Re: Learning How to Play the Guitar?
: Hello...
: Can anyone give me pointers or hints on how to play lead guitar. I guess I should start with the scales but I can't find any site that has a straight forward discussion on scales and on how to use them. Also, I am having a hard time playing by ear, meaning, I can't play a song or tune just by listening to it I still need to have the cords of the song at hand before I can play the song. Is there any technique on this or is it just a god given gifts?
: Thanks in advance for your help!

: I'm just curious....how much do you know about chords? In my opinion, it makes more sense to learn chords and how to use them, than to start with playing lead. Most theory books are unnecessarily complicated, though.Your sense of pitch can be developed. Some people have more natural ability than others, or seem to.I think it is a waste of time to concentrate on modes, gear, lead playing without spending time on the two most important things:Your SENSE OF PITCH and your SENSE OF TIMING.I've had students who knew modes, extended chords, etc.but couldn't play a 3 chord song in time, and had no hope of tuning their guitar without an electronic tuner. What's wrong with this picture? In my opinion, most guitar instruction methods are focusing on the wrong things. There are books on Ear Training, and David Burge's Perfect Pitch Course is invaluable;a metronome is a big help with rhythms.

Re: Washburn A20V
I used to own a very nice A20V. This was the topof the line of the A-Vseries. It had a neck through design for excellent sustain. Rosewood fingerboard that looked like ebony and double humbucking pick-ups were standard on this model. I truely loved the triangular shape of the neck and the style is still over the top by todays standards! I wih that I hadn't sold it, but what ya' gonna do?

Re: Tatay Guitars
My Dad bought his Valencian Tatay in London in 1958. He had learnt to play the guitar whilst a prisoner of war in Colditz. I remember him playing the Bach Chaconne or the Moonlight Sonata on his Tatay. I played it at his funeral four years ago. I have had it refretted, for the original frets were never good enough. The notes now speak clearer with less effort. I own a wonderful Southwell concert guitar, but that Tatay, with its rough and ready construction, yet unsurpassed for beauty and warmth of tone, goes with me everywhere.....

: I have one also - it was my dad's. Has to be at least 40 years old. In perfect condition.
Gretch USA

Old Gretch Chet Atkins Nashville Guitar
I have an old Gretch Nashville guitar that I am trying to date. It is a hollow body guitar with the holes cut out. Most that I have seen have just fake holes. These are actually cut out and the guitar is alomost an orange red color. Do you have any idea how old this guitar might be? Thanks

Re: Who's tone(s) do you emmulate, and how do you go about getting it
Right now I'm trying to emulate Carlos Santana, Eric Clapton & John Fogarty. I play a Strat Plus with Lace Sensors through a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe tube amp. I keep my tuner and a Boss OS-2 Distortion Pedal in line all the time. I am finding that by using the overdrive of the amp and the Boss Pedal, I can get a solid, punchy overdrive sound, good for Santana and a lot of other music. Also there are many variations I can get with the controls on the amp and the controls on the pedal. The clean side of the amp, without the pedal gives me a clean sweet sound, good for Fogarty. I don't play metal, so I don't know much about that.
You talked about "playing in the pocket". I have a vague idea what you mean, but I'm not sure. It sounds like coming through at the right time, not stepping on the singer or other players, not trying to show off, etc. Maybe you can elaborate a little.
Also, I recently picked up a Roland BC60 which was sounding muddy and distorted until I realized you can't overdrive the input too much. I'm still experimenting with the controls.

Re: Whammy bar won't fit
: It's always possible that you do not have the right bar, or that it is faulty. The thread spacing might be different.
: Just to give it one more try, first check that it is not a left handed thread, which would screw in anti clockwise intead of the usual clockwise. Unlikely but possible.
: In any case, line the threaded part of the bar up with the hole, and while gently pressing it in, slowly turn the bar in the opposite direction to the direction that would screw it in. When you feel a slight click, you know you have found the end of the thread, so immediately reverse direction and it should screw in. If this doesn't work your bar doesn't match your bridge, or one of them has a damaged thread. If the bar's thread is damaged this should be visible, perhaps with some magnification. You might be able to fix it with a small file. If it's the hole that's the problem it would need to be retapped. Good luck.

Re: What would happen if I put my sisters cat in my Line 6 FTII-XL and cranked it ?
wow your sick, just put orange peels on the amp, they hate oranges, you sick fuck
Re: Buzzing AMP
I'd say it's the dimmers. If you go to a studio you'll notice that any wall dimmers are those huge (expensive) ones with a giant rheostat (sp?). The little dinky ones you buy at Lowes and Home Depot are very noisey. Sometimes they have a click stop that takes the rheostat out of the circuit.
Rather than go to a studio, just go to another room, on a different circuit of course, and see if it works there. Or run an extension chord.
Now, back to my search for how to get the buzz out of my new LP pickups! When I touch the pickup the noise goes away.: :Probably not, what you are more than likly hearing is called AC line noise and is usually caused by a faulty ground or earthing in the electrical wiring. Here is a simple test: If your amp has a three prong plug on it and the wall outlet is only a two prong type, then you need an adapter to plug it up, right? Ok on most adapters there is a metal loop or a wire with a metal clip on it, take a long enough wire to go from the wall outlet to a gas pipe or a water pipe, tie the wire tight to the pipe (a hose clamp or vicegrips is good here) and tie the other end to the plug adapter loop or wire. Pipes usually go into the ground at some point and this will make a temporary groung for the test. If the wall outlet is a three prong type and not grounded, connect the wire to the green screw on the back of the outlet. You will need to take the plug outlet out of the wall to do this, so be sure to turn off the electricity to that plug before removing the screws that hold it in the wall. If at all possible try to plug the amp into an outlet that is not on the same circuit as the lights, this is a problem with that kind of lighting. If you want to e-mail me I will explain in more detail how you can ground a few plugs and save some money on doing the whole house. [email protected]
: I noticed in the manual it actually says dont use on the same circuit as "vairable lighting". I borrowed a marshall amp and a washburn guitar and it did the sasme thing so it's definately the electrics in my house rather than the amp.
: : Will a shielded lead actually stop this as it sounds like the interferance is coming through the power lead of the amp.
