: Sorry for the caps, but this needs attention. I am going to sell my Fender DG20CE Acoustic guitar and use that money to buy a electric guitar. I figure i'll get $300 for it. I want to know if i should which i should spend more money on, an amplifier, or a pedal. I'm a Zepplin fan, so I want to play solo's like Jimmy Page. I think he uses and overdrive, but should I buy an expenisve amp that has built in distortion, or should i buy a less expensive and amp spend a more of the money on a good pedal? RSVP please!

Buy a nice guitar and amp. You can purchase lots of good guitars for under $500. Forget the pedals and buy a good amp. Pedals are cheap and you can always get them later. Good luck.

: while you may feel that your amp is too loud to record on your pc, consider recording through a mic. you'll avoid that direct to pc buzz from the ground loop problems and most mics will actually filter out some of those super high frequency ossilations of high gain amps...get a shure sm57 ..(99$) at most places, get it right up to the grill cloth. (add another mic at about 4 feet if you want a more live sound or just back the first mic away..(listen and judge) also get an adapter so you can plug the mic right into your pc.
this setup is THE pro way to record guitars!

Just like in everything, some people can do things when they are wacked out of their skulls (Jimmy Page rings a bell), and some can't.
When you get funny looks from your band mates, stop drinking for a few minutes!

I think a few bevvies can be fine when you want to practice - as long as you don't get rat-arsed and you don't do it all the time. There's something to be said for the lowering of inhibitions and a bit of relaxation on your instrument. Some of my best ideas have come out of being incoherant, but additionally I have vomited while playing and made a total mess of things. You can't have it both ways.

All up - if you're *serious* - I'd make the few drinks the exception rather than the rule. Have fun and make an occasion of it with your mates. But if you have to open a bottle just about everytime you want to jam, practice or gig I'd suggest a visit to the doctor. Alcoholism is an illness.

But from what you've outlined, I don't think you have anything to worry about.

So should you spend some time practing when slightly drunk (I do not mean get slammed just to practice). I do practice after I come in from my local pub on Friday. Thing is everyone wants to enjoy themselves, & when out a couple of pints is just the ticket. Plus has anyone played well when totally bollocked, even though they did not intend to get that way. Can it be done?

If your looking for a metallica sound you might want to try some "Mesa/Boogie" gear, it's expensive but extremly high in quality. I don't know if you've heard of rackmount gear but it's basically like seperating the power section and the preamp section ( the knobs), in to two seperate units, A 'Power amp" and a "Pre-amp". Metallica uses a Mesa/Boogie "tri-axis" Preamp, and a "Strategy 400" power amp, (400 means 400 watts of power
The strategy 400 however has been dis-continued. But just like a home stereo amplifier, there are power amps available in both mono and stereo. Mesa/Boogie newest stereo power amp is the "2/90" (that's: Two Nintey). So if you were interested in that type of sound you could use those two products. And the Triaxis Has ninety Channels!!!

If you like the pantera sound " Randall" makes some pretty kick ass amps at a pretty fuckin' low price. Check out the " RG-100 Head". It's Cheap But Insane in tone. It is a "intact" amp( the pre-amp and power amp are together as in any other head.) The RG-100 goes for about $900.00 American. And the Two Mesa units go for about $2000.00 each unit Canadian!!!!
But if you want the classic Rock sound you probably want a " tubed" amp (mesa/boogie), rather than a solid state sound like a Randall. But check them both out, it's all about personal preference, the randalls may be just what you want.

Seriously, great guitar. Versatile, but probably won't do extreme metal tones. The tele is my favorite Fender and I own strats, Jags and teles. Even the Mexican ones (try to get one that says Fender on the headstock and Squier in small letters). They jsut make 'em right almost every time.

Best Guitars in the world. The only thing you can do to improve them is stick a strat pup in the neck. If you get a good, well balanced brdige pickup (ie, Harmonic Design '54 special), you would be hard-pressed to find a better lead sound.

Great Guitars, if played through a stage 100 or cyber twin head, the most excellent sound you've ever heard and it is the most versitile thing youve ever played.
