According to Vintage Guitar Price Guide 2008 these are worth about $550-625 in excellent condition (no repairs and all-original).
I don’t know about vintage value, but i haven’t been able to find one for less than $450 since i got mine. if you do get it make sure it looks good otherwise it is priceless. I know my malibu sounds fantastic (and i mean sounds very very good), looks perfect, and draws everyone to want it. so good luck
: I have a chance to get my hands on a 1965? fender malibu acoustic.. is it valuable as vintage? i’ve seen and played it and the action is killer!! seller wants 500.00. paid 800.00. been playing guitars a long time..not familiar with this one..please advise!! thank you.. tony m flores
Don’t pay it! Even if it’s pristine. They are cool guitars but have more of a nostalgia value. They have no vintage value. They were made from 65 I think (63?) until around ’71. If you look around you can find one for around 200.00. Hope this helps.

I HAVE A FENDER MALIBU 1965 AND IF IT PLAYS LIKE MINE, I WOULD BUY IT IN A HEART BEAT!!!! IT IS NICE WITH THE STRAT NECK AND MAKES IT REAL EASY TO SWITCH BACK AND FORTH TO A STRAT ON STAGE. I USE THE SAME SIZE STRINGS ON BOTH.
Vintage Guitar Magazine’s Price Guide, which is one of the more respectable guides in publication, shows 1965-1970 Fender Maibu’s as being valued between $450 and $650 in VG – Excellent Condition.
The early CBS Fender acoustics are commonly viewed as having no vintage value because they were horrible sounding in comparison to same-era Martin’s and Gibson’s.
The reality is that the factors that define an instrument as vintage, desireable, collectable, etc. constantly change with the morphing landscape of instrument production and the passage of time.
10 years ago, there are those who scoffed at the collectability or vintage nature of 60’s Japanese guitars. There is now a tremendous surge in the vintage market for these guitars.
I’d say if its clean, good condition, structurally sound, and you like it’s sound and playability, $500 is a sound price.
One thing you might look for, is if it has an aluminum pipe inside. The early Fender acoustics all had these for some reason, with the exception of the first 200-300 produced (acording to George Gruhn). If it’s missing the pipe, commonly referred to as the "water pipe", then I’d say it’s probably more valuable than if it has one.
An instrument is only as valuable as what someone is willing to pay for it.
I have a Fender Malibu with the number 5714096 inside the body. I think its constructed of Tiger Maple on sides and back with a sunburst design on a Spruce flatfront. It has french ivory trim. Any information with regards to history, year of manufacture and value is welcome and appreciated.

With that number, it’s probably quite late, according to my research. Other ways to tell are by the Fender Logo on the headstock. If the lettering is gold it is pre-1967. The transition to black lettering was made in 1967. Also check to see if there are one or more patent numbers underneath the logo. Earlier guitars said “PATS PENDING”. Later guitar listed one or more patent numbers. Next check inside for the city of manufacturing. Earliest Malibu’s were made in Anaheim, California, with production soon moving to nearby Santa Ana. Next check the shape of the saddle. Earlier models were squared. Later models were wider and moustache shaped. Lastly look at the pick guard. Earlier models were thinner and all one colour. Later models were thicker with a white band visible around the edge. I have a very early Malibu, probably 1965, with all the earlier features and a serial number 02501 on the chrome back plate. Hope this helps.

IF ANYONE OUT THERE CAN FIND ME A MALIBU (OR PALOMINO, OR EVEN A MONTARA) FOR AROUND $200, I’D LOVE TO HEAR FROM THEM. THIS IS SERIOUS ! Thanks, Rich
I love my ’66 Fender Malibu. It’s the hangin’ around the house guitar; an easy player with a nice sound. It isn’t a Gibson or Martin, but it was only $350.00 plus the cost of some initial set up repairs. It is suspended by a vintage Tupper and Reed Music cloth strap (you know?) and after growing some mutton chops and learning a few Country Joe tunes it’ll be a great retro act!
In the Malibu the aluminum rod is a short cylinder that provides strength between the neck and the block. In the bigger models it is a long rod between the neck block and the end block, put there to keep them from imploding! I think the Malibu is the best of all the Roger Rossmeisel designed Fender acoustics. The earliest models have the gold sprayed plexi pickguards that look like vintage Rickenbacker pickguards.
Malibus were actually played by Johnny Cash, Joan Baez and Ray Davies, maybe as endorsements, but they sure seem to show up in quite a few gigging pix. As a previous poster commented, everyone who plays on it ends up liking it.
I think the collecting value will rise on these guitars, and I’d rather look at and play on a cool, fun vintage guitar with historical value than one that is designed to appear to have that cache.

I bought one 2 years ago from my neighbor and I had a new nut put on it,and the neck straightened. It sounds good for what it is. My neighbor paid $450 new.

I just read about this guitar, i bought one today from a freind who owned it and never learned to play it. its a fender la brea, with a strat like key setup, all six on one side, cut away design, a volume and a tone knob, paid $200, i just liked it and had to have it, if you’ve any info on it let me know
The LeBrea is Korean Made 1987-1992 and came in Black and natural wood. The neck and head stock are Stratocaster style. The body is standard dreadnaught with a cut away. They went for about $400-450 new. I have had mine since 94 and still love it. The original passive pickup was crap. I replaced mine with a fishman premium blend and I love the sound. It has been a durable, dependable, fun guitar that is still easy on the eyes even after 13 years of traveling and being bumped around. I am keeping mine.
I bought mine in 1987 at an Air Force BX in Germany. Fantastic guitar, still have it, still play it once in a while. Extremely durable, very fast action, bright sound. It’s amazing how much I learned playing it and even more so to think I play a lot of barres. The electronics do suck, though.
oh yeah, I paid $450.00 in 1987.
Hi Guys I owned a labrea 17 yrs ago. I loved it. However, the pick up was screw and i changed it to a fishman’s. Paid about Singapore dollars $700 in 1988. Still sounds great!
my fender le brea i got it for $170.00 great sound found out it was worth around $800.00

There is currently one on Ebay, 4 days left, price is now 305.00, looks really sharp, black. Only one there is you do a Fender La Brea search.

My my bought me one (with a 2 speaker craft amp) for our wedding. Around 2-3 months after we moved to Australia it was stolen out of the car (Only in there for a short time…but it was enough). I miss that guitar. Very nice sound for the price. Nice slim neck. Cot around $450 or so new back in 92.
There is a Fender LaBrea, Black, at Guitar Crazy in Portland Oregon for around $225. Seems like a reasonable price for a good sounding, slightly odd looking guitar.

I got my LaBrea in 1987 new for $275 in Philadelphia (either Zapf’s or 8th street music, can’t recall).
I put Martin Silk and Steel strings on it, and I get tell you that no other acoustic guitar is as playable. I’ve played Martins, I’ve got a Taylor 314, and a Godin 5th Avenue.
This guitar is unreasonably good at this price point. They’re selling for around $500 on eBay now which is still reasonable to me considering how well they play.
Bought my labrea in 1988 still have it not a bad guitar
I’m selling a La Brea where to do it best?
Kind regerds,
Gianni
Hi guitar-fan-boys,
I come from Finland.
I Bought Black La Brea in 1994. Guitar was used (second hand) and electronics was not working at the time.
There was a slight dent on the 14th fret in the upper-E-string, which luckily was only noticable when bending that position. So it was no PRIMA – that’s for sure 🙂
Guitar cost 1500 Finnish Marks, and that time it ment 357 americanos dollares 🙂
I really liked it’s big body, and the solo groove made it easy to play even the highest frets.
Black finish also looked cool – at that time we had in Finland almost monopoly of natural finish acustics. I still don’t feel attraction towards them.
What model I really like to get my hands on, is a Gibson Hummingbird. We have one in town at the moment, but it costs 2400 euros comes to 3004 USD..
I have a La Brea I bought in the late 90’s for $300. It was supposed to come with a custom case but the guitar shop in Burlington, WA screwed me and “lost” the case prior to my picking up the guitar. There were 5 models of the La Brea series with prices ranging from around $350 up to nearly $600. The most expensive one had a spruce top and flame maple sides and back.
Just picked up one yesterday for $200 Canadian all maple how is the maple cap over spruce or is that photo Flame on Spruce

Saw one of these for sale recently and was curious about the sound quality and its value. Hollow body bass, completely bound including F holes. Sort of green mint/mist color, 2 (single coil?) pickups. Is this a good or great bass? Asking price is $650. Any opinions out there? Thanks.
I like mine and think it’s worth more. However, I’m trying to sell mine too, right now. The problem is that no one knows about this great bass.

Hi:
I own a 1968 Fender Coronado Bass II which I purchased new in Boston. I am a former instructor at Berklee. It is lousy for hard rock, but if you want as close to "upright" as you can get, put nylon strings on it and you fool 90% of the population, especially on the lower end. It has the original pickups, but I had to redo the pots about a year ago. I shaved the frets off about 15 years ago and I would not trade it for anything. The only thing I wish is that it has a 5th string!I use it for recording and play in a small jazz quartet.
Thanks, Jim

I just came home with an f-35 today that I bought from a friend. I am having the same problem nailing down a date of manufacture. All I can find is that it is a solid spruce top, obankole back and sides, and retailed for $225. Date range that I keep seeing is 72-81. My serial number starts with F 78, so maybe it was made in 78?? Good luck with your search!

The Fender F35 was made in Japan during the late 70’s and early 80,s. I bought one in Germany in 80 for about $230.00 with the case. I still have it and have had no troubles with it. They are well built guitars but have been acused of being a copycat of the D45 Martin.

Hi
Could anyone give me advice on where to get replacement tuning heads for my f35
Thanks
Interesting thread. I have had a F-3 also for around 35 years, picked up somewhere in London as a student, probably off charing cross road. It was terrible for some years, with a high action, until a minor restoration for a few quid in the 90s, which turned it into a lovely little machine. I have ignored it for a decade or two, but finally my daughter has picked it up. It has a robust sound, not particularly sweet, but its assertive and full of character. Serial no appears to be 10205. Its travelled far enough now to seamlessly move on to a third generation. If an acoustic instrument plays ok for a time, its always loved.
I have a F35. Supposedly they were made from 72-81. Since the serial number on mine starts with an “83”, I guess that blows the theory of the first 2 digits representing the year made.
Just got a f 35 but the label has no serial Numbers and no reverb strip down the back also no truss rod. Have I been taken? If anyone knows the answer please let me know soon so I can return it. Posted 7/8/19
Had a F-35 since I was young. Simply my favorite possession… Gift from my mother. Sold it for heroin. That was 6-7 years ago. I am clean now for 5 years. I lost a part of my heart and some of my soul that dreadful day. Have learned a lot since then… Patience, forgiveness, and most importantly, love. God bless you all. If anyone knows about a Fender F-35 in the Northeast of Pennsylvania that is for sale, would you kindly let me know? I’d love to buy another one.
Hey my name is Crystal from Boger City Pawn in NC. I just saw your post while looking up a guitar we just purchased. It is a Fender F35 with a case, it is a older asian model with #7211 9 serial#. If your interested you can reach us Mon-Fri 9-6pm at (704)736-1192.
I have an original model f35. I improved the sound by removing the broken bridge element and made a new one out of a half of a brass hinge and replaced the nut. I then restrung it, cleaning and setting the fingerboard as action was a little too high for me. This was able to be done because I made them new bridge element to accept shimming to get it just high enough to work while being easy to play as my fingers are a little weak due to diabetes.
I’m not by any means ‘a luthier’
I have a fender f35 in beautiful vintage condition color really nice real dark top. serial 7211. I bought it in late 72/73 used. Tuners were replaced with good Grovers and strap pins before I acquired it. Very solid hard light brown case with a yellowish silver plush lining. I am now 62years old. I have gone through a lot of guitars and have some that cost me 10x more than the f35 cost, but this guitar has a high dollar sound and why I still have it. Anybody have an idea the value.
I was told the F-35 now sells for around $200.
I think that’s what I payed for mine in 1972?
I have an F-35 from ’79, serial 7949732. It is older than me!! Given to me from my dad as I play more often than he does! It still sounds wonderful and rarely needs re-tuning! It struggles abit with Muse/Foo Fighters, but feels at home with Dire Straits/Pink Floyd!!
I bought it for $100 shipped on ebay, when it arrived I filed the bridge to make the action where I like it with the slack-key tuning I use (DADEBE), it’s about the same as my D-35 after I put 10 Martin guage strings on. I cleaned it up – frets/finish with Martin guitar polish, and tuned it. It plays as good as anything I’ve played.
When the humidity is about 50% it is perfect (tuning and action) all the way to the top fret, no buzzes, and very clean harmonics. When the humidity gets above 65% the tuning goes off a bit above the 10th fret, at lower humidity it will start to buzz above the 12th fret, so for studio work it must be kept around 50% humidity – 75 [deg] F. I have used it in the studio with more than acceptable success.
I like it for slack key work, even more than my D-35 (which cost me $12 k), I don’t use it for regular tuning though, as the neck bends/twists a little more than I like, even with the 10 guage set. If you know how to set up a guitar, and you keep it in a temperature/humidity controlled environment it is a very good guitar to play, and has a decent tone.
I have this guitar forever. I keep it in the case and play it a couple times a week. So cool looking because the lacquer has yellowed so much. Sounds great. Perfect neck set – plays smooth and fast. I love the “V” neck!
I have a Martin D16, a Dobro and a couple other acoustics. This one is a keeper. Very well built – very balanced. They don’t make ’em like this anymore.
End result:
Not for sale. Ever.
I have had mine since the mid 70’s. It’s an early model.
Top: Spruce
Back and sides: Obankole in walnut finish
I love this guitar and it compares to anything I have found (though not quite like a high-end Taylor).
Mine has seen much playtime over the 40 odd years I’ve had it. I’ve about worn it out. It’s been re-fretted in the last few years and I’m wearing it out again. I put a LRBaggs pickup in it and it sounds great. I’m just having buzzing fret issues on the low and high e strings 5 and 7th frets respectively. I am much tempted to snatch one of these few remaining gems up before they’re all gone. Provided I find A good one. Review? They’re old, mine was Korean, later they were Japanese. Quality select Obankole wood, great tone and great craftsmanship. Warning, because they’re used and each one different, try before you buy if $100 means much to you. Otherwise enjoy. 5 0f 5 guitar picks!
Here’s the description from http://www.philsfenders.com/f-35.html
The Dreadnought size guitar. Rich, full-bodied sound. Top of natural finish Spruce. Sides and back of select Obankole wood in walnut finish. Eight piece dark binding and pin type bridge. Neck of satin finish Mahogany with Rosewood fingerboard and adjustable truss rod. Individually enclosed machine heads. 20 frets; 25½ inch scale. 40¾ inches long, 16 inches wide, 4 7/8 inches deep.
I have one which has seen better days. It needs new strings, machine heads and a few frets and maybe the neck needs adjustment. I am no expert.
It is free to a good home if you live in the UK (Kent) and don’t mind picking it up.
What a terrific guitar!
this guitar is 34 years old, sounds amazing, plays perfect and is very close to a Martin D45.
Interestingly enough – my Martin D18 (1979) needs a neck reset because the neck set has dropped – which is a common Martin problem with their guitars from the 1960’s through the 1980’s.
The Fender F35?… Perfect. Like the day it was new. I will never sell it.
I bought my F-35 model Fender guitar in early 1980 for $300.00. It has performed for me very well. The sound has improved with age. It has been my best friend for all these years. I am in the prison ministry here in New Mexico and when we go into the “hole” where the hard core prisioners are at you can not take any amps. Just the guitar and my baby plays so very well. The sound is great. I can’t say enough good things about this guitar.
Robert
Has anyone here every tried to repair the finish of an F-35? I recently purchase one with dents in inconvenient spots along the back of the neck. Any ideas on methods & materials?
It’s a ’79, if that makes any difference.

This popular thread has been given its own page : Fender Catalina acoustic
: does anyone know anything about a fender catalina acoustic guitar such as when it was made, how much they’re worth, etc.?
I bought a new one in 1980 I am down to just 2 guitars, this and a 69 gibson dove that needs work. But the catalina, to my ears sounds the way i like it
projects pretty good, palayable,, durable etc. Whatever factory was making these in Japan was ok.
I bought mine new in 1988 for $250 from a local music store. I have had it appraised at a retail price around $100 to $250 depending on condition. The real key to this guitar is its action and sound for a non-solid top guitar. The look is also quite different (Fender neck and tuning keys all on the same side) and makes an easy transition from electric to acoustic or vice versa. I have played just about every acoustic on the market and still keep this one. I have not placed a pick-up in this guitar yet. The sound is quite simply amazing. I have put it up against Martins, Takamines, PRS’s, and the like. It has a great sound that keeps getting better with age. For a guitar nearly 25 years old, I think I got a bargain with mine and I am not planning on parting with it anytime soon. It plays and sounds great.
does anyone know what materials a fender catalina acoustic guitar are made from. example – back, sides & top ect… By the way I also enjoy my Catalina, I find it plays best with Martin Med. strings. I also added a Dean Markley pro mag Sound hole pickup that I installed propper 1/4" strap hardware input.. It;s ok but it realy needs some form of preamp.. very low gain. If I did it again I would use a FishMan rig. hope this helps someone enough to let me know the material spec. Regards David
YEAH, I have a black with black pickguard Fender Catalina acoustic with white pin stripes . serial 90112792.The action is great on this guitar! and the tresrod is exposed from the inside. the electric fender headstock.

I bought a fender catalina on ebay for $149.00,
just found out tonite they are worth around $400.00
I just got one for my 45th birthday. Funny, it came up for sale that very day. What a guitar, and what beautiful shape. Gotta keep it clean, ’cause black guitars look better in the shade. From my research, this guitar was only made in black with black pickguard. It was made from 1983 to 1987, and from beater to excellent, are now worth from around 150 – 700 dollars. I just picked mine up for 300 CAD, with a hard case, and it was in amazing condition (hardly played, until now). I put a set of extra light D’Addario strings (10/47)and it sounds nothing short of glorious. I play it every day, even if it is just strumming a few chords. I’m glad I didn’t get it earlier in my life because I wouldn’t have appreciated it the way I do now.
Hi, i am 17. My mom bought my dad a fender catalina in 1983 as a wedding present. It is one of the most beatiful acoustic guitars I have ever seen. It is in great condition and had a solid melow tone.
I have one that was the first acoustic I ever bought. Have had it since roughly 1989. Paid $200 for it at Ciderville located in Claxton, Tennessee. I have since purchased a Taylor 410CE and a Breedlove and still play the Fender 10x’s more than the other 2. I wouldn’t sell it or trade it for anything. Beautiful guitar, bright clean tone. I love it!! Would like to know more about it but then maybe not.. I have a feeling that when I pass on that my son will inherit a true treasure that is as beautiful as any women I have ever known and definitely truer!! lol If you have one. I would keep it for sure…
I got mine around 1985 at Chicago´s store it costed me $200. Beautiful!, the best, I still play my baby. The best curve i ever have.

Hi. I’ve had a Catalina since about ’87. Fantastic sound and tonal quality. Wouldn’t play anything else. I’ve found it difficult finding info on them though, even at Fender. Did they do any other colours? Mine’s Black.

My wife purchased a Fender Catalina for me in the early 1980s, right after we got married. She told the guy at the guitar shop that I really liked nice things. He turned her on to a black body Fender Catalina. What a beautiful instrument. Not only has it retained it’s beautiful finish, it made it through two sons. The guitar plays as beautiful today as the day I got it for my birthday. I prefer this guitar to any other I have ever played and still enjoy pulling it out and making beautiful noise. I am not a professional musician but have played since 1966. The only ones I have seen are black body with white edging. The thin Strat neck is great for fingering tunes and I have the dreaded "fat finger tips" and can still hit each string cleanly. Not to many for sale and most that are are in pretty bad shape. I can’t put a price on mine as I will never part with it but assume they can easily get well over $750 for a really clean unit and around $250 for one that has seen better days.
The Catalina model, part of Fender’s California series, is a dreadnought acoustic made in Japan approx. 1982-1985 and in Korea approx. 1985-1992. The Catalina was available only in black. (Occasionally, you may see one in natural finish after an owner decided to strip the finish). All Catalinas have spruce top, mahogany back/sides, rosewood fretboard/bridge, white binding and chrome tuners on a Strat-style headstock. I traded for one from its original owner in 1990 and consider it my luckiest deal of 30+ years of picking. Catalinas defy all laws of laminated guitar physics. Resonant, balanced tone that mics/records beautifully and gets bigger and better with age. Upgrade to bone nut and saddle, lower the action and try to find a better playing/sounding guitar at any price.
Hi,
I have had my Catalina since the late 80’s This was the missing piece to my collection, I play a strat, a tele, a Gibson SG and wanted am acoustic that had the feel of a strat. The Catalina is exactly that. it’s funny that it has the Strat headstock, because the moment I picked it up it felt like I was playing an acoustic stratocaster. it tends to get a bit drowned out if jamming with big box jumbo type acoustics but for the silky smooth lead runs, WOW! hard to find one of these Korean built beauties, they all seem to be black, and look like carbon copies of each other. if you have the chance to get one, SNAP IT UP. saw one on ebay for $219.00 US today, I might bid on it at that price.
Hi all. I have a Black (seems that’s the only color) Fender Catalina guitar that was my late fathers and I don’t play so it just sits around the house collecting dust. I think it would be much better off in someone elses hands who can appreciate it. I am in northern NJ and would take $500 for it. Let me know. [email protected]
Hello! I have had my Fender Catalina since 1988 and it still looks and sounds like new…. Not sure what it it’s worth today but mine doesn’t have a scratch on it. It too is black with the strat appearance.

The Catalinas were discontinued back in the late 80’s/early 90’s (I believe) and if you have one in excellent/good condition it’s probably worth between 500-600, depending on how many were made (I’m still trying to find out how many were made myself)
They stopped making them in 1992

Hi, I’m from Italy and I got a Catalina I bought in 1987 for abt. $200.00 in Italy. Nice guitar, although it has no solid spruce table. Mahogany back and sides, rosewood keyboard, black painting. I don’t know production dates: it was made in Korea.

I have a Catalina that I bought new in 1981 here in Sweden for about $200. I’ve had several guitars before that. It’s a fantastic guitar to play and it’s the last one that i’ve bought….I don’t want to change it for anything….It’s the best I’ve ever had….
Hello, They only started making the catalina in 1983, and stopped in 1992, so u caoudlnt have gotten it in ’81
Hi
Your dates are wrong ,as I bought mine new here in Canada and still have the paperwork showing the date of purchase as June 1981, $399.98, here in Canada new. These guitars came in a line called the California series. These all had place names from California ,U.S.A and came in some wild colours
in some of the other guitars from that series, The Catalina common colour was Black, also known as the Black Cat , but some special editions were made
and were a dark green almost Black ,these model’s are hard to find and get $$$ if in good shape . I have seen another colour reported to have come from the factory in a Blood dark Red these two guitar colours were only sold in Japan on the Catalina and where never exported outside of that country. Only colour the rest of the world could buy it in was the Black. Also the early models like mine came without labels inside the sound hole and no made in Japan
marks anywhere on the guitar. It had only the Fender Catalina badge on the Headstock . I would never part with the one I have and I play it everyday ,I have played guitar from the 60’s and have owned many acoustics but this one is always special and the go too. I have seen newer models of the Catalina made outside of Japan don’t know what they sound like ,but did jam with a guy who had a Black cutaway can’t remember the series name, but was same name as the city that is in California that has the tar pits and the guitar had factory electronics was Black and like I said was a cut away made in Korea, That one sounded real good he bought it in 1991 new . and paid 425.00 .I don’t know what year the Catalina was stopped being made but most likely around this time or shortly after 1991. Have seen one on the computer for sale and that Catalina looked cheaply made and it was said to be a 1990 .and that is all I know about that one.
The Japan model Catalina never came with electronics and never as a cutaway model . I just remember seeing mine hanging up on a wall in line with all the other members from the Cal. series and mine was the 3rd from the best model, as I said some of the other ones had some wild colours painted on them.
and all had the Strat Fender headstock . Those early Cats where built well and sounded great and even sound better the older they get. I replaced the Nut
and saddle with bone and that just makes the sound even better. I don’t know what country you are from ,but the Catalina was here in Vancouver BC in 1981. and I bought one and the 1st song I played on it was a Neil Young song ,Tell Me Why, if that isn’t something to wonder about ?? But I can tell you this
after all these years (2013 now) it was the best guitar above all ,for me . All the best and if you find a early one buy it.

does anyone know anything about a fender catalina acoustic guitar such as when it was made, how much they’re worth, etc.?
Bought mine a few months ago from a pawn shop.
Made in Japan 1982, the first year they started making the Catalina.
Only been playing guitar for just over a year so I didn’t know much about it but when I played it in store i was shocked at how nice it sounded and how easy it was to play. Pawn shop guy didn’t know anything about it and wanted $300 for it. I figured it had to be worth around that and we ended bargaining on $225. Such a steal! I could make a nice profit but I think I’m going to keep it since I like it so much.
I bought M
mine yesterday for 500€
Made in Japan 1983
I hope i will enjoy ist like u guys.
Greetings from germany.
I bought a secondhand catalina to an old classmate for $10 she said that shes going to buy a new ukulele cause she cant use the guitar
Bought mine new in December ’81 in Fort Lauderdale, Fl. Walked in the store to get some strings with my brother. Saw her hanging on the wall and made a bee line straight to her. Brother said noman, but it was to late. That particular day, they had everything marked half off. $200.00. But wait, it gets better. She had a little ding on the bottom so it was marked down to $100.00. We walked out of the music store a very happy couple. It’s traveled the globe with me. I have some very nice guitars but she’s the best of the bunch. I play her EVERY DAY. If I loose her, that’s it. She’s family and is treated as such. I’d give my wife up before I let her go. Not made from the best material’s but it’s the best money I’ve ever spent on a guitar. NB
Could someone please help me out, mine is a bit of an anomally to what you guys are saying. For one mine is U.S. made, fairly sure it’s from the 70’s or early 80’s. For two it doesn’t have a Strat style head but rather an acoustic style with 3+3 plank tuners. Also it’s not solid black but rather black with a white pin stripe around the body line on the front and back of the body and around the sound hole, and a brownish gold fade/burst (I guess you’de call it that.) Also it has a white rectangle marked fretboard and a design over where the pickguard would be with a music symbol inside of a white shape that resembles a pick guard. Also the thing that holds the strings at the body is metal and screws to the very bottom of the body. Could anyone help me out here as to what era mine is and why mine is so much different?
If your guitar has a bolt on neck /or a neck that can be removed by unscrewing it ,like an electric Strat . then you have the USA 1st Generation model. Elvis played one and many others ……the Catalina models were made from
1982 to about 1990 but the the very best ones were made in the 1st 3 years in Japan later model became cheaper and just seeing the early next to later one can see right away . These early ones are very good sounding guitars ,if you add a bone bridge and saddle, I’d put mine up against a 1100.00 Martin any day.
Hi
I bought my Fender Catalina acoustic when they first came out Dec 1982 for 400.00 in case . It is one of then the new
California series, it came in Black with white inlays around the outer body edges and sound hole. The sound board or top & back are made from cedar. Now the very early ones like mine first run made came with what is known as the Viking saddle design for the bridge ,kind of has little horns turned up at each end of the design facing forward ,this is one way you can tell if you have a very early one the later ones never had this design and were more simple made.
Also many of the early ones only had the model number and production number one at the base of the neck block inside the body as seen through the sound hole and one on the back reinforcement brace directly below the sound hole. They were made in Japan but had no made in Japan on them anywhere and no maker sticker inside the sound hole. They were brought out at a time Fender in California was down sizing and looking to compete in newer markets, they went to Japan to build this line of acoustic guitars. These were built on a USA older design that had a bolt on neck ,these are very rare guitars to find and were made in the early 1970s. The Catalina design did not have this bolt on feature it had a one piece neck with truss bar which can be adjusted through the sound hole. The idea behind the neck was for those who played electric Fender guitars when they switched to this new Catalina acoustic design it would have the same feel and action as the electric guitar . These Catalina guitars came mainly in Black ,but could be purchased in a very dark almost Black color and a deep red as special order only and only in the 1983-4 production run. By the end of 1984 the guitars would start to be made elsewhere in places like Korea, these were good quality
guitars but made less fancier or for a better word made more simple in design ,like the bridge saddle changed from Viking style to just a tapered straight at the ends design and the white banding design around the body and neck became more simple. Japan stopped building production at the end of 1984. After this date they were all made in Korea and are stamped of the back of the head stock at it’s base Made in Korea. The Catalina would further be made more simple as the years from 1984 to 1992 show .although they appear to look the same necks become smaller and head stock are cut different from one year to the next ,as noted by just taking a 1984 Catalina and one from 1992 differences can be seen by one for is looking for them . Catalina’s never came with a cut out model they designed another model to the California series into the production and in 1995-6 the line was dropped . In 2011-12 Fender reissued the California line ,but without the Catalina model and these are all made in China ,but in 2014 certain models a numbered few could be ordered and were made in the USA .
My Catalina as all of them did came with a plastic bridge and nut and they do sound real nice ,but if you want to make any of these guitar sing do invest in replacing both the nut and bridge with bone, it really makes a big difference to them .Catalina Acoustic guitars never came with a pick-up or pre-amp installed ,I also had one installed on my Catalina. I have had other higher brand name acoustic guitars ,but find I prefer the Catalina to anyone of them
Hi Leo,
I was trying to find information so that I could date my Fender Catalina and I just found your great post with all this comprehensive info. Thank you for this!
Now, I have a doubt I’d like to discuss with you, and all of you guys out there, as my guitar seems to have conflicting features following your information.
I bought it sometime in the late 80s, I can’t exactly remember. It’s black, as most were, and the serial # is A6 6476882. It features the Viking saddle, which indicates it should have been MIJ, but it also features the “Made in Korea” stamp on the back of the head stock and the maker sticker inside the body. Could it be some hybrid model made in Korea but with remaining parts from an earlier MIJ model? I tried to find more info from the serial number, but without any luck.
Any help would be much appreciated, thank you!
I also bought mine in 1982 around Xmas time. Cost was about 400.00 with out a case . I know my Catalina is a early one as it has the Viking style saddle and mine also has no sticker in side the sound hole or Made in Japan anywhere on the guitar. My Catalina came in Black as most did but , I was told these guitars could be ordered in a very dark green and a deep candy red color .I would not sell or trade my Catalina for any other guitar . I read that replacing the nut and bridge with bone makes the guitar sound even better and give more volume then the plastic ones it came with . I have played guitar for over 40 years and have owned
other higher priced guitars but none have ever replaced the Catalina it is truly a prized guitar and if you have one you.
I think the Japan made ones were built from 1982-83 and after this made in Korea until about 1992. The later ones sounded good but were made less fancier then the early one like the one I have. Again just a great guitar and my go to
for over 30yrs
These were built on a USA older design that had a bolt on neck ,these are very rare guitars to fine and were made in the early 1970s. The Catalina design did have this bolt on feature it had a one piece neck with truss bar which can be adjusted through the sound hole.
I have had other higher brand name acoustic guitars ,but find I prefer the Catalina to anyone of them
Hey,
Get this:
1. Around 2000-2002, don’t remember well, I got this as a gift… From a normal, every-day friend/person.
2. Until 2009 played it, every now & then, then deposited it in its leather(ish) like stylized bag.
3. Can’t really remember if it started then, or since then, because when I got it out of its bag this year, I noticed a pretty big gap between the strings and the fretboard (approx. 5-7 mm/quarter of an inch). Then I noticed that the body presented a somewhat bulky area, somewhere behind the brigde (or where the strings come out). Maybe it’s just me, or in time the wood really developed a bulky spot, because of the strings tension, which b.t.w. are in standard tuning…
4. Then I think of selling it… Maybe someone will have a go on it, for $130. Posted an ad…
5. But then I thought, maybe the strings have always been like this, and I was to young to know this much about a guitar. Moreover, even if it’s not been like this, and this phenomenon started to develop only during the last years, I began to think about counteracting. For example, what if I lowered the bridge (cutting it)? Plus meddling with the steel bar that’s inside the neck (can’t remember what it’s called, English is not my native language), to straighten the neck. Because it also got curved over the years.
6. The small repair turned out so well, that the strings are now closer to the fretboard, than on an e-guitar!!! And without having a single fretbuzz. So I decided to keep it 🙂
7. Today I searched the internet after this guitar model, and I found you guys, with your stories, out of which the prices stroked me most.
And now I’m really happy I kept it.
And it really sounds fantastic, by the way!
I need to replace mt tuners on fender catalina Korea. What tyle to replace with, fender part Number or suggestion. thanks
I bought mine about 1983 from Guitar Center in Santa Ana Calif for about $400 with out the case. The only thing I have had done to it is I changed the tuning keys to Grovers and had a bridge pickup installed. This black beauty is by far my most favorite acoustic guitar in my music room and the older the guitar gets the better it sounds. My suggestion is if you have one treasure it, if you can buy one do it you won’t be sorry.
I bought my Catalina new in late 1981, it cost me $400.00 CND. It is Black with white trim Strat style rose wood neck
I have played guitar since the 1960s both electric and a number of acoustic guitars .The Black Cat (Catalina) has always been by far the best and I’ve played Martins and Gibson’s, Ovations, ,Yamaha’s ,Takamines ,and some custom built Taylor guitars. I find this Catalina can hold it’s own and most times has a better sound then most of these makes dollar for dollar the Catalina sound wise seems better . Mine was made in Japan it was one of the 1st wave, Fender had built in Japan, it was a member of the California collection series . Fast action neck same feel as a Fender Stratocaster electric
guitar. The Catalina is a spruce top and mahogany, sides and back and neck. My Catalina # 808312 came without a label sticker inside of the sound hole ,all the early ones were like that and no made in Japan marker on the guitar any where. Just Fender Catalina on the head stock. Mine new didn’t have any electronics inside it ,the next model up had that. The guitar is a pleasure to play has a real sweet even sound ,projects well. I did have the frets done twice and had a bone nut and bridge saddle put in, which made the guitar even better sounding and well worth doing for any one not having done so. I also had a Classic T-4 Fishman put into it ,so I could use it with an amp. This works great also well worth adding on. Strings, I use Martins lights to Med. tried other brands still go back to Martin strings , hey they are cheap and sound great , you just have to change them more often. Like I said I have had other acoustic guitars some that cost me way more then the Black Cat. and I find I still keep coming back to the Catalina and it seems it is always the one I go to
and you would only have to take a look at the back of the neck to see the paint all worn off it ,to know it’s a keeper.
My advice if you can get a Japan made Catalina go for it ,put some bone on it and you have just bought a friend for life.
Great Guitar 110%
I’ve got my eye on a Catalina in a pawn shop… they want $254.00 for this beautiful girl and want HER BAD!!! She looked and sounded great… My question is? $254.00 to much for HER?
I bought one about 6 years ago for a little over 100.00 and it has been a great guitar. Some of you may not know this but this is an electric acoustic. Just plug a 1/4 guitar cable into the strap holder. I also converted mine and put a pickup in it and volume and tone knobs and its now even better.
got one myself 20 years ago. agree with all the good comments. i love mine and pals of mine who play say its the best guitar they tried, sound and action. mines black. sounds like theres no other colour? someone made a great guitar there though!?!
I have a early 80s Fender Flame (looks like a Les Paul) guitar and was looking for information on it. I know this guitar is rare but was wondering how rare. Any comments?

: The Fender flame was produced in 1984 only and came in three models: the ultra, base w/trem and base as far as I have seen they were only available in black with ivory binding and a sunburst finish. The electronics, hardware humbuckers and trem were all unique to the flame so if your copy is in good condition great but if not good luck finding factory replacement parts. As far as rarity goes Fender only produced 800 instruments in 1984 according to a guitar history buff I know who specializes in yhis area. In my experience I have only seen or heard of four; mine, yours, and two that sold on e-bay. If you have other questions I have more info feel free to e-mail me.

I must have number 5! Pearlescent white-ish/yellow-ish color, "Flame" and "Elite" on headstock. Black binding and 2 humbuckers with a small silver toggle that I think splits the coil-not sure. If anyone has any info regarding this guitar please respond. I aquired this piece about 2 months ago and I can’t find anyone who knows anything about it. Please help me figure out what I have and what shes worth. And, NO, it is not for sale.

This is a very nice guitar, and the color that you have is even harder to find. It seems to me that the black model is much easier to find. Elite’s usually go for around $1000, but if its in perfect condition with that serial number, you might be able to get more for it.

Hello Guys
Glad to see so many enthusiasts of the Fender Flame. I have an ’84 Flame Standard in Autumn Burst. The guitar is a joy to own and play. I am told that a high number of Flames made it to Europe. I only know of two other Flames in Europe, apart from mine.
Here is an excellent link to learm more about this very distinctive guitar: http://www.masterseriesguitars.com/
Kind regards
Bob
I have a Numbered Fender Flame Cherry Sunburst I bought from the Camden Rock Shop in London in 1984. I payed £265 for it and all I know is that Fender manufactured these at the Ibanez factory for one year only. I believe they made around 1000 or slightly less but they didn’t take off because Fender is not really associated with a hum bucking /Gibson type sound. With a through neck, It is the best made, best finished and unique sounding guitar I have ever owned. About 5 years ago I had the Legendary Andy Viccars set it up for me and make sure it was all running sweet. It now plays itself. It is a stunning instrument.
I have one too. I love this guitar and never was able to part with it. I actually sold my SRV edition strat last year when someone made me an offer I couldn’t refuse. I love how meaty this guitar sounds and the shape of the neck. And it sustains forever. I bought it in high school in 84. I have the sunburst model. I have a pickguard on mine (gibson type) that I honestly can’t remember if I had the guitar shop add on or not. I only changed two things on this guitar over the years – the front pickup with something a little dirtier and the knobs. I am going to check and try to find my receipt to see if it was factory or not. I think I still have the knobs and front p/u too.

Hello, i just bought mine on a outdoor market (where people sell old things they have under their roof). 350euros.
They looks a bit odd, il like it. It seems to work well.
According to "http://fr.audiofanzine.com/produits/index,idproduit,39153.html", argus says 450euros. A man in north of France is selling its at 200euros… grrrrrr… 😮
Mine is better, of course 😉
my freind gave me this guitar in 1992 or 3 it is a very good piece and lacks alitle bottom end but the playability is better than most any el-acoustic out there, especially with a really good action set up.
According to a site I was just at, the Montara was made 1990 – 92, $525.00 – $675.00. Mine is 90802232.
I bought mine Montara (90573533) brandnew in ’91 for something like $650 in a guitarshop in Belgium. It still looks brandnew! I use it on stage only, hardly play it at home. I have never seen another one here, I wonder if they are rare at all.
I am looking to buy a montara now …. if you are looking to sell pleases contact me by e-mail. Thank you
Newly restored by Fender…sounds amazing, black to aibourn su nburat….custom inlays….make me an offer

However if your looking for a give away price. Look elsewhere.

Hello:
Got a slight ding in the finish on the neck and wondered what type varnish Fender uses? Anyone have any luck touching up a neck?
Thanks,
Jesse
Hi, I’ve got a question to ask. My fender strat is about 2 years old, and I just found out from my repair man that the neck is bowed so bad that It has to be heated to be bent back straight, and the frets recarved or whatever. Ive heard from some guy that he had that done to his guitar(which didnt have a trussrod) and it just went back to being bowed within about 1 year. And he had to have it heated again. I was wondering if that’s gonna happen to my guitar. I dont wanna have to pay this much money to have it heated and bent back to normal every 11 months. HOpefully you can give me some insight. I was also wondering how long Fender’s warranty is on their necks and stuff. Thanks alot Todd
does anyone knows which year was my bass(L0033322) made.
it´s a fender precission made in japan. sunburst, black pickguard serial nº L0033322
I have what I believe is a 69 re-issue MIJ Stratocaster. It’s Surf Green. The Serial# identifies it as made in 1986-1987. Any help would be appreciated.
A NEW 2000 re-issue strat goes for about $500 I would assume it would go for $300-400 depending on where it was made and what shape it is in but knowing that in the 80’s fender guitars were made with not nearly as much quality as past years or years after they don’t sell for much at all. I am not sure if the re-issues were made the same but that would seem to be about right $300-400 near mint (a few scratches here and there) .and P.S. unless u are thinking about trading it in you might try selling it in on e-bay if you ar5e selling for cash you tend to get a little more because when u sell it to a dealer they have to think how much they can get for it then charge you less then what it is worth.

Need a chrome bar for an 83 Strat Elite. This is a "snap-in" type. Does anyone have one that will fit? By the way this is for sale at $850. Silver gray in Near Mint condition with original case. I’d like to trade for a Tele Elite if anyone has one to trade, or a Rickenbacher.
Check this site out…they will probably have just what you need if you haven’t already found it. Fender called the system Freeflyte and it was made by Schaller. Anyway here’s the site… http://www.fretsonthenet.com/Tremolobars.htm#Fender_Elite_

If you are referring to the Robben Ford type Elite series prior to Fender making it a signature custom shop model, it was produced in Japan for one year only, 1987. I have one and put EMG’s on it and get nothing but compliments on its tone. Hope this helped. If I were to buy one today, I would have to go through the custom shop ala Robben Ford model.
Keep Jamm’in!!

Does anyone know if there were any SRV strats that had Brazilian Rosewood fingerboards instead of Pao Ferro?
I think that I own one?

There are a few SRV guitars that were made with the brazillian stuff. Check out srvfanclub.com for specifics.
I bought a ’65 mustang and have been searching endlessly to find out about the paint job. I know the standard colors were red, blue, and white, but I have read that Fender introduced "burgendy mist" in 1963 as a custom color. Comparing it to other paint jobs the guitar leans toward burgendy. There has been alot of playing on this guitar and paint is worn off. Where itis worn off you can see the layers of paint. They go from wood-white(base color?)-to a purple-then the burgendy. When you get it inthe light there even seems to be sparkles in it (metallic feature?)I was wondering if someone out there use to work at Fender–did you experiment with colors at all? Were any Mustangs ordered in a burgendy even though it was a student guitar?

Have a nice day 🙂
The Fender mustang was discontinued in 1981 and then again in 1996. Fender’s line-up for 2002 does not include the Mustang. Get a life.

This popular thread has been given its own page : Strat 5-way super switch wiring diagrams on the web?
Hi Jon
If You still need the wiring diagram mail me 🙂
: I have a strat that is currently wired using a "simple" 5-way switch. The switch is worn out, so I picked up a Fender "5-way super switch". The switch is so complex that I can’t figure out how to get the simple 5-way switching (i.e. neck/neck-middle OOP/middle/middle-bridge OOP/bridge) that I had before — does anyone know of a web site that has detailed pickup wiring diagrams that I could use?
: Thanks,
: Jon
The "Super switch" is essentially 2 regular switches on one body. Just wire up on half like your original switch and you are all set. Email me if you want a diagram.

Jon,
I had no luck on Dimarzio’s site for wiring a super switch; have you found one? Also, which strat do you have? I just bought a used one that someone had installed a super-switch. I’m thinking of switching it back to stock.

Can anyone tell me the history or date my amp for me please?
It is covered in grey carpet…has red knobs on the controls. All I know is that it is about 90w and I would like to know the history of it please.
I just purchased used an M80 Chorus with black carpeting, 2X12, stereo, etc. Nobody can give me a defintive answer as to the wattage. I ‘ve heard everything from 60 per speaker in stereo, and 120 w/both, to 80 per speaker, 160 w/both. Anybody out there know?
I also have one of these. I bought mine new back in 91 or 92. Grey carpet, red knobs, clean channel, over drive channel w/ foot switch, effects loop, 1 12′ speaker, 2 imputs in the front for your guitars, one head phone jack and in the back one input jack for a extra speaker. I always wanted to pick up the etra box speaker which would have made this combo amp a mini stack, but I never did. You guys wouldn’t happen to have this and are willing to part ways with it or would you know with I could find one? Thank you so much for your time.
Bee.
Stefan … I have an M-80 also and while I can’t tell you how to date it exactly, Willie from FDP Forum told me the M-80 was made from about ’90 to about ’94. It was part of the product line aimed at the metal crowd of the late 80’s and early 90’s. The M-80 Chorus was the successor to the Power Chorus and preceded the Ultimate/Ultra Chorus. The M-80 Chorus Combo featured 2×12’s and an output power rated at 130 watts RMS. The combo originally listed for $719 and the head for $619.
Take the screws out of the top and push the head (circuit board) out of the front on the amp and there is a year date printed on the board. I think its on the left side. I have a fender m-80 112 combo and mine is from 89.

I’ve got an M-80 combo and I once removed the control pannel to clean the contacts. On the mainboard I red 1989.

: How much should a Fender Precision Lyte and Lyte Deluxe cost approx. 2nd hand. AUS prices please.
About 1 year ago I picked up one in almost mint condition (slight pitting of gold plate on hardware) for $400 U.S.
I have seen prices from around $250 to $800. I figure the $200 guitars were beat to death and the buyers of the $800 ones didn’t look around beforehand. I think I got a great deal on mine for $400. Hope this helps you out.

I have a Fender model F-15 but am unable to find any information about it…is it collectable or just plain ripp off stuff?
I need some help dating a guitar, as I am not very familiar with them. It is a Squier Strat, but instead of saying Squier large (where the Fender logo would go) it says Fender. On the round part of the headstock, it says "Squier Series" in small print. The serial number is CN201920. I bought this guitar for $5 at a garage sale, and would like to get some history of it, as the seller didn’t know. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Dear Cork,
I can not give you the exact information. Usually the coronado does about US$ 1.000,-. For the case I don’t know.
I mail you because you might be able to help me. I am desperatly seeking for a pick guard for my Cornado XII of "68.
I know that it might be the same shape as the Coronado II.
I’d really like to have my, still in use, instrument in the original shape. If you have information for me, please!

Great guitar made in Japan around the 70’s – 80’s. I own one and they are better than the new Fender’s made in Mexico. Grab it if it’s in good shape. They sound better than the USA’s!

Has anyone had any experience with the Fender DG-27SCE acoustic guitar. I just do not see anyone playing Fender acoustics at all. Why? The DG-27SCE seems to be the top of the line Fender for Dreadnoughts. Where is it made, Korea or Mexico? Thanks for any advice.

I am looking for a Fender Malibu, does anyone know where to get one?
I have had my Malibu since the 60’s. I play it every day.
It is the only guitar I practice with. I play live with
a Stratocaster, Telecaster and Precision bass. The finish is almost completely gone but it still playd like butter. I have a Seymour Duncan Woodie sound hole humbucking on it and will play it through the PA when I play live with it. It is a great guitar and it is not replaceable. Pat
