This cherry apple red guitar comes with two semour duncan high output humbuckers, a rosewood neck, and one of the best hard tails that fender makes. It retails for 1400 dollars and I’d love to keep it, but i need the money. Make me an offer. its in mint condition. [email protected]

A short while ago I somehow wound up with a 69 Fender Villager. The person I got it from strongly believed that it belonged to "some one special". I was wondering how I could find the previous owners or even the estimated value of the guitar. The serial number is 254570 and on the inside it also has the numbers 9 38 which I do not know what means. Can some one tell me how to find my guitars history?

I think it is too old to use the serial number to trace it to the original owner; that wasn’t really done back in ’69. Are you interested in selling it? I’ve been looking for an original Fender 12-string neck for a project I’m working on.

my boyfriend just told me about this guitar earlier this night. he used to own a ventura until his dad pawned it. he told me that the guy who designed the ventura was the same guy that designed the les paul and he introduced that design to companies and they said it wouldn’t fly. so hd decided to design a different guitar, the ventura. however, the designers focus changed after two years when the les paul cought on and he got a contract to design it. that is what i know from my boyfriend, and he learned this from am older friend of his he knew that lived and worked in a music place in st.louis who was a huge music buff. i don’t know if that helps you, but i was wondering where you bought the guitar because i would really like to buy one for my boyfriend since he lost it so long ago, and he loved that guitar almost as much as he loves me… hah! please email me back. thanks~ Kim

I have a Suzuki acoustic (Model W120 VSC) which I bought here in the UK around 1985 for £180 ($300?). I have played some much more expensive guitars in shops etc over the years, but have never found one so responsive as mine. Yet, I’ve never seen another one. Does anybody else have one ? It’s a lovely nut brown with a cut away. The headstock is similar to the Ovation shape, and it (and the internal label) refers to the Suzuki Violin Company.

I have a Suzuki as well. Mine’s a ’73, I think I’m winning on age over all of yours. Muahahawhaw, I don’t know the model type… where do I find that? On the inside? Who cares, but it has a dove and roses on the pick guard. It’s hot! It has a deep rich sound and I LOVE it to death bro!!! I think all Suzuki owners love ’em, am I right? Ok I’m outtie Yohan ><>

Hey man, i just came back from the UK and while i was there i picked up a W-120.VSC just like you describe. Got in a cash converters in a place called Stevenage in Herts’. I’ve owned and gigged with the best acoustics guitars made but little number is a real knockout. It kinda has a sunburst finish. Two peice rosewood arched back and rosewood sides. The headstock says Suzuki Est.1887 with Nagoya underneath. I haven’t replaced the factory machine heads yet which are very crappy. Fantastic sound and neck. What can i say, it was one of those guitars that somehow fell together beautifully…and all 110 quid…they wanted a hundred and 125 cheers

Funnily enough I checked my Suzuki acoustic that i havent played in years. Its a W-120 ECR S that I paid s/hand $250.00 Aus in the mid 1980’s. Its a cutaway with vol/eq. Redish finish, still in tune and no warping on the neck. Too nice to sell.Sounds great through PA

Hi Brian, I’ve got exactly the same guitar (model no. colour etc.). I actually bought it from a catalogue (Kays or Freemans or something) back in ’82, nonetheless it’s a great guitar and has aged remarkably well. I also own and gig with a Martin and a Taylor and the Suzuki holds it’s own with both of them. I wouldn’t part with it. Rgds, john.

I don’t have a Guild/Madeira P712, but I have a P812. It has a jumbo body, spruce top, ‘flamed’ maple sides and back. Large block inlays on the fretboard. It has a really big sound, without even putting much into the picking. As soon as I find out info on either guitar, I’ll let you know………GERROD KROLL

Being slightyly unknowledge about guitar sounds and effects, could anyone give me a clue of where to look in order to satisfy my curiosity. At present I have a Epiphone SG and am considering trading it in for a guitar that weighs less and has a heavier sound. ????

      • #81818

        Guest

If it is a decent Epiphone SG then it will be made from mahahony. Mahagony is a good wood for heavy. If it’s a cheep Epiphone then trade it in. Here’s where I’d start. Invest in some good pickups. Epiphone pickups are weak. For the bridge I’d put in a duncan invader, or dimarzio x2n…possibly just a duncan distortion but the other two have much more output. In the neck you’ll have to do a little research to see what pairs up with the high output, maybe a duncan custom. Dimarzio and Seymour Duncan have resources on their web pages to compare output and tone of all of their pickups. The next thing I would do is put on heavier strings…the more mass the strings have the more energy they transfer through the pickups. I would also consider replacing the factory plastic nut with bone. And change out all of the pots and use good solder and wire. In any case, unless you trade it in and buy a really high end guitar you’ll still probably end up doing all these modifications anyway if you want a good "heavy". Hope this helps. Let me know if you need anymore help.

yeah.epiphones dont have very much of a metal tone maby a schecter or an ibanez or bc rich those are good metal and shredder guitars or get different pickups.also digitech metal masters or any of the rp series have some good metal sounds and there pretty cheep.rock on:)

of course…if you just want heavy sound, without any trouble getting it, just buy a metal pedal. Boss MT2 is a good heavy metal pedal. Also Danelectro Black Coffey… good luck

It plays really nice and the B is nice and easy to reach. The neck is slim and it is nice and easy to slide from positions. I would recomend Schector to anyone

i ran into a brick wall,my computer wolnt go to the seymour duncan website so the only diagram i have is the one that came with the pickup and it is obscure.i want standered humbucker operation,no fancy stuff, for that diagram it shows the red and green being soldered together the black wire going to the volume then through a circle that says .02 and i dont know what that is and then to the tone controll.it shows the green wire grounded but after i split all the wires from the thick black one that comes out of the pickup i noticed that there is another wire that doesent have plastic around it..what do i do with that one,it isint showed on the diagram i have.

        Guest

I made a mistake…it’s the red and white wires that get soldered together. If your guitar sounds weak and lacks bass when you put the selecter in the middle (both pickups working) then you will have to reverse the black and green wires. Let me know if you need anything more.

      • #81807
        Anonymous
        Guest

I’ll try to explain, but it’s kind of hard w/o pictures. Basically solder the red and green together and wrap the joint with electric tape. You don’t have to worry about these anymore. Take the green wire and the bare wire (that’s a ground wire) and solder them to the back of the volume pot…becareful about not over heating the pot or it’ll get screwed up. When you look at your volume pot there will be three connetors. One should be connected to ground (or the back of the volume pot. Depending on your guitar the middle one will either go to the switch or to the output jack. The last one is the one you want to solder the black one to. You should also have a wire going from this same connector to the tone pot. The .02 is refering to a mini-capacitor with the value of .02 microfarads. If you already have a capacitor on your tone pot then don’t worry about it. The capacitor looks like a little ceramic disk with two wire comming out of it. Take a look and see if this makes sense. If not, then leave your e-mail and I’ll send you a diagram and try to help you through it.

how do you do it the stock ones have only two wires so where to the other 3 wires from the duncan go???

      • #81694
        Anonymous
        Guest

I would start by going to Seymourduncan.com Under "support" they have all kinds of wiring diagrams and they’re pretty easy to follow. The other wires will allow you to run both coils in series, parallel, single coil, or out of phase. If you don’t understand what these are then just stick to connecting them in series. If you want to get tricky there are some neat things you can do and most of the hot rod modifications will be in duncan’s web page. Do you have a soldering iron and rosin core solder? If not then you’ll need some. It’s pretty easy. Let me know if you get stuck and I can help you out. I can’t even add up the number of guitars I’ve wired over the years.

the floyd rose i have needs the intone nation set i have taken it servel places and it still gets out ofe tune like cheep tremlo how do i fix this and set the intone nation

      • #81700

        Guest

To set the intonation, there are some screws retaining the saddles in place on the bridge. You have to loosen tention on the particular string you wish to set the intonation, loosen the screw and move the saddle forwards and backwards, then reset the screw, tighten the string, tune it, check intonation, and repeat. It’s a pain. Also, check for wear on your locking nut, if it’s letting the strings slip that could be part of the problem. Floyds in general are a pain. Let me know if you need anymore help.

like smeagol said, floyds are a huge pain especially if they are a licensed copy and not a real one. in this case, i doubt the root of your problem comes from intonation (although be sure to check it once you’ve done a proper setup). i suggest you have a professional setup done to be sure it is done correctly, but if you dont have the patience or the money (setups can cost anywhere from 20 to 50 dollars) check this website out…this guy is meticulous with his setups and it is by far the only helpful site out there as far as setting up a floyd rose …. http://www.ibanezrules.com/tech.htm

i have i floyd and i cant get it out of tune if i try…..if it gets out of tune going sharp loosen the tension of the bridge and vis versa that all i can think of also drop d types of tunings dont go good because if you loosen one string the other ones get more tension because the bridge sucks them down

I have an Ibanez classical guitar from the early to mid 60’s it has a few dings on the sides but it plays great and has no warps in it or anything. A sticker on the inside says Modelo No. 372, DESDE 1908, and Nagoya, Japan. Other then that their’s not much else to say. I’m sort of thinking of selling it. What could I ask for it?

your two plugs could actually be in and stack out. My randall is stereo and has three plugs. two inputs and a stack out. knowing peavey it is input and stack out. you can try it but i don’t think it is made for stereo.

I was told that this is a Genuine fender guitar body that was made sometime in the 70’s, by a nearby guitar shop. I duno for sure, but that’s what I’m told. I’m not much a fender lover, but a les paul lover. This was my dad’s, which he got it in 1979. My dad got it, because he wanted to learn to play guitar, but he never did. It was totaly customized, it’s jet black with a Mirror pick guard. The shop said that they were not the orginal pick-ups in it. The guitar is complete, it has everything, Floyd Rose Tremelo Bridge (with fine tuning nobs for adjustment.) Pickups H/S/S, 5 way selector switch, Two Tone, One Volume, Strap Screws I belive the jack and pickup selector might need to be replaced, since it’s over 33 years old. Overall The body is in perfect cosmetic condition. However there are a few Minor scuffs on the back, but not throught the finish. They should just buff out with out problems. The Shop also told me that the body was made for a H/S/H pick-up setup. But it must have gotten changed when it was customized. All that is needed is a Fender Stratocaster neck to bring this beast back to life. I don’t know the condition of the electronics since I’ve never pluged it in. The shop said this was worth pretty big bucks. But my loss is your gain. Trades might be welcomed, anything gibson new or old, or copys. It has been sitting in storage since I found it. Send e-mails with offers/trades.

There already are alot of portable recording/mixing/effect boxes around, some have a CD burner too, so while it’s great you want to make your own, and it will make a cool project to do (and you’ll learn alot), but if cost is an issue it will defintely be cheaper to buy one. Good luck! : Just wondering what people would think of a portable device for guitar(ac/elec) & bass that would record your own stuff, store mp3’s for play a long, have a tuner and a metronome? it’s for a project and I’m just lookin for some thoughts. : Thanx

: Does anyone have one of these? I am looking for one! : Thanks! I am an individual, not a dealer. If you’ll take REAL good care and play her often, I have one (I think) was made in the 1960s-70s. She’s been treated like a baby. Has Pearl in script (as in Pearl Guitars where Gibson would normally be) inlaid on the head. The top is cedar, sides rosewood, back mahogany. Neck is rosewood, 20-brass frets, and with double trapezoid-shaped inlaid pearl markers — just like the Jumbo from the 1930s. Also ebony dot markers inlaid on the side of the ivory neck trim. Has a light soft sunburst finish with double tortoiseshell type pick-guards. Inside is stamped: Pearl Guitars, Folk, Made by Mayashi. Imprinted inside on the neck block iz a serial number. She’s in pristine condition with new .012 strings. Never left outside of case. Inside is as clean as new with no warping or loosened joints. Also has ivory pegs with inlaid pearl. A new hard-shell case and a Franklin woven cotton strap with scalloped leather ends. I bought her around 1980. A very rare model — the only other I’ve heard of made by Mayashi is an old Martin copy that was selling for over five grand. This guitar frets lightly and puts out a crisp, clean, strong, deep and rich tone with no rattle. Absolutely no tinniness. Stays completely in tune. I love this guitar, but I can’t play anymore because of advanced arthritis. She needs to be played. Was going to sell her about a year ago for $2500 to a pro guitarist, but wasn’t ready to give up yet. I’m a retired 65 and don’t particularly need the money, so I’ll take $1,500 (as is) if you’ll pay the shipping, and I’ll throw in the new hard-shell case, extra strings, picks, pitch-pipe, and capo. She’s a rare beauty and has been a good friend. I’ll sure miss her.

Bandit with boss mt2 distortion and eq blows your brains out! You’ll get very mean sound with this combination. But you shold drive your bandit through PA system, if you want to make your nuts shake! I recommend it, price is very low compared to the sound you’ll get

Thats a fine amp to start out with, they are tough, can get pretty loud and have a decent ‘sound’ and pretty versitale, so I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with it, as for price, thats really high for one in the US, but not sure for a European price as all gear is a fair bit more compared to here. Well that my opinion, hopefully you’ll get more so you have more to base your decision on. As always also check out the reviews of the amp on harmonycentral.com. : I wanna start a band and so I need anew AMP since mine is a 10 watt amp : I am told 50 watt minimum would do, now I saw a certain amp and I wanto know if its good : I saw the Peavey Bandit 112 : http://www.peavey.com/products/amps_mi/guitaramps/bandit112.cfm : the price is 418 Euros, wich would be about 400 dollars I think : is this expensive for a 80watt amp with pedal? : does somebody have this amp, and is he/she glad with it? : I wanna ùake metal music : thx

Does anyone know anything about this make of guitar. I would like to know if it has any value. I purchased it in the late 70’s. It is a El Degas. Model GL48. There is a small inscription on the label that identifies it as a product of B&J ?? Does that make sense to anyone. Thanking you for any help that you could provide.

B& J were the New York importers of the Japanese -made instruments. If you go to Google.ca and put in El Degas Insturments, a lot comes up, including this information. I have a mandolin they made and it is pretty decent, considering the price.

Hi I love the looks of the telecaster, but I love the sound of Ampeg Tubes and Smashing Riff Distortion. Can I make the TELE sound like Smashing Pumpkins, or even darker and thrasher, System of a Down? Thanks

      • #81232

        Guest

Couple of factors to overcome. Fist is the woods used to make the tele you have you mind on. I can e-mail you a file I have that describes about 50 different woods. The unfortunate side is that in order to have a guitar made from the woods and wood combinations that will give you the sound you want you will have to pay the big bucks for a custom job or do it yourself. If you don’t particularly like that then you can experiment with pickups and modifications to a stock guitar. The first mod that can help you would be to put the right pickups in it, especially stacked or mini-humbuckers. Shop around and make sure to check out seymourduncan.com and dimarzio.com. If I wanted a tele with a ballsy sound I would replace the bridge with a tele bridge that holds a full size humbucker. Then re-rout the body to hold the full size humbucker in the bridge position. Put in an X2N, Invader, or some such high output humbucker in the bridge and a stacked or mini high output humbucker in the neck. Good luck

I recently purchased the subject replacement tuning keys for my Les Paul copy. However, when I removed an old tuner to replace with a new tuner, I found the existing tuning key hole to be larger than the replacement post. Is it technically feasible to fill the existing tuning key holes with wood filler, and once the wood filler has set to the re-drill new holes? Will this compromise the integrity of the post or post hole? I could use some advice here. Thanks!

This would be a mess send back the tuners measure the size of the holes and get some that fit.Or one`s that need the hole bigger its easer to drill than to fill. One other choice is to have metal sleaves made up that would make up the differance but were making a easy job hard. Sorry, Bob. It’s just that I’ve done the procedure that I’ve described. With a little common sense it works very effectively…since most of us can’t have "sleaves" made up we make sleeves by filling and drilling. It is easier to drill than fill, but by the same logic you can always drill out what you have already filled, if you screw up but if you screw up drilling then you have no choice but to fill. Maybe I just assume that most people can do what I can and forget some of the minor details. It’s no big deal, just don’t want you to think I’m an ignorant fool.

If you want to fill the holes and redrill them you will need to use dowels. Wood filler just won’t do it by itself. The best thing would be to buy tuners that fit properly and take the ones you bougt back if you can. If not, you’ll need to buy a dowel that fits snug but not so snug that you have to do any pounding. Cut pieces off slightly smaller than the thickness of the headstock and glue them in. I recommend you cut them so they don’t exactly come flush on both sides, this way you shouldn’t have to do any sanding and mess up your headstock finish…and watch glue run off. Redrill the holes using a small pilot hole first, then the appropriate size. To keep the wood from splintering I’ve found it better to drill a pilot hole all the way through, then drill half way through with the appropriate sized bit, turn over the guitar and drill the rest of the way through from the other side. Make sure you center the holes as precisely as you can or your tuners will look off. Hope this helps.

I would ‘practice’ on a similar type (junk) neck if this is your first time. It took me 2 tries before I got it down pretty good and the first time I really screwed up a maple neck… and don’t think you want to mess up an original ’70’s neck… if you are going to do it do a google search as there are many ‘toutorials’ (with pics and everything) out there or at least invest in a good luthiers book. While the procedure is relativly ‘simple’, the actual work requires alot of ‘feel’ that you can only learn from experince, so if you have a neck around you don’t care about try practicing on that. Good luck ! : does anyone know about refretting a guitar? i have a late 70s fender that needs a fret job in the worst way,and larger gauge frets and an intonation lesson, as well as spring ajustment for heavier gauge strings. is there any one out there who could tutor me a bit?

Hi, I’ve just bought an acoustic guitar. Reading some of the messages on this forum, I understand that acoustic guitar strings aren’t the same as electric guitar strings. How can I tell the difference between electric guitar strings and acoustic strings and which is a better brand of acoustic guitar strings, Gibson or D’addario? Any relevant comments are greatly appreciated.

Having experimented with many different types of strings for my classical guitar, I have found that D’ Addario makes the best strings by far. You will find the strings that best suit your own playing only by trying all the different strings that are available.

Basically the acoustic guitar strings will be made usually from a bronze alloy while electric strings are made from an iron alloy. I won’t recommend a string brand because I feel that there’s too much debate, but any quality name brand should do for you. Depending on the quality of guitar you bought an expensive set or a cheep set might not make much of a difference. Try a few sets out and see which you like best. : Hi, : I’ve just bought an acoustic guitar. Is there anything I can do with my Strat to help the strings go back in tune after I use my trem bar? They go so out of tune if I even bump the thing…. I tried tightening the springs but it didn’t help too much…Any ideas?

Many things you can do. One of which would be to install a better nut and make sure it is doing its job (if you use one). The other which is to replace your springs. Some players (SRV and others) installed only two springs and placed them close at the bridge and spaced at the claw, kind of like making a "V". My 2 pieces of copper, John

Locking tuners run anywhere from about $30-70 bucks or more. I would recommend Ebay. Shop around on the internet as well….musiciansfriend.com, warmoth.com, customshopparts.com, etc. Essentially they replace your existing tuners and have a mechanism that locks your strings. One thing to check is to make sure that the outer diameter of the locking tuner shaft is the same as the inner diameter of your tuner holes. Then the replacement is relatively easy and painless.

There’s several things you can do to alleviate this problem but it depends on how extreme you want to go. First you can replace the tuners with locking tuners. It will help eliminate slack in the windings of the strings…since you don’t have to wind them around the tuner post. Another thing you can do, depends on the type of trem, is to tighten down the screws that mount it to the body…effectively eliminating the play in the trem. When I played Strats the fix I would do is to put a blocks of wood behind and in fron of the tremolo inside the body of the guitar …I don’t use trems. The problem with non-locking trems is the problem you’re having…they go out of tune way too easily. : Is there anything I can do with my Strat to help the strings go back in tune after I use my trem bar? : if you don’t already, use more springs, the more springs the more resistance; it will be harder to use the whammy bar but the strings won’t go out of tune as easily

it all depends (how much its worth, that is) on what model. Its ESP, not LTD, right? what kind of finish?if its and esp, nice finish, newer, good condition, etc., youre probably looking at about a grand, thats if the buyer knows anything about it…

Greetings All! I’m new here so please bear with me. Also I am posting this to other forums, as I am trying to get as much advice on this as I can, so if anyone see’s this on another forum, please forgive me. I have a project Strat that I am working on and the neck I"m planning on using is from an older Kramer. The person I got the neck from (this was years ago…its been laying in the basement for a long time) said the guitar simply "fell over" and the headstock broke. Knowing this individual, it was more likely the result of a temper tantrum. It looks as if someone took the guitar by the body and simply slammed the headstock over a table. It’s not a clean break and I am missing a small piece (about half inch by half inch) that I will have to recreate. If anyone needs more info on how its broken, please e-mail me at [email protected] and I can send you pics of the headstock. Now for the questions… Question #1…what kind of glue would you all recommend for the repair? I’ve seen Tightbond wood glue mentioned in a few places, plus I’ve used this on other wood projects and it seems to hold -very- well, but I’ve also seen references to "hide glue" as well as 2 part epoxy’s. Question #2…As I said before, this is not a clean break by any means…should I try to work with whats still there, or should I try to sand out both sides flat for a better glue joint? Question #3…Would I be just better off all the way around to just cut the headstock off and cut/glue a new one on? And if so…any suggestions on how/where to set/glue the joint? I’m by no means a proffesional luthier, but I have been doing guitar repairs…mostly on my own, for many years now and have even built one from scratch (one of my next refinish projects actually). I also do allot of other woodworking projects, so I have various clamps, etc to do the repair, so please feel free to bombard me with suggestions! Also, depending on how well the refinish on this guitar goes (it’s neon pink at the moment…going to try my first Sunburst…the wife said she’ll take a saw to it if I leave it pink), I will probably go ahead and cut a thin veneer of maple for the face of the headstock just strictly as an esthetic’s thing (again if the rest of it comes out nice), but I will burn that bridge when I get to it. This guitar is going to mainly be a stage back up for my "real" Strat, so I’m willing to be a little bolder then I might be otherwise with one of my "babies". I am greatful for any and all info and assistance…this is definatly something new for me, and I would just like to get a better foot hold, so to speak, before I start working on it. Peter, Thanks for your answer. It appears to my investigation follow up that it seem to be a fake as all USA made Strat from Fender have the serial n° under the "laque". Moreover 6 digit n° is not a Fender code for dating. Anyway thks again. Marc

Peter I own a suuier that was made in the u.s.a. and the sn# must start with a n then no more than six numbers they were only made for a very short time and are collector guitars due to that fact. they play like a usa fender because they are inface a fender made from the same specs and materals so if indeed your guitars sn# starts with a n hold on to it brother Rev. I have seen an older Yammy APX 9 (Nylon) in a pawn shop for what I thought was a reasonable price of $275AUS (about $150US) It has been well used and knocked around a bit but solid and straight with a nice neck but it has obviously been used professionally and that has usually been a good sign to me in the past when buying a guitar. I was just about to walk out the door with it when I read that it was made in Taiwan, and I remembered most of what I read about APX series that they were Japanese. Where are they made now? Are they all made in Taiwan now or is it a lower end guitar or ?? I know people usually respond with things like "if it sounds good to you buy it etc" but sometimes they do sound good but just dont work at a gig or stand up to solid use. WOuld value anyones learned opinions. It looked to me to be about 10 yrs old but could be wrong. It had the knob preamp controls that push in/pull out, not the sliders.preamp

You should defintely get one, if price is an issue you can get free ones that run on your pc, another idea is get a cheap ‘drum machine’ (again many PC based ones for free) or keyboard with one (just as long as it has an adjustable tempo). : I don’t know if i should get one, and will it improve my playing ability?. I’m looking for a way to record my guitar sounds(solos, riffs what not) in real time, with also drum and bass. Is there any software that would get me started?. Someone told me that alot of the Drum machines out there suck, and is quite hard to program. So i don’t know if i should get a drum machine that would run me like 3 to 400 bucks. Please help

if you have a fairly decent computer…downoad ‘acid pro’ and run your guitar into your sound card… The best thing to do is run everything into a mixer…probably take about 8 – 16 channels to do it all…then on the ‘RCA out’ of the mixer, wire it to the ‘RCA in’ on your sound card …its complicated to explain, but if you have a computer and you want to do it, then email me at [email protected]

The recordings of the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet are widely available in music stores. If your town has a store with a classical CD section, chances are you’ll find more than one recording of this excellent group.

Hi, I’m thinking about getting a Boss GT pedal, my friend borrowed a GT6 and that was amazing, and we only scratched the surface of it possibilities. I can’t afford to shell out £400 ($600?) for a GT6 so have decided to look at the older ones. So which is better the GT3 or GT5? The GT3 seems a more popular choice, is it newer/better than the GT5? On the second hand market GT5’s always go for less. Is it because the GT3 is a more compact size, or is it really better. I’ll be using it for metal and jazzy Mr.Bungle/Primus stuff, is one of them better for this type of music? Sorry to sound like an effects newbie, thats probably coz I am! 🙂 Thanks for any help, Guy

Hi Rex, If it’s an acoustic, has a smaller body than most acoustics and the strings are all standard unwound steel strings then it sounds like you’ve got what they call a Plectrum Guitar. It’s tuned like a violin. And can be a lot of fun to play. where’d you find it?

Does anyone have any suggestions on where I can dig up a 4 string acoustic guitar I am a ukulele player (4 string insturment primarily)and want to add an acoustic guitar sound to my playing without re-learning the 6 string fingering. I know that Gibson made some 4-stringers into the 60’s. Is there anyone that sells or re-sells these? DAve Wilk [email protected]

In order to mixdown all your tracks (bass, drums, guitars…)on Cakewalk, you must have translate before, your midi tracks to wav. with another software. Then, you could record your guitar in realtime with bass & drums on background.

I use two right next to eachother on the top and another two on the bottom…it will leave a dead space in the middle but it works ok. You will have to adjust the screws that retain the claw and do a little set up work but it’s pretty easy.

I would consider custom shop work. Do some research in to wood and materials. Also consider what kind of pickups you want. Stock pickups tend to suck…just because they say "Duncan Designed" doesn’t mean they will sound and perform like a good high end Duncan. Check out Warmoth.com and Carvin.com A custom built guitar costs alot but I think it is well worth the money. At Warmoth they have a section that describes tone woods used in instrument making, you’ll have to browse a little casue I don’t remember what it’s under (maybe in the necks and bodies section). All in all you can’t go wrong with a mahagony body with a maple top. It gives you warmth and brightness. I also recommend Koa. And remember to put consideration in to the sound and quality of the instrument over the image. And do take anyone’s advice on which instrument is better…it’s all a matter of opinion.

don’t get a B.C. Rich, they suck, horribly…if you are beginner, i would get something thats gonna hold its value but not cost you an arm and a leg…for example…a fender will hold its value so you can resale it much much better than a b.c. rich. If you like playing heavier stuff, but dont’ have a ton of money…look into BOSS guitar pedals for distortion. hope that helps

i can give you a basic idea of the chord structure… -standard tuning w/ capo @ 3rd fret- chord progression: Bb, Bbmaj7, Gmin, Eb (real names) G, Gmaj7, Emin, C (shape of finger positions) play as if the capo is the top of the neck the rhythem is fast sixteenths with accents on one and two.

The early "flame maple" CW guitars were crafted as an S6 with gloss finish, but no MoP inlay on the headstock or fretboard, before they were produced for the artist series…my early flame maple was destroyed during a break in at my Church…my new Flame Maple will come to me as an artist series guitar…inlays etc. and the most exciting addition (for me, at least) is the L.R. Baggs Duet II electronics. In celebration of 20 years of crafting high quality guitars in Quebec, Seagull is offering two anniversary guitars…you may be interested…check the following site: http://www.seagullguitars.com/anniversaireguitars.htm : Does anyone know anything about this guitar? Do you really need multiple effects? That’s the first question you should ask your self. If you need multiple effects, how many do you need and how often do you use them? I ask because I’ve fallen in to the trap of experimenting with processors and spent alot of money. The cheeper ones give you exactly the tone you pay for…a synthetic sound that’s so raunchy that it doesn’t matter what kind of guitar you play it all sounds the same. Personally, I use stomp boxes now. I have no need for flanging, phasing, trem, chorus, and on and on. Just good distortion. Most high end stomp boxes have better tone and sound much better than most processors, but…you only get the one effect. Weigh out what exactly you need and if you go with a processor save up your money and buy a good, high end one, or possibly a good amp that already has what you need built in. You’ll be glad you did.

Hi, I have an Espana 6 String electric guitar, that was made in England. The guitar was purchased (used) in 1973. It came with a Gibson Skylark GA-5 amplifier. Both still work fine. Any info on the guitar would be appreciated. Thanks, Rich

Hi Rick, My guitar is a solid body – "Strat" with a "Les Paul" neck. The guitar is primarly black with a sunburst in the center. The fret board is rosewood with mother of pearl inlay. There are 2 pick-ups, a volume control and a "A,B,C,D" knob. I’ve had the guitar for years. I have recently started to get back into playing and wondered about the history of the guitar. I presume that the guitar was made in the 60’s. It seems like a very well made guitar. The Espana guitar company is mainly know for making high quality classical guitars, but I have found little information on their electric guitars. Please share any addition info you may have. Thanks, Rich : : Just wondering if you got any information on Espana Guitar . i am selling an alesis quadraverb-gt. it is in excelent condition. it isn’t a really heavy amp but it does have a nice crunch. it is great for you studio guys. it is stereo and midi capable. it is a great amp for you guys that play for church or in a worship band. it is also great for blues and excelent for country. it has lots of effects, cleans, and distortion veriations. alesis has always had my favorite echos and delays. this is a really great amp especially for worship bands, country, and blues. i am asking $300 but this is not my final price. for more info please e-mail me at [email protected]

all you crunchy, mushy guitar players out there this is for you. i have a randall head that will give you the sound you are wanting. it is extremely dirty sounding with a nice deep crunch. it will chew up and spit out any thing you put into it. it is great for the modern styles of metal. it is in great condition. it has small scratches on it from when i cleaned the inside. i used the wrong size screw driver and i made a small scratch on the back but other than that it is in excelent condition. it is very loud too. if nobody is interested i will sell it for more on ebay but i am asking for $225.00. i will sell it on ebay for 300.00 so take advantage of this offer. if you are interested please e-mail me for more info at [email protected]

I figured out a bit of Bad Side start in C – open position with pinky on 5th string fingerpick strings- 532, 432,42 Keep up that pattern and drop to a A# bass then open A in Bass then C bass – repeat 1st chords – C, A# F 2nd chords (verse) C, A, F, D#, A#, C 3rd chords – (I’m a light year…) (bar on 8)F,C,D#,A# 4th chords -(Sitting…)C, D#, A#, C There you go folks. It’s not very scientific but it sounds good. That’s how I play it after 15 minutes of working on it. I love this game. Terry

Audigy 2 is just Audigy with 6.1 speaker support – not worth it for recording (or anything else in my opinion) If you’re going to be doing solo recording – 1 track at a time – the audigy platinum will do you wonders once you tweak it a bit. If you’re going to do multi-track recording it’s all but worthless, in which case i suggest buying a mic pre-amp and a adc/dac converter that comes with a dsp24 pci card – this is the setup i use for recording my band, it set me back about 400$ but i’ve never been more satisfied for my price (the 400$ price was for an 8 in/out pre-amp and an 8 in/out adc/dac – both single space rackmounts) hope this helps : I’m assembling a pc and would like to start doing some hard drive recording. I think the Audigy 2 zs platinum pro is the best compter generated sound blaster for recording vocals and gigs. I don’t know how you say it’s just for 6.1 or this kosshers.

i know how to drop d tune, but when they say" This song’s tuning is drop D; then all strings down one whole step (C-G-C-F-A-D)" what does the "down one whole step" mean? thanks!

        Guest

Smart Guy’s i.d card has a picture of a rock on it. Don’t pay attention to him. Drop D tuning is where you take the low E string (the thick one) and tune it down one step to D. You leave all the other strings alone. When it says to tune down one whole step then you tune to dgcfad instead of eadgbe. A "step" is the measure between tones. From A to B is one whole step. From A to A# is a half step. B to C and E to F are also half steps as there are no sharps or flats in between. You should probably pick up some literature that explains this kind of guitar theory, it makes it a little easier to understand than a message board.

        Guest

That means loosen each string so that the pitch is one complete tone down from dropped d 440 tuning. The only reason you would want to do this is to play along with the recording you can play the song in normal dropped d tuning. Or just transpose the song up two frets if your using bar chords.

since that guy decided to be completley unhelpful, and so bold as to ask why (why not?! its a pretty standard modification) i, in my own hunt for the answer gave g&l a call and heres the skinny: a telecaster pickguard will NOT work because of the position of the screws. the only way to get one is to call 530-899-1503 which is their direct distributor. the people there were really nice and helpful, and in two weeks i should have a nice new black pickguard. : I want to change the pickguard on my ASAT Classic, and I am having trouble finding a company that makes one for it. When they start losing their tone, get all crusty/rusty and it doesn’t clean off anymore, or you just feel like it, no real science to it, chances are if you are asking you probally should. Soak em in naptha first and they’ll last longer – all this assuming they are steel strings. : Dear Guitar Aficionados, : My question will be simple for you. How do I know when it is time to replace the strings on my acoustic guitar? Thanks for your insight.

my buddy claims to have just acquired a Fender Stratocaster made of lucite. The neck, however, is a ’63 1.5" with a brass nut. He received it from an 80 yr old retired Fender employee. He’s wondering about the value of this guitar. Anyone have a clue?

I worked a Guitar Center in L.A. and there are a few of these listed in our Fender one of a kind books, the model was never released as a sale item and brought a pretty penny to the right person. There were not many so I think 4 or 5 would be the correct number.I spoke with a long time friend at Fender and was told there is 1 in the vintage room at Fender and is not for sale at any price. Details seem to be different accourding to who you are talking to.

Don’t know of fender making any out of lucite, all the lucite ones I’ve seen are made other companies/people, so the neck would probally be worth more than the rest of the guitar, take the neck off and check the date stamp on it, a ’63 could fetch up to $450 or put it on a real strat body, really a waste to put that neck on a lucite body. : my buddy claims to have just acquired a Fender Stratocaster made of lucite. Anyone have a clue? first off there are only about 3 or 4 known to exist many people say it was made in the 60’s the fact is that guitar was made in 1955-1956 and it was used to show off the fender vibrato the last one that sold on the open market sold for $50,000 the neck would be priceless since there are only 4 of them the reason why there is only 4 is that the router bits kept breaking on the lucite when they made the bodys so there were very many bad bodys made and many rejects if your friend has a lucite strat it could be worth as much as $100,000 to a real collector the one that sold for $50,000 did so about 10 years ago hope that helps

I am trying to find out more about my Epiphone small acoustic guitar. I bought it used about 1974 from Gruhn Guitars. The label is gone, I thing it used to say "made in Kalamazoo." One notable thing is that the "Epiphone" name is not inlaid or painted, like a Gibson, but is embossed (if that is the right word)on a triangular metal badge in raised gold letters on white enamel. Also "X 5258" is inked on the block that joins the neck to the body on the inside of the guitar. There may be more characters that follow. If anyone can help, thanks.

Thanks for your input! Hi Steve The pros and cons this is part of the old gibson vs. Fender war.The srings on the 24 3/4 will be will be loser to get to pitch and the frets are closer together. so it would be less of a sretch for those far awy notes. But some times when playing open chords you can here th E string go out of key just for a split second.Ref ac/dc dirty deeds you can here it on the cd.THE 25 1/2 Is tighter longer reach needed . What feels and sounds good to you is what counts !!!! I build at my shop mostly 24 3/4 but 25 is geting popular ref (PRS) this is the middle of the road . So play away and let your ears and fingers to the final test. Good luck Bob tremontguitars.com

Thanks for the info Bob. Being an old guy with chubby fingers doesn’t help, but I definitely like the way this sounds. Probably the humbuckers. For me, neck width seems to be more of an issue than neck length but I can definitely feel the difference when I switch to my sons guitar. I’m a rank novice so I’ll just keep on trying. Some nice work on your website. I’m in Chester myself so maybe some day I’ll look you up. Thanks again.

String guage also has an affect. I find that with a heavier string you can compensate a little for the shorter scale length. The compromise is that you might have to raise your action a little to compensate for fret buzz.

no you are not crazy, there were indeed some squiers made in usa (i have one). in The Fender Book (get one if you can!) it says as follows: "In 1990 and 1991 some USA- made Stratocaster and Telecaster bodies and necks were sent to Fender’s mexican factory for preparation and finishing. They were then returned to the american plant for assembly and completion. This procedure qualified the resulting guitars to carry a ‘made in usa’ designation, but they were marketed under the Squier brandname." so… it’s a fender USA with a squier price. my advice: RUN AND GET IT AS LONG AS YOU CAN. i have posted a review at harmony-central.com , read it. one of the best guitars i own. good luck!

What kind of bridge do you have? Floyd Rose? If it’s a Floyd then you will need an allen wrench to loosen the screws at the back of the bridge. Pay attention to what you’re doing because the new strings have to go in the same way the old ones came out. I recommend doing one string at a time. Let me know if you need any more help.

it’s a 3mm allan key, if the holder has become too deep for the allan key to reach in then you need to take the back off and remove the holder, its a pain in the arse though so try not to let that happen

Tune the first string to A and then go from there, use the A to tune the D…. etc…. or get an electronic tuner or one for your PC, and a baritone guitar would probally be nice for that tuning as on a regular guitar you going to be buzzing dropping that low, some string manafacturers make strings for low tunings though. : I have all of these taproot tabs, but I can’t use them because I don’t know how to tune to ADGCFA!!! hello, im gonna type in small print since you slammed me so hard. i loved the letter you wrote. it was good, i have to admit. i do agree that yngwie would blow me off stage. when i see him play live, it is almost majical. he inspires me more than any guitarist i can think of. i cannot do that on stage like he does. i dont even try to do what he does. he is to good at what he does to be copied by anyone. yngwie is a very close friend of a friend of mine, and because of that i had the honor of meeting him, he actually played one of my guitars. preety cool. i dont think yngwie liked the title to my demo either. as a matter of fact i dont even think he likes me at all. that doesnt change my opinion of him. i respect him for his talent. i have been inspired by alot of players- van halen, randy rhoads, vinnie moore, tony macalpine, all of whom who were shredding in thier own style before they heard of yngwie malmsteen(including myself). i was a shredder before i heard of yngwie. when ynwie came out alot of guys fuckin quite playing. one close friend of mine said quote"this guy is playing the style i have been perfecting" he was an awesome player, and he quite. you have to understand that yngwie was not the first guy to shred. ask yngwie, he would tell you go listen to frank marino, or especially uli roth, whom yngwie absolutely worships. do your homework. dont believe me, find out for yourself. go to any search engine, and you could verify what im saying. as for the name of the demo"fastest guitar on earth". i knew that might raise eyebrows, and i dont care. the cd is dedicated to the fastest guitarist on earth whoever that may be. it even says that on the cd. am i the fastest guitarist in the world? i doubt it. am i faster than yngwie? yes , who give a shit. thats not why yngwie is so great. he is great because of his style. why do you think yngwie is so insecure? i dont know, but maybe its because he knows he is not the fastest. truth hurts. personally, i think he is fuckin paranoid. i mean if i was that famous, and rich, i would not care who was faster than me. what a joke! maybe that paranoia helps him and others stay on their toes. i dont know. i do find your opinion very interesting. thanks for the honest letter. i respect someone who has a strong opinion. take care, JJJ

I heard some demos online, and John Jaunese, is indeed an amazing guitarist. Very unique and worth a listen. His blistering speed and accuracy/technique will blow many people away. I think he will defantly go to the very top of the class. Won’t be long, I don’t think, before his name is as common as Malmsteen, Via, Satriani and the rest. Just my opinion. But he is indeed way fucking fast and meshes several styles with ease simialar to Malmsteen, but for many won’t be boring like Malmsteen. His latest album is to be released soon an I think should cause quite a stir as his demo is defantly doing that. Basicaly tripped me out. Haven’t heard a new artist that good since Malmsteen. One track on his demo was written when he was 15 so lacks the extream technical abilities of his latest work. No, I’m not his agent, and I am a die-hard Malmsteen fan, but this guy’s got character and is way so fucking good. hello, : im gonna type in small print since you slammed me so hard. i loved the letter : you wrote. it was good, i have to admit. i do agree that yngwie would blow me : off stage. when i see him play live, it is almost majical. he inspires me : more than any guitarist i can think of. i cannot do that on stage like he : does. i dont even try to do what he does. he is to good at what he does to be : copied by anyone. yngwie is a very close friend of a friend of mine, and : because of that i had the honor of meeting him, he actually played one of my : guitars. preety cool. i dont think yngwie liked the title to my demo either. : as a matter of fact i dont even think he likes me at all. that doesnt change : my opinion of him. i respect him for his talent. i have been inspired by alot : of players- van halen, randy rhoads, vinnie moore, tony macalpine, all of whom : who were shredding in thier own style before they heard of yngwie : malmsteen(including myself). i was a shredder before i heard of yngwie. when : ynwie came out alot of guys fuckin quite playing. one close friend of mine : said quote"this guy is playing the style i have been perfecting" he was an : awesome player, and he quite. you have to understand that yngwie was not the : first guy to shred. ask yngwie, he would tell you go listen to frank marino, : or especially uli roth, whom yngwie absolutely worships. do your homework. : dont believe me, find out for yourself. go to any search engine, and you : could verify what im saying. : as for the name of the demo"fastest guitar on earth". i knew that might raise : eyebrows, and i dont care. the cd is dedicated to the fastest guitarist on : earth whoever that may be. it even says that on the cd. am i the fastest : guitarist in the world? i doubt it. am i faster than yngwie? yes , who give : a shit. thats not why yngwie is so great. he is great because of his style. : why do you think yngwie is so insecure? i dont know, but maybe its because he : knows he is not the fastest. truth hurts. personally, i think he is fuckin : paranoid. i mean if i was that famous, and rich, i would not care who was : faster than me. what a joke! maybe that paranoia helps him and others stay on : their toes. i dont know. i do find your opinion very interesting. thanks for : the honest letter. i respect someone who has a strong opinion. : take care, : JJJ

can’t find the original post, but find it weird someone would quit playing just cuz someone else is ‘better or faster’ than them or is pretentious enough to think quit cuz someone has ‘perfected their style". Though I still like to ‘shred’ sometimes I mainly find it extremely boring to listen to or watch now. Being the ‘fastest’ dosen’t really count for anything to me, speed is an essential part of playing but I would never pay just to listen to or see someone cuz they are ‘the fastest’, my opinion YMMV. : hello, : im gonna type in small print since you slammed me so hard. i loved the letter : you wrote. it was good, i have to admit. i do agree that yngwie would blow me : off stage. when i see him play live, it is almost majical. he inspires me : more than any guitarist i can think of. i cannot do that on stage like he : does. i dont even try to do what he does. he is to good at what he does to be : copied by anyone. yngwie is a very close friend of a friend of mine, and : because of that i had the honor of meeting him, he actually played one of my : guitars. preety cool. i dont think yngwie liked the title to my demo either.

I am going to purchase a vintage blackface fender amp from the mid 60s, but i’m not sure whether or not to go for a tremolux or a bandmaster. I play mostly 60’s rock, surf, and ALOT of Beatles. Can anyone who has used either or both of these amps point out the pros and cons of each or simply suggest which would be better for my type of music? thanks

I got it out of the closet last month after nearly a 25 year rest period. It had a couple of broken strings and a lot of dust. I bought new strings, a tuner, and some books and I have been having a great time trying to remember what I used to do with it. I never was a good player, and what little I did do well I have lost. But all it took was a couple of strums to remember why I wanted to play it. I am still amazed at how good it sounds. I would also be interested in knowing what became of the company. I see where Epiphone is making an electric version and Gibson has brought it back into production as an acoustic. Gibson even has a brief history of the SJ200 on thier website.

: I was just handed down a Cortez acoustic 12 string from my sister (who had gotten it from her cousin). It has a large body and boxy shape like a Martin. The tones are nice and deep the way I like them. It’s made well, has bracing similar to some of the best guitars. It lacks any internal sticker so I’m at a loss for type, serial number or year.

Another couple things: Scale length and string guage. I have two guitars that I drop to D, one has a 25 inch scale and the other a 25.5 inch scale. The longer scale tends to produce a more gutsy sound. Also, if you use a heavier string for your E string when you do it then you put more tension on it in the flatter D tuning and you get more string energy out of it. I like to use a 52 guaged string when I down tune. Remember to check your intonation if you change string styles. Let me know if you need any more help.

Hello to everybody! My title tell´s it all, but I will make it (hopefully) more clear. I´m searching used USA made Jackson RR-electricguitar with hardshell case (RR1 or custom shop RR). The colour should be black. The guitar must be in very good condition! So, if you are going to sell your Jackson RR away, contact to me ([email protected]). Please find out the shipping cost, how much it does cost if you send this RR and hardshell case to Finland? I will pay taxes when your package arrives to my country. Could I pay with collect on delivery? IF I´m very lucky and some of you or your friends are coming to visit in Finland then I pay cash right to your (or your friends) hand. Please e-mail me your total price demand with shipping cost´s and if you have pictures from your RR attach them to your message! I have really terrible flu, so my english may be awful to read…sorry! I’d say I’m an intermediate by now.. I’ve been mainly teaching myself and at the moment I’m trying to learn the fretboard. I have this really basic system that teaches me the first 12 frets in two weeks or so.. That’s if I stick to it and learn a fret (with both sharps and flats) per day. I’ve kind of stopped with it seeing as its boring and I’m not really learning pitch- just the names of notes. What I really need now, is an extra kick in the butt.. Not just with this but everything guitar related.. So I’ve come online and have searched download.com for some good free guitar programs. Most aren’t free and those that are, really aren’t worth mentioning. I did come across this though, a Certain ‘Guitar Power’ program.. but I have to order it after 30 days is up- elsewise it stops working. I was wondering if anyone here might have a crack for it or an even better program that’s FREE. Email me at [email protected] with any details, it’d be appreciated. 🙂

Recently a friend of mine gave me the single pickup, pots and 5 way switch from his Ibanez RG270, I have an RG120. I have already cut a slot for the single pickup between the two humbuckers, but i cant wire it like the 270 because the humbuckers are wired together so there is only one positive and ground line from each, where on the 270 there is two posi outputs, is it possible to rewire the humbuckers from my 120? I have opened one of the humbuckers up and it appears they are wired in series, so just splitting the two positive wires apart and running a separate wire for one of them and the splicing the two grounds together should work right? Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks! Greg K

That will work fine but you shoud install a 220v capacitor relay in between and add a slot for a stectoid bar.

Ok i went ahead and rewired the neck pickup so it has two outputs. I wired it all together with alligator clips so i can test it, and wow it sounds way different than it did originally — i like it. I think i am going to leave the bridge humbucker the way it is and just use four of the switch positions for now. A couple questions tho, what advantage would the capacitor relay give me and what is a stectoid bar, i have searched high and low on the net and have not heard of it anywhere. Im sorry if i sound like a n00b, but hey this is my first time modifying an electric guitar, i have enough knowledge about electrical wiring i think, i just dont know how most of it applies to electric guitars. Anyhow, thanks for any help you can provide! GregK

I don`t recondmend it for my guitars .When my guitars are built i give the finger board one coat of stweart Macdonalds fretboard finishing oil .Only because i use naptha before i fret this is a nasty chemical -degreaser. To me lem/linseed/teak just don`t dry and after a while will loosen up a fret .some guitar makers will disagree with me.The stuff from stews drys over night and won`t oil up your strings. good luck Bob tremontguitars.com

Hi, I’m looking for anything anybody can tell me about a guitar I got hold of not so long ago… It’s a deep-bodied semi acoustic, single cutaway, brown sunburst, very well made with a nice action and a great sound – and an Encore. Being more used to Gibsons and Gretsches it came as a surprise to find such a nice guitar with a name I’d always associated with cheap rubbish, and I’d like to find out a little more about it. Suggestions, anyone? Thanks, Charlotte

This is one of the bad things about boogies and all amps.Always have a speaker hooked up the power has to go somewere boogies have on-line manuals at there site this might help get you started. They claim no speaker can damage tubes trans ect .But you did not run long enough to do much harm .Take a look at the manual online and go from there.Prob a power tube . When a tube amp is used without a speaker, it is running on an empty load. This will cause the tubes to fuck out, and you have to replace the powertubes

Would somebody besides a salesperson tell me the REAL differences between the two? I usually get "there’s really no difference" (yeah…right….price tag….duh) or "the Epiphones made out of cheaper materials" (….no s**t!!…what gave it away….price??). Yup it’s the materials, and some epis (and gibsons too) are poorly made, so you usually have to inspect a few to get a ‘good’ one, but an epi w/new pickups is cheaper than a gibson and generally sounds as good. : Would somebody besides a salesperson tell me the REAL differences between the two? The real difference comes down to materials selection. When wood is purchased it comes in different grades…pore structure, density, grain, etc. Epiphone uses a lower grade…can our ears hear the difference? Probably not, maybe a dog can. Also, Epiphone will use less quality parts. The pickups aren’t as good (i.e. probably cost just a couple of bucks to make), the pots and switches aren’t as good and probably don’t have gold contacts. The fret wire is probably a cheeper alloy of metal. You name it Epiphone is going to use an inferior material. As far as craftsmanship, I personally feel that Epiphones are put together just as well as Gobson, afterall those Koreans have more to loose if their production slips than do their American counterparts. I go with Epiphone because of price and if they’re properly set up you can’t tell the difference in a blind taste test (with the exception of the pickups of course). Hope this helps.

I personally feel a great deal of differences between the epi & the Gibson. Not only in the sound quality but in the playability as well (craftsmen ship). Handmade Vs. Machinemade. It is true that you can find duds but Gibson takes alot of time and do several inspections so that they don’t slip through(hand made). They truely hold to their name.I own a LPS-EBCH equiped with a Bigsby. Save your $$$$ and get the real thing you’ll know the difference after playing one for a periode of time. As for the blind test, I’m up for it!..;) I’ve played both

I play a 1971 Ibanez Lesp Paul copy. I have 3 amplifiers: A Peavey Rage 158, Line 6 Spider 12, and a Fender Ultimate Chorus. I never use the fender, it has too much mid range and too weak of a sound. The line 6 sounds good when I play but bad when I mic it. Sounds too thin and has ear splitting treble. The bass just makes it sound muffled. The Rage 158 acutally sounds ok, but somewhat staticy. I have 3 distortion pedals; a Danelectro Fab Tone Distortion, Boss Heavy Metal, and Ibanez Power Lead. I only use the Fab tone but I can’t find a good balance between the treble and bass. The music I write is a cross between grunge, with influences like Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots and Nirvana, and Hard Rock/Heavy Metal, with bands like Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, and Korn. If anyone has any suggestions for good amps, pedals, or effects for this type of sound, please let me know. Thanks, Dave

I have been practing scales now,(major, minor) all that stuff..But i can’t figure out how to scale over changing chords, even if the chord changes are slow its really hard..I have a question that i would be grateful is someone would solve. When someone is playing certain chords like A, C, and D, does your solo have to fit with the exact timing with the changes ?. I know it’s a little hard to explain but if someone would write back i would go intoo more detail.. But if anyone would just give a little advice, it would help me a great deal

I’m assuming your playing in a minor key (A,C,D)- this implies that you’re in the key of a minor. What are the notes in an a minor scale? A,B C D E F G. However, for some interesting harmonic tools, try throwing in accidentals and stuff- use the harmonic minor scale (this is your usual minor scale except it has a raised 7th, so you’d play G sharp instead of just G.) Or use the blues scale (in a minor this is A C D E flat E D) Just some suggestions you probably know anyhow but I hope this helps.

        Guest

I’m not sure if this will help but here goes: usually there is one key that you can stay in and play different notes of the same scale over all the chords in the progression. You may have to fiddle with which scale is the right scale, but your ear will tell you which one is right. HOWEVER, there is something even more useful that will benefit you immensely as you continue your lifelong journey of discovering the guitar. If you can learn how to play all your scales at all hand positions in the neck, you will be able to change the scale you are playing without even changing your hand position. So if you are playing an "A" chord in the 5th position, if you can play your A scale, your C scale and your D scale while your hand is in the 5th position you will find a whole world of possibilites open up to you. I’m still not a master of this simple little lesson, I’m still a student as well.

I recently purchased through E-Bay an Epiphone Sheraton Gibson. Blonde, maple/birch, with rosewood fretboard, mother of pearl and abalone inlay on the headstock (vine) and fretboard (v design). There is no stylized ‘E’ anywhere on the instrument and the serial number (or perhaps the manufacturer’s number) is printed on a label inside the Fhole but there is no stamped number on the headstock. The number inside the Fhole is: P49415 8817. Could this P represent a Philadelphia produced Epiphone from 1958-1960? The Epiphone has two nickle plated humbucking in black saddles. Tuning pegs are gold as are the bridge and bolted in tailpiece. The bridge and tailpiece are somewhat corroded which suggests some age? Can anyone help me with this?

The guitar is a dreadnaught cutaway with factory electronics. I would like to know it’s approximate value, and what "SLM" stands for. Thanks. Rico

I had the guitar of which you speak growing up. There were at least two models made that year by Alvarez to commemorate the 60th anniversary of “St Louis Music”. St. Louis Music is the company that distributes Alvarez guitars in the united states. The electronics are simple, and are passive (no power used at the guitar) and were rather poor because it was one of the early stabs at putting pickups in acoustics at the factory. The other guitar released that year commemorating the anniversary is much more sought after due to it’s design…its a dreadnought with no circular soundhole, it has fillagree sound holes at the top and bottom just below and above where the neck meets the body (think Ovation’s guitar design) and these sound holes were covered inside the guitar with paper filters. When I sold mine in the mid-1990’s I got $300 in trade from an established guitar shop. I have no idea what they’re worth now but seeing as how they’re not as special as they seem (Alvarez releases anniversary guitars now like they’re dollar bills) I doubt they’ve went up too much. Hope this helps!

: I love me new EPI Les Paul except that the tuners are junk. Can these be replaced with another quality tuner that has the same footprint? It depends on the kind of tuners it has on it now. Chances are you can, but if you can’t get replacements you could always just fill in the old screw holes, and put on new tuners. (I suggest Schaller). jake

if you just bought the classic or standard modle and it came with the jade type tuner keys,.. I just replaced mine with a set of grover 201’s and they come so close to covering the old holes you don’t notice until you start nit-picking the guitar,..and they line up with the other screw holes already in the headstock,.. the only thing I had to do was open up the thru holes in the headstock to .390in to accept the hub on the grover tuners body (but don’t drill the holes all the way through so if you want to put the old tuners bck on their front side bushings will still press into the wood in the headstock. Hope this helps,.. 🙂 Shawn.

I actually love the sound of my DC3 Danelectro. But it would be cool to get a hum-free guitar for recording purposes. Forgive my ignorance, but could a humbucker be added to a Danelectro? Wouldn’t that mean losing the sound I love so much?

Unfortunately any mod you make will change the tone and sound. You can put some stacked coil humbucker or single coil slot humbuckers in a single coil slot. You might even get a better sound if you shop around and use good quality parts.

Looking for some feedback on purchasing a guitar effects rack where I can manage 2-different settings and swith between them by means of a foot-switch. I play through a mixer style PA system and want some more effects for lead and rhythm guitar. I don’t need hundreds of presets, just a simple dual-lead system that I can manage with a foot switch.

: i am guitarist from indonesia : can you talk to me about blues bending tehnique : ok thanks for everything What do you already know about this To bend you put your finger on the string below the note you are going to bend up to. Strike the string and push it up till you get the note/sound you want. There are variations to this. You canhave the string alreadt pushed up and then release the pressure to return to the note you are on or you can push up release push up release to give a wavering effect How far below or above the note you need to be you will have to experiment with Good luck Peter Australia

Of course I found this out after listening to him and MIKE ANTHONY FROM VAN HALEN chat for a minute via realplayer on the website. Howcome I’ve never heard of this guy before? Can anyone in here tell me more about him? Is he Jason’s brother or something? What’s the deal??

It depends on a lot of factors. If it is a 1950 SJ then it could be worth up to $4,000 or so. But if it’s in excellent condition, there is the possibility that its been refinished, or had parts replaced like the bridge, tuners, etc. which would dramatically impact the value (like down to $1000 to $1500). Anyone placing a solid value on it would need to check that stuff out.

At the very least; a chorus effect and a decent reverb with a small amount of delay. You’ll have to experiment with settings. Perhaps if someone already has they could post it here. You’ll need a decent effects unit though with all the neccessary parameters.

It tends to go flat when you bend notes. Keith Richards guitar-tech sets up his axe with a larger diameter single-strand string to deal with the problem. I also heard he removes the low E on some of his guitars. I also heard he’s made alot of money. So…give it a go!

Hi this problem is most likly a tight slot in the nut. This grabs the string while tunning, bending ECT.IF possible measure the width of this slot with feeler gauges. It should be at least .020 This is the width i make my custom guitars with. Also go to the local hardeware store and get some graphite powder they sell it in tubes to free up locks it looks like ground up pencil lead.loosing strings put a pinch on finger tip and rub in the slots works wonders good luck. To get the strings to sit the proper height off the fret board waht needs to be done? Does the bridge need to be adjusted and is this something an inexperianced person should attemp?

does anyone have a US strat Ultra (with lace sensors)and know how to adjust the rear springs. it seems the Ultra has a sort of fixed spring and 2 removeable springs. I have a US strat Ultra (with lace sensors. Love it!The "fixed" spring in the middle you refer to, is known as a "trem setter". It is used to set the sensitivity and "feel" of your tremolo by adjusting the two thumb nuts at either end of the rod. I.E. you can give it a firmer or lighter.. looser feel by adjusting these. To re-level your bridge after changing to heavier gauge strings, you need to remove the back plate and screw in the two screws more, that hold the two tension springs. Screwing them in more will strech the springs, adding more tension thereby bringing the elevated bridge back down. You will probably have to repeat this process several times because when you change the screw settings your guitar will go out of tune and require retuning, then when retuned, that will again raise the bridge a little but not as much as before. You can minimize the number of repeat times by over compensating the tension a little each time till you get close. Hope this helps. Good luck.

as far as your F350M, I’m not positive but I see near mint ones on Ebay going for 400-500. I’ve got a 1994 EF350MC in terrific condition. I paid like $900 for it new. I’d be lucky to get half that for it today! Don’t know why but Tak’s don’t seem to hold their value. Even though they are suberb guitars. I’ve also got a LTD1992. Cedar top with Flamed Koa back and sides. The action is better than most electrics I’ve played and it’s still only worth about $600.

ok. i tried to tune my ibanez a step down. it was a floyd rose locking system. ive been stuffing around trying to retune this bastard and have gotten no where. the tuning is stuffed now. no matter. after a little reading I realise that i have to keep retuning on the fine tuning part. Im worried whether i have bent the bridge while i was stuffing around. it looked to be bending up. plus if i were to accidently wind the tuner a pitch too high without any locking units, is it possible i put on too much pressure and bent it up. HELP dammit. how do i tune this bastard. do i need to muck around with the lower locking system on the body. help

      • #80487
        Anonymous
        Guest

I don’t think it is possible to bend a floyd by tuning, you’d have to seriously crank on the tremolo to do any damage. I’ll describe the process for tuning down from the beginning. First, undo the locking nut, adjust your fine tuners so that they are in the half way position, and remove the plastic cover from the backside of the guitar that covers the underside of the springs and trem. On the underneath side of the trem you should have three springs connecting the tremolo to a claw, which in turn connects to the guitar by two screws. If your guitar is set up for normal tuning you will have to adjust these screws by turning them counterclockwise about a quarter turn at a time (screwing them out of the guitar). This is going to compensate the springs and bridge for loosening the strings (i.e. down tuning). Leave the locking nut unlocked and tune your guitar using the tuners (leave the fine adjustment tuners alone). You will probably have to tune each string over and over until everything settles…just keep doing it until it stays in tune. Now check the pitch agnle on the bridge. If it isn’t level and points towards the headstock then you will need to screw those screws on the underside of the guitar in somemore to pull the back of the bridge down. If the back end of the bridge is being pulled down too far by the springs then you will need to loosed those screws on the underside to allow the strings to pull the bridge up for you. In either case, make the appropriate adjustment and retune the guitar. Repeat the procedure until your bridge is where you want it. Then lock down the nut and use the fine tuners. Your intonation will probably be off but that’s a step for another day. Floyds are a pain in the ass for alternate tuning. I used to down tune on a floyd but I found it easier just to use a guitar with a fixed bridge. Hope this helps…let me know if you need more help.

I don’t think anyone has proof for which exactly is the best neck but I prefer neckthrough. I just think that with the right combination of tone woods and pickups neckthrough gives the best sustain and overall tone. The down side is that if you warp or tweek your neck you can’t buy a replacement.

Im having a problem with the pick ups, I think. When I flip the switch to choose what pick up, 2 positions have alot of static in them. I dont have an amp right now but my stack-in-a-box is fine with other guitar. Is this a pick up problem? Please advise. Thanx

I am a little surprised that srv never gave johnny winter any credit for his influence considering johnny’s sound is all over srv’s playing.

Hello. I have an ESP LTD and it has a Floyd Rose Tremlo. I just wanted to know if anyone could explain how to change the strings. I do not wish to mess up my guitar and i have never changed the strings on this Guitar before. any help would be greatly apreciated. Thanx

First, use the appropriate allen wrench to loosen the locking nut. Then, for each string (one at a time) loosen a string. On the back of the floyd there are some more allen wrench screws that lock the string in to the bridge…loosen the one that corresponds to the string you are changing first. Pull the end of the string out of the bridge. Take a new string and cut the ball end off of the string. Place the end that had the ball end in to the bridge where the old one came out of and tighten the allen screw that holds it in place. Attach the other end of the string to the tuner and tighten. Repeat for all remaining strings, set your fine tuning adjustment screws to about a halfway position, and tune the guitar. Tighten down the locking nut and adjust tuning with the fine adjustment screws. If you need more information on adjusting the bridge for height or pitch let me know.

Dear Porkbone, I have been playing now for about 5 years and still am having problems tuning my guitar. I used to own a Squire Stagemaster which had a floyd rose bridge and locking tremlo. I always noticed that when I would tune the guitar, every time I made an adjustment to other strings, it would knock the ones that I have already tuned out of tune. I thought that maybe it was just because the guitar was cheap. I recently purchased a ESP KH-502, which isn’t cheap, and am still having the same problems. I would greatly appreciate any tips you could offer. Thank You Will
