: anyone know how I can date my SA-5 from the serial number?
You can’t because the Yamaha serial number database only keeps records of the last 10 years.
The SA-5 models where built in the years 1966-1967. They where based on the design of the Gibson ES-335. Yamaha stopped the production of this model after 1967 because of legal problems with Gibson.

I had the impression that any of the Image series that had MSG in the name were just the models for the UK market. They were the same as the other models sent overseas. I have a Image Custom with the H.I.P.S pickup system. Love it to death. I am missing a tremelo arm though. I got it 2nd hand from a hock shop regards Jon (Brisbane Australia)

Just fyi…I also have an "Image Deluxe" serial is PJ 240091 bought new here in Canada around 1992 for $1695 CDN. Had never seen one before that time and was looking for something that sounded and played great. That was the one. I have never seen or heard of another one like this in my Canadian travels. Although I originally bought the "standard " from the same store for $1495. It fell over one day and broke it’s neck:) My insurance company covered it for a $200 deductible and tried to replace it and the only place they could find another was at the same store I had bought mine a year earlier…so they are quite rare out this way. Every guitarist I have met has admired and played it and said the same thing…that it plays and sounds very good with a really mellow rich tone. Two years ago I changed the closest pickup to a Lace sensor to get it to sound a little dirtier when I was recording a CD with some blues type licks. I think I’ll change it back to the original Yamaha’s Humbucker for that sweeter tone soon. Enjoy yours! I sure do mine!

I have the same guitar… the msg was designed by a highly respected English maker, Martyn Booth. It’s a stunning guitar, and very much under rated in my opinion… it was launched during the height of "pointy headstock" fever, and hence wasn’t ever a "fashionable" guitar, and was dropped by Yamaha way too early.

Interestingly, if yours does say "image deluxe" on the truss rod cover plate, and not "msg deluxe" this indicates that the guitar did not go through the pre release checks at the factory. (mine also says image deluxe) I have spoken to Martyn Booth and he confirms that this is so. It doesn’t mean that there’s anything wrong with the guitar, but the originals said MSG deluxe, not image.

I hear that Martyn is going to hand make a new super MSG limited edition with a price tag of 2,500 pounds sterling !

      You’re got a nice guitar… enjoy !! – Tony.

I have a MSG Standard..lovely guitar in every respect. Probably the best designed guitar ever or at least up there with Gibson LPs, Yamaha SGs and PRS. Stonking guitar. Cant find much info on them (send me some :))even on HarmonyCentral, where the only reviews are for the custom and delux (image and MSG). Very nice to read Martyn Booth’s reply, what a guy. You should check out his website to see what proper guitars look like.

I found some information by contacting the guitarguru at the yamaha site. The CB818sb was made from 1979 – 1991, and sold for about $US 280 dollars new. They said it is mahogany back, sides, and neck. Spruce top and Indian rosewood fretboard. It appears to be high quality woods, but on mine the tuning keys appear to be fairly low end. I don’t know a current value.

I submitted an entry to the database on my Yamaha CJ818-SB jumbo guitar. Could you tell me a bit about yours? Did you buy it new? Mine is still a great playing guitar, and When I got it in 1985 it had been played a lot. My sister bought it for 300 in a pawn shop in San Antonio back then. It had no pickup, but I retrofitted it with a Baggs acoustic pickup.

I bought my CJ-818SB 1980 after working my first summerjob here in Finland. It cost about 1400 marks so 240$.

This is a great guitar. Once I was at the beach with my friends (heavily drinking of course)and Yamaha was with me. The poor guitar was full of sand when I woke up. She didn’t care. Actually the guitar is getting better year after year. The sound is full and rich. It’s always on tune whatever happens. I love my guitar.)

        1. I bought mine in 1982 the year it was made brand new in Great Neck Long Island for about $ 280. Well what a great investment. I put the guitar through hell and 30 years later it still plays great. Actually better than some new $1000 guitars.

Bought mine in the late 80’s . It isnt cheap lame woods as someone mentioned earlier . Sure , Yamaha had intro guitars with cheap woods but this isn’t one of those . The guitar is a beautiful tank . If it’s in damn good shape, you could probably get 500 for it or maybe a little better . I’ve seen them sell at that price around the country in shops that I see online . You could buy a solid wood guitar from China that is incredibly thin and light weight ( many big brands have a solid wood china line ) for about the same price , though it probably won’t survive long , especially if you gig . Unless youre hard up , keep it , is my opinion .

      2. Lammy
        myguitarbeatsyours

Umm, it’s a laminate top guitar. Was cheap then, is still cheap now.

Unlike some of their older models which are highly desirable as a collectible, as well as a great recording/live guitar, this model is what it is, an inexpensive lammy-top model. Even after 30 years, they still only fetch between $250-400, which is pretty lame for a guitar of that age.

Go price a Gibson, Martin, or even a solid-top Yamaha from that same period today.

Bought mine while I was in grade 11 in 1983 and it was my constant companion throughout my misspent youth. Paid about $300 Canadian with HSC at the time. Lots of beach parties, bonfires and backroad drives, so plenty of abuse. Today it can sit in the case for months at a time and when I take it out it’s still in tune and sounding better all the time. A real workhorse… hard to beat a Yamaha for $ value.

I bought a Young jin in Korea in 1991, a 12-string. Nice sunburst and sweet sound when played lightly and tuned often. The guitar shop in Korea and some folks since said it was built as a sample by an individual guitar maker trying to show his talents and wares as he applies for jobs to the larger Korean, Japanese and American companies building guitars in Korea. How do yours sound and what shape are they in?

Hey all. My mom bought an SJ 180 years ago – she can’t remember how much, but says it wasn’t much. I don’t know a lot about guitars considering I’m a beginner, but I was wondering whether all of these models would be set up to use the same gauge of strings. I’ve had the same strings for a while now and I think the sound would improve if I changed them. However, people have told me that the guitar would be adjusted to a certain type of string, so I’m not sure which to go with. Any suggestions?

P.S. Even though I’m new to guitars, this one sounds just as good as others I’ve played which are more expensive and/or newer

I’ve been shopping for used Yamaha guitars for my two boys and have gathered too much information, I hope is can be of help to some.

The SJ180 was built by Yamaha from 1981 – 1985, $210 MSRP ($495 in today’s dollars), spruce laminate top, rosewood fingerboard and bridge, mahogany elsewhere, TM-15 tuners, SJ => semi jumbo. The top-of-the-line SJ model back then was the solid-top SJ400s ($370 MSRP). They both joined the Folk series in 1981. Yamaha made their guitars in Taiwan PRC during this time.

I’ve heard that Yamaha added truss rods for easy neck setup during this era, look inside at the heel and see if there is a visible hole with hardware in it. My boys now have two beautiful, soulful FGs from this era, they both have truss rods and the neck setup only cost me $70 each. My pre-truss-rod Martin recently cost me $600 for neck setup by factory a authorized luthier.

Do not sell it. Not worth it. Keep it, get a basic guitar
book and DO NOT GIVE UP!!! Guitar playing takes literally
years ( I have been at it going on 25 now) and I am still
learning….besides it is a great deal of fun to bang on
the guitar after a hard days work!!! Not to mention going
electric with a sweet tube amp…that’s the ticket…sooothes out any rough day to nothing!!! Just don’t give up when you practice….think of people like
Rolling stones that have been playing for 50+ years…why..because it is FUN FUN FUN !!!

I bought my SJ-180 in Nashville, TN at Hewgley’s Music in ’86 or ’87. It was ‘barely used’ and I think I gave $125 for it and a cheap case. It has been my ‘knockabout’ guitar and has seen a lot of campfire and singalong use. Still looks and plays well – although it hasn’t improved in tone all that much due to the laminated top.

Glad to see all this talk about a guitar model I’ve tried to find info on for the last few years with no avail. My older brother bought a used one in the early ’80s and it is what I learned on. I was lucky to find one through a girlfreind’s freind who sold it to me for $75. Its tone has definately grown sweeter through the years. I also noticed that my brother’s (which he keeps in a closet) doesn’t sound as sweet. this could be due to his not playing much. I play it almost every day and it still sounds good even after dropping and cracking the back corner.
I have had players ask where I got it and comment on its wonderfully bright tone through the years and I’ll never sell it!!

like many of you I too can not find out about this model. I have found one on Ebay at 600+$ and saw on listed in 250 range. dont expect any dealer to give ant thing close to a good price on one. with this model you would be better advised to sell it on the open market. I bought mine new in an army PX dont remember the price in spring 1983. and many of you have said tone gets better with age. it does not compare with my guilds for folk sound but a high treble makes it great for accoustic lead and I have had players tell me they prefer it over the guilds.

I’ve had my SJ-180 since it was bought new September 1983. Like other posts, it was my first guitar too, and for a relatively cheap guitar ($129 w/case) it has developed remarkable tone over the years!! From what I remember, the music store salesman recommended it for me because it was manufactured as a "student sized" model…easy to hold and easier to get around on than a full sized dreadnaught. Anyone who owns one knows well that it is smaller than a dread but still delivers a very round warm, slightly bright tone. This is just one of those perfectly conceived & manufactured instruments that come around once in a lifetime. I also own a Larrivee’, a Taylor, & an old Alvarez, all worth over a grand each…but my my SJ-180 is the one I go for most often. It just feels perfect. I have over the years bought used ones for under $100 and given them as gifts to relatives who expressed interest in learning guitar. What else can I say, but kudos to Yamaha for this wonderfully unique instrument.

: I’ve had my SJ-180 since it was bought new September 1983.

Familiar story. My older brother bought a new SJ180 in 82, messed with it for a while, and I paid little concern to it. But then many years later I cought the acoustic guitar bug, and my wife asked my brother what happened to that old guitar he had? He made a phone call and had the guitar in my wifes hands to give to me for Christmas. That was about 12 years ago. I was bent on learning to finger pick. I put a lot of hours into it for many years while studying and learning to play. In time I learned that my mass produced budget Yamaha SJ180 was as solid and played and sounded as good or better than most other guitars that I played around with in our local music stores through the years after that. I’ll never sell my SJ180, and am extremely proud to own one.

just bought a pristine sj-180 today off of craigslist with serial #22017055 which seems to indicate, via yamaha seial # wizard that it was produced in 1982….or 1992 as the serial #s run in 10 year cycles. i am pretty sure that these guitars were produced only until 1991 which makes mine an ’82.

as for value…it’s relative, but these guitars really age well and have a clean, even, and somewhat jangly 70’s tone which i love! not many people want to give them up . i got mine for$95 with a hard case, and even equipped with a pickup which was a nice bonus. set it up with some martin medium phosphor bronze strings and the sound is clear and bright with the action easy for finger pickin’. made in taiwan but with the yamaha chrome cast tuners it stays in tune well. love this guitar and i will never sell this one.

I bought my Yamaha SJ-180 acoustic guitar new in 1979. The case is actually in decent shape. The top strings tend to “buzz” when you strike a bar chord on the 1st and 2nd frets. The truss rod has a hex end where an Allen wrench attaches. But I’m not sure if the rod is truly adjustable. I’m not a guitar technician so I’m looking for feedback from a knowledgeable person. Any suggestions?

Many years ago, a friend of mine offered me his Yamaha SJ 180 for free, and of course I accepted. At the time I was more interested in my electrics and didn’t pay much attention to it, but over the past few years I’ve been playing it nonstop. It has such a rich, warm sound, and now, whenever I go to Guitar Center to check out higher-end brands, such as Taylor or Gibson, I don’t see any compelling reason to upgrade. Grab one if you get the chance!

      Jon

I bought mine in 1982 (in UK). It cost me 125 pounds, which was more than I earned in a month at the time! The SJ range were entry level acoustics, and the sj180 was the top end. The cheapest one was about 70 quid and didn’t have the same smooth action and tonal qualities (a maye of mine had one and it looked identical, but was far rougher).
I’ve often wondered if its worth anything, because the guitar gets better as it gets older. Professional musician friends of mine who have played it really like it, and place it in the mid range of decent guitars (just below an Ovation!)

I just picked up a used SJ-180 yesterday for 89.00 at a guitar shop here in MD. The moment I picked it up and started playing it I fell in love with it’s tonal quality. An excellent bargain, as far as anything worthy of the history of this guitar, I am about as stumped as the rest of you.

Hi…If this is the FG-335 II guitar you have a great guitar there. The FG-335 II(must have the II) Is one of the finest acoustic guitars ever made in its price range. They were made approx. from 1977- 1981 and the design and wood gives this guitar a full bass & midrange sound. The projection is superb. They sell on Ebay for between $150-$200 I have had 5 and still have 3 of them. If it does not have the II it is not the same guitar. Big difference.

I bought my 1981 Yamaha FG335e from someone who lives in the wilds of northern Vermont in 2016. I just put a new K&K Pure Mini in it. This guitar is…amazing. All of my musician friends play it and they are stunned at how it feels and sounds. I feel pretty darn lucky that I found it. The comments here do not surprise me. I played a Martin HD-28 at a store and thought it was pretty incredible, but, oddly enough, I love my Yamaha more and didn’t feel that need you get when you play a great guitar that you just have to have it.

I have a Yamaha FG335E that I bought new in Lubbock, TX in 1981 or 82. It is now December 2018…it still has the mellowest, full sound I have ever heard. Over the years, when I was playing semi-professionally, I kept looking for a better guitar of a reasonable price to purchase. I couldn’t find one at twice the price that had as good a sound. Besides, my wife wouldn’t allow me to use another guitar. I think I paid about 140.00 for it. Hard to accept that it is worth only about what I paid originally. Great accoustic/electric.

I bought mine from a guy in 1983 poolside at an apartment complex we once lived at. Paid $175.00. Out of all my guitars, my FG335-E still has the best overall tone, action, intonation and ease of playing. Aside from the electronics being a bit tinny, when I mic it into my studio it just shines. Can’t believe these things aren’t worth more. Just gets better with age.
But, like you have found, they ‘say’ they are worth about 200-300. Doesn’t matter – I’ll never ditch mine anyway.

I have a Yamaha SA-50 "335" that I just got from my father-in-law. He bought it new and never had a chance to play it before shipping off to Vietnam. Once he got back he lost interest so in it’s case it’s sat for the past 40 years. Anyways, I’m interested in selling it. Dark Green in color.

I have a Yamaha FG-180 thats about 30 years old. I have no idea what its worth. It has a V neck and the metal yamaha insignia with the tuning forks at the top of the neck. The label on the inside says "YAMAHA FG-180 Nippon Gakki" Could someone please give me some info?

      Isaac,
I too have a Yamaha FG-180 that my mom bought for me back in ’70. It’s been through thick and thin and while I’ve bought and sold all sorts of guitars since then, this one has stuck with me. I’ve got Bo Diddley’s autograph as well as Jimmy Rogers’ (of Muddy Waters fame)and a few others right on the body. It’s pretty beat up but I love it. I’ve got no idea what FG-180s are worth. I haven’t seen them on E-Bay and it appears they’re not being made anymore.
Sorry I can’t give you any info, but I thought you might like hearing from another owner/fan.

: can anybody tell me anything about a fg450sa.i know it has a solid top.. thanks

The FG 450 SA is a wonderful guitar made my Yamaha with inlay around the pickgaurd, snowflake inlays on the frets, solid high-quality spruce top. I have had mine for about 8 years and it has aged beautifully, with a very balanced tone and more than pleasing volume. The bass notes aren’t quite as heavy as one would expect from say a Martin, but with a little action adjustment it will quickly become one of your favorite flatpicking, strumming, or fingerpicking guitars.

      1. Yamaha FG-450sa
        Monkey

Just bought a used one and it is in splendid condition. I have owned several higher end martins but found the necks to be too wide. This yamaha model has alot of nice features like the snowflake inlays and bound fingerboard. The abalone inlay around the soundhole and the dove on the headstock are equally nice. The neck is perfect for my hands and the sound is bright and full. I noticed as well that the bass notes don’t boom lke the martins do but I payed $350 bucks for this thing as compared to > $2,000 for all the martins i’ve owned. I’d say that if you can pick one of these up .. go for it. For the money, i’m not going to lose sleep if i ding it here and there and it sounds wonderful!!!

I bought mine new in 1979. I’ve had dozens of accoustics through the years but this has been my main electric axe since then. As an active part-timer, it has played in the low 1000’s of gigs. It’s transparent cherry sunburst and I’ve not seen another (in any color) since then. It has played rock, country, jazz and early 60’s R&B… The numerous on-off-reverse-phase switch combinations makes for all kinds of guitar tones. The only place Ive seen any mention of it has been on this page and at the Yamaha Data base site http://www.yamaha.co.jp/product/guitar/eg/database/index.html
It still works fine, looks great, can’t understand why they quit making them either.

      I have one!

I’ve had it since new and it’s the one guitar I would never and could never sell!

It’s in a natural finish, and it’s the best guitar I have ever owned. It’s probably done in excess of 2000 gigs and only let me down once, when the jack socket wore out – perhaps not surprisingly..

I have never touched the truss rod, and the neck is still remarkably straight. No wonder Yamaha stopped making them.. they were too good!

The sound is fantastic – it has blade pickups, which went completely out of style, but are now coming back in!

I’ll try to take a piccie of it if you want..

      Regards

      Yan.

      1. Yamaha SC1200
        YantheMan

I bought mine new in 1979 and would never sell it. The construction was unique: The neck / centre body is on 5 pieces. The two dark stripes are for decorative purposes only but crucially, the centre piece was cut from the same piece of wood as the two outer pieces BUT, was reversed before all 5 pieces wereglued together and then shaped. This was in order to offset any tendancy for the wood to twist or warp. I can only say it works brilliantly because the neck on mine is millimetre straight after all these years and the truss rod has never been touched. The two wings were then shaped and glued onto the centre 5-piece body/neck.

The pickup arrangement is also unique and though it has caused a lot of confusion and questioning, is actually quite simple. The switches are one for each pickup, (which I will call B, M & N, (you can figure that out for yourselves!)). The B switch switches the Bridge pickup, (get it now?), the M pickup switches the Middle pickup etc. The important thing to note is that both the B and the M switches are 3-way whereas the N switch is only 2-way. The reason for this is that both the B & M switches are configuered – Down = pickup on, Middle = pickup off and Up = Pickup on but out of phase. There is not need for the N switch to have an out of phase option because the other two already have it.

So there you have it. Yamaha at the time claimed that the SC1200 could select no less than 18 different pickup combinations. I haven’t counted but realstically, there are 4 or 5 really useful sounds in there including B & N pickups, (try THAT on a Strat!) and of course all 3 pickups on at the same time. It also has one possible pitfall – You can select all three pickups Off and get total silence! Yes, I’ve done it live…

Lastly, the ‘varnish’ is made from a derivative of the Cashew nut and is astonishingly hard-wearing. Don’t bother to lick it; I’ve tried that and couldn’t taste and Cashew nut!

I hope this helps and explans a few things about this remarkable guitar; one Yamaha should reintroduce without delay. ‘Beat Instrumental’ magazine, (no longer published), once said of the SC1200; ‘It out-Strats the Strat in every department. I have several Strats but I have to say this has quite the sweetest tone of them all.

My ’78 SC1200 is mint, though the original hard case is pretty ratty, but 30+ years old. I too can’t find info on this guitar. I’d like to know market value, track serial number for factory birth place, etc.
My Fender Strat and Gibson SG just sit in the corner since this “Pawn Shop Find”.
Still trying to figure out the toggle switch combination but it has tremendous sustain and rarely needs tuning!
As the Monkeys said. “I’m a Believer”

        1. I have had mine for about 12 years now. I actually had to write Yamaha Japan to find out anything about it. Yamaha USA was no help other than providing with the contact in Japan. It was built between 1977-1980! They said that market value THEN was about $1,000-$1,200 USD (based upon the exchange rate). It is consider their Top of the Line Super Combination Series of guitars. While I do not have the original factory hard case, I have babied mine since I have had it. I WOULD NEVER SELL IT!! I have seen the online for as little as $600 USD and as much as $1000 USD. I keep my eye out on them for insurance purposes! I got mine in a pawn shop for little of nothing (because, the dealer couldn’t prove what it was worth).

Yahama JPN is very proud of this piece as it was built during a time when the Fender Strat and Gibson Les Paul were extremely dominate. The SC1200 was like the best of both worlds. Adding a great BTN design on a “Strat-like” frame with LP functionality. Contact me at Hotmail, if you desire anything else. Subject Yamaha SC-1200.

I have a 521 (1989)which i have had for 7 years, i would not sell this guitar for anyother as i think nothing else touchs it. I have 2 fenders and another Pacifica 812 which are good but the 521 just wants to be played,it can shread like a motherfuck and also give a smooth jazz tone (very clean and very warm). So the answer to your question is, its a gem of a guitar but thier not worth more than 3-400 english pounds.

I’ve still got one of those dunno bout sellin’ though. They’re hard to come by. I bought it beacuse it was the best machine I could find and at the time I was not concerned about the price ($300).
It has a terrific action and is best fitted with high guage strings for the best sound. If you have one of these then either keep it let someone with high base requirements buy it. It is a beeaauutifull machine !!!

            jim w

Bought my 470 new, many years ago. The tone has mellowed to "wow" and its still solid as a rock. The thing is a gem. Use medium Martin silk and steel on mine. I’ve played Taylor, Gibson, Ovation, and Martin. Other guitars come and go but the Yamaha stays. I agree with the rest — dont sell, you’ll only regret when you cant find anything out there that sounds the same.

: It has a terrific action and is best fitted with high guage strings for the best sound. If you have one of these then either keep it let someone with high base requirements buy it. It is a beeaauutifull machine !!!

I too own one, I got it for $400 with a $100 case, but I have no clue when it was made. Do you happen to know?

I have one of these guitars, made in 1985, just sits in the corner, would consider a sale if a good offer came my way, next to impossible to find any and all info on this instrument, but from all the reviews and threads I have researched, I have learned that it is a great guitar and am warned to never sell it, too hard to replace I read 🙂

My cousin traded me a Wilson golf driver for his FG-345 back in the early 80’s, he bought it new and was taking some lessons but never stuck with it so it was going to waste sitting around. I didn’t do much with it either until recently decided to take lessons again. I had my instructor who is also a Guitar Technician (his job is to fix guitars) tuned it up for me. He has since offered to buy it from me 3 different times. He said the body cavity was rosewood and sounded fantastic. He also said my guitar made an F# sound when you thumped the body. So my take is if my instructor wants it really bad, it must be good. My cousin got rid of the driver I gave him about 15 years ago.

Can i just say, i was given this guitar by my dad 8 months ago. It has sat for 21 years, aged beautifully and once i adjusted the truss and re-stueng it with elixr custom lights, it sounds gorgeous. great attack, easy for fingerstyle, deep bass and bright mellow trebles. i have built into it the fishman rare earth blend. I recently was shopping for a taylor 310e and am sticking with this, nuff said.

Those were manufactured in the 10 year span from 1971 to 1981. Orginal price of $300 was an absolute steal for the quality and tone of this particular instrument. I wouldn’t sell mine for twice the manufacture price today as it’s value will only continue to increase.

These guitars seem to have a strange hold on people, everyone raves about them but yet no one seems to have one. I purchased mine 6 years ago in a pawn shop for $120 bucks and I convinced the guy to throw in a song book too. I cleaned it up, adjusted the truss rod and am yet to find a better guitar within $600 of the price. I have had many offers for it, but can not seem to let it go. Mine is a 1977, ironicly the same year I was born. I have seen a couple go across ebay, usually around $200, give or take 50. To me, its worth 3 times that, and if you have one in good shape I suggest hanging on to it. In 20 more years I can see these guitars selling near $1000. (My opinion)

My dad purchased this guitar in the late seventies and I learned how to play on this guitar. I have played literally hundreds of acoustics and for the price of the fg 345, you can’t beat it. I don’t know how much they are worth today, but for the quality they have to be a steal. With the right strings, this quitar has a great full sound to it.

I bought my yamaha 345 back in 1980, and have owned several guitars, both acoustic and electric, before and since. My friend has an old Martin, and he said that my yamaha sounds better and plays better, and I agreed. I put a Martin thinline pickup in about 20 years ago, had the truss rod adjusted, and I wouldn’t trade her for anything.

I bought one of these in 1977 give or take a few years. It retailed for $250.00 then and is a very good guitar. It’s very easy to chord. Has a nice sound. I wish I still had mine. I consider it very easy to learn on and of high quality.

      Rock!
The Yamaha SG feels more like a contoured Les Paul than an SG,is pretty basic looking, has powerfull pick-ups and is built like a tank! I like the way that the selector switch is located by the volume/tone control, all round it has a different feel to the other yamaha models,in fact if you like the "500" then you probely wont like the other models in the range.

p.s,The "500" was produced up untill about 5-6 years ago,I know this because I own a music shop and I bought mine from Yamaha-Kemble myself!

      1. Re: YamahaSG 500

: Heavier is not alway better. The heavier the guitar the wood the lower down the tree, the more compressed and hence the duller it will sound. Ideally mid-weight provides the best sustain.

: : Does anyone own a Yamaha SG500, if so what’s it like?

: Had one for a while. It’s a nice double-cutwaway guitar, but now I have a Yamaha SG 1500 and it’s much better. It is a lot heavier, which means you have better sustain. The neck is also a little better. If you’re looking for a Yamaha SG, my advice is wait until you find a SG 1500 or SG 2000. They’re a lot better guitar than the SG-500. I paid $400 for my SG-1500 and it’s worth it. I wasn’t satisfied with the SG-500.

This guitar is made in Japan in years from early 1970’s – 80’s. It was then discontinued. I have one and it looks similar to a Gibson SG but better !!. The sound quality is great. The price was great. If you are trying to find one good luck. Many who had the guitar usually keep it for its sound quality and durability. Hope you have a strong shoulder caue its quite heavy. One remedy is to use a wide strap !! I have no complaints about this guitar. I Have one the only change I have made is i have changed the pick ups to seymour duncan pick ups just for personal change. This is a great testiment to japanese know how in creating such a good musical instrument

    Hi,

I’m looking for information on a guitar I bought around 1978. It’s a Yamaha FG-1200J. I was told at the time that it was "hand finished"? It is a nice sounding guitar with abalone inlay on the fingerboard, around the body, and between the sections of the 3-piece back. Would like date and any pricing info available.

    Thanks,

    Scott

I own the same guitar, bought it new in about ’78 after I quit playing electric. I found that it had a nice action and that it’s narrow neck made the transition pretty easy.

If you find any info let me know.

      Thanks

      P.S.
I am actually having a hard time finding a newer model that sounds better.

        1. Re: Yahama FG-1200J
          George

FG-1200J was considered one of the high end models. It is not technically described as hand made. For example FG1500 and FG2000 is hand made by a specific luthier from the beginning to the end. The list price of 1200J when first introduced in Japan in 1974 was roughly $1000. It’s got a solid spruce top, solid jacaranda side and back, and ebony fingerboard. Jacaranda guitars are no longer available and therefore the current comparable model use Indian rosewood instead at a price of $2200.

The serial number can be found on the horizontal brace under the top just north of the sound hole. In other words, look in the hole towards the neck and you should see the number stamped on the brace facing you.

Hi The Japanese were excellent and very exacting with regards to copying American Instruments(Martin d-28/Gibson) back then. The craftsmanshipt and speceifications are really on the money. So it appears the fg series are copies of a certain models, not sure as of yet of all of them because I’ ve only played the fg 110. Alas my question to yourself… could you tell me the nut width and perhaps the scale length as well as the neck shape. Curious as to whether or not its a "V" neck.
