on my washburn monterey acoustic-electric, the g-string quit playing through the amp. all the other strings sound fine, but the g won’t amplify. it’s about 18-years old. it just quit all of a sudden.

Hi. This is David. My uncle had the same problem with the second string. The reason was the pickup (it is in the bridge of the guitar). As you said your guitar is quite old. The pickup has probably bent during this years. You should better show it to the men who understand something in this business, as my uncle did. And don’t try to do it yourself. Now my uncle’s guitar works perfectly though he didn’t change the pickup. Good luck. By the way, I try to find such a guitar, But the cheap one (may be second hand). Please give me some information if you have.

What I know is what I got and wouldn’t change for anything I have played so far…Parker Deluxe (RED) with GK2 pick thru Roland GR-09 . I have played for 34 years and I own 17 guitars but I still love the verstilty of the parker .I have had Harvey Jett , (Black Oak) Mark Farner GFR, Greg Martin.KHH. and some blues players over to the house and they all end up on the parker. Play on Bro. : Has anyone owned a parker guitar? would it be worth it to buy the p-38. Are they reliable guitars? Tell me anything you know please

Tell me anything you know please i have played all models of parkers and i like all of them, the p-38 and p-40 have a wood neck versus graphite, that preference is up to the player, i love the electronics in all of them, the p-38 and p40 even though made in korea i cant find anything wrong with them everything is excellent quality and they are cheaper. i use mesa boogie amps and fender acoustic amps, and a roland guitar synth, and i feel have a overall complete sound.

THERE ARE SOME GREAT PICKUPS OUT THERE. MOST , AS THE OTHERS HAVE SAID, DIMARZIO AND SEYMOUR DUNCANS ARE GREAT. SCHALLER PICKUPS ARE VERY GOOD AND NOT TO EXPENSIVE. MY PERSONAL FAVOURITE IS THE SEYMOUR DUNCAN "ALLAN HOLDSWORTH" MODEL, IT IS RICH WITH SUSTAIN BUT VERY CLEAN FROM STRING TO STRING. GOOD LUCK

Get EMG’s man, these pickups rock. I play in a metal band and use them exclusively. You could get two EMG 81’s (like Kerry King) or to really beef up your tone get an EMG-81 for the bridge position and an EMG-85 for the neck position. Trust me once you play with these pickups anything else sounds whimpy.

I agree with the Moo man. Get EMG-81. The best god damm pickups out there. They gotta be the best because the best guitarist in the universe uses them. That my friend is the one and only Kirk Hammet. I use them on my KH-502 guitar. Keep rockin man.

Go with some DiMarzio’s or some Seymour Duncan’s. I prefer Duncans. The Jeff Beck model is good, also known as the TB4, which comes stock on high end Jacksons ( $800.00 +) Duncan SH-6 are pretty high end as well. Maybe the Lynch ‘Screamin’ Demon". Oh, dont forget about EMG 81’s. Possibly the heaviest pickup out there, but you need a 9 volt battery installed to give it the juice. Give a look at these pickups, you might find what your looking for.

I have a Jackson SL-3, with a TB4 in the bridge and 2 Hot Rails in the neck and middle. I want to change my neck pickup, can u recommend me a good one (single coil) like for shredding, i know that hotrails are called shredder pickups but is there any out there? or should i just stay on my hotrail?. and I bought my Jackson SL-3 for 700, is that worth it?

Thanks so much for the fast reply! I kinda thought those screws would fix it. I was a lil skeerd ta mess with ’em though. the saddle set screw is nearly toching the first string and I’m sure it’ll break the string. I couldn’t see any adjustments for it either. Thanks again!

O.K . I’ll get a sample out on my friends website. But what about you? I really want to hear just how a "god" plays. As far as playing in a bedroom, nah, I get out sometimes. Playing in a band prevents me from being a hermit. So, tell us more about this playing with your feet. Can you play with other parts of you body too? Why don’t you tell us mortals what kind of omnipotent gear you own? Oh, and why am I getting the feeling you are ALL talk? Like I said in the previous post, why don’t you just show your abilities instead of boasting all the time?

at last, another guitarist with a sense of humor, not !! you want to show the world how good you are, go on, admit it, but i play for myself and you need people to love your playing and you think that will make them love you. Quite sad really. ps, you might be a good technique bloke, but if you dont have any humor in your playing, then, you have lost the plot. pps, admit it, you like my posts, it gives you something to get up in the afternoon for. love Bob

Open up that back plate. You should see at least 3 springs attached to a spring "claw". The claw has two screws(wood type). Tighten these two screws to let string tension overtake, loosen to allow the springs to overtake. In your case you will want to tighten the screws, by the way, you want your trem to sit nice and level. Does the trem sit in a body cavity or not?

          Guest

I just read my post. The part about tightening and loosening were backwards. (?) O.K, If you loosen the screws at the claw, your allowing the strings to pull the trem towards the neck, if you tighten the screws at the claw, you will overtake the string tension and thus pull the trem toward the body of the guitar. So, its all in these screws. Also, different tunings will affect the position of the tremolo.

Yea, I play and do consider myself a "Shred" type guitarist, although I hate the term. Its demeaning. Its like you can shred, O.K but can you play with feeling? As far as equipment goes, I have what I need for now… Jackson DXMG ……. just got it, neede another back up Ibanez 540 Saber Custom….. sweet n’ skinny super thin neck Charvel (model 3 I think)…finished project. Late 80’s mod 50 per channel Rocktron Power Amp BBE Sonic Maximizer 862 Alesis MEQ 30 Rocktron Chameleon Rack Rider Power Strip, all of which is mounted in an SKB 8 space. Sound travels through 1 4×12 Ampeg cab with Celestions rated at 300 wts. Oh yea, other typical stuff would be a Shure SM-57 mic , Tascam 4 track and bunches of tools and Allen wrenches. BTW: Guiter9 rules. My favorite new website, I just found out about it last week.

I have a question for everyone out there: I am a long-time piano player who wants to learn to play the guitar. I am left-handed. Should I get a righty guitar and suck it up or get a lefty guitar? A lefty guitar feels more comfortable, but I know learning to play right-handed would make it easier to find equipment, music, etc. Any thoughts?

        Guest

it would be a lot easier right handed. that way you’ll be using your stronger and more agile hand for fretting. the equipments cheaper and you get more choice. you don’t have to convert chord boxes either. it won’t make it any more difficult for you playing a right hander. whatever you decide to play, good luck. xxxxxxxxxxxx

I just started hearing about Laney amps, are they that good. I like the sound of a small fender practice amp, or the sound of a 100 watt Marshall pushing mild distortion at high volume. Does laney compare? What do they do?————Dave

I had an original Supergroup 100w head back in the early 70’s and it honestly blew away any Marshall. It had a thicker tone when set like a Marshall, but tweak the treble and it sounds the same, with a TON of grunt.During the mid to late 70’s they went through some quality control problems, (the Laney/Klipp era) but they’ve got it totally back on track these days. They must be the most amazingly under rated amps on the market, especially in the states. The new ones are incredibly good! Don’t pass up the deals right now on used ones, they go cheap, and they are fantastic value. They do everything a Marshall can do, and much more. Mick

They’re good amps. Company started in mid-60s. Their non-master-volume amps up to about ’73 are excellent: sound a bit like Marshalls of that era. Company went downhill for a while, but they’re back making all valve beasties now. Check out the VC-30 or the LC-30 (Vox like 2×12" combo). Their stacks are pretty good too. Tony Iommi uses one (a signature model). Look at their website (Laneyamps.com or something) and then check out the reviews of the models you’re interested in on Harmony Central.

I have always loved Fender amps, and Marshall as well as some others. However, I bought a Laney amp this year and I am not disapointed at all! I play blues, but my son is into alternative rock, and we can both set the amp to get the tones and flavor we like. The model I bought has 2 12s and 100 watts with a built in effects channel plus a tube over drive circut that really kicks butt ! If you haven’t checked these babies out, you owe it to yourself to do so. My Marshall combo is collecting dust these days, and will likely serve as a stand or a cabinet if I keep using the Laney — it sounds that good. Check out my web site at : http://members.home.net/wilkatguitars/ for guitar set up and maintenance tips. Later, Bill

Yea, Greg Howe can play pretty well. I have that album "High Gear". Just thinking about those "old" days, I remember Fender STRAT’s. They didn’t last too long did they….(production wise) they just kinda died out. I think Yngwie Malmsteen was one of Mikes first "discovery’s". A band I really like from Shrapnel, and miss hearing is…. Apocrypha. Finally, a decent guitar conversation!

Hi everyone, I am hoping to buy my husband an acoustic guitar for Christmas as it’s something I know he would love to play, but he hasn’t gotten around to buying one. He’s an acoustic guitar novice, but has played bass guitar (musicman)for a number of years so isn’t a total guitar novice. What would recommend for him ?. I have been told a Fender DG4 would be good, but I don’t want something he would "grow out of" too quickly – do you think this wouls be likely ?. I thought I’d ask you guys as a friend recommended this site to me. Thanks in advance ! L x

I have just re-started my hobby of playing the guitar again. I’m 45 – did a lot of research and without any hesitation what-so-ever the Taylor Big Baby is incredible. I just bought one today for around $350.00 and I had an incredible guitarist friend of mine help me with my decision. I played the Big Baby first to see if I liked the "feel" and sound of the guitar. It is an extremely light guitar since the sides and back are made of veneer but the sound, especially the bass is the equivalent of the sound (if not better) than a guitar 3 times the price I paid. My guitar friend was totally impressed with the Taylor Big Baby also and he said there is no way that this guitar should be so priced so low. Heck, he loved the sound so much that he bought one himself and he has high priced Martins. He made the Big Baby do things that only a pro could do and he said that this was by far the best sounding guitar in anything near that price range. I love it … my fingers are sore since I just can’t put it down. The bass is great, chords are great – an incredible product.

Mick had a lot of good info for you…..but I will disagree that the Fenders are all crap…..my 1st was a nice solid top fender that only cost $200 but that was over ten years ago…….and I still play it regularly and is my camping/travel guitar…and I still love it even though Ive acquired many nice ones since then….the smartest thing you could do is to take a player with you to get a better perspective….and by all means if you can find a Taylor dealer, check out the "big baby" Taylor….like Mick said…..its the best bang for the buck….well made….sturdy…..not flashy…but great action…..and you want something easy to learn on….and if he really gets into playing he can always get anothter down the road…but he will always have a great backup/travel/camping guitar….just remember all guitars that look alike dont feel the same….you need a friend to play it and compare….good luck

Fender aren’t famous for their acoustic guitars and to be quite honest they are poor by any standard. You need to look for a guitar with a ‘solid top’ at least. An all laminated guitar will sound …crap. Laminated sides and back are okay. Just make sure you get that SOLID top. As your husband isn’t a total guitar novice don’t waste 100 pounds ( are you in the UK ? ) when spending a little more will be worth it’s weight in gold. Look at Washburns in the 150 – 200 pound range if you’re looking for something with that little extra. They are very well made , sound great and are easy to play. If you REALLY want to make him happy, buy him a Taylor Big Baby for around 300 pounds. I guarantee he’ll love it as it IS the best budget acoustic guitar on the market. He won’t need another acoustic ever again if you buy that one. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. Unforunately the Big Baby is out of my price range – I was thinking more about £150ish !. Having looked into this more it seems that the Washburn D10 sounds like a pretty good buy. I’ve got a couple of good shop recommendations to try out in London – now all I’ve got to do is bribe my friend with beers to come and play some guitars in my price range and see how they feel/sound !!. Thanks ! L x

how can any of you people actually find time to play the guitar, you are all on here night and day saying "please help, my guitar wont work" or "how can i get better on the guitar" or even "hey, anyone want to check out my website and listen to me play, cos im bigheaded and dont know what modest means". Well, i have a bit of advice, go and play your guitar more and, one day, you might be half as good as me, but you will never be as good, because i am the god of guitar !!!!. love Bob

Speaking of "modest", you must be the master of this. I’ve heard you talk some talk before, now its time to "Walk the Walk". Lets see and hear how good you really are. Let us mere mortal guitar players hear you play. A website download would be nice, but who’s to say that its really you playing. Oh yea, I can back up my stuff, I just don’t brag about it. If anyone wants to hear a sample, simply reply to this post. Or at least get my attention some how.

You didn’t say what kind of guitar, or how you filed the frets, etc. How low is your action set at the 12th fret? What gauge of strings are you using? What tuning are you using? (standard or dropped?) All these things affect string buzz. If you used a flat file on your frets you can expect a lot more buzzing (especially if the neck relief is too little and you’ve eliminated the crown of the frets). You should also be aware that sometimes neck adjsutments require a short set period. You’re dealing with wood and a metal rod when you make adjustments, which is why you need to do them gradually. If your neck is too straight (without any relief) you’ll have to set the action higher to eliminate buzzing. Check out my guitar tips at: http://members.home.net/wilkatguitars/ for some further advice. Good Luck, Bill

I’ve played Carvin gear for 20 years , and have also owned lots of classic stuff. I would rate their Guitars as good as any fender or gibson I have played. they have real nice necks, have first rate build quality, and are certainly a deal price wise, especially if you get some of the nicer options like flamed or quilted tops. They sound real good too, and if you want to change the sound you can always add after market pickups. They will let you return the guitar after 10 days if you don’t like, but believe me you won’t return it.

Does anyone know anything about Carvin, or if I should get one. : : I ordered a carvin about 6 years ago. Their quality sucks. The guitar I received had a backbowed neck that was so bad it couldn’t be adjusted. The frets looked like they were half filed down with a coarse file and had sharp burrs. The pickups also sucked. I drove back to the factory to return it. When I tried to show them the defect, they ignored me and wrote on the return receipt the "Customer didn’t like guitar",without mention that the guitar was defective. I feel sorry for the next sucker they shipped this guitar to. Don’t waste your money,go to a discounter or musician’s friend and buy a good guitar like a fender or gibson, etc.Hope this keeps you from making a mistake with a Carvin.

Active electronics are pickups that require a battery to operate, and to provide a boost in sound/signal. EMG pickups (higher end models) are active. Look into the EMG 81. Regular pickups(no battery) are refered to as "Passive".

: What does a reverse headstock do? Actually if you are using a floyd rose the balance is better because the larger string is the farthest from the bridge and the smallest the closest. Thus the tension is more balanced.

very little it mainly makes you guitar look a bit more gnarly. the only real change is the upper strings have less "bendable" string ie. behind the nut on the headstock compared to say a fender. but it willl realy make very little difference to they way the guitar plays

Anybody built a pedal board with loads of different pedals? The only idea I got is to stick the pedals to the board using velcro ‘glued’ on with a florist’s hot glue gun so’s I can get them off again. Anybody got any wisdom to share? Cheers, trog

Hey man, I’ve built several pedalboards in my life. My most recent one is probably the most complex. As you noted, I have gone the velcro route–only I don’t actually use the female velcro half on the board itself. I have the surface of the board covered in a flat carpet, to which the male velcro sticks really well. I typically fasten the velcro to my pedals by unscrewing the back and inserting the strip just under the back–this keeps glue off the pedal when and if I decide to ditch it on eBay. I currently 11 pedals on my board. I’ve built it at an angle for easier access. the front row of effects are just an inch off the ground. There is a second, elevated row that rises just above the profile of the first row of effects. I also built a makeshift rack underneath the board where I’ve screwed in my Chandler Digital Echo (pain in the ass unit only comes in rackmount format). I wire all the pedals w/ George L’s effect kit wire and power most of the effects w/ Voodoo Labs Pedal Power (smaller than a strip, no wall warts, and it’s quiet as a church).

Wow – that’s some set-up … 11 pedaly sounds about 4 more than my 7 – you must be dancing around like Riverdance sometimes :o) One day, someday, I’ll be advanced enough to find out more about George L’s effect kit wire, but at the moment my valves have gone strange and need replacing, so I’ll make do with what I got … as long as I play good enuff no one notices the hiss and squelch … think I’m gonna seek out a tape delay for that warm bounce … but first I’ll nail all that velcro to my board (I stuck the female (fluffy) on the pedals already and can’t be arsed going back right now) … thanks for the reply man — CU Trog

I LOVE The White Stripes & The Strokes, but I don’t think they’re competing against each other. They actually do get along quite well with each other. Julian and Jack are good friends with each other(wich I’ve read). They just have similar music. I love both of them!!!!!

this is a tough one, OK, the facts… 1. the white stripes kick ass 2. the strokes kick ass 3. choosing between the two is like saying "which is better, oxygen or air???" they are both alike and they both wail. 4. Jack White is hot, so is Julian Cassablancas, so you can’t even be superficial about the issue. so you see, it is a losing debate, both bands rock and choosing the best is impossible. ;)brooke

In response to Hazardous Dave, just because the Strokes and The Stripes are stripped down doesn’t make them any less ligitimate than the ‘better’ bands you named. Particularly as some of those you named, i.e Iggy and the Stooges and The Kinks, are very stripped down (and exceptional) bands themselves. Both the Strokes and The White Stripes are superb bands, and both, particularly The White Stripes, are emotionally deep. And my word can Jack White play a slide guitar. Oh and Queens of the Stone Age. Ha ha

Both of those bands are stripped down versions of REAL music. Look a bit deeper for better music. Blues Explosion, early fleetwood Mac, Morphine, Queens of the Stone Age, old soul music, Iggy and the stooges, Kinks, early Cars, Supergrass(first album)I understand what you see with these bands, understand where they came from and if you are a musician listen to these records and make your own music which will be just as good and hopefully better than the stripes or the strokes. it depends on what sort of music you are playing if its not like searing metal overdrive then i would have to recomend fender super 112. she’s got plenty of drive, and spring verb. it is all tube and sounds wikkid for just about everything if thats not rabid enough for ya get any laney amp

Fender amps are great — there are lots of possibilities. My son owns a Fender Deluxe 90 which I just wired to power a 4 x 10 Marshall cabinet, and it sounds amazing. This is a transistor amp but has lots of power and fits nicely on top of the cabinet. The distortion is excellent, although you can vary it with a good fuzz box. The Danelectro is great, as is the Corrosion pedal from DOD. This amp also has Fender’s superb spring reverb. While tube amps are still warmer overall, today’s transistor amps have come a long way, and are very reliable. A tube overdrive channel or pedal is also a good way to go. Tube amps are heavier to carry and the tubes need regular replacement — so you might want to check out some of the great transistor amps now available. Have you heard the killer sound of Laney amps with tube overdrive channel? They’ll blow you away! Check out my web site at: http//members.home.net/wilkatguitars/ for various tips being added regularly. Happy Hunting, Bill

I’m looking into buying a Carvin product myself. If there is one thing I know about Carvin, it’s that they strive for craftsmanship and tone quallity. I’m not suprised it has a better value because everything they make does. I’m sure that carvin is as good as Ampeg, if not better. Hey, if Carvin is good enough for Steve Vai, it’s good enough for me.

Ample reverb, some delay(about 2 or 3 repeats) maybe add some chorus if you like. Don’t saturate the distortion too much, or you will get this ugly hissing, sizzling sound. Well, not of course if you like this sort of sound. If you have a nice distortion/ clean sound, just try out differnt settings on the above Reverb,Delay, Chorus.

Well, you do get what you pay for. Think of it like this……… Body woods. Some produce more tone and resonance. Some are made up of 3 or more pieces of wood, glued together. One piece bodies are better, exept for neck throughs. Cheap drift wood is simply cheap. Necks.Probably the most important part. Neck throughs will cost more , but will have more comfort( at the neck joint) more tone, more natural sustain. Bolt on’s are ok too. Just remember that quality wood and fretwork cost money. Do you want a cheap neck with the frets stabbing your hand when you move up and down? Or do you want a "smooth" feel all around? Size also counts. Cheap guitars have small frets, which are harder to bend. Hardware. Original Floyds are awesome, some imitations truely suck. Again quality. Your choice, do you want to stay in tune or not? German made Schaller’s are very well made. Pickups. Some sound cool, some don’t. Some sound "heavy", while some just hum and buzz. All in all, don’t get me wrong. You don’t have to go broke buying a guitar. Just never compromise. Make sure you know what you want.Learn more about various woods and tone , including parts. Then you will be able to make an educated purchase. On a final note, some guitars cost a little more because they are made in USA. The same company may offer a similar product thats made in India or Mexico. The quality is still close if not the same, but think about it. The big guitar company’s send there products to be made in "Sweat Shops" so THEY can save money!

I’m assuming your talking about the price of the made in USA series, these are hand made with a great deal of time and labor involved, unlike the NJ, platnium, bronze, and rave series that are made over seas. The hand made series use better hardware, pick-ups, and better wood for better tone. Most of the US BC Rich’s are neck throughs that have great sustain and play like a dream. Don’t confuse the HAND CRAFTED MADE IN THE USA and the off shore pieces. For more info check out bcrich.com and edromanguitars.com(this site tells alot about B.C.Rich and other fine guitars. I own a US made B.C. Rich, woundn’t trade it for anything and plan on buying another.

Just a reminder that my site http://www.guitarforbeginners.com has answers to many of the questions posted here, all in plain English. GFB gets over 700 visits per day now, and some great feedback, like the one today from Brendan: i’ve been trying to teach myself and most of the sites i’ve found dont really help much. this is the first site that has actually been of use. THANKYOU!! Check it out! All the best, Kirk

i broke a .009 E so and didn’t have anything else but an .011. so i tuned it up to a E. I liked the sound of the bigger string but it is really hard to bend. i was wondering if there are any strings that will give a fatter sound while still being able to be bent easily. i use super slinky. thanks

Try 10 to 46 Dean Markleys. Also, don’t forget, you can still tune down a 1/2 step or more. This will aid in string bending(they won’t feel as tight) and produce a "warmer, darker" tone. Plus you will have increased resonance of the heavier strings. Simply put, the best of both worlds.

I just got a three person band together. We can play less then ten songs but we plan on being really good in the months to follow. But right now we want a band name. This has become a problem. We aren’t scary or mystic but we want a good name. How do you think of good band names? Dictionary? Weed?

okay, iv foudn out the easiest way to make a band name is to make up a song in ur head and think about all the words that u made up. like i was messing around in the car making up songs and i came acoss "no treatment" (that is my band name u cant use it) but i mean u can make a funny name " the fetus eaters" or watever.

What are the major reasons/differences an acoustic guitar player would choose a 6-string over a 12-string, or vice versa?

      • #86041

        Guest

The main reason of course is because of the sound. I use both a 6 and 12 in solo performances (one on Nov 19*, as a matter of fact) and in my 11 or 12 song set, I will use the 12 string on 4 or 5. The songs that I do on the 12 just do not sound right on the 6; the songs on the 6 won’t work on the 12 because of hammers, bends, slides, bar chords, etc. that are very difficult if not impossible on the 12! *If you’re in the Richmond VA area on Nov 19, come on by the Rare Olde Times on Patterson Ave about 9 pm!

Ill have to disagree with Aaron about getting a cheap 12 string…..I personally love the 12 and contrary to popular opinion they are awesome for playing lead(if you have a good one)…….if you use mainly 1st position chords they are a real treat to play but if you play a lot of bar chords even the good ones will be a little tiresome

12 strings sound like 2 guitars. they usually arent very loud but sound beautiful.a 12 string is basically a 6 string with the e,a,and d strings tuned up an octave. i personally like 6 strings but use a 12 string as a back up.i would reccomend spending alot on a 6 string and find a cheap 12. ovation makes a nice sounding 12 for a reasonable price but their 6 strings arent very good.: What are the major reasons/differences an acoustic guitar player would choose a 6-string over a 12-string, or vice versa?

Should I buy 0.10 or 0.09 strings? It’s a problem for me because I’m afraid of bending with 0.10 strings. Is this a problem or not with this cauge?

the tighter[lower number]the guage, the easier it will be to bend.. so .09s would be best if you really wanna go crazy. they are a lot tighter tho, so they are suceptible to breaking easier. so you might wanna go with 0.10s instead. 🙂 VIC

go for 10-52 they got loads of grunt, but youve just got to work your fingers a bit more for big bends 10’s sound warmer and sustain better than 9’s. but if your realy uncomforatble with 10’s, then go for what feels right ay

i have a fender p bass, and i recently bought a leo quan badass bridge for my babe and it sounds a lot more thicker, but the problem is, the strings are WAYYYYYYYY too high….. i tried adjusting the neck, but it’s still too high… is there anyway to fix that???

I just got a BA-I too and think I’ve got a more elegant solution than shimming the neck pocket. Seems to me that since the BA-I is designed to have string slots machined to fit the bass and strings to be retrofitted that it should be a simple matter of making these slots deep enough to compensate for the height difference, compared to a Fender stock bridge (or BA-II). I measure 3/16". What have I missed, Bill?

Did you remove the sub-plate that comes with this bridge? That will lower it quite a bit. If you didn’t get one with it and it’s still too high, then there are basically two options: 1. Shim the neck–you cna use a full pocket shim and have it tapered in the direction you need–usually this means tapered from the end of the pocket towards the bridge (i.e. thick to thin towards the body) 2. Have the pocket routed a little deeper to suit the height of the new bridge (I wouldn’t try this unless you have the right tools and know-how. Check out my web site at: http://members.home.net/wilkatguitars/ for tips on repair and maintenance. I will add an article soon on shimming necks as this is a common problem run into. In the interim you can read and follow the neck adjustment tip to see if that helps. Good luck, Bill

Greetings all, My friends and I recently started a heavy metal band. The instrument I play is the triangle. I was wondering: Where can I find good triangle lessons? I don’t want to pay for a private tutor. What is the best make of triangle and what could I get for $3. I’m going to hook up my triangle to a distortion pedal, are there many GOOD triangle distortion pedals? What type of triangle do metallica use? P.S. Electric Xylophones KICK AXX! But I can’t afford one.

I got my triangle by taking it from an elementary school band room (breaking the law breaking the law!) so you could look there first……keep practicing and if you get a good dist-pedal for your triangle post in here somewhere as to where you got it so we can start a new wave of triangle-based heavy metal!!!!! p.s.- metallica probably uses a Fender triangle!

In common with many other people, BO DIDDLEY and his family have been deeply upset by the terrorist attacks in New York, Washington DC and Pennsylvania on Tuesday September 11th 2001, and the subsequent crisis that has ensued both in America and around the world in the weeks since the attacks took place. In light of these tragedies, BO DIDDLEY has asked that his fans, radio deejays and other people working in the media should play and listen closely once more to the lyrics to a song that he recorded in 1989 titled "Wake Up America", a track that can be be found on his "Breakin’ Through The BS" CD released on Triple X Records 51017-2. In the past 20 years or so, BO DIDDLEY has recorded and released a number of songs that reflect not only his love of the American nation and and its people but also his great concerns for the country’s future stability and well-being. The songs "Ain’t It Good To Be Free" and "Gotta Be A Change" are both good examples of his impassioned vocal concerns for his nation and its people. Both of these tracks are currently available on the CD "The Mighty Bo Diddley" released on Triple X Records 51161-2. We hope that during this time of national crisis that BO DIDDLEY’s fans, together with the nation’s deejays and other people working in the media across America, will perhaps take the time to listen and to reacquaint themselves once again with the inspirational messages contained in some of these important, but perhaps lesser-played, songs that have been written and recorded by BO DIDDLEY. David Blakey, Webmaster, BO DIDDLEY-The Originator http://members.tripod.com/~Originator_2/index.html A Celebration of his unique contribution to Popular Music.

if you have a liscensed floyd rose trem, you dont have the real thing. liscensed means liscensed copy, which means inferior quality in comparison to the real deal. copys are always made with metal that is a good bit softer than the real thing. if you want the real this, it is called "original floyd rose", not "liscensed floyd rose" got the original, have it put in and you’ll the difference i guarantee:-) originals rock!!!!

i have the same problem with my fender which is fitted with a licsenced floyd rose. the problem with the cheaper ones is that the knife edges gets worn much quicker, because of the softer and much cheaper material. it is really important, to never change string height, when the strings are on, as it will result in that the pivot studs cut into the metal. you can check if the screws or knife edges are worn. just take of all the strings and the springs on the back of the guitar, and carefully remove the tremolo. look at the knife edges where the tremoloplate meets the studs. if its worn, you can try to file on the edges, until it gets smooth. you should also replace the pivot studs with new ones. that should solve the problem, at least for a while. but remember to never change string height with the strings on!

I don’t have a case, but it’s in good shape. To improve the action, it could use a little TLC on the set-up, but the appearance is great. Hello fellow rockers. Guitar Armour is the worst idea I have ever heard of. Guitars are supposed to get stratched and batterd. It wears them in and gives each guitar its own personality/identification. So don’t waste your money on this crap idea. You would be much better off spending the money on the extremely cheap guitar strings also on this sight. DEATH TO GUITAR ARMOUR

Bill, If you have big hands, you’ll have an advantage. At least in the opinion of Mr. Stubby Fingers here. I have short fingers and I have an easier time of it on short scale guitars with narrow necks. So you’re right that hand size, and finger length, are a factor. But if you watch the great guitarists who are really capable of getting a lot of music going with just two hands and one guitar (like Chuck Berry or Eric Clapton) you’ll notice that they have very long fingers. Choose your guitar to accomodate your hands and you’ll be fine. Be advised that even with big hands you’ll still have to "practice, practice, practice." Ask a knowledgeable sales person to show you guitars with longer scales (25" and up) and wider fretboards (measured at the nut starting about 1 and 7/8 inches and up). Rock on, and have some fun. : seriously. i heard that if you have big hands it be extremly hard to play gituar. is there any truth to this please e-mail me about it. No, big hands are not a disadvantage — in fact, for may it’s a big advantage (especially the guys with long fingers that can play chords that many of us can’t). In addition, there are many different neck styles and thicknesses, and widths to chose from these days. I build my guitars with a slightly wider neck than some manufacturers and the thickness and shape of the back of the neck can be flatter of rounder depending on what feels most comfortable to the player. A lot of fine guitar players are gifted with large hands, and they play all styles too — chek it out, and you’ll find this to be true. Please visit my web site at: http://members.home.net/wilkatguitars/ I post tips for setting up and repairing guitars, and will likely be adding playing tips, etc. in the future. For now, go out and check different makes and models of guitar, and go for it! I’m sure you’ll find something that feels good in your hands. If not, you can always get one built for you down the road. Good Luck, Bill

I have recently bought a Jedson S.G. shape bass guitar from a second hand shop. I bought it because it was cheap and it has a good sound. Also I love that S.G. body shape. The guy at the shop told me that it was "1970’s", and that it was well made. I wonder if anyone can tell me more about Jedson guitars and basses and perhaps help me to date and value my bass more accurately. Thanks.

I have owned several of these amps (and still have one). In general the 1982 Anniversary series does not command as high a price as the 1987 and later Anniversary series models because, although it has the distinctive color and ‘AS’ serial number info, there is nothing electronically distinctive. Not to say the amps are not in demand. In fact to the sharp Marshall person they are rare as all hell, and sound excellent. There is a 100 watt on ebay at this time, the seller has posted three times in a row with a reserve at $1999, but highest bid thus far is around $1000. Condition sounds ‘good’ with some nicks and scratches. This is a non channel switch unit. Therefore I would expect a 50 watter would be slightly less. : : I have a white 1982 20th anniversary series 4×12 half stack. I haven’t been able to get much info on this amp or its value. okay try this for starters. Kinda tricky at first. 1st)pluck a harmonic on your b (3rd up) string on the fourth fret. You kinda have to hit it almost between the 3rd and 4th frets to get it to sound. 2nd)pull up on the whammy and after this push it all the down, while you are almost all the way down put in some vibrato with the bar. The sound you are going for here is a horse whinny. practice.

i just got a new guitar day with a whammy bar… its really simple… if u turn it 2 point twoards the head of ur guitar n push it down it makes the trings go slack n if u aim it away(opposite the neck) it makes like a bending sound… hope this helps

My boyfriend has one he got that was supposedly used by Faith No More’s guitar player. It’s has Chicago series on the headstock, NO Floyd Rose and only ONE humbucker at the bridge. Can’t remeber about the knobs…and I don’t have it with me to refer to. I love this guitar! Anyone with any info please email me! Thanks guys….hope to hear from someone soon…..Ciao!

: How do I attach a guitar strap to my guitar??? from the sounds of things, it seems like you have one of those acoustics that doesnt have strap pegs/buttons on it. what you can do is.. take it to a guitar tech. my guitar tech shows up at the Guitar Center chainstore a few times a week. they are sometimes really good people and do the "chain store" thing as a part time gig to make some extra cash. but take your guitar to the guitar center… ask to see the guitar tech.. and tell him that youd like to attach strap pegs to your guitar. its a pretty simple and basic procedure. i had him drill one into my alvarez-yairi a few months back. and while it was painful to watch.. it was for the best. and he charged me like $10. he’ll probably just ask you to pay for a set of two strap pegs, which guitar center carries in its guitar parts/accessories section.. and those are really cheap. and then he’ll just charge you probably about $10 to drill them into your guitar. when you have those installed, it will be pretty elementary as to how you attach your guitar strap. hope this helps! Is that electric or acoustic? Most electrics have two small circular things like buttons, located at the very bottom of the guitar, and at the side by the top of the fretboard. You should be able to clip the strap to them. Most acoustics have these too.

I recently purchased a Korg Toneworks AX1000g Multi-effects processor, and it’s great, except on the specifications it says the maximum number of simultaneous effects is 8, when I can only figure out how to get four. So if anyone can tell me how to get 8, or at least tell me why they can advertise 8 when I think it’s only 4, I would appreciate it greatly. Oh, and this one is probably pretty obvious, but I just want to clarify: When it says I can have 80 programs, it means the 40 presest plus 40 others that you can write over the prests with. So you could really only acess 40 effects at one time. Just makin sure I’m not missingsomething.

Yea, pick up a digitech rp100 for 100 bucks..excellent and unbeatable, I think for the price (and versatility)..patches are very good in my non-professional opinion – I play mostly metal sounding stuff and blues.

Well, don`t have any multi-effectors yet, but can`t imagine they can be good and also that cheap. I think I just put some more money in it, and have some real good stuff. by the way, that id about second hand buying is also good, cause effectors don`t lose quality very quickly

Don’t bother with cheap zoom stuff. It’s unreliable and you’ll sound plasticky (in my opinion). You are better off saving for something abit better…you’ll save money in the long run. Check secondhand stuff. You might get lucky.

There are loads of acoustic brands for sale these days- but don’t necessarily go for a good brand, get a solid guitar that you like. are you starting to play or have you been playing before? you can usually get something decent for about $100…

Ok here’s the story. I’ve had this crappy acoustic guitar for 3 years and I’m still unable to play the damn thing (I’m 22 and my hands are smaller than a 6 year old’s, no joke). Being the impatient person that I am, I decided that I either want to get rid of the cheap peice of crap and then get some sort of foreign, exotic instrument that not too many people around here typically hear (that way no one knows I can’t play it, because they’re not sure how its supposed to sound, unlike a guitar!). OR… I was thinking about manipulating my crappy acoustic guitar somehow. Do something to it.. with the ol’ tool kit or something. What should I do? If I decide to play around and experiment with my guitar and making new sounds, do you know of any websites I could go to? For instance, what are the ‘physics’ of sound? How do I just ‘create’ a new instrument without ruining my guitar? If anyone has any ideas, thoughts, opinions.. or anything, please let me know! e-mail me at [email protected] I might not be able to find my way back to this discussion boards to check for reply’s.. thank you

What could be wrong when i play an open string and mute it few seconds later, something still keeps ringing quite loud and for quite long until i palm mute all the strings (the sound doesnt stop when i try to mute each string individually). It’s like the string kept ringing even after the muting. What could be wrong? Pickups? Strings?

Hmm.A tricky question. It sounds as though your left hand might be scraping the other strings. When muting the open string try rolling your palm onto the edge of your hand.It could be that you’re letting the other strings "go" prematurly. Are you using distortion? You could try turning down the dist. level.Too much dist. can produce unwanted harmonics and overtones. Also, where are you muting the strings? If your left hand is too close to the rythym pickup, you’ll get some harmonics. You might try muting closer to the bridge where the strings are tighter. Hope this helps

If I’ve understood your problem properly then what it may very well be is the string behind the nut vibrating after the rest of the strings have been muted, often you’ll find guitarists with a small piece of foam over the strings behind the nut…I do this and wrap it around the headstock and with a little piece of duct tape, tape it to the head and this works great. This basically happens with all kinds of guitars even those with floyd roses and locking nuts…try it and see if it works…just use a lite weight foam, nothing too heavy or bulky.

Hmm. Don’t think that’s the issue. The sound stops when i palm mute all the strings at the bridge and it occurs even if i keep the strings after the locking nut muted. I’m clueless 😮

courtesy of http://www.phish.net/faq/bguitar.html : Trey’s acoustic guitar was made by Michael Wentzell, whose website[http://www.cchat.com/wguitars/trey.htm] includes this description: "This guitar is a very unique combination of woods. The sides and back are made of Quilted Hon. Mahogany, the top is Larch, the bridge and bindings are made of Flamed Maple, and the rossette and headcap are also of Quilted Mahogany. The neck is Hon. Mahogany and the fingerboard is ebony."

Hi all, My Digitech 2120 has blown up. I need some new parts, but Arbiter in the UK, Digitech’s dealer, are really mucking me about. Does anyone know of somewhere else I can get hold of parts, even from the US or elsewhere? Thanks, Steve

Hola!! This is normal: this is the "larsen" sound!! When you are too close to your computer, there is a larsen… You have to be far from your PC…
