what to play on my guitar, I haven’t been able to think up anything either (I guess like a writers block). I taught myself, so I don’t have anyone to give me anything to work on or practice. Does anyone know what I can do to make my guitar playing a bit more exciting? i’ve got a Ibanez RG 570 (great guitar btw) The Whammy Bar on my Ibanez can just be inserted in the saddle (where the strings go in) . It’s possible you need to screw your’s in . Mine is just with some sort of click system. pushing the whammy bar up and down very fast gives you a vibrato like sound cause your applying more or less tension on the strings. You can do some pretty cool stuff with it it (like a dive bomb or so…)Anywaa look on Steve Vai’s Site (look it up via Yahoo , google…) ,he has got some tricks you can do with a whammy bar (or tremolo). Hope this was helpfull

: I was wondering if anyone nows any information about the company, the guitars they produce or any feedback from anyone who owns one. =================================================== Matt This company produces great guitars. The owners and builders use to be Gibson employees in the Kalamazoo, MI plant but when Gibson decided to shut down the plant in the early 80’s and move manufacturing to Nashville these people didn’t want to go. So they purchased the old plant and started this company. They make a sweet Les Paul style that is better made then the Gibson version. I just purchased one for $1500.00 and the comparable Gibson was $2300.00. Great deal for an awesum guitar. They also make a 335 copy that is better than the original and I will be buying one of these soon. Great company and great product. If you have the chance to buy one then seriously consider it as a great investment. Michael

I recently acquired a washburn millenium edition guitar but it is unlike any that I can find on the internet. It is a DM2000QCE and has quilted maple top and what appears to be rosewood sides, thought I could be wrong. It says on the inside "OF300" so I am guessing that means that there are only three hundred of them yet I could be wrong again. I anyone has any info about the guitar, please let me know. It will be greatly appreciated!!

I have a 1976 or 1977 Gibson Les Paul Custom, natural maple finish with a maple fingerboard. Original owner and still have warranty card (somewhere). The pickups have been replaced with Dimarzios but have the originals. The fingerboard was refinished during a refret and the bridge was replaced (do not have originals). I have been trying to determine it’s value but have not been able to find anything comparable on the internet. A guitar tech believes that it’s extremely rare and worth about 3-5K. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Throw the piece of junk in the garbage. Buy a real guitar like an Ibanez or any Jap brand …. where the employees don’t build your guitar after drinking all night. You will save alot of $$ too !

I have a 1976 LP Custom. Natural color, maple neck/fretboard. Pancake body. All original but it could use a refret in a year or two. The best I can tell you is Gibson made about 800 of these between 1975 and 1981. About half had black bodies and half had natural bodies. That comes to about 400 of them around. And that was back then. Many are junk by now. They are extremely rare, but you can find them ocasionally for about 2500. But due to the rarity of them, thier worth whatever you can get for them. I think it’s a sleeper. Hold on to it another few years. It’s a rare guitar to begin with. In fact, if more people know they exist the demand would be more. I play Jazz with mine. You can tell the year by the serial number. if it starts with 00 it’s a 76. Also, in 76 they had the top hat knobs (those black knobs with the silver inserts) and switched to speed knobs in 77. Those fat, clear/gold knobs.

Possibly, you could set up a sound you only use for tapping – the same as your normal solo sound, but with little or no sustain. This might reduce the unwanted string noise. Not sure how helpful this will be, but give it a go.

If you pick with your right hand, use your right palm to mute the strings you are not tapping. And as for getting the same amount of volume you would with regular picking, that just takes practice (hours) Good luck

if strings are ringing just mute them, it’s pretty common when using fair amounts of OD/gain, you just have to get used to it (muting strays). When you start out tapping it’ll be softer than regular picking, if it’s way softer try adjusting your string/pup height, best thing is just keep practicing, and practicing (sorry no magical advice here)…. and it’ll come : : when i play metal solos (or any solo with taps for that matter) i can’t seem to keep my other strings from ringing even though i’m sure i’m not touching them. also i cant get the same amount of volume out of the taps as normal picking. i’ve tried tapping with both my finger and my pick but i can’t seem to get it right. can someone help me? : Possibly, you could set up a sound you only use for tapping – the same as your normal solo sound, but with little or no sustain. I bought a Sigma DR-7 in 1978. I have been performing with it ever since. It is a great workhorse guitar with a good sound. Admittedly, it doesn’t have the tonal qualities of my Martin D-42, but then again what does! An added benefit of the Sigma is that I dont have to worry that much about someone walking off with my ole’ workhorse (unless they really know the Sigma secret). A good reliable guitar with good tonal qualities despite being beat upon, accidentally kicked, knocked off stands, bumped into microphones, showered with beer and whiskey, and traveling in the heat and cold throughout the country. Not many boxes would tolerate such abuse and still keep singing pretty — this Sigma has and continues to shine.

I hate to disagree after asking however,This is a studio les paul custom,I believe the binding makes it a custom, and this is the first year they made the studio and I have yet to see another one like it and I have been playing for 25 years.

A compressor can help with sustain, but it’s main function is to even out the signal levels from your guitar to your amp, so you (hopefully!) get a consistant sound level. That’s not to say you can’t turn your guitar up, it just evens out signals at the current volume.

: help im stuck, I can play loadsa stuff but i duno how to do harmonics or artificial harmonics, can anyone help? please Artificial harmonics were discussed by me and others in the posting "Artificial Harmonics DRIve Me NUtS! on 13th November 2003, so read there for a description of how to play them. Harmonics occur naturally on a guitar at the 5th, 7th, 12th, 17th, 19th and (if your guitar has one!) 24th frets. You sound them by touching the string – but not pressing down as you would normally, over the edge of the fret (where the metal separater is) as opposed to the inside of the fret. Play the note and let go of the string. You can do this on all 6 strings. Happy harmonics! (ps. Joe Satriani uses them very well – listen to his stuff)

i’ve just been loking into it. for what your talkin about, just stain it like you’re sayin, then give it a few good coats of polyester or polyurethane–the polyester gives it that real thick, shiny look though. but hey, this is just stuff i’ve read. i’m in your same boat, but i’m trying to paint it a color for my neice. i had th f-in thing perfect…it had a pink undercoat (for a little girl, remember?), then i sprayed blue over that, but from the sides…like a sunburst. then i sprayed chrome in the same way, but flecked the paint on the front and back. it had almost like a chemeleon look–appearing different colors from different angles. BUT THE F_IN S#*T PEELED OFF!!! i was supposed to use laquer and not enamel…at least that’s what it seems like now. anyways, good luck

i suggest that you start out with some ernie ball "slinkies". tell the dude at your local music store you want a pack of "Ernie ball slinky 10’s" take them home and intall them on your hondo(great guitars, hondo was my first), according to the color code on the bottoms of the strings. i suggest the slinkies becuase the will be easy on your fingers and they are very forgiving strings. not to mention that they sound awesome. good luck!

I recently purchased a GI-20 and use it with Cubase VST 5.1 on a P4 (pc) workstation’. It’s an IBM Intellistation I found used in a local store. I added my Layla20 card (succeeded by 2 newer versions from Echo, but the L20 works well). I find the GI20’s tracking to be very good – minimal or no latency on most vsti patches after upgrading to this pc from an even older p3. The Intellistation is 1.6 ghz processor with ram max’d at 1.5 gig (and this is a 3-year old pc… you can do much better if you want to spend the money.). I mounted the Roland GK2-H midi pickup on ’77 strat (heavy body, no trem)and it tracks and sustains well. Decay and releass of many synth pads can be bit too abrubt but I guess that is the nature of using a vibrating string as a trigger and not a depressed keyboard key. Recording midi seems easy. I did have problems at first with record/monitoring, but upgrading to the latest Echo Layla driver (with improved ASIO)fixed the problem. I can’t really compare to the GR-33 since I haven’t used one, but my sense from what I’ve heard is the new stuff is faster. I’ve mostly been exploring vsti synth sounds and havent yet changed parameters on the GI-20. That will come. B

Hello, I hope someone can help me determine what type of guitar I have. My granddad gave me this guitar and I’m pretty sure it’s not a name brand. It has a red cherry finish with a sunburst on the top part of the dreadnought. The pickguard has designs on it of a hummingbird near some flowers, butterflies, and other pretty flowers etched in the pick guard. The sticker on the back of the headstock says made in Korea. There is no number or name anywhere on or inside the guitar. Does anyone have a clue what it might be? Thanks for your help.

Morning Drew, Stagg guitars are budget instruments from china (i think). their website is http://www.staggmusic.com/ The new les pauls which they produce are rather nice, however ones built around a year ago had nasty pickups on them. The build quality on these guitars is excellent for the money and they look the business too. The only quarm is with the name, however if you can get past that go for it. As with many budget brands alot of the reviews we read are from troubbled teens obsessed with brand names such as fender and gibson. However as an owner of a real Les Paul and a PRS it often suprises people when i gig with either my stagg PRS copy or the Stagg Les Paul. Ok they’re not in the same league as the real deal, but they’re as good as epiphone’s etc at half the cost. To give you an idea the Stagg Les Paul has an RRP of £200 (uk sterling). Cheers Chris

You can not use just any old converter for 220VAC operation, particularly the ones for heaters. You need a transformer or inverter that produces the 110 from 220… EKP

Yes, I believe the only difference is the quilted maple top and color options. The QM finish is very nice looking though. There is about $70 difference here in the U.S. too.

Stroh made some guitars, but they are exremely rare. They were intended to be played as Lap-steels, I don’t think there were any made to be played upright but I could be wrong. I’ve seen & sold several Stroh-Viol instruments, but they were all Violin-family. The 1-string jap-fiddle is the most common. The violins sound pretty horrible, I’d expect the guitars would also.

: on my distortion pedal when i turn my pedal up over 6 on the distortion level knob i get a muffled heavy sound any ideas how to get a clearer heavier sound..(its a ibenez fat cat pedal) You could try turning the treble up, and the bass down on your amp – that would give you a clearer sound. Also, depending on where your volume is set to on your amp and guitar, that could muffle the sound (having your guitar colume down can muffle, having your amp volume too high can distort and muffle the sound – but having your amp volume to low can muffle as well!!!!!!) In conclusion(!), play with you eq settings on your amp and guitar – if that doesn’t work, burn the pedal and get a new one!

If you don’t have a three-wire power cord, you might look into one. If you do, the recepticle may not be grounded properly. They make these OK lights for about $8 and they are at the harware store. Just plug it in and if it reads OK then it is OK otherwise, something is wrong… EKP

You can reduce amp buzz generally by ensuring that you only have 1 earth wire on your setup. For instance, you may have a multi-plug extension. Leave the earth wire in that (so it’s act as earth for all your equipment), and disconnect (and make safe) the earth wires from your amp, effects processor etc. Use a surge protector plug as well to prevent any electrical ‘accidents’!

Depends on the type of tone you’re after. Warm Les Paul?…Bright Fender…etc. Let me know and I can give recommendations after that. Also, go to http://www.warmoth.com and browse around. They have some good descriptions of woods and their tonal properties. http://www.lumberlady.com sells pretty good wood for making electric guitar bodies. I recommend you go for something different than the norm…like I built one with mesquite on top of mahagony with a maple neck. And it sounds great and unlike any guitar you can commercially buy, to me that makes it worth alot more.

Thanks a lot. : Depends on the type of tone you’re after.

OK, I just got a ‘bird (ordered it, which I had to do where I live) and the neck isn’t straight, the action’s way too high. Otherwise everything appears to be perfect. The problems will of course be fixed, but at the same time I’d like to know what the best strings might be to put on this model: strumming, fingerpicking; own stuff, cool country, blues. Thanks!

We have a Takamine Electric Guitar and I would like some history on it. I know that Takamine does not make the Electric Guitar anymore and I want to know when that last made just an electric guitar and why they stopped making them. I heard some stories on it and I just want to find out if the story I heard was correct.

oopssssssss posted too fast without typing. i actually have the same guitar and bought it about 11 years ago. takamine doesn’t give out much information apart from the fact it’s quite unique, they only made electric guitars in 1984-85 they were all mahogany set neck with overwound pickups. it’s a pretty unique guitar and i’m quite sure that i’m never gonna sell it. this is all i know about this guitar. : We have a Takamine Electric Guitar and I would like some history on it. Help! Anyone! I’ve got an early seventies era Les Paul with gold hardware. New Machine heads by Gibson, made by Grover don’t fit in the holes. The holes in the new Gibson bridge are too wide for the posts, so the bridge tends to move a little. Does anyone know where to get replacement Gibson parts that will work? Thanks in advance.

A guitar produces sound by echo. When a string is plucked (or picked) it produces a very tiny sound a naked human ear cannot hear. But when that sound wave echos inside the Guitar it circulates and then comes out the hole it went into, but much, much louder. On an Electric Guitar the strings vibrate and the amplifier (amp) prouduces the sound, also by echo.I know your thinking "Blah,Blah,Blah.Oh why doesn’t she just shutup?!".But This could be interesting. If you have any questions email me at [email protected]. Bye Now, Molly Jackson

Sorry, you’re wrong. The guitar does not work by "echo" Put simply any sound isproduced by vibration. This vibration produces changes in atmospheric pressure which we perceive as sound. When a guitar string is plucked it’s energy is transferred via the bridge to the top, the top serves the purpose of increasing the strings energy, as the top vibrates it causes sound pressure waves. The timbre and volume of the instrument are further conditioned by the materials used in it’s construction, the volume of air enclosed by the body & the size of the soundhole (or holes)

Around 1970 I was given a guitar by my grandfather and never learned to play. I have the guitar and it is mint condition but it does not have a brand name on it. I am trying to find out if it is worth anything. The model number is 319.12401001. It was made in the USA. It has the s shapped slots in the front and not the round hole like most guitars. There is a round silver tab at the top of the guitar with a symbol of what looks like the nuclear symbol.

What you have is an archtop f-hole "SR" guitar that came from the Sears, Roebuck and Co. catalog, and was made by the Harmony Co. in Chicago, IL, probably sometime during the 1960’s. If you look closely at the ‘Sputnik’ logo you can make out the initials SR. Sears used this logo on many items during the space-age sixties, I even have a golf club with the same logo. The model number could be looked up in a Sears catalog of that era. The "SR" line was a slightly lower grade than the "Silvertone" line, and as such it does not have a great deal of value, but if the action and neck angle are OK (always a hit-or-miss proposition on any Harmony product), then it should be a nice guitar to play or learn on. : What is the best equipment-amps and processors/pedals- to use with a Fender Texas Fat Strat for playing the blues? I like a lot of sustain and harmonics like Roy Buchannon. Well during my "Roy Phase" in the early 70’s I used a Stock 1970 Fender Tele and Fender Bassman 50 Head. I Pre-amped the guitar just a little with an LPB-1. Sounds just like him. Of course Roy’s technique, ability, experience and creativity had a lot to do with his sound. But we can’t put that in a box and sell it. Play with a lot of passion and dedication and chances are you’ll go far. Von Ehman

There is a ton of shit out there, crazy! Unless your playing big venues, ya don’t need high wattage earbleeding amps. 30 watts can surfice most. I play a Fender Blues Jr and it sings at 9. What ya save on a big $$ amp, ya can make up with a middle-road/dependable amp and quality effects. Check out Pedalgeek.com. Ya get what ya pay for….unfortunetly a many of the more custom/handmade effects aren’t at your local music store, maybe at a Guitar Center or someplace like that. : , instead of equipment try some of these: : : -a lying cheating lowdown woman : : -a little time in the pen : : -a bout with acholism and or drug addiction : : that should get ya started : : Right on JC, as for equipment: possibly try some Dunlop bass frets for sustain . I have a 1959 Silvertone guitar and I am looking to find out how much it is worth .Can you help? Larry Fosdick

Hi, I was thinking about bidding on a Kohno I just saw on Ebay. Does anyone know what the approximate value of a 1977 Model 15 would be? Is anyone here familiar with this model? I’ve played guitar for quite a few years… but, this is my first experience with classical. Would this be a good choice?

Can anyone shed some light on this guitar? The sound of this guitar is absolutely fantastic, very solid and expressive. It sounds best when high tension strings are used. Any information concerning this guitar would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Shiu

How does one have a guitar appraised? Mine is not in good condition, has a gold block logo, number 15131 on the back of the tuning head, and has 2 cracks in the back. I have had this guitar 30 years and have no idea where it was before that. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you so much.

My Epiphone Les Paul pickup switch snapped off the other day. Can someone tell me how I can fix this myself rather than going to get it done by someone else? Its only the knob on the switch, I can still flick it up and done with the piece that’s left.

if it was just the plastic tip you can buy new ones at most music stores, can you see screw threads ? if so get another tip, if it’s broken then just get a new switch, they are cheap and easy to swap out : My Epiphone Les Paul pickup switch snapped off the other day. The actual metal "handle" (as I’ll call it) with the plastic top is what broke off.

This is kind of a crude, but I think, a quick and virtually free solution. I did it to a Samick LP copy. Find a small very thin nail or brad. Clip it with some cutters to a length of 1/4 inch or so. See if it fits inside the hole left by the old stem. If so, with a toothpick, very carefully, apply a drop of super glue right into the hole. Immediately put the new stem in with the switch in the middle position. Treat it like a surgery, that is, protect the guitar surface with a cloth. I happened to have an old single switch head that I had previously glued to the new stem. Hey, it seems to work, I know the purists are ripping me, but switches are cheap, so what the heck. Good luck. Let me know how it turns out.

Haven’t tried Axtender but, if your Les Paul has a nitro cellulose finish you should be careful of any product that is made of static charged vinyl. Migrating plasticizers can cause your finish to cloud if left on to long…the stuff is OK on poly finishes. : I been lookin for a finish protector for my LP. It’s probably the switch. When you mess with the switch can you get a full signal? If not then you’ll probably need to find a wiring diagram and check all of your solder joints.

I’ll second the switch, epi switches are cheap and always wear out quick, change it out (because you will have to do it eventually anyways) and if that dosen’t fix it then just buzz it out. : It’s probably the switch. first loosen the strings, then with a pair of pliers or similar pull them out, they are not screwed in,they may be a bit stiff if they have been in for a long while.when replacing put string in hole first then push ball thing back.;-)

I would. You’ll have a better roll off when you turn the volume knob. While you’re in there you might also want to consider a treble bleed to retain your highs when you turn down the volume.

It could be alot of things. You cable, the grounding or shielding in the guitar. Bad solder joints somewhere in between. Try standing off to the side of the amp and see if that helps cut it down. On my amps I get horrible humming depending on where I stand or the angle of the guitar in relationship to the amp and cabinet.

Also could be low end effects, If no effects in loop, then it is your guitar or cables. If your playing out in a bar lok for flourescent lights in the same socket or near your amp. Makes mine hum like a bitch sometimes.

I really want to learn how to play the acoustic guitar, yet I have no experience with reading music or anything else having to do with guitars for that matter. If anyone has any suggestions on how to start or a good book that will help me, please leave something on here, or e-mail me at [email protected]

Peavey is a good make of amp. Aria is a good make of guitar. I personally would go for something like a squire telecaster to start with. Check out secondhand guitars and amps – they’re usually the best buys. A telecaster has a nice feel to it, the frets are neither too close together nor too far apart, and is an easy guitar to play. I find instructional video’s are made by pompous idiots with their heads too far up their own asses – i’ve yet to see one that is actually instructional. Get yourself some ‘3 chord songbooks’ and take a few lessons if you can – just to get into the basic chords, and to make you persevere past mastering your first barre chord – after that it becomes easier! If you get an electric guitar, you may find your fingers bleed from the strings (the thinest one’s are like cheesewire!). Vinegar helps (your fingers, not the strings!) – or urine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Right there are lot of good strings, firs you have to know whatkind of bridge you have it for the tension of the strings and the specific kind of string for example you cant put steel strings to a nylon guitar its sure that the bridge dont suport the tension of the steel ones so thats the first point the second is the large of your freetboard its better to put on string of the perfect large this is for not have to cut the string and have any risk irregularity in the sound, there we have youre fingers and the confortability of your hands try to look for a string that fits good to you not too hard and too thin. well for last ive used Daddario string in my guitars for electric and acoustics this are a grat company that manofacture only strings and are masters in that every string that the do are great, look for some earny ball its difficult to find one of those but are great too….

Is yours with black headstock and rosewood fingerboard? A floating type Fender bridge? It is cool, but the one I got is rough and I am going to begin work on it and am trying to find some original fender brochure type pictures to see how it was originaly shipped.

Any suggestions and/or exercises for rehab would be appreciated. I did have neck surgery to correct the problem but my playing has not returned to normal before the symptoms appeared. Here’s my reply-(should not do this when busy on a Monday!) Time will tell, right now an 83-84 Squire Tele if stock will go for about $300-350, not a collector’s item price, but there are only so many of them of course. We’ll see. BTW, you wouldn’t happen to know if the stock pup selecter was the "barrel" or "top hat" style?

I wear hearing aids. When the rest of the orchestra is playing I must turn the aids down (because the horns and drums just go right through me). As a result, I cannot hear my amp properly. Is there some kind of adjustable earphones I could wear over top of my aids. Would the earphones be plugged into the pre-amp? I am a jazz musician.

question, i have no problem with alternate pciking on a single string, and i’ve always thought i alternately picked every note when i practiced scales. but after slowing down my motions after reading a book on lead, i noticed that sometimes when picking to the next string i will pick in the same direction. it seems this would be ok and actually save time/effort and maximize speed but the book statesthat even when crossing strings you should still alternately pick. I’m wondering why, and if everyone agrees, mostly because it would be such a pain in the ass to go back and unlearn my scales and relearn the real alternate picking.

one more thing, for the most part it is more than 90% alternate, its just that i cheat sometimes on the way back down from scales, e.g going from the third string with an upstroke, and starting on the 4th string with an upstroke. it just seems easier when i’m going pretty fast. how big of a problem is this???? thanks

not a problem at all, the exercises probally just stress it while changing strings for consistiency but in real playing sometimes you need multiple down/upstrokes or strict alternate picking so it all depends on what you are playing and after awhile your hand just does the right thing without much thinking, maybe get used to scales with strict alternate picking just for the hell of it, learning/adapting is what it’s all about. : one more thing, : for the most part it is more than 90% alternate, its just that i cheat sometimes on the way back down from scales, e.g going from the third string with an upstroke, and starting on the 4th string with an upstroke. it just seems easier when i’m going pretty fast. how big of a problem is this???? thanks

Usually, alternate picking is required when performing fast 3 or 6-note-per-string runs and the like, but if it feels natural to do wha you do, it’s probably not worth changing your style.

Its basicly stripped down ES-333 with a Gibson Dirty Fingers pickup at the bridge no neck pickup (i think their isnt one but there is some kind of plate there in its place). It still only have one knob, a volume. The one i saw was brown color w/ creme strip across the center. Its very nice….check it out at http://www.gibson.com/products/gibson/classic/tomdelonge.html

Personally, I like it for the simplicity. One pickup, one knob, very little wiring. If you play the guitar, and like it, then buy it. Don’t just get it because of the artist who used it. Tom is playing a signature model Gibson ES-333, which I understand will be released in the spring as the ES-333TD model.

I own this guitar (the signature strat) and as much as I enjoy playing it, it’s really a one dimensional guitar. When I purchased it, I was into playing mostly punk stuff, which sounds great on this strat. But if you play a wide range of music, like I do now, I’d rather have invested in a standard strat (so I could have 3 different pickups with 3 different sounds). Good luck in your search

Hi! I have a Gibson ES-335 on which someone erased the original numbers so I can’t find out the exact manufacturing year. In a guitarshop they said it was probably late 60’s, early 70’s. Now i tried to look at the humbuckers to find out more but the only thing that i saw was the numbers 2,737,842. Afters some research on Internet I know they are Gibson PAF’s but on some sites they say there is a year inscription too, but I can’t find any. Were there any years they made them without yearstamping?

I have only seen one other Cortez guitar since then. This guitar gets better with age, and like someone else said…would not trade it for anything. This guitar looks just like a Gibson, and I am very sure that the Cortez was the low end Gibson model, sort of like a Fender Squire. But I have heard recently, that these guitars, although made in Japan are equal to if not better then the Gibson’s…but maybe I am a bit bias. I have played many Gibson acoustic and would put my Cortez up against any of them…..Hope this answers your question. I have had a pickup put in, and I have had to have some frets replaced, and I put new grover tuners on this baby….but it is a beauty…..

: Are Acoustical cortez guitars any good? Anyone? I’d say so. I got one in 1980 when I went off to school. It has a full, rich tone, it’s easy to play even if it is big, and it’s the drop-dead favorite of all my guitars. Mokey (its name) has been through the wars with me and has stood up to it beautifully. It has NEVER broken or anything. All of its parts are original–no replacements. If the Cortez is still as good as mine, grab it! Sheila

How much tone do I lose with light vs. medium strings on my acoustic. My fingers are killing me and my playing isn’t clean enough for recording. Tony

Hello Tony, Acoustic guitars can be very sensitive to the ‘weight’ of the strings you use. Firstly, do not use strings heavier than the guitar was designed for or you’ll warp the neck and the guitar will become useless. If you’re not sure then tell your local shop what the model and make is next time you go to buy strings. Other than that the weight you chose is a matter of taste so try a couple of alternatives and see what the best combination of feel and tone is for you. Remember, you listen to your playing more than anyone else so your set-up should be the way you like it. Cheers, Jason. : How much tone do I lose with light vs. medium strings : on my acoustic. i had this dilema for years, until i found out that my idol – jimmy page – goes as light as possible. i tried this, using extremely light strings on my acoustic and i have never looked back since!

Use the strings that are most comfortable for you, experiment with different strings and you will find a set that gives you the ‘tone’ you seek, heavier strings will beef up the tone some but if you aren’t playing clean then all the ‘tone’ in the world isn’t gonna make you sound good, also after awhile whith lighter strings as your hands get stronger work your way up to heavier strings incrementally (if it turns out that is the only way to get the tone you are seeking).

There is no way you could be disapointed with a Fender balckface amp. It’s just too much quality. Don’t by a Peavey, it’s reliable but you cant compare. Can’t tell about Berhinger, but I prefer tube amps. For high overdrive go for Mesa or Marshal. There are others very good amps but expensive like Hughes & Kettener, Vox, Soldano, Bad Cat, etc. ______________ : i have been playing guitar for a couple of months and i am intrested in buying an electric guitar and amp. If you’re looking for a highly overdriven, rock and roll type tone, I wouldn’t look at a Fender. They’re better suited for high volume, low gain stuff…..think modern blues. In that price range, I’d actually look for a Behringer amp, they make one for about $140-150 that has a great overdrive channel and amp modeling. Not sure of the model number. You could also look at Peavey, their lower-end stuff is pretty good. And don’t rule out Marshall, either.

Had to be shipped to NYC for repair (at my expense) after just 4 months of practice use. Their customer service in the USA is not very good. Fenders, Peavey’s & Marshalls are all good choices. If you go solid state, get at least 50 watts. If you go with a tube amp, get at least 25 watt (with the exception of the Fender Blues Junior which is only 15 watts). Also get reverb.

: I would like to begin to play an electric guitar, except I have no idea where to start! Would an acoustic or bass be better, and what is the difference? I WOULD START ON AN ELECTRIC, THEY ARE MUCH EASIER TO PLAY, YOUR FINGER WON’T HURT AS MUCH AND YOU ARE MORE LIKELY TO STICK WITH IT. I WOULD START WITH A FENDER SQUIRE, THEY HAVE GOOD SOUND AND GOOD VALUE FOR THE PRICE. YOU CAN ALWAYS UPGRADE ON YOUR GUITAR AFTER YOU ARE SURE YOU ARE GOING TO STICK WITH IT. GOOD LUCK

First of all know what instrument you like better. If you’re going to play guitar, I suggest first learn in with an acoustic, then get the electric. Anyway, it is easier and better to learn bass after you know guitar, than the other way around. ____________ : I would like to begin to play an electric guitar, except I have no idea where to start! I have one of these too. They were a production model for several years, I believe ending with 1978. Mine is exactly as you describe. There used to be a few web sites talking about this model. Don’t confuse it (as many do) with a Les Paul Pro Deluxe, which I think was a later model. It was not one of six produced in 1978. I don’t know how many were produced, but they were not particularly rare or valuable. I’ve seen them for about $900-1,200 depending on condition. : like does it have a model # and serial # : : : i need info on a 1978 Les Paul Pro. Worth and how rare it might be.
