Re: HELP: gig with a 40-60w amp??

Howdy,

Man, I use a 20 watt to play places that small. A 40 to 60 watter getts LOUD man. 50w is normally too loud for most people. Do you play clean or distorted normally. That may be a problem. Both of those amps have Master volumes so that helps. You may not get too much headroom though.
The Beatles used 30 watters at Shea stadium in front of like 30,000.

Re: HELP: gig with a 40-60w amp??

Hmm.I'd get a 60 watt amp.Especially if your drummer is
a heavy-hitter.40 watts might not be enough.Better to have and not need it,than to need it and not have it !!

McPherson Guitar

I have a 12 String McPherson Guitar. It has 3 oval holes (one middle bottom, then one one each side mid-body) and a sunburst finish. Can anyone tell me ANYTHING about these guitars? I can't find ANYTHING on the Internet about them.

Re: McPherson Guitar

They got the nick name "Bird house guitar" cause of the holes. I've only seen one about 15 years ago. If memory serves me right, I believe they were made in Minneapolis? Hope someone knows for sure.

PICK UP on Epiphone been improved???????

i heard the pickup on ephiphone are now better and generally quite good which doesnt require to be changed to duncan or EMG...pls advise, thanks

Re: PICK UP on Epiphone been improved???????

I have the old pickups on a sheraton - they can be muddy and youve got to play around alot with tone and balance to get a good sound. Apparently the new pickups are vacuum packed which reduces some squeeling problems at high volumes. Don't know if theyve changed the spec of magnets and winding though.
I'm getting some kent armstrongs - which are apparently a big improvement for half the price of Seymour Duncans.

Re: PICK UP on Epiphone been improved???????

I have the old pickups on a sheraton, and with some tweaking, depending on what I'm playing, i can get some great tone out of it. Maybe they were just inconsistent. Nice inlays, though.

need advise on:
1:sound card for pc recording ( fpr demo only...)
2:epiphone vs gibson
3:EMG 81 vs Duncan
4:Amp simulator + pedal setup~~~
thanks

Re: XXX

I am not a good guitarist, don't know that much about gear & amps but I know every fucking thing about Pc recording. My friend there is only one card for a guitarist who wishes to have a Pc studio & that is the Yamaha Sw1000xg. 12 stereo tracks 144 studio quality effects (you would need 5 rack units to achieve this as they can be applied to all the channels) in realtime with no latency. An onboard 0r2 mixer, I will repeat that an onboard 0r2 mixer. Plus the best Xg synth available to date. Used by hollywood for 9 films this year. But the best part is it onlys cost £340 from simply computers. But hey don't take my expert opinion check out their site. Trust me this is the only card, plus the upgrades are unreal. http://www.xgfactory.com/ All the best Phil, oh & just to annoy everyone, the effects on the card will accurately replicate that listed gear. The only criticism I have is It aint portable.

TUBE PRICE

hey
how much do tubes cost? i want to buy a marshall dsl 401, and later replace the tubes. What are good replacement (i hear grove tubes and mesa/boogies are good). HOW ARE THEY SOLD (PACKS, SEPERATE) AND HOW MUCH DO THEY COST?

Re: TUBE PRICE

Hi,

There are 3 kinds of tubes that are used in guitar amps:
1.Preamp tubes. These "prepare" the signal to be amplified. Most common are the 12ax7. Normally you will find at least 3 in an amp but some small amps only have 1 (Fender Champ) and others will have up to 8. These run from about $6 for current European or Chinese makers to $40 for NOS(new old stock) American or English tubes.
2. Power Tubes. These amplify the signal. These come in a variety of types. Most common are EL34(Mashalls) 6L6(Fenders, Mesa) EL84(Vox, Matchless) 6V6(low wattage Fenders). There are more but I won't name them all. These usually come in pairs. 50 watts marshalls have 2 EL34's 100 watt Marshalls have 4 EL34s. They HAVE TO BE BOUGHT IN MATCHED PAIRS!!!!!!! These cost around $25 per matched pair depending on quality of tube.
3. Rectifier tube. This tube converts (rectifies) the AC signal to a DC signal. Most amps of today use a solid state rectifier. Some that use the tube are Mesa Rectifier series, Vox AC 30 and 15, almost all boutique amps.(Matchless, DrZ, Victoria etc..)

Current producers of tubes are Sovtek, Ei, JJ, Ruby, Groove Tubes. The Mesa tube is a Sovtek relabeled. Don't let them trick ya! I think the Groove Tube is, by far, the best new tube available.
Most people will agree that older tubes are better. They are built with superior parts and higher quality construction. Mullard, RCA, GE, Siemens are a few of the NOS tubes you may run across. Expect to pay up to $200 per tube for some of these.
Sovteks are a good inexpensive tube and will get the job done. Power tubes should be replaced about once a year depending on how often you play. YOU SHOULD REPLACE ALL POWER TUBES AT THE SAME TIME! Do not just change 1 of the 4. Once you get familiar with different tubes you will be able to recognize the small differences between them.
There are a couple good books around that give info on tubes. "The Tube Amp Book" by Aspen Pittman (the groove tube guy) is an excellent reference.

Hope this helps!

Re: TUBES --- E/H?

Are the new E/H tubes simply rebranded Eastern European, or are they actually manufactured by E/H?

Re: TUBES --- E/H?

EH and Sovtek are the same company.

Re: TUBES --- E/H?

Shit! That's right! Sorry, forgot... But are the ones branded E/H different in terms of production quality, or is that asking too much of the company?

Re: TUBES --- E/H?

I havent used or tested them yet but I'm sure they are similar in quality. The sovteks are probably the most consistant producer of tubes now a days. The EIs and JJ's are so inconcistant.

NEED AN AMP

im lookin for a new amp. it has to be a tube, and i need to be able to gig with it. what are some good ideas. i play rock, classic rock etc. including led zeppelin, areosmith, pink floyd, some hendrix, metallica, just over all rock an roll.

Re: NEED AN AMP

As I wrote to someone below about amps, I swear by my Fender. I've been playing guitar for about 15 years, and I think Fender amps are the best I've ever heard. (And I'm not a "Fender Guy". I only like their amps actually). As for a specific amp model, I could just say get one that has the features you want.

Get a Fender Prosonic they can do anything,.
Use an extension cab like say a Marshall 1922 and you've got big sound, lots of spread and volume.

Wanna A Whole Lotta Love

Alright, I play the Led Zeppelin song wanna a whole lotta love, accurate except the chorus. You know, "Wanna a Whole Lotta Love" then sounds like Jimmy Page is slide or using the whammy bar. Does anyone know what he's playing there?

Re: Wanna A Whole Lotta Love

He uses a slide, you play a bar chord D at the 5th fret and then up to a bar E at 7, which you hit the E chord one time, and then use the slide to slide down the neck (toward the nut). Just play the B, G, and D strings with the bar over the ninth fret and slide it down.

It's very important that you play naked & even more important to be able to play drunk. Plus you sound much better drunk. So spank that plank.

Re: Strat HM Series (Fender)

I have one, black H/S/S, DiMarzio PAF pro in bridge, I swapped the middle SC for a blue lace sensor. I like it okay, but I think I like my SG more. They are worth about nothing but are still good axes. If I were you, I'd buy one if I saw it cheap. What else do you want to know? E-mail me with some questions if you want.

thoughts on cakewalk

I have been messing around with the cakewalk guitar studio 2 demo and really like it. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if studio 9 is any good (as it is half the price)
thanks

Re: thoughts on cakewalk

I use GS2 all the time! I love it. you can burn CD's and it has great features. I can't tell you about studio 9 but if its cheaper it is most likely not as good. Second of all, go for the one that fit your needs... GUITAR studio 2. If you play guitar go for that one
