I have an Epiphone FT 135, Serial Number 143842, Made in Japan that I have had for 25 years. It was given to me as a young teenager. It may have been played 5 times. I have kept it all these years for no real reason. Does anyone know what the value might be so that I can sell it. The search engine on the Epiphone Web site is not available yet and a general search on the Web led me to this site only. Any feedback is appreciated. Thank you.

I don’t no either what an Artificial ‘tap’ harmonic is but an Artificial Harmonic is…
There are several special techniques in guitar playing which enable you to sound one selected harmonic while at the same time silencing the louder fundamental and also the other harmonics. This is known as playing artificial harmonics.
Let’s take the simplest example. By lightly fingering an open string over the 12th fret, you divide it into two equal lengths. When you then play the string, you get an artificial harmonic one octave above the open string. In the context of artificial harmonics, this octave note – not the fundamental – is called the first harmonic.
What happens is this. Fingering the string creates a node or node point where the string does not vibrate at alL This alters the vibration pattern that the open string would otherwise produce and stops the fundamental and other harmonics from sounding. On either side of the node, the two equal lengths of the string then vibrate out of phase with one another and produce the artificial harmonic. The points at which the string vibrates mcst are called the anti-nodes. There are several places on the string where artificial harmonics can be played. When you play an open string it vibrates along its whole length but by playing artificial harmonics you divide the string so it vibrates in equal lengths depending on the harmonic.

: APX 4A; Excellent guitar for those with small hands, sounds wonderful, the electrics I am assured are sound. It cost cost me 00 bucks 4 years ago in Britain and costs more now.
: I have played guitar for over 25 years and I just bought the Yamaha APX-4A. This is one of the finest instruments I have played, regardless of price. I paid 50 american, so 00 is not too bad. Make sure to have a technition look it over before you buy and just make sure you don’t get a lemon. I have heard they have a few that have small problems. Make sure you select the guitar from 3-4 different guitars of the same exact model number.
: Please feel free to call me if you have any questions. I have 7 guitars and this one replaces some very expensive guitars in my live show. Extremely versatile and unsurpassed sound.

I’m sure Yamaha is a good company, but could somebody who knows tell me how good they are, how could this specific model is, and how good this price is? Where does Yamaha rate in the guitar world? Mettallica if it was all about the fans then why would you take away alittle bit of free music, what about those who aren’t as forinet as others?you make money out the azz,and sure you have to take that and pay of this person and that but you still have quite abit ,i mean look at you, your band, your homes,cars,ect..You don’t appreciate the fans and it’s not about the fans,it’s about your f***in money, you took the only thing that was free to us,i have spent alot of money on Mettallica t-shirts,cd’s even tapes when they where popuar, vhs tapes, ticketsand for what,to find out that you as Mettallica had lied to the FANS,you lied to your fans and i hope that sales drop for you……. sherry

: : : I agree totally with this. There is nothing like the ‘real cd’ to have in your collection. MP3’s dont offer the best in music quality – So if you want to play it in your car’s CD player or somewhere, you need to buy the cd.

: : : Is there any programs like napster available, does anybody know?
: : : Jase
: : :
: : : : studies show napster users buy more music than the average person. napster doesn’t discourage music purchases, it encourages it. first of all, unless you have a cable modem like me or the equivilent, it takes forever to download. once it is downloaded, it is an mp3 on your computer. unless you have a CD burner, you can’t take it off your computer. so most people are just sampling the music on the computer anyway. many songs i have downloaded off napster have had errors in them, clicking, popping, and noises. you get what you pay for. assume i have a CD burner, and download and make my own CD. i still just have a blank CD, no liner notes, no label. i concede, someone can print their own label, but for the most part, users are sampling music only. When they find something they like they go out and buy it. What the recording industry wants to avoid, if the public finding out that a CD has only one decent song on it, and the rest it filler. They want to maintain the right to sell us worthless garbage. not to mention the quiky and new stuff you can get from napster and no where else. eminem released a bootleg himself on napster. unreleased southpark sounds. anything. dont hate napster, hate metallica. metallica is the judas iscariot of the year 2000. i have spoken: There is a substitute for napster that also allows u to download videos and pictures aswell as mp3z its called imesh and u can get it at http://www.imesh.com

I have an idea for. The metal zone is not helping you. Chances are (if those crate speakers are oringinal) you may want to invest into some better speakers. Celestrians are a good choice. I reconfigured my cabinet with 2 15"inch speakers, and 2 12"inch speakers, the 2 12’s are originals. Those 15"s will add the perfect bottom for that distortion u are looking for. Smooth bass with a very heavy cruch on the top. Perfect blend.

I like Gibson Guitars , Especially a light weight SG,
Jacksons are good also but for a real work horse that holds its tone with the tuneamatic bridge it is hard to beat a Gibson. Replacing Pickups is alot of trouble when a person could just pick up and play with a new guitar that better suited thier needs. -

The PUs are made of Alnico, so much is clear. I read (on Harmony Central) that it’s Alnico V, but there are pickups on the market that use Alnico II (e.g. Seymour Duncan), so one cannot be sure. Apart from that the pickups are standard single coils, with the exception that (judging from the absence of hum in positions 2 and 4), the middles one is a RW/RP type.

Ok. First set your Metal Zone pedal to the Trash metal seting. Run it into your amp through the clean chanel. Set you knobs on the clean chanel to this. Bass 10 Mids 0-4 Treb to what you like. Then tune your guitar. The lower the tuning the heaver you will sound.

: : I really need help with my sound, it sounds shitty but I have good hardcore gear, I have a boss mt-2 metal zone, an Ibanez rg 520QS, a digitech whammy, and a zoom 3000s multieffects processer, and my amps a crate gx-600 half stack I run everything through my input on my amp Is that a mistake please reply
:
: Try running the stuff through your fx loop. It’s generally better, but I don’t know if it will make your sound "harder".I think one problem is that you are using a metal zone. I have a metal zone and really don’t prefer it. So many things sound better. I think, also, that Crate is not so good for a good sound. Try a Marshall head and use the distortion on the amp instead of a pedal.

: : I own a 79 les paul custom and a 1978 JMP 100 watt marshall head with a marshall 4×12 cab with celestion speakers. Two are 30 watt and two are 70 watt. Any ideas for popular or famous tones with this set-up? I don’t mind using pedals or any tricks. Any help out there? Helpful websites or anything? Thanks!
Take your guitar, a high quality cord and the marshall, plug them in and crank it up! The sound a marshall produces only comes with volume. There is no pedal that will make that sound. -

: I was wondering if anyone could give me information on Gretsch guitars. I am specifically looking for a country Gretsch, or something along that line. It is really a specific sound I am trying to find. The kind of Rockabilly/wailing Cure sound. Does anybody know of what kind of model or country Gretsch I would need to be searching for, and if so could you tell me what price range I am going to be looking at for a guitar like this. I know the hollow body Gretsch’s can run pretty high.
: I would appreciate your input.
I have a Gretsch Country Club Model No. 7576 – Natural, with the gretsch case. I took it to a music museum for an appraisal. I was told it was made in the early 1970’s and the value is at least ,000 without the case. I need the money and am selling it with the case for ,000. If you are interested, please email me. Thanks. P.S. I don’t have a digital camera, otherwise I would send a picture. It is in excellent shape. My daughter-in-law has a digital camera, possibly I can get her to take a picture. Is. blond and the neck has mother of pearl square in lays and all the tuning hardware is in gold. It does not have a vibrato, but you can get one and easily put it in. Thanks

What makes you think you deserve something for free. You are the scum of the earth…Fucking wake up….nothing is for free in this world…How about getting a job and paying for a fucking CD….when I grew up I used work my ass off so that I could go get the next Madien Album….It would be good for you…

: I agree totally with this. There is nothing like the ‘real cd’ to have in your collection. MP3’s dont offer the best in music quality – So if you want to play it in your car’s CD player or somewhere, you need to buy the cd.
: Napster should be allowed to live on.
: Is there any programs like napster available, does anybody know?
: Jase
:
: : studies show napster users buy more music than the average person. napster doesn’t discourage music purchases, it encourages it. first of all, unless you have a cable modem like me or the equivilent, it takes forever to download. once it is downloaded, it is an mp3 on your computer. unless you have a CD burner, you can’t take it off your computer. so most people are just sampling the music on the computer anyway. many songs i have downloaded off napster have had errors in them, clicking, popping, and noises. you get what you pay for. assume i have a CD burner, and download and make my own CD. i still just have a blank CD, no liner notes, no label. i concede, someone can print their own label, but for the most part, users are sampling music only. When they find something they like they go out and buy it. What the recording industry wants to avoid, if the public finding out that a CD has only one decent song on it, and the rest it filler. They want to maintain the right to sell us worthless garbage. not to mention the quiky and new stuff you can get from napster and no where else. eminem released a bootleg himself on napster. unreleased southpark sounds. anything. dont hate napster, hate metallica. metallica is the judas iscariot of the year 2000. i have spoken -

I dont know how they did this but basically the price is the same in any store that is an authorized Boogie Dealer in the country. That list is available from Mesa Boogie and can be down loaded from their web site or sent to you by calling the company and requesting a catalog!

The Guitar Center in Dallas was authorized by Mesa/Boogie to clear their existing stock at substantial savings during their Labor Day "List" sale. I bought a Maverick 212 combo for $800. I don’t know if that deal is still valid, since this is usually a one day event, but they had several items at killer deals.

: IM A BEGINNER AND HAVE BEEN SHOPPING FOR A GUITAR.I FOUND A JOHNSON GUITAR WITH MARTIN STRINGS FOR A HUNDRED BUCKS. MY QUESTION IS, IS IT A DECENT GUITAR OR SHOULD I SPEND ANOTHER HUNDRED BUCKS OR SO AND GET A WELL KNOWN GUITAR? SINCERELY,A MOTIVATED BEGINNER.
Definitely spend more.
If you’re just a total beginner, I really recommend learning on acoustic, but if you want an elecric, look for a good quality used instrument or a new entry level instrument. I recommend the following electrics:Fender Standard (Mexican) series Strat or Tele (you may want to put new pickups in eventually
or if you’re more of a metalhead check out
Jackson Performance sereies PS-2 (I own one) or PS4, etc. These a GREAT guitars even when compared to instruments twice their price. Great High output pickups for metal and the single coils in the PS2 are very nice too.

: I have an old guitar and I was thinking (dangerous) … Why not restring my 6-string with 7-string strings (confused yet) I mean, strings 7-2, or course, I would sacrificing the high E string to the Gods of low tone, however… isnt that the point… Question is… would this work on a six string, or is there something magic about 7 strings… I have a floyd rose liscenced double locking tremolo if thats an issue…. What do you guys think ???
: thanks, ME
Exactly what I did…I didn’t buy 7-string strings, though, just a heavy set of 6 (11-48). we have about three tunes that we play in this tuning (including a cover of Dream Theater’s "The Mirror") and it works fine….It has even opened up my soloing ideas on the uppper neck.

: Epiphones are usually made of cheaper wood, silly pickups, and fingerboards just not real quality stuff.
: Les Pauls, however are usually made of Mahagony(hard, beautiful wood). Pickups are good Gibson stock.Made in U.S.A.Fretboards are either rosewood or ebony(good stuff).Paul necks are also shaped better.Remember,Epiphone is the low-end brother of Gibson,so while their product is O.K.,it’s not high quality of Gibson.
: Hope this helpsActually, I have to correct you, the Epiphones are Mahagony wood, but it is true that the overall craftmanship is not as high quality. I owned an Epiphone Les Paul Standard and it was a beautiful instrument, and I often wish I still had it. I would say the biggest difference sonicallly is the pickups. I think you could get an epi les paul, put some great picups in it (like Seymor Duncans, DiMarzios, or EMG’s) and have a serious ass-kicking guitar.

: I’ve learned most of their songs and realized that
: many of the tabs out there are garbage.Hey! I actually did a lot of those tabs (about 10 years ago)
: If anyone knows the accurate way to play
: William it was really nothing
: (i saw this one tabbed in a British magazine,
: but i don’t know how to find it.)That’s a tough one. If you capo at the 5th fret, I think it’s easier, but it involves hammer on C shapes, which is very difficult. I’m pretty sure he did this in an alternate tuning.
: or:
: some girls are bigger than others?
Try a capo at 2nd fret and play:
For the verse:
Am C G (you may need to use different colorings, e.g. leave the high e open on the g)
chorus/tunaround:
F Em7
That’s approximately it. The big resolving chord is a C.

I think you need to appreciate there music. Its kind of like "Yes" their totally awsome album Close To The Edge, the first time
I heard I said this is shit. The second time, I recognised a few cool parts. The third time, I started listening to the lyrics, and from then
on I knew I loved that band. Now back to Floyd. There music is highly experimental, and spacey, the lyrics telling tales of insanity, and mysterious wonders.
I think i really struck a chord in the 70’s, and sadly its failed to bring a teenage crowd, except the druggies, in the 90’s. Watching thee PULSE video is
amasing, how fuckin awsome is that video? It rules. Although Pink Floyd still is around, contantly in my house, I think only some dedicated teens truly appreciate
the music, and I am one of them. There are about 3 songs I dislike being of Floyd. Thats it after all their albums thats it. Many will critisize what happened with Water
after the final cut, I won’t, I see it as a changing point in pink floyd. The lyrics changed to a happier state, and the music kept its atmosphere. It grows on you
I mean, in ten years who the hell thinks they will remember eminem or dr. dre? Only the few good bands remain, Pink Floyd being on of them with nearly 40 years
of being around and still being able to kick the ass of all the stupid rap singers. When the value of a BAND still is there concern, not some faggy boys singing
to a keyboard. Without a doubt Pink Floyd is not boring, of course your going to get the stupid mother fuckers who think that cause it was made in the 70’s it sucks
or that any 20 minute song isn’t worth lisening to, are just that, stupid mother fuckers. Pink Floyd will no doubt get smaller crowds as it goes into the next generation
but it will survive, the music is inspiring and beautiful, not many bands can re-create the kind of atmostphere that Pink Floyd can, waters and gilmour together made
some great cookies, that fed the world. Once part of the recipie (waters) left it changed into a different kind of "cookie" still just as tastey to me though. Pink Floyd is
not boring to people who are of the right mind, or open minded shall I say. Pink Floyd is the best thing to hit the music stands ever, evan moreso than hendrix I believe
IN FLOYD WE TRUST.
: How boring are Pink Floyd? Find out soon in GNW this week… Subscribe now (free – go to the front page of GuitarSite.com) What do you think? Do PF excite you? Did they ever? Or did/do you play them on grey Sunday afternoons then want to go away & quietly hang yourself… (no offence guys, just trying to provoke a response here… 😉-

: Modes are simply names for major scales in each scale step.EXAMPLE(G major)G=1st step,Ionian mode,A=2nd step,
: Dorian mode,B=3rd step,Phrigian mode,ect.,ect.Assuming that you already know the pentatonics(+ 1/2 steps)the trick is to relate the major modes to your Blues scales(A minor). The answer lies within the problem, dig it??
: Book:Scales & modes for guitar players RON MIDDLEBROOK"modes" is a derivative of "moods" and means just that. start a scale on each of the different notes, emphasizing that note as a starting and ending point, and feel the difference in mood. that’s the basis, but once you mess around, theres more

there are so many things you could do with your setup. i know that ace frehley of KISS used a similar
setup, exept he had a full stack. if you like metal, you can duplicate many of the tones conjured up by
black sabbath, sammy hagar, and creed. the ’78 marshall head is pretty versatile, so with the various
tone and gain controls you can make any guitar sound there is. play with it, that’s the best way to
figure it out.

: : Instead of spending a fortune on each pedal, I was looking at those multi effects pedals you can get, with like 33 or more effects.
: : Anyone tried them or know of someone who has? Let me know your opinion.
: THE BIG QUESTION IS ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A FLOORBOARD FX PROCESSOR OR A PRE-AMP FLOOR BOARD FX PROCESSOR(WITH DISTORTION AND SUCH) AND ARE YOU GOIN TO RUN IT THROUGH THE FX LOOP OR THROUGH THE FRONT OF THE AMP? MANY OF THE STOMP BOXES PEOPLE USE ARE DESIGNED TO BE USED IN THE FRONT OF THE AMP AS WELL ARE MANY OF THE PRE AMP FX DEALS AS APOSSED TO USING THE FX LOOP (IF YOU HAVE ONE). SO WHAT KIND OF AMP ARE YOU USING AND DO YOU INTEND ON USING THE DISTORTION FROM THE AMP?
: THIS IS WHAT SUCKS ABOUT THE INDUSTRY THEY DO EVERY THING BACKWARDS. WHAT REALLY SUCKS IF WHEN YOU ARE USING BOTH AND YOU GET SICK OF HAVING SO MANY SPEGETTI CHORDS AROUND YOUR ANKLES. I WOULD FIND A STORE WITH A SALES PERSON WHO KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT AND START ASKING QUESTIONS. ALSO CHECK OUT A WEB SITE CALLED( GUITAR AMP TONE AND EFFECTS PLACEMENT )THIS MAY HELP.Research is the key dont spend your hard earned dough until you know its going to work. Bring your own eqiupment down to the store and try it out. Any store thats worth your time/money and the priveledge of having you shop there as a repeat customer will indulge you. Zakk A few words of advice, to take or leave as you like. I dont see why you would need a Boss metal zone pedal with your triple rectifier. Unless you are unable to turn it up past one because they are so loud!(The mesa triple rectifier has one hundred and fifty watts in the power amp Thats huge!!!!!.I play in a hard rock band in CA and I use a 60 watt Mesa dual calliber This is plenty loud for stage use. Besides thats what PA’s are for. Its better to let a sound man mike your cab and dial in the right Volume for the venue as opposed to the sound man battling to bring his rig up to your volume. I hate to say it but 100 watts is pretty much all you would ever really need. Its kind of like having a hot rod that you cant ever really take up to 150mph. Using a lower wattage amp will help obtain a hard driving tone at a reasonable listening level, something to consider?????). Anyways Mesa makes great products!
I used to have a Tremloverb Head and those are actually a dual rectifier with reverb and tremlo thrown in to boot plus some cosmetic changes. This is what I would do. Turn the rectifier selector switch on the back to silicon diode this will emphasize attack in a chunky percussive sence vs.the natural attack of the tube rectifier. Now use the modern select on the red channel.I’ve used mesa amps for a few years now and those in the know tend to agree that you dont have to turn the gain up to ten to make a mesa roar. The gain design in mesa products is designed to work well at moderate settings( unlike tha marshall mind set 11 ) For your sound probably set it at 8.This amp is designed and tuned to be focused on hard core metal tone. The key to this is, a metal tone thats still musical. A chain saw thats been oiled if you get my meaning. Moderate bass and treble settings and the mids you can turn down to 2-3 allthough with this particular anp you might want to turn the mids up I’m serious "experiment" . Now I didnt catch what kind of cabinet you are running this through But the Mesa
4 by 12 Rectifier cab will round out the tone nicely . It was made for these heads and is a important link in the chain .They are closed back and project some serious thump. Also what kind of guitar are you playing through. Single coil pickups do not in my opinion have the beef needed to fulfill this type of tone (dont get me wrong I love single coil pickups Just not for metal). I would use a well made guitar with humbuckers
You can ask around and see what others are using. I like a bright treble pickup on the bridge for chunky metal riffs and metal rythm and a fat sounding neck pickup for high on the neck leads and Clean tone thats warm and full. Another thing to keep in mind in the greater scheme of things is that the bands you may be listening to are probably using all the tools at their disposal in the recording studio. This means the heavy sounding riffs that are the end product that you buy are much more than just one track of their favorite amp.Multple tracks of the same riffs played through one or more of the same or diferent amps alltogether then FX processed compressed and EQ mixed and mastered thats alot to compete with as a Guitar player ( yet thats the beauty of getting to do a project in the studio, you can and will push every envelope to its maximum, Time and money pending) . You get my point I’m sure. If I were you I would concentrate on getting Tight with your band and focus on the basics. If you find you cant get the tone your looking for out of that amp Keep shopping but buyers beware The path of constantly trading in gear is a losing road for your pockett book. Shop hard and smart and dont be afraid to buy used gear if you can find what you want. You can save alot on some nice equipment if you are patient.

Also, check out the Tradition series dreadnoughts from Dean. Low price; Big, rich sound. I’ve had Martin owners scratching their head wondering why they paid so much. Best advice, play ’em all first and decide which is best for YOU !!! If you order from a warehouse or outlet where it’s shipped to you, make sure they have a return policy if you’re not satisfied. : they just ain’t what they used to be are they?…the wall was definitely a swan song for the floyd’s in my humble opinion, even though there was still the final cut with roger, it just didn’t do much for me i’m afraid…and for the floyd’s without rog…forget it!..the schizophrenic edge that marked their best works from the old "syd days" to the wall are long gone, taking one of the best dynamic elements away from a band who lived in their theatrical use of dynamicism…to anyone thinking of buying a new floyd album i say take that money and finish collecting the rest of the works with rog, including the syd barrett one’s so you can see for yourself how boring and semi-lifeless the new stuff appears to be….and i love gilmour’s playing…but it just isn’t the same, and never will be….even if roger was to come back, that moment has passed, and it wouldn’t be the same ever again… -

You should get a video. I used the Guitar Now video 1 and 2 to get started. It might seem corny but it is a good video for starting out. then I got Fret board Logic it is very helpfull in teaching the fret borad Chords Scales etc. very good video also get the books that go with the videos. and from there pick a certin type of music you would like to play and buy videos on that subj. IE. blues rock country jazz etc. the fret bord logic videos will help out a lot but first start wit Guitar Now. It will give you a good understanding on how to play.

: I have recently been looking around for an acoustic guitar in the 00-00 range and after determining that electronics weren’t that important to me, I went through hundreds of acoustics and finally I have narrowed it down to either the Guild D4 or the Martin DM.
: I played both these guitars extensively and I just can’t decide which one suits my needs the best. I really like the woodier tone of the guild, but the Martin has a really great balanced tone and feels nicer around the neck, with slightly better action than the Guild.
: If there is anyone out there with experience in both of these guitars, please help, or if you want to confuse me even more, suggest a better guitar than either of these two for under 00.

Martin has just come out with a new all wood modle for about 700bucks its called the D-16GT Its almost like the SPD-16 but it does not have a line in the back. the two pice back are just joined togatehr. you might also want to check out the D-15 its an all wood guitar for about 565 bucks http://WWW.mandoweb.com that includes a case a wooden martin case.

: : I USE A MESA BOOGIE TRIPLE RECTIFIER WITH A BOSS METAL ZONE AND A BOSS EQ.MY QUESTION IS HOW DO I GET THE CRUNCH SOUND OUT WHEN I PALM MUTE.I WANT A FEAR FACTORY OR PANTERA SOUND.WHEN I PALM MUTE I WANT IT TO HAVE A HARD CHUNK SOUND.
All right dude:
I have the same pedals but a different amp. I have a fender Deville that has 4 10’s in it. Your Mesa will already have extra bass so you may have to compensate a bit. Fist of all DON’T take out all of the mid frequencies. Yes, they should be lower but the mids are what give you the thick tone like Zakk Wyldes solo tone back when he played with Ozzy. mids are very important. Sinc you have the boss eq pedal and Metal Zone I will tell you what settings mine are at and then you can play from there.
Metal Zone:
High-9:30, Low-1:00, Middle-3:30, Mid freq-1:00, Distortion-2:00
Boss Equalizer:
100: +3, 200: +4, 400: -7.5, 800: -7.5, 1.6K: +3, 3.2K: -7.5, 6.4K: 0.
Try these out. The equalizer is really nice for developing you mids. you can see that 400 and 800 are dropped to get the crunchy sound but boos the 1.6 to get screaming solos and very rich distortion. Play even more with the let your Mesa develop the highs and lows. Write me back and let me know how the stuff worked out. Later

Zakk, My advice is first, that though the Metal Zone is probably the best distortion PEDAL you really ought to rely on the Rectifier’s distortion…James Hetfield for one does, he only uses built-in amp distortion be cause it sounds more "Real" and I tend to agree. Like the previous writer said, you probably just haven’t been able to crank it high enough to get that killer metal tone. Also, you may want to customize your pickups…. Seymor Duncan, Dimarzio (my personal fav) and EMG all make great high output pickups which will increase the amount of distortion you’ll get (in a natural sounding way). My second piece of advice is to consider going RACK. I am a longtime metalhead (though I am now moving more into the progressive metal area) and I have found after alot of gear buying and swapping that the head/cab game is VERY LIMITING. Get a good tube preamp (like the Mesa Triaxis, Marshall JMP-1 or even preamp processors like the Digitech 21-series or Rocktrons) and a good power amp…either tube or a good tube emulating power amp (the Marshall valvestate power amps are GREAT and the Tubeworks MOSVALVE series which I use personally.) This will give you alot more flexibility (going from lush stereo cleans to heavy distorion) and you can get really heavy sounds (at lower volumes too because the preamp is doing more of the work) anyway, that’s my two cents…. if you want an idea of my sound check out my band at http://www.ProfaneOath.com. All of the clips on there were recorded using my Digitech 2120 preamp and Mosvalve power amp. I have since added the Marshall JMP-1 for distortions which gives it a little warmer sound. Spencer

I don’t use an rp 2000 but I had the same feeling about my rp 7 once I figured out exactly what it does and doesn’t do. I do like it direct to headphones and I use it for some direct recording. When I do use it in my rig I only use the very basics – chorus, compression, tuner. The auto mute tuner is the BEST thing it does live though…lol

August 1, 2000 at 10:31 pm #27403AnonymousGuest
I agree with the just use the amp distortion theory. I don’t know a lot about mesa amps, but that rig should be able to rip anyones head off. I think I’d drop everything (eq) and just use a cord.
-
August 1, 2000 at 5:35 pm #27400AnonymousGuest
Here’s what i like to do:
1) achieve the basic metal form by cranking up the high and low frequencies on the eq and dropping middle
‘V’ shape
2) then do the same with my amp, and turn the high down until i get a nice crunchnow if you turn high down too much the sound will become muddy, having it too high makes the sound too earsplitting. this works for me, basically i use eq just for the basic form and then finetune with my amp, i’m not sure if this will give you the sound you’re looking for though.

christ thats a hot setup!!!!!!!!!!
well, not that kinda metal sound, use either just the amp distortion or the pedal thru the clean channel. basically, lows and highs 10, mids 0. lots of gain. also try rolling back the tone knob on ur guitar a little if u want. i dont know much bout eq pedals so maybe leave it out and just use the pedal or amp eq’s.
by the way, how much did that setup cost!?! wherebouts r ya? what kinda guitar u got? i NEED a mesa triple rectifier! im in australia and im worried about the 416438041643804164380 needed : )

Any other RP2000 users? I just picked one up,Mid-July.
The thing really has a crappy sound. I used it with a Marshall 412,GK 212,and just direct through headphones.
The functionality and tones are just sickening.
Switching banks is a pain (hold the "up" to go "down").
I think Zoom uses much better chips in their stuff.

: Ive been playing for about 3 weeks on a lil Epiphone FT-135 I had in the basement and Im loving life–but now I want to get a newer guitar. Can someone recommend an accoustic or accoustic/electric that I can pickup for under 200 buck YOur best option for under 200 to get an acoustic sound (especially if you are doing any live work) is to get the Fishman power bridge. This will fit into any Strat or Tele style guitar and sends an electric/acoustid sound from the piezo pickup in the bridge to either an amp or PA via one side of a stereo splitter cable. It also sends the signal from your electric pickups via the other side. I recently had this installed on my Telecaster, and it gives me incredible versatility to be able to swith to the acoustic pickup. It doesn’t sound like a miced acoustic, it sounds like a GOOD acoustic electric (much like an ovation in my opinion) plus you get the playability of an electric. Spencer

Epiphones are usually made of cheaper wood, silly pickups, and fingerboards just not real quality stuff.
Les Pauls, however are usually made of Mahagony(hard, beautiful wood).
Hope this helps -

Not too familiar with Fender DeVille amps, but if you got a 60’s Strat.,thats cool. What year?? These guitars have remarkably warm yet shimmering tone.Strats, however are temperamental axes. From hot climate to air conditioning can play havok with tuning.Bending notes too hard, swinging them, grabbing them can cause neck to shift out of position.Strats play best at medium action
Most of these were made from alder wood, which gives it
warmth and color. Also they were sun-dried for 3-5yrs.(?),so wood is totally dry and light.Remember, the pickups back then were hand wound,so each strat. has it’s own sound. When coil wire is crossed,over-lapped,or
dented,it can change the guitar’s tone.I would try a dozen or so before I settle on one.PLEASE,PLEASE,don’t
modify it(i.e. Humbuckers,locking bridge ect.ect.)the
Mona Lisa doesn’t need more paint. As far as moneys worth, that’s up to you.Take care of your axe(wrap neck),put it back in case when not used and play it
well!!
Good Luck,Stratman! -

To your first question , I’d say no. Notes of any particular scale are repeated or rearranged as you move up the neck(MODES).The only things that change are the pitch and the fingerings. So, if a preson says
"I played the solo in 7th position" he/she is really saying they played an E scale in the 7th step(Aolian Mode),it’s really the same notes.
To your second question the answer is yes and no.Yes you would land on a different root note(Mode). But the sound would be a little different. An E note played on the G string(9th fret)sounds a little different than E
note on the D string (14th fret). This is because the D string is thicker.
Hope this helps. -

I agree totally with this. There is nothing like the ‘real cd’ to have in your collection. MP3’s dont offer the best in music quality – So if you want to play it in your car’s CD player or somewhere, you need to buy the cd.
Napster should be allowed to live on.

Martin makes an excellent acoustic guitar. However, if you plan on spending less than 500 then you better look elsewhere. Otherwise you are paying for name.
I recommend a solid wood guitar. Larrivee makes very good solid wood guitars for that price range and up. Also a used Taylor 300 or 400 series would fit the bill. You mentioned playability. Taylor has excellent playability.
I’m personally not a big fan of Guild acoustics anymore. Hope this helps.: I have recently been looking around for an acoustic guitar in the 00-00 range and after determining that electronics weren’t that important to me, I went through hundreds of acoustics and finally I have narrowed it down to either the Guild D4 or the Martin DM.

I hear people saying that for example, if I’m playing in E, I was playing the lead in 3rd, 5th, or 7th, position, I’m confused on this, and if I move to these positions, do I need to flat or sharp certain notes at that position. Also if I play the same notes as the root note position as I do in the say 7th, won’t I get the same sound, or is it that you would land on different root notes for these positions?
PLEASE HELP< TOTALLY CONFUSED!!! -

okay a little test for you. Put a set of 11’s on your guitar tune to lowBEADGB. Sound like crap? Okay loosen the springs up. Retune. Sound like crap. Are the strings vibrating freely or hitting frets. You may have to raise them. Retune. Keep doing this. You may get it to sound right. 7strings are built and setup for it. There pickups are made specially for them(atleast ibanez are). This may take awhile. Just play around.

Duncan makes very good pick-ups.The SH-4 is fat sounding, warm and clear.SH-5(custom)is one of my favorites. It’s not as powerful as some(14.5-15K ohms)but when cranked, has razor sharp clarity and really screams.Bill Lawerence pick-ups are sharp, hot, and nasty.Dmarzio PAF pro is best pick-up they make.

: Thanks for your advice Punk-a-Billy. If I did decide to get an Epiphpone should I get the standard or the custom and what kind of replacement pick-ups do you recomend and How muchare they 4164380$ ?
Firstly, a new Gibby LP standard will run you about
000 plus/minus depending on which model ( Std, Classic or my current favorite the Raw Power); you
get spend a lot on pickups with the difference between
the price of an epi and a gibson. A used Gibson might
be more comparable pricewise to an EPi plus pickups
but will still be a lot more ( prices I see where I
live are in the 000-400 used). Now if you went to
a LP Studio you’re talking around 100 new, it’s got the same pu’s as a Standard but no binding on the body or the neck, smaller inlays.Pickup-wise epi’s are hit or miss, some of them are
ok, some not. I wouldn’t automatically replace them
until I lived with awhile. I recently bought a used
Epi LP standard that had a EMG 81 in the bridge and
what turned out to be a stock Epi hummer in the neck.
I had the tech do setup before I took it home and he
thought since the previous owner had replace one pu
he might have replaced the other one because it sounded
pretty good. He pulled the pu and was suprised it was
stock. His comment was "you won’t believe it". But he
did say that some of them "have nothing going".At any rate, I’ve replaced both pickups with Dimarzio
PAF’s ( I already had ’em) and it sounds very nice.
New you should be able to get a pair for about 10
or 120; Seymour Duncan’s would run about 0-40 bucks
more a pair probably. I would highly suggest having
the pots and switch replaced at the same time, it’ll
make a big difference also.No idea what a tech would charge for that work, I do
my own ( I’m slow but I get it done :^) ). Ask at a
local shop or two to get the best idea of the prices.I had a ’69 Les Paul Deluxe back in the 70’s and while
I’d probably prefer that, for the money I’m happy with
the Epi. But I did play a bunch of Epi’s before I finally bit on the one I bought….Good luck,
Doug

: : I’m looking for nylon saddles to replace the metal ones on my Epiphone Sheraton ll Guitar. Can anyone help me.
Graph tech makes graphite saddles for the various
tunematic bridges. Depending on exactly what bridge
you Epi has you might be able to use the gibson nylon
saddles. If your bridge has the adjustable thumb
wheels like a Gibson they *should* fit; they won’t
if you have the bridge that has the larger posts
that you need a screwdriver to adjust. No idea where
you can get the gibson ones though. Why change them? I had a Les Paul that had the nylon
saddles and it didn’t sound very good with them. Much
better sustain and tone with metal saddles imho. But
it’s pretty impossible to break strings with the nylon
tho, but you can break the saddles.I don’t know how the graphite saddles sound from my
own experience, I;ve heard both pro and con about them..Doug

This is for all you vintage pedal owners.TAKE SPECIAL CARE OF YOUR STOMP-BOXES! Alot of techs. don’t want to fix these boxes because there’s no money in it, and don’t want to bother. And if you do want them fixed, it’ll cost you your first born child. Over the past couple of years I’ve practiced "SAFE EFFECTS" managment.
When not in use, store your boxes in a sandwich-bag or
somthing.Dirt and moisture can wreak havok on the resistors ,diods, and circuitry.A lot of components are
carbon based, air can also effect them.
Beware of people auctioning these boxes.Look at picture
of pedal. This should tell you if the pedal has been abused.Flood them with questions,if you are already familiar with the unit.
Use the proper adaptor, always.Certain pedals may have different VOLTAGE, AMPERAGE requirements.Using the wrong adaptor can either FRY your pedal or cause it not to function properly.
I give "THE FINGER" to all you lazy-assed techs who won’t help us out. I give "TWO FINGERS" to Roland(BOSS)
Their web site sucks and they’re difficult to deal with!!
Good luck, watch your back fellow players -

well want to tune low. Do you use an alternate tuning already? If you don’t adjust your guitar correctly it will sound like complete garbage. Have you ever played a 7string? I vowed I would never buy one but every time I play one I come closer. I love them. Now my everyday in a band tuning is crop C(lowCGCFAD), I love that. A six string can be adjusted although it might take you some time. There will be less tension on the neck, you will have to adjust the springs, and string height.

: All I want on my guitar is a humbucker (Dimarzio-PAF), a volume knob, and a selector switch (no tone knobs). I want the selector switch to operate only in the bridge position. I want the sound to cut-off once I move the switch (ala EVH "You really Got Me"-solo). I know that he used a Les Paul, but I want to wire my Strat-style guitar as I described. Can anybody help?
It all depends on how the guitar is routed? Is it throught the front, or through the back. Dimarzio, gives instructions, on how to wire the pickup, to the pot. Well you really don’t need a toggle switch, what you really want, is a kill switch, that cuts power to the guitar, its something that could be easily screwed up. You should ethier get a book on wiring and soldering, or bring it to a trained tech, and pay a kings ransom. Get the Stewart Mcdonald catalog, at stew-mac.com, they have books, and tools that could help you. Its a very tough job, you have to know what you are doing. By the way, Eddie never recorded with a Les Paul, and he has nevered played live with one. He owns an LP custom, but he keeps it locked away. During his early period, he used a steinberger, a Flying V, Frankenstein (Kramer/Charvel/EDDIE), and a Ibanez Explorer copy, which I believe he used in "You Really Got Me"

Well Squires have only been made since 1986, so it some where between that time, and the time you bought it. Gibson.com has info on Gibsons. Gibson has very consistent serial numbers, so you could find out easily. If you want more info, call there 24/7 help line, and somebody could give you enough info to choke a horse.

Does anybody know of a website that i can type in the serial number and find out the age of my squier strat and my gibson SG?
-
July 28, 2000 at 11:17 am #27297AnonymousGuest
Although i have been a Les paul fan for many years the new gibsons don’t seem up to the standard they set in the 50’s and 60’s. I have an epi and it sounds great but i am going to replace the tuners not the pickups. The body is solid, the tone is great, and the flame top looks amazing the best advice i have is go out and play and buy the one you like. Don’t buy a guitar because it says gibson or fender or martin buy a guitar because it sounds good and makes you play well.

Idont know if the same dunlop company makes the cheap sporting goods or not, but I do know that dunlop does make some pretty good quality music gear like awsome effects pedals that were used by jimmi hendrix, eric clapton, joe satriani… (Crybaby wah-wah pedal, jimmi hendrix fuzz wah, fuzz face). They also make picks slides and abunch of other stuff.
hope you feel better -

I got a squire pro tone strat about three years ago and I’m trying to find out what kind of pick ups it has. It sounds great with my marshall amp if i play it clean or distorted. It doesn’t give out a really thin sound like the pick ups on the cheap squires. I can’t find any information on the pro tone series not even on the fender homepage, so it would be great if someone could help me.

Pro tones were ‘high end’ squires made in 96/7 by Cort in Korea. I have one and have researched a bit, they were ash bodies with v good necks and reasonably high quality electronics and hardware. Very nice guitars at exceptional value at the time they sold.

It’s probably more than you’re willing to spend on a "first time" electric, but please check out my add for the Carvin DC-400. Quality is comparible to any PRS at half the price (new it was 200). At 00 it’s a bargain. Strat’ body with reverse headstock.

All I want on my guitar is a humbucker (Dimarzio-PAF), a volume knob, and a selector switch (no tone knobs). I want the selector switch to operate only in the bridge position. I want the sound to cut-off once I move the switch (ala EVH "You really Got Me"-solo). I know that he used a Les Paul, but I want to wire my Strat-style guitar as I described. Can anybody help?

Strat-type guitars are notoriously noisey and have low output(6K ohms)cause of their single coil pickups. If you like the feel of your squire, look into replacement pickups(Seymore SCREAMIN’ DEMON,LITTLE J.B,
HOT RAILS ect.,ect.)Kramer and Ibanez make good guitars
at reasonable prices. -

Strat-type guitars are notoriously noisey, and have low output(6k ohms)because of the single coil pick-ups.I would try some of the ibanez models,or humbucking guitar with split-coil ability. There are many to choose, but Ibanez makes good stuff at reasonable prices.Oh yeah,if you like the feel of the squire, you might look at replacment pick-ups(Seymore SCREAMIN’DEMON,LITTLE J.B. ect.,ect)

Hmm,your problem seems quite complexed.
By keeping your rigth hand close to the bridge, you’ll
restrict your motion and your cross-string accuracy will be hindered. This us because your arm is almost locked. However,if you like your sound, that’s cool too, but there will be a trade-off. Been playing 22 yrs.,2 yrs. Mannes , still take lessons. Trust me ,try
folding your arm inward (standard position). You’ll find
your cross-string picking easier, more accurate and more fluid. Give it a try dude.
Good Luck -
July 28, 2000 at 2:26 am #27282AnonymousGuest
Well, my advice to you is to go down to your local guitar center or whatever you have, and play all the 12 strings, regardless of price or name, and whichever one you think sounds the best or plays the best, buy it…That’s what I always do…I tested 12 strings and was tied between a martin and a guild…the martin was about 1200 bucks tagged, and the guild was tagged at like 800 if i remember right. but i just bought a 1600 6 string, so i won’t be getting that any time soon.

: In the spirit of international understanding and cooperation among guitarists I am seeking to compile a translation list for all languages for parts of the guitar. There is very little in the official translation books or anywhere else for these terms. It may not be important to the rest of the world, but it is to us guitar players. If it is successful, I will go on to acoustic guitars and beyond.: Music itself may know no international boundries, but its spoken and written language do. I will be happy to share my findings as it is for us all.
: You can look at my request at:
: Thank you
——————————————————-Hi there, I just read your mail requesting help for your translation effort. It’s a neat idea, so let me contribute with my modest input for your Spanish/English part. By the way, I live in Mexico, so mine could be viewed as a ‘mexican spanish version’ for guitar terminology.
As you don’t specify which words do you want to be translated, (it would be helpful if you could e-mail a proper list of terms and words, no matter how long) I think I’ll start with some common used terms.1)Guitarra-Guitar (I guess you already knew)
2)Pastilla-Pickup
3)Knobs, volume and tone-Controles de volumen y tono
9)Pickguard-Mica
10)Tuning pegs-Clavijas de afinacion
11)Nut-Hueso o guia de las cuerdas
12)String(s)-Cuerda(s)
13)Guitar jack-Conexion de entrada (‘entrada’ is often used)
14)Guitar bridge-Puente
15)Guitar saddles (where strings travel rest towards headstock)-asiento/reposo/silla de la cuerda
16)Nut string lock/clamp (on Floyd rose tremolo equipped guitars)-Candado
17)Bridge string lock-Candado (you specify which you are refferring to, the one at the nut(hueso) or the one at the bridge (puente)
18)Fretboard dot inlay-Puntos de guia del diapason, sometimes called ‘puntos de guia’ or just ‘marcas del diapason’
19)Higher/Lower guitar horn (on strat-style electric guitars)-Cuerno superior/inferior, they are also called ‘Cuerno alto/Cuerno bajo’
20)Guitar brand (Fender, Gibson, PRS, etc.)-Marca de la guitarra, e.g. ‘What’s your guitar’s brand?’-¿De que marca es tu guitarra? All right, there you have it. Hope it helps, good luck!
Renzo.

I SHOULD HAVE MENTIONED THAT THERES A GOOD SIGHT THAT GIVES ALOT OF INSIGHT TO ALL TYPES OF GUITAR FIXES. ITS LOCATED AT URL: http://WWW.FRETS.COM. GO TO THAT SIGHT AND SCROLL DOWN TO DEPARTMENTS AND THE SECTION"OF INTEREST TO MUSICIANS. SCROLL WAY DOWN TO THE SECTION THAT SAYS PICKGUARDS AND THEY EXPLAIN(PICTURES INCLUDED!) HOW TO INSTALL OR REMOVE A PICKGUARD. I LIKED THE TRICK ABOUT PUTTING WATER UNDER THE GUARD BEFORE YOU PUSH DOWN THE GUARD. THEY EXPLAIN THAT THE WATER DISPLACES ANY AIR BUBBLES THAT MAY GET TRAPPED UNDER THE SURFACE. MINE YOU CANT EVEN SEE FROM FIVE FEET AWAY !! GOOD LUCK !

Moving only your wrist seems best to me if you can but Im using the way I do it naturally now. I pick naturally with my wrist and forearm both together – I have to hear the strings muted more than I like if I move my arm at all to change strings. I dont like the tone with the palm far away from the bridge on the lowest strings but adding more distortion, mid, and high end helps a little.

I TOO BOUGHT A BEATIFUL LTD’99 MOUNTAIN TAKAMINE. I HAD THE SAME CONCERN AS YOU AS FAR AS SCRATCHING THE WOOD. I WENT TO MY LOCAL MUSIC SHOP AND THEY CARRIED CLEAR PICKGUARDS. I BELIEVE IT WAS LESS THAN TEN DOLLARS AND HAD A PEEL AND STICK TYPE BACKING. YOU JUST HAVE TO BE CAREFULL ABOUT AIR BUBBLES. I HAVEN’T NOTICED ANY AFFECT ON THE SOUND OF THE GUITAR, AND I IMAGINE IF YOU WANTED TO REMOVE IT LATER… YOU COULD HEAT IT UP WITH A HAIR DRYER AND TAKE IT OFF. MY WAY OF THINKING WAS IT BEATS SCRATCHING THE WOOD. BY THE WAY… THEY SOUND JUST AS BEAUTIFULL AS THEY LOOK!!!!

I bought a new ef508c takamine and have been getting scratches while playing. I am considering adding a pickguard. I need some advice on whether this will hurt the resale value or effect the sound of the guitar. Has anybody ever seen a clear pickguard? The wood is so beautiful on this guitar I almost hate to cover any of it up. Thanks!

The amp you are playing makes a major difference. I love Fender Amps for a clean sound. The tubes make a difference in the way it sounds. Tubes are warmer sounding an cut through a mix.
Your pickups also make a difference. The pickups you use will be something that you will need to experiment with to find out what you like best. The best way to experiment is just to go to your local music dealer and check out the new guitars. It’s a great way to spend some time as long as the salesmen don’t hassle you.

July 27, 2000 at 6:29 pm #27270AnonymousGuest
Now as far as pickups you could probably get some dimarizio pickups for under 00. As far as which guitar I’d go with the custom, but your best bet is just go and plug-em-in at your store and play. Again though, I’d get the gibson. I think the Epi-custom-les is still 00, an extra 200 and you can get a good Gibson Les Paul. Like I said, its tough trust me I know, but I’m saving EVERYPENNY to get a Gibson.

I just got my first electric guitar a few months ago, and I had enough of it already, it’s a Squier Strat and it’s only good at low volumes because the buzzing gets so bad. I’m looking for a guitar that can handle distortion and give off a early 70’s and later 80’s punk sound. But I’m not really looking for a metal looking guitar just a regular shape like the strat. Can anybody help?
thx,

I would recommend that all you guys be careful dealing with Ed Roman. I recently spoke to him about a used Hamer Phantom he had for sal on his site. It had been totally done over by him and he charged 499 for what should have been a 50 guitar. Worse yet, someone bought it at that price! Roman is well known for doctoring instruments-taking perfectly good stock guitars and changing them, removing flame tops, substituting hardware and pickups, etc. Yeah, his website is great; you can spend hours looking it over, just be careful dealing with him. By the way, all you vintage fans, stay away from Chicago Music Exchange from Chicago! I had a very bad experience over an old Gibson SG I bought there. These guys are not worth dealing with.

The fastest guitar players combine the forearm stroke(mainly) with wrist action (not so much). As you practice your speed ,you right thumb and fore-finger will start to gyrate naturally (don’t think about it or
fight it).Try not to change strings with your wrist. With healthly, daily practice your body will automatically know what to do.
Etude in Cminor(?)good for improving your up-stroke, key to playing fast and precise. This helped me become a speed demon when I was younger,I was quite deadly.
A good teacher can also give you cross-srtring picking excersises to help you.Get down with the up-stroke!!

I probably would’nt buy something too expensive for this young trooper.Later he might decide he’d rather play the tuba(joke),you’ll be stuck with an 00 peice of furniature, gathering dust.Also.you’ll lose 50% of the guitar’s original value if you sell it.I would, instead, get him something good,at a low price and let him earn (pratice) his way towards a Les Paul or Jackson(me…Stratocastor). Effects?? Boss overdrive or distortion ,Cry-baby wah-wah.These are standard boxes.Amp??Peavey 15-20 watts, reverb…he’ll really like that!!
Please leave comment.
Good luck to you & son -

Hmm,let me think.Could be a couple of things.
1.Some distortion boxes are too raspy, harmonics can ring all over the place.Might try an overdrive box when playing big chords.
2.CHECK GUITAR INTONATION.Bad intonation can slop-up your sound.Use electronic tuner(I like Korgs).Open A should sound like 12th fret A.If not,adjust length of bridge saddle peices(phillips screw-driver).
3. When moving chord to chord, dampen strings slightly.
Lots of harmonics between 1st & 5th frets.

The only Dimarzio pik-ups I vouch for are the PAF pros and the standard PAF(rythym position). If you can get Bill Lawrence pickups, they’ll shred your dog!The Carvin M22 pick-ups are MONSTEROUS,I love them. However,
my all around favorite is the Seymore Duncan SH-5.It has a ceramic magnet(not alico,i.e. Bill Lawrence)so the tone is warm, big, and clear. Not as powerful as some
others(14.7k ohms)but when you crank’em it’s a real mutha(shut my mouth).Save your old pickups.Stay away from anything that says"DISTORTION",might have to much
output and not enough clarity.Tone beats output anyday!
Good Luck -

It’s good that you are confident in your ability and your creativity.Much props to you. However,as artists we must practice HUMILITY.Remember, there is always someone out there better than the next guy and flaunting it too much can create enemies inside the industry and out.The learnig process ends only when Gabriel’s horn blows (death).

Hmm,it’s really a matter of personal choice. Some guys feel they’re kinda dry sounding, not rich enough. I use an old Fender Twin with various overdrive/distortion boxes.Gigging I use the Tech 21.Both have warm, big sounds, also great reverb. Most Peavey Stuff is also good
affordable, and durable. The word is:tech guys love’m cause they are easy to fix.If you’re happy with this amp,get another one before they discontinue them.

I have and Ovations 6 and I love their 12s too. Yamaha has a pretty good 12 for like 450 and even their 00 one isn’t bad! I’d say go to a store spend about 30 40 mins playing and just pick it. I know I’m gonna save my stones off to get a taylor for 1200. It’ll take about 5 years but what the hell! Oh you can get an ovations 12 from 500 and up!

STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Here is some info you need!!! If you want to buy an Epi…remember this you will still need to replace the junk pickups to get a good sound!!! Also if you want to save a few duckets get a Carlo Robelli, they are assemled with the Epi’s at the same place. ADVICE!: If you are to get a Les Paul get the Gibson. This is what I have learned from good guitar guru budz. After you get the Epi rplace the pickups and electronics you’re 100-200 duckets away from a Gibson. So what I’m gonna do, cause I want a les paula also, is get a used studio or just save the extra and get the new one! Epi’s are ok, but! don’t confuse them with the Gibsons.

I want to buy an epiphone les paul standard but some people have told me that they’re not really made out of maple and mahogany, instead they are made out of poplar or some other wood.Is this true. I’d also like to know the quality of their construction.

so you don’t like neil. i would guess that your about 18-21 years old. as you get older i think you will appreciate the stunning songs that neil has written. he may be a turnoff to the new kids thrasing and rapping, but he deserves respect.

"This is an example of the kind of insights to be found at
guitarprinciples.com. This one seems to be simple, but in fact, many
players
are stuck at a certain level of playing because of right hand tension
(even a
little will affect you)……..The Right Hand: Get a Grip, but not too tight….by Jamey Andreas
I am going to be real basic here, and talk about a problem that often
begins
right at the beginning for players, is often overlooked, and takes root
as a
major handicap for future playing. I am talking about the right hand of
the
pick style player. Here’s the point. Most people tend to grip the pick too tight! They have
A LOT
of extra tension in their hand that they don’t recognize as tension. It
feels
normal to them. Then, to make matters worse, when they contact the
strings
with the pick, for a note or a strum, they tighten their hand even
more,
without knowing it.
Don’t do this! Look at your right hand as you play. Here are two
tip-offs
that you have extra tension: the fingers not holding the pick curl in
to the
hand, as if to make a fist, or the wrist presses itself on to the face
of the
guitar, while the unfortunate guitarist continues to play as well as
they can
under the circumstances. (Another sign will be pressing on the guitar
with
the pinky). The fingers holding the pick, and indeed the whole right hand, must be
trained to be a sensitive instrument that is always responding to the
needs
of each playing situation. If a harder attack is desired, the hold on
the
pick will increase slightly, but never more than necessary. And you
will
never maintain that extra tension after it is not needed anymore. For more insight into technical, practice, and development issues,

You might be referring to the Gretsch "Country Gentleman" model. It’s a hollow body guitar made famous by the master, Chet Atkins himself. George Harrison, of the Beatles, was also a user of this guitar. I was just looking through the "Ebay" site yesterday and noticed a "gent" or two for sale. Can’t recall exactly what they were asking, maybe in the 00 range. Check it out yourself and see if that’s what you’re after.

A little full of ourselves, aren’t we, A. Thrashy. If you’re so much damn better than Metallica, why aren’t you out on the road making millions and getting shit loads of fans? HMMM??? I can’t hear you??? This is logic we’re talking about here. And, oh, by the way, there’s a very good chance that you’r full of shit and that you are actually a big pile of stickin’ shit when compared to Metallica. As a drummer and bass player, I don’t go around flaunting my playing, because I’m not an ASSHOLE. . .

I like Taylor’s, but for my money Martin makes the best 12-string. But it all depends on the sound you want. Martin is by far the better blues 12-string.

I know there things to to to protect the guitar from deprssurisation (due to the tension of the strings).
Could someone explain what I have to do ? (for example remove the strings or things like that, I don’t know at all).
Thanks in advance. -

Hi – I’m trying to arrange an a capella version of Ben Harper’s "Steal My Kisses". I know the chords already, and the bass tab, etc. Does anyone have the guitar tab that SHOWS where he plays the 2nds and the 6ths (for example) in the chords? I’m not looking for the simple chord progressions, but TABLATURE or sheet music, or anyone’s musical expertise on this song… Thanks a lot. Aimee

Hedges was one of the greatest acoustic guitars in history. He died in a car accident in the mid 90’s treagically. He was know for his work, with the Harp/guitar, which he used to the fullest extent. Playing guitar with his left hand alone, and playing the harp with his right hand. He was able to hamer on those guitar notes very well, while he was playing a totally different instrument -

I have used PV Bandit amps for 15 years and still rarely hear a sound I like better. I can get a good distortion sound at low volumes, which I can’t with tube amps. I don’t see or hear of many guitar players using them. I am curious about other players likes and dislikes about them.

: Easy Money Not A Scam!!: Job Description:
: I saw this article in a newsgroup saying to send to each of the 6 names and
: addresses stated in the article. You then place your own name and address in the
: bottom of the list at #6, and post the article in at least 200 newsgroups. I figured,
: "What have I got to lose" I invested the . Within 7 days, I started getting money in the mail! In my first week, I made about 5. By the end of the second week I had
: made a total of over ,000! This is now my fourth week and I have made over
: 2,000 and it’s still coming in. It’s certainly worth . Let me tell you how this works
: and WHY it works, make sure you print a copy of this article NOW, so you can get the information off of it as you need it. I promise that if you follow the directions exactly, you will start making more money than you thought possible by doing something so easy! It’s legal. And your investment is only (plus postage) This is not a rip-off; it is not indecent, and it is 99% no risk, it works! If all of the instructions are adhered to, you will receive huge dividends. Follow these directions EXACTLY, and 0,000 or more can be yours in 20 to 60 days. This program remains successful because of the honesty and integrity of the participants. In this business your product is not solid and tangible, it’s a service. You are in the business of developing Mailing Lists. Here are the 4 easy steps to success. STEP1: Get 6 pieces of paper and write the following on each piece of paper "PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR MAILING LIST." Now get 6 US bills and place ONE inside EACH piece of paper so the bill will not be seen through the envelope. Next, place one paper in each of the 6 envelopes and seal them. What you are doing requesting a legitimate service and you are paying for it! Mail the 6 envelopes to the following addresses: #1) Joe O’Gorman 432 Farm Rd. Arlington, VT 05250 #2) Floyd Scott 145 E. David Dr. 62263#3 S. Asfaha 1700 Four Oaks Rd. #217 Eagan, MN 55121 #4) Ian Robertson P.O. Box 163, Monterey, VA 24465 #5) Ashley Blankenship P.O. Box 153 Monterey, VA 24465#6)Marianne Hoyt; P.O. Box 2352; Holland, MI 49422-2352 STEP2: Now take the #1 name of the list that you see above, move the other names up (6 becomes 5, etc.) and add YOUR Name as #6 on the list. STEP3: Now, post your amended article to at least
: 200 newsgroups. (there are at least 24,000 groups) All you need is 200, but remember, the more you post, the more money you make! This is perfectly legal!
: Keep a copy of these steps for yourself and, whenever you need money, you can use
: it again and again. PLEASE REMEMBER that this program remains successful
: because of the honesty and integrity of the participants and by their carefully
: adhering to the directions. If you are of integrity, the program will continue and the
: money that so many others have received will come your way. You may want to
: retain every name and address sent to you and keep the notes people send you. This
: VERIFIES that you are truly providing a service. So, as each post is downloaded and the directions carefully followed, six members will be reimbursed for their
: participation as a List Developer with each. Your name will move up the list so that when your name reaches the #1 position you will be receiving thousands of dollars in CASH! Send it now, add your own name to the list and you’re in business!
: All you have to do is jump to different newsgroups and post away. YOU HAVE TO
: POST A MINIMUM OF 200** That’s it! When your name is no longer on the list, you just take the latest posting in the newsgroups, and send out another to names on the list, putting your name at #6 again. And start posting again. Thousands of people
: all over the world are joining the Internet and reading these articles everyday so can you afford and see if it works? This plan works because there are tons of new honest users who are joining the newsgroups everyday and are willing to give it a try?

: I am sure I know what an amp is….but what is a pre-amp? I am not sure what they are.. I think I have seen them. Oh and does anyone know what rack mountable amps are?
:
: Also what are heads??: I know cabs mean cabinets and I think cabinets are the speakers.
:
:Right-o on the cabinet idea. In a combo amp, the amplifier and the speakers are housed in the same enclosure. In a 1/2 stack or stack, the speakers are seperate (that’s the cabinet) from the amplifier (there’s the head.) (Head is also something my girlfriend doesn’t know anything about, but thats another topic…)
A rack mountable amplifier is simply an amp that is without its own enclosure. It fits into a rack space. (A rack is an empty box with mounting holes to put your shit in.)
A pre-amp is something that beefs up your signal before it gets to the actual amplifier. For instance, on my rig (SG w/Fender Deville), I use a pedal with a bit o’ gain going into the amp. This heats up the signal and effectively becomes a pre-amp, although they do make real pre-amps for that application. Another time you’d see a pre-amp is in using a pickup on an acoustic guitar…
I think that’s pretty accurate. Somebody correct me if I’m wrong…

Or, just play your strings until one breaks, then change ’em all. that’s what I do, and they last anywhere from 20 min (my bad luck) to a month or so…the only bad part is when that happens at a gig. That’s when a backup axe comes in handy.

I like the tone of the Jackson humbuckers enough but they feed back alot when you play loud with distortion – I like the Seymour Duncan "Duncan Distortion". It has has alot of output ( distortion ) and a hard tone that sounds better to me with palm muting than most pickups.

: For my first real amp I bought a Line6 FlextoneII.
: I was reading about downloading tone settings into
: the amp via my pc. My amp has input output Midi
: plugs and my sound card has input output "haedphone jacks".
: Would that work, if I find an adapter? Would it
: be possible to play on my pc?NO, RUNNING IT THROUGH THE HEDHONE JACK WON’T WORK YOU’LL HAVE TO INSTALL A MIDI JACK INTO YOUR PC CONSOLE AND BUY A MIDI PROGRAM TO RUN IT CORRECTLY

: whenever I play chords with distortion everything kind of runs together. Like if I play a "C" and then a "G" the sound from the "C" still lingers and it all sound like a bunch of noise. Is there something that is made to help seperate the sound or is there something I can adjust on my amp to make it sound better. I have Strat, a Les Paul, and a Peavey 300 along with an Ibanez distortion box. I also have a couple of practice amp with distortion built in and it all sound the same way (runs together)I’m sorry if this is a stupid question, I’m kind of a newbie. ANY help is appreciated. Thanks.
WELL, IF YOUR PLAYING STANDARD CORDS LIKE FOR INSTANCE IN TAB FIGURE "C"
"C"

: I saw most favorable comments about Heritage archtops than Gibson. The first one are really cheaper, solyd wood than Gibsons laminated and expensive.
: What do you think about this? No Heritage retailer here in Barcelona, Spain but next summer i try to buy an archtop in New Orleans. ThanksHeritage is actually a company owned by former Gibson workers. When Gibson closed their Michigan plant in the 80’s, they gave the workers the option of becoming senior employees in Nashville, or becoming owners of the Michigan plant, and owners of woods left behind. Anyway they all bought out the plant, and formed the company we call Heritage. So what you are buying are Gibsons, with better quality, and lower price. So go for it. You maybe able to arrange some kind of deal with a retailer that would ship you the guitar. Check out some european shops, mainly the bigger ones, because they maybe able to help you out

Easy Money Not A Scam!!
New York-New York City
Job Title:
Easy Money Not A Scam!!Job Description:
I saw this article in a newsgroup saying to send to each of the 6 names and
addresses stated in the article. You then place your own name and address in the
bottom of the list at #6, and post the article in at least 200 newsgroups. I figured,
"What have I got to lose" I invested the . Within 7 days, I started getting money in the mail! In my first week, I made about 5. By the end of the second week I had
made a total of over ,000! This is now my fourth week and I have made over
2,000 and it’s still coming in. It’s certainly worth . Let me tell you how this works
and WHY it works, make sure you print a copy of this article NOW, so you can get the information off of it as you need it.
200 newsgroups. (there are at least 24,000 groups) All you need is 200, but remember, the more you post, the more money you make! This is perfectly legal!
Keep a copy of these steps for yourself and, whenever you need money, you can use
it again and again. PLEASE REMEMBER that this program remains successful
because of the honesty and integrity of the participants and by their carefully
adhering to the directions. If you are of integrity, the program will continue and the
money that so many others have received will come your way. You may want to
retain every name and address sent to you and keep the notes people send you. This
VERIFIES that you are truly providing a service. So, as each post is downloaded and the directions carefully followed, six members will be reimbursed for their
participation as a List Developer with each. Your name will move up the list so that when your name reaches the #1 position you will be receiving thousands of dollars in CASH! Send it now, add your own name to the list and you’re in business!
All you have to do is jump to different newsgroups and post away. YOU HAVE TO
POST A MINIMUM OF 200** That’s it! When your name is no longer on the list, you just take the latest posting in the newsgroups, and send out another to names on the list, putting your name at #6 again. And start posting again. Thousands of people
all over the world are joining the Internet and reading these articles everyday so can you afford and see if it works? This plan works because there are tons of new honest users who are joining the newsgroups everyday and are willing to give it a try?
There are 20,000 to 50,000 new users every day.Contact:

Well, Fender is actually making some decent guitars…i bought one for around 300 bucks like 6 months ago and have had people come up to me and ask me how i got so much tone out of it…I think fender makes several affordable models…What i would recomend you do is find someone who can play…and have them play maybe 15 different guitars in your pricerange for you. Use their input and see how they sound to make your decision…it’s not worth buying a cheap guitar if it’s a pain to play it and it sounds bad.

: How do I clean the pickups on my guitar?…they are very dusty. And how often should I clean the pickups? Also, how often should I change strings on a guitar???
THE BEST WAY TO CLEAN YOUR PICKUPS IS WITH ELECTRONIC ENDUST, OR AN AIR DUSTER AND TO GET THEN REALLY CLEAN PUT SOME GUITAR POLISH ON A Q-TIP AND GET IT REALLY GOOD, THE BEST TIME TO CLEAN YOUR PICKUPS IS WHEN YOU CHANGE YOUR STRINGS ITS MUCH EASYER TO DO IT THEN, CHANGE YOUR STRINGS WHEN THEY GET A VERY DRY FLAT SOUND OR WHEN THERE SO CORRODED THAT YOU CANT EVEN GET THEM CLEAN WITH A STRING CLEANER, TAKE GOOD CARE OF YOUR STRINGS BECAUSE GOOD BIRGHT SOUNDING STRINGS IS A KEY FACTOR IN YOUR SOUND, WIPE OFF YOUR STINGS EACH TIME AFTER YOUR DONE PLAYING BECAUSE THE CHEMICALS IN YOUR FINGERS AND SWEAT CORRODE THE STING AND TRY TO POLISH YOUR STIRNG EVERY WEEK, DO NOT KEEP YOUR GUITAR IN A DAMP AREA LIKE A BASEMENT, THAT IS JUST PLAIN GUITAR STRING DOOM!!! IF YOU TAKE REAL GOOD CARE OF YOUR STRINGS YOU MIGHT NOT EVEN HALF TO CHANGE THEM FOR UP TO FIVE MONTHS!! GOODLUCK!!

When playing with distortion you must use power chords because of all harmonic noise produced by the effect. That is: mark only Root ant Fifth notes, mute the other strings. That should give you your stylish chords you want. Good trippin!

: My son’s guitar teacher has said that my son is now "ready" to "move onto" an electric. This is after two years of learning the basics on a cheapo acoustic. My son wants a new guitar, though I favor a used model simply because you can get great deals on some dream models. Anyway, so we’re going to buy a new guitar. I know nothing about the market today. I play a hollow-body electric Guild which I bought used in New York back in ’85. I learned to play on a friend’s Strat. That’s my particular experience: quite the amateur, frankly unfamiliar with the important criteria regarding this decision. I’m willing to pay around 00-00 but might splurge for something really godlike. What do you think? Suggestions deeply appreciated.
: And what effects boxes should I buy him?
It’s really cool of you to help your son get into the world of guitar! My Mom actually showed me the way but I had to buy all of my own gear.
In my opinion, the Fender Strat and the Gibson Les Paul are the esstential guitars, but can be rather expensive (especially the Gibson). Fortunately both are available in cheaper type of models – the mexican Fender Strat and the Epiphone Les Paul. Either one should last him until he’s ready to move on too the real thing.
I’d also recommend one of the Fender Champion 30 amp. You could get into the Epiphone guitar and Fender amp for around 00 or you could get into the mexican Fender Strat and Fender amp for around 00.

: one day it just snapped and i had to have a guitar, so i want to learn as much as i can before i buy one. i’m 14 so i have a rather limited price range.
: should i buy one of those guitar packs that come with everything a beginner needs? i found a fender pack that comes with a squire strat, an amp (it didn’t say how many watts), a tuner, strap, picks, extra strings, etc. for about 80. i know that the squires suck to high heaven or whatever, but i’m a beginner and it doesn’t really matter to me. does this sound like a good idea? if not, please tell me what does..Spend the money on a guitar and an amp – individually. You’ll get better qaulity. You can get the tuner and stuff later. I’d recommend the Epiphone LP. Sound and looks like the original, but at a fraction of the cost. I’d recommend one of the Fender amps. Go to:
http://www.gusbootmusic.50megs.com
Don’t cut corners on your gear – you’ll wish you had gotten better gear when your skills develop, which shouldn’t take too long. Good luck. -

No, it won’t work. You will get one delay working on the other. What you are describing is a stereo effect, recorded separately. You might want to run two amps, and run one signal into each one. You could also use a stereo amp, with each channel using a different delay.

Your Hand is Your Band: The Importance of Fingering
Could you imagine how good a band would be if the players weren’t sure
of who
was supposed to play which notes? How good would their performance be
if at
rehearsals different members played different notes at different times?
And
yet, when guitarists practice, this is actually what happens for many
of us.
Very often, we are not really sure of which fingers we are using for
each
note we must play, and we do different things at different times. Or,
we may
be using awkward fingering for something, because we never stopped to
think,
examine and analyze what we are doing. As I have gone through many years of teaching the guitar, I have formed
a
list which now contains many items. The list is called "really basic
things
that every guitarist should fully understand and put into practice, but
apparently, nobody is telling them, or they are just not listening."I hope eventually to get to every one of the items on this list, but
the
subject of fingering is one I would like to talk about now. It often
happens
that I will get a new student, who has played for a while, and had
lessons
with another teacher. Many times I have been surprised, in fact,
shocked, to
find them practicing things, especially rather complex things like
classical
pieces or fast rock licks on electric guitar, and they DO NOT HAVE ANY
FINGERING OR PICKING WRITTEN ON THE MUSIC. In other words, the notes or
tab
are there, but the fingers to use for each hand are not.Why is this important? Because the fingering is the set of instructions
that
your brain is supposed to be processing and following when you play in
order
to bring about the results you want: namely, the right notes at the
right
time. If you have not figured out the fingering you are going to use,
(or
experiment with) than you are, in effect, making your practicing weak
and
ineffective because you are not fulfilling the two conditions of
practice:
1)Know the right thing to do to achieve what you want, and 2) MAKE SURE
YOU
DO IT!Here is the fundamental understanding you must have. When you are
training
your fingers (and realize you are really training your WHOLE body WITH
your
mind) to perform the actions necessary to get the result you want (the
exact
right movements at the exact right time) you must be entirely and
consciously
clear as to what those movements need to be, AND you must know, really
know,
whether or not you are doing those movements with each repetition
during the
practice process. If you have not even bothered to figure out and write
down
the picking to a complex lick, or complex passage in say, a Bach fugue,
then
you are undoubtedly doing something different with each repetition, and
doing
something even slightly different just won’t cut it when it comes to
nailing
things securely. The only time you can get away without being consciously aware of the
fingering you are using is when the notes you are playing are parts of
patterns that are already well learned, and able to be done
automatically. Of
course, the more we develop as players, the more patterns we
accumulate. But
if you want to continue to develop your abilities as a player, you must
know
how to deal with new and challenging material, and to CONQUER IT! And
believe
me, there are ways that work, and ways that don’t!Don’t be lazy. I used to want to just jump in and start playing the
music,
and not have to figure out the best right hand fingering for the Bach
fugue
that I couldn’t wait to play. But as I developed, and saw how
unreliable and
awkward the results of such practicing were, I started to take the time
to
write in the fingers when I needed to. My practicing became more
consistent,
and the results more powerful. It is very important to realize that the fingering you use for a
passage can
make the difference between being able to play something, and not being
able
to. There are a few reasons for this:1) Some fingering is just BAD. Some fingering is just awkward or
inefficient
by nature for human hands.2) Some fingering may be bad for YOU. It may be used, and work for
someone
else, because of individual anatomic differences, or different levels
of
development. Fingering that wasn’t good for me at one point, became
usable
years later, and vice versa.Learning the ins and outs of fingering and picking takes experience,
and
analytical thinking. If you take lessons, ask your teacher about the
subject,
and always think in this way when you practice.Whenever you are having trouble with something, a lick or scale run or
intricate fingerstyle passage, ask yourself this question: do I know
EVERY
finger, on both hands, responsible for playing EVERY note (for
pickstyle,
substitute pick stroke, up or down, for the right hand). Providing an
answer
to that question (the right answer, YES, of course) may very well solve
that
problem for you.copyright 2000 by Jamey Andreas, guitarprinciples.com

Well for 00 or so, you could get a used Gibson Les Paul Studio easy. I don’t know what would be good for a 10 year old though. I started at that age myself, and my hands were tiny at the time. You should get something with a thin neck, maybe an Ibanez, or maybe a Mexican Strat. Two websites you should check out: Route101 guitars, customized strat copies, with seymour duncan pickups, very nice alternative, to a Mexican Strat. Also Musicyo.com, they sell Kramers, which I heard are good quality. My personal reccomendation is that you get him a Danelectro, rather simple, easy to play, cheap, nothing for him to damage beyond reapair, and they sound great. If you get him a cheaper guitar, you could get him a real good amp, which is importent. Like you could get him a Dano Double Cutaway, and a Fender Blues Jr. Tube amp, altogether for 80, not bad for a tube amp, and a decent guitar. In about a year and half, if he wants to go on with guitar, you could get him a better guitar, but he still could use the amp. I’d say for a begginer, the best pedal to get is a distortion. The best for rock, blues, and anything else he would want to play. Maybe a Electro Harmonix Big Muff for 0, and your set. Hope it all helps

: Hi,
: Instead of spending a fortune on each pedal, I was looking at those multi effects pedals you can get, with like 33 or more effects.
: Anyone tried them or know of someone who has? Let me know your opinion
The thing is, you get what you pay for. If you spend somewhere like 50, or so on a Boss Gt3 you will get about that much quality. If you want the best quality, you get a bunch of stomp-boxes. I used own a Digitech Rp-6 effects processor, and it was horrible, bad pedals, weak preamp, bad effects, horrible distortions, everything just bad. I am shifting towards stomp-boxes again. I have a sansamp, a Mr. Crybaby, and a boss Flanger right now, and I plan on getting a Voodoo Lab chorus, a Boss Graphic Eq, and Reverb/delay. Anyway, some people deal with them, but I just can’t stand them. You have to ask yourself a question, will you use 40 lack luster effects, or will you use a few good stomp-boxes? .

Hi,
Instead of spending a fortune on each pedal, I was looking at those multi effects pedals you can get, with like 33 or more effects.
Anyone tried them or know of someone who has? Let me know your opinion.

I’m really keen on some introductions by Stevie Ray, Eric Clapton and music from The Last Waltz (The Band). I have the CDs but and can copy the music onto the hard drive as .wav files. The software for converting the music into tablature requires midi files. Can anyone throw some light on the subject for me please.

I wish I had a dad like you when I was learning to play! Anyway, for that sum you can do really well. The way I buy all my guitars really cheap is to go to guitar expos and buy them from guys who carry them in. The dealers at those shows will be offering them wholesale money for them. I’ve been able to buy used Telecasters, Strats and Les Paul’s for 00 at these things. Apart from getting the best deal you can on an American-manufactured guitar, it’s just a matter of what sounds your son will want to hear come out of the thing. That would influence the model choice and in particular the effects. You’re obviously aware that the main difference will be between single and dual coil pickups and darker wood like Mahogony and lighter, brighter sounding wood like alder or maple. If your son has a musical genre and favorite artists, you should be in good shape to find him an axe he will swing with gusto.
Sincerely,
Charles Rathmann

whenever I play chords with distortion everything kind of runs together. Thanks.

Real studios have a variety of amps, effects, noise gates, etc. on site. Also, if there is an engineer booked with your session,(hope so) it will be his job to make sure there isn’t noise bleeding through. Most studios are well equipped to handle anything that comes up. By all means bring your own amp if you really like the sound. But also listen to their advice, they are the pros !
-
November 19, 2003 at 4:29 pm #99972AnonymousGuest
The main thing is to be sure your guitar is in good shape – the intonation is good, etc. As posted before, the studio should have good pre-amps (very important!), and many pro studios have amps, etc. In addition, they may have amp modelers like a POD for recording. These are used extensively by the pros. If the studio is DAW based, you may just record a clean sound (the engineer should be able to give you distortion in your headphones while you play…), and add the amp later. Amp Farm makes a great sounding software modeler that mimics classic amps. An advantage is that you could record the part with, say a Fender tweed sound, then change your mind and dial in a Marshall stack instead. Of course this only works if you like the sound of that modeler! It just depends on what your studio has – I would check with them.

Would that work, if I find an adapter? Would it

Yeah, Guitar packages are a good idea, and you’ll be able to get a good deal.
One thing I suggest is to pick out a decient guitar and amp, and go to the retailer and ask them what they can give you this for, tell them that you’ve got prices from other music stores and you’re just compairing them… I bet that you’ll come out with a great package and a good price. Better then buying it all seperatly… Have fun-

My co-worker just purchased a dragonfly X. He is really happy with how it plays and sounds. He says the finish is quite nice for the price. As for purchasing through musiciansfriend is a nother matter. He tried to buy through them and ended up having a major headache. He was buying a closeout. The sent the wrong guitar, sold the guitar he bought, and then it got muddle up in shipping. He ended up finding a local dealer (Seattle area) and had them order one. My suggestion is to search the web for a good buy. There seems to be a number of online sellers. I believe http://www.gear1music.com is having an extra %10 sale right now. $249.99 w/ %10 off that is a better deal if you ask me…….

The Secret of Speed:
Finding the Incredible Lightnessby Jamey Andreas
In my essay "Discover Your Discomfort", I urged you to become aware of
the
sensations of discomfort you experience while practicing and playing.
The
reason is very simple. Until you do, you will not be able to be aware
of the
sensations (that is, your mental awareness of the physical feelings in
your
body) a good player has, the sensations that you must have to play
well. I
call this sensation, or feeling in the body, "The Incredible
Lightness". I
call it this, because once you experience it, and allow it to grow by
Correct
Practicing, well, it’s Incredible. This feeling of lightness is what
makes
fast, accurate playing possible. Unfortunately, because of ignorance of
how
to practice correctly, far too many players create for themselves "The
Incredible Tightness".I will quote myself to bring this point home:
"The relative state of tension or relaxation in the muscles is one of
the
hardest things to be aware of. I once saw a person play with so much
tension
in her right shoulder that it was up to her earlobe! Always trying to
be
helpful, I pointed this out to her when she finished. As she let her
shoulder
down a few inches to it’s normal position, she told me I was wrong,
she
wasn’t tense, but very relaxed! The reason she felt this way is because we very quickly become used
to
whatever we experience, and consider it normal. We never question
whatever
tensions we experience in learning new skills on the guitar, and in
fact
consider it part of the doing of it. And it often is, but it doesn’t
have to
continue to be that strenuous. We can learn to do the movements with
less
effort. However, when we first try something, it is often not possible to do it
without a lot of excess tension. The mistake is, we assume that the
tension
is inevitable, and never realize we can get to a point where we can get
the
result we want without all the huffing, puffing and straining. Often,
more
stretch or muscle development is required, which will come with a
correct
approach.Of course, as we continue to try the new skill, and assume the effort
we feel
must be that way, it becomes ingrained into our approach, and gets
worse. So
we have a vicious circle, that leads to frustration and bad playing. So extra tension in the muscles, which every advanced player knows is
the
number one cause of playing difficulty, becomes a blind spot for us.
Usually
we are only aware of the result of the tension, which is that mistake
we just
made. Often it happens we are not even aware of that, because we start
to
filter out those unpleasant reminders of our troubles.
As you will see shortly, the correct approach to dealing with
"mistakes"
caused by tension, is to repeat the movement extremely slowly, with a
great
focus on keeping all muscles relaxed. With each repetition, the muscles
learn
the relaxed way of moving to produce the result you want. "So you see, it is lack of understanding of how the body/mind functions,
and
lack of honest attention while practicing, that gets us in to trouble. You must start to observe your own "Tightness", and replace it with
"Lightness", then you will see your level as a player change upward,
what I
call Vertical Growth. Since many players have no idea what this
lightness
feels like, here is a very simple way to connect with it. You must then
begin
to cultivate this feeling in actual playing. Believe me, it feels good!
In
fact, when you see a good player "making it look easy", it’s because
it is
easy, when you have the "Incredible Lightness".Let’s discover "The Light Finger"
The first step in finding "The Incredible Lightness" is to discover The
Light
Finger. The Light Finger is the completely relaxed finger, brought to
the
string, and touching the string, with only the weight of the finger. It
does
not press the string down until told to do so. To discover the
sensation of
the Light Finger, do this:Raise your arms in front of you, without the guitar, and take hold of
the
index finger of your left hand with the thumb and index finger of your
right
hand. Completely relax the left index, and wiggle it around with your
right
hand. This is the Light Finger.Touch the palm of your right hand with your left index. Raise the left
index
two inches from the palm. Now let it drop by it’s own weight back to
your
palm, touching it very lightly, with no pressure. This is how the
finger
feels when it first touches the string. Now hold the guitar, paying attention to the being comfortable and
relaxed
throughout the body, and slowly raise your relaxed left arm up to the
neck,
bringing the hand up so that the index finger is lined up with the
ninth
fret. Have your fingers in a relaxed curl over the 6th string. Allow
your
Light, relaxed middle finger to fall to the 6th string, behind the 10th
fret,
so that it touches the string, but applies no pressure. Look at the
string
under your finger, and see the distance between the string and the
fingerboard. Make sure the string does not get move at all down toward
the
fret.Raise your finger an inch, and then bring it back to touch the string
again
in the same way. Do this over and over, touching the string with the
Light
Finger, bringing it away, and touching it again. This is called Finger
Flapping. Do this a few times with each finger every day. Make sure you
keep
the inactive fingers as relaxed as possible while touching the string
with
the active finger. This will get you used to the feeling, and over
time, very
sensitive to the feeling of complete relaxation. This light feeling is how your fingers will be when they first touch
the
string to play a note, and it is the feeling they will return to when
they
release from a note. It enables them to be prepared for their next job.
Many
people never have this light feeling, and play with tense fingers all
the
time, and their playing suffers greatly because of it.
This exercise is what I call a Foundation Exercise, one that should be
done
regularly, no matter how long you have been playing. It will
continually act
to increase your awareness of the correct and necessary sensations you
must
have in order to play well. Learning how to bring this feeling in to
all
playing situations is often a tricky matter, and there is much else to
know,
but we have to start somewhere!here is why. Speed, or the ability to execute movements rapidly and
accurately, is simply the result of continuous correct practice that
promotes
"The Incredible Lightness". If you are creating "The Incredible
Tightness"
when you practice, you will suffer because of it. Think of walking and
running. Does a little kid have to practice running? No, it just
happens
after balance is mastered, and the ability to place one foot in front
of the
other, and have all the body parts work together to keep the movement
going.
After the two year old gets that down, don’t worry, he’ll be
running! In closing, let me say that all the preceding is founded upon the first
two
Principles of Correct Practice. I will state them pretty formally, and
they
apply to all instruments.Principle of Correct Practice #1: Your aware, thinking mind is your
primary
practice tool.Principle of Correct Practice #2: Control of the fingers is developed
by
infusing conscious awareness into the muscles through the mechanism of
attention while practicing.Remember, as in all things in life, you get out of it what you put in
to it
(and believe me, it makes me feel pretty old to hear myself saying
that, but
it’s the truth.) So read this over and over, and do the exercise, and
apply
these understandings to your practice. Good Luck!for more insight visit http://www.guitarprinciples.com

My son’s guitar teacher has said that my son is now "ready" to "move onto" an electric.
And what effects boxes should I buy him?

In the spirit of international understanding and cooperation among guitarists I am seeking to compile a translation list for all languages for parts of the guitar. There is very little in the official translation books or anywhere else for these terms. It may not be important to the rest of the world, but it is to us guitar players. If it is successful, I will go on to acoustic guitars and beyond.
Music itself may know no international boundries, but its spoken and written language do. I will be happy to share my findings as it is for us all.
You can look at my request at:

: one day it just snapped and i had to have a guitar, so i want to learn as much as i can before i buy one. i’m 14 so i have a rather limited price range.
: should i buy one of those guitar packs that come with everything a beginner needs? i found a fender pack that comes with a squire strat, an amp (it didn’t say how many watts), a tuner, strap, picks, extra strings, etc. for about 80. i know that the squires suck to high heaven or whatever, but i’m a beginner and it doesn’t really matter to me. does this sound like a good idea? if not, please tell me what does..DON’T DO IT. You will be sorry man, just don’t do. For 80 or so, you could get so much better. You should get something a little bit better. Get a Dearmond, or a Danelectro, they both make great economy guitars, that don’t sound like junk. Get a decent amp, like a Fender Champion 30. Also, check out musicyo.com, they sell Kramers, which look pretty decent, and are definetly better than squires. They also sell electar amps. It is a 30 watt tube amp, for way cheap. Both companies are owned by Gibson now, so the quality should be good. Also check out Route101.com, they have nice strat like guitars.

DiMarzio Super Distortion pickups can give some crunchy, heavy sound. Seymour Duncan customs are my favorite.
:Also, is it possible to make some sort of connector in my guitar so that i may switch pickups easily?
There are lots: 5-way switches, specialized 5-way (like in the PRS guitars), 3-way, Fender Jaguar style, mini-toggles, and more. They’re only a few bucks in any guitar parts catalog. The Jaguar style ones can let you put your pickups out of phase, too, for some extra treble and bite.

Hello, My name is Allen Culbertson and I also own a cort effector all I can help you with on your problem is: It’s so heavy cause it has a soild maple body (or that what the guy who owned the shop told me), The value of one with 3 gold knobs, with the 2 way gold plated whammy system, the 6 brass effect buttons, the gold tuneing knobs at top, and sterling silver fine tuning screws (like the modle I have) is somewhere in the area of $400-$500 dollars the one you have discribed on your post should be somewhere in the area of $300 dollar value (just depends if it’s the strat modle or the explorer modle.) You also said yours has 2 pickups does it have 2 single pick up or 2 double pick ups? If you need some more help on finding out values/where it came from/or anything else about it just e-mail me back and I’ll go ask the man who owns the shop I bought it from about it for you. -Al P.S. – It may be a bulky and heavy guitar but it is a very good insturment (except when the battery for the effects system dies) but other than that out of the other 3 guitars I have my cort is the best I’ve got.

one day it just snapped and i had to have a guitar, so i want to learn as much as i can before i buy one. i’m 14 so i have a rather limited price range.
should i buy one of those guitar packs that come with everything a beginner needs? i found a fender pack that comes with a squire strat, an amp (it didn’t say how many watts), a tuner, strap, picks, extra strings, etc. for about 80. i know that the squires suck to high heaven or whatever, but i’m a beginner and it doesn’t really matter to me. does this sound like a good idea? if not, please tell me what does.. -

Hey guys,
I used to play a lot of jackson guitars back in the eighties when i was mostly metal. Since Ive gotten old <g> Ive expanded my musical tastes a bit. Ive got a couple of strats now that ive been using for rock/blues. NOW, the metal bug has bitten me again for some reason and Im getting cramps in my right hand from palm muting (the strats vol knob is right in the way so I have to sort of lift the lower part of my hand). Any of you guitar teacher types know of any stretches or anything that may help? (only non-destructive please:)
Thanks

I’m using those in a Lone Star strat.. If the quack you are referring to is the SRV/Buddy Guy quack, then these pickups will probably help.
: I’ve just picked up a used Strat at a bargain price and I am thinking of changing the p/ups for Fender Texas Specials. Does anyone have any experience of these? I’ve heard that they’re quite "focused" as regards tone. I’m using a Fender Twin Reverb amp with another Strat at the mo’ (3 Lace Sensors,2 Silver,neck/middle and 1 Red at bridge) and I am looking for something with a little more "quack" in positions 2 & 4.
: I play mainly blues/funk and have no need for a really big humbucker type sound.
: Any help would be most appreciated.

A guy walks into a shop, walks up to the counter and says,"I’d like to buy a Les Paul please." The shop assistant looks at him and says "You’re not a guitarist. You’re a drummer!"
The guy looks at the shop assistant and says "Wow!How do you know that? I’ve only just started playing guitar. What gave me away? Must be my forearms, right?"
The shop assistant stares at the guy and says "No sir, this is McDonald’s."

I was just wondering whether to get a Peavey Bandit 112 or a bigger Marshall amp. I like the distortion on the Peavey and that is what I mostly play, plus it works well with my Epiphone guitar. On the other hand, My band is starting to get publicity and may or may not start playing bigger shows, so I might need a bigger amp. Also, I’ve tried a Marshall with my guitar and it goes pretty well, but not the same as the Epiphone. I’m completely torn on the issue, so could you give me some feedback? Thanks.

Why not try your local library? The Star Spangled Banner is featured on, for example, "Experience Hendrix: The Best of Jimi Hendrix". They have that in sheet music as well, if I remember correctly. You should have no problem in finding it – if they don´t have it you can ask them to order it for you.
The quality will definetely be way different from what you might be able to find from the net…

Hi Gil. Generally speaking, I think it is cheaper to buy in Canada. This is especially true in Toronto and perhaps Vancouver. A few years ago I bought a Taylor acoustic guitar and got it at the American list price but paid in Canadian dollars. Anyway, things may have changed but check out Steve’s Music on Queen Street west in Toronto if you are going to be in that city.

First off, I must admit that I believe the pick is the most limiting device ever created for guitar with a very few small exceptions. Other options would be to look at Mark Knofler of the Dire Straits, who plays electric guitar fairly well and uses only his hands. Another option would be to get finger picks so you’ll have the feel of using your fingers somewhat, but the sound of plastic on steel. For better or worse.
: I almost gave up the electric guitar cuz I dont like picking but I can do 3 note per string scales at 140 bpm playing 16th note triplets ( 6 notes per click ) with a metronome with hammer ons and pull offs with my left hand – I cant do that on an acoustic with nylon strings ( I almost switched to classical guitar ). I like to keep my right hand fingers off of the guitar while Im picking so I have to keep my palm light on the strings near the bridge for balance – thats the way they teach to position your right hand in most music colleges. If I change strings with my forearm ( elbow ) I have to palm mute far away from the bridge while Im picking the low E so my palm is still on the lower strings while Im picking the high E because of the way the forearm moves the pick up and down the strings diagnaly. I dont like to hear my lower strings muted that much. So Im tryin to change strings with my wrist cuz the wrist moves the pick up and down the strings in a half circle and it works better for palm muting. I can pick fast (?) ( 110 16th note triplets ) with my wrist or forearm on one string at a time but I dont feel right changing strings with my wrist like my hand isnt large enough (?). I have small hands. The only way I can reach all 6 strings moving the pick up and down the strings with my wrist is if I slant the pick up at the low E and A strings. I can keep the pick pointing straight at the guitar on the D, G, B, and high E but I have to have the pick angled at the low E and A strings so Im picking the right side of the string instead of the top of the string. Does anyone else do that? Can you make a habbit out of that? I dont mind doing it that way but it seems like it might be too inconsistent to do it fast with a straight scale. I copied that right hand technique from Paul Gilbert and he looks like he has his pick straight at the guitar on every string – his hands seem larger than mine – it might be hand size.

Your Growth as a guitarist: vertical or horizontal?
By Jamey AndreasAs the years go by in the life of a player, there are two kinds of
growth we
can experience. Both are necessary for our development as musicians and
guitarists. I call them Vertical Growth, and Horizontal Growth. Here is a common scenario. A person comes in for lessons after already
playing for awhile. Maybe they have played for a year, maybe a few
years,
maybe many years. I say, "play something for me, something you are
comfortable with". Now a few different things may happen. They may play
nicely, strumming and singing, maybe even throw in a few runs. So I see
that
for the level they are at, they play well. I then try to find out what
they
are here for. "What do you want to do, that you find you can’t do."They may say "Well, I play lots of things, but I play them all the same
way.
I want to learn how to do chord melody solos, more interesting chords
and
strums, and also improve my fingerpicking so I can try some
classical.". In
other words, they want to move to a higher level as a player. They want
to
make VERTICAL GROWTH.They don’t want to continue to learn new songs and play them the same
way.
That would be HORIZONTAL GROWTH. Everyone can always make Horizontal
Growth,
even on their own. You just learn more material, but you don’t actually
play
any differently, musically or technically.Vertical progress as a player is the tough one. It requires what is
usually
considered "work", although I have always found it enjoyable, although
challenging. Here is another even more common scenario. Someone comes in for lessons
after
playing for awhile, and when I ask them to play, they make a couple of
excuses, and then they play really badly! Then I ask them to play
something
else, and they play that really badly! This is the person unable to
create
Vertical Growth. The reason they cannot raise their level as a player,
is
because THEY DON’T KNOW HOW TO PRACTICE TO SOLVE PROBLEMS AND ACHIEVE
RESULTS! Also, because of this, there is no solid foundation of
technique for
Vertical Growth to be built upon. So there is only Horizontal Growth,
more
things played the same way, in this case, badly.Do you know how many young players I’ve seen who play only the
beginning of a
hundred songs, and play them badly? Lots.Or how many people playing classical who go from piece to piece,
struggling
with and mutilating pieces as they go? Lots. It is sad, and
unnecessary. If you love the guitar, and are dedicated to your own development as a
player, if you are dying to play the way the guitarists you admire
play, you
must know how to create Vertical Growth. This is done through an
understanding of HOW TO PRACTICE. I am of course talking about REAL
PRACTICE,
not repetitive "run throughs" that only re-enforce the muscle tensions
causing the problems you already have. From my experience as a player and as a teacher, it is extremely
difficult to
create Vertical Growth, once bad, or insufficient practice has locked
in
tension and bad habits. The good news is, it is not impossible. In
fact, the
word difficult is not the best word. I use it only because we have such
a
tendency to under-estimate the intensity of concentration it takes to
undo
past damage. A better word is challenging. And if you want to keep
getting
better and better as a guitarist, you’d better learn to love
challenges! As
Mark Twain said "Life is one damn thing after another", and that is
what
playing and practicing are. One damn problem to deal with after
another.
But as we learn to actually deal with and solve those problems, what a
sweet
reward we earn.In fact, it is not the problems we face in our playing that are really
the
obstacle to our growth. It is the growing feeling of frustration and
helplessness we experience as time continues to go by, and we see no
fundamental improvement. We start to feel helpless. We may not admit
this
feeling to ourselves, we only notice that, for some reason, we are
beginning
to lose our motivation to practice. When we learn how to really practice, we start to feel powerful.
Problems and
challenges don’t frighten us, they excite us. Because we know that we
can
look forward to those problems getting smaller and smaller, weaker and
weaker, as we continue to apply the Principles of Correct Practice. It is important to realize that the quality of our Vertical Growth
determines
the quality of our Horizontal Growth. Any ability we have gained as
players
has been our Vertical Growth. If our Vertical Growth has been shaky,
with
weaknesses built in, (which was true of myself, and I think, most
players),
that shakiness will be in everything we play, so our Horizontal Growth
doesn’t do us much good, it just keeps us busy, feeling like we are
making
progress because we are learning a new song or piece. This is why so
many
teachers turn the page and assign new material to a student, even
though the
student can’t play the material from this week. The teacher doesn’t
really
know how to create Vertical Growth, and so is trying to keep a feeling
of
movement going. Most students, if they are paying attention, will catch
on to
this.If Vertical Growth is strong, than all new material learned will be
strong,
and will help you grow as a musician, as you absorb new music, and are
able
to play it well. This is the kind of Horizontal Growth we want.If you want to learn how to have this Vertical Growth as a regular
experience
for you, I invite you to visit <A
HREF="http://www.guitarprinciples.com">www.g
uitarprinciples.com,</A> and learn more about "The Principles of
Correct
Practice for Guitar". It is the approach I have found to work for
myself, for
my students, and anyone else who actually understands it, and uses it.copyright 2000 by Jamey Andreas (www.guitarprinciples.com)

I was wondering if anyone knows a good way to beef up the bass and the volume, I was thinking of buying a 200 watt carvin 810 and using my external speaker jack on frontman to make it happen. I know it would work in that sound would be produced but would it sound good. I would appreciate any responses thanks, Dave.

they just ain’t what they used to be are they?…the wall was definitely a swan song for the floyd’s in my humble opinion, even though there was still the final cut with roger, it just didn’t do much for me i’m afraid…and for the floyd’s without rog…forget it!..the schizophrenic edge that marked their best works from the old "syd days" to the wall are long gone, taking one of the best dynamic elements away from a band who lived in their theatrical use of dynamicism…to anyone thinking of buying a new floyd album i say take that money and finish collecting the rest of the works with rog, including the syd barrett one’s so you can see for yourself how boring and semi-lifeless the new stuff appears to be….and i love gilmour’s playing…but it just isn’t the same, and never will be….even if roger was to come back, that moment has passed, and it wouldn’t be the same ever again…

On Monday July 3, Napster submitted its rebuttal to the RIAA’s request for a preliminary injunction against the company. Unlike its original claim of protection as an ISP under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), the firm has shifted its defense
to argue that sharing MP3 files of recorded musical works is in fact protected under fair usage rules. The implications and repercussions of this defense, if accepted by the Court, would literally redefine the manner in which copyright has been perceived by the industry, not to mention the evolution of online
business models. Do Napster users actions constitute private, noncommercial use of copyright protected works? Does the service materially harm or enhance the value of such works? Is the recording industry partially at fault? What do you think? -

One of my favorite guitarists uses a 13 millisecond delay in his left channel and a 26 millisecond delay in his right channel. I love his sound and would like to recreate certain aspects of it. My question is, could I run 2 delays in a row(one at 13ms and the other at 26ms) in my chain using the same channel and basically do the same thing.

Pink Floyd, at one time, were one of the preeminent creative forces in rock at a time when rock was just beginning to really mature as an art form. They really began to blossom in the early seventies when their earlier weird psychedelic experimentations started to take shape into more cohesive and powerful works of art, and that momentum carried them all the way through to The Wall. By that point, however, their journey had pretty much run its course, they were no longer lean and hungry with something to prove, and they started disliking their situation (and each other) intensely. Roger Waters and the rest of the guys parted ways (with a bitterness that continues to this day), and from then on, the creative cocktail would no longer have all the necessary ingredients. The fire had burned itself out.
Nowadays, Floyd are comfortable, secure English gentlemen who have earned the right to relax and play the old hits just for fun. Considering the road they took to get to this point, I won’t begrudge them putting out safe, formulaic retreads of "Learning To Fly" if it means they’re happy and not at each others’ throats.
Boring? Hell, yes. Everything from "The Final Cut" to the present has just sounded like four old guys (I’m including Waters here) who used to be Pink Floyd. But we still have all the old albums, don’t we?

I transcribed a couple of bagpipe tunes for guitar, "The Black Mill" and "Lord Lovat’s Lament". You can hear them at http://www.mp3.com/jimgraham

hmm, pink floyd! there are some albums on my shelf that no-one can call boring. in many aspects and details, there were ahead of their time. nevertheless, i know quite boring music by pink floyd in the 90’s. hey, whaddaya want? they were one of the greatest bands ever and to many still they are! four british guys with a bundle of great ideas and attitude. cÄ’mon in boy, have a cigar – oh yes, one of the most cynical coments on rock biz. those were the 70’s: the best earning band dared to spit into the face of big biz! haven’t noticed limp biz doing this yet…

: anyone into JohnnyMarr stuff w/ the smiths? : I’ve learned most of their songs and realized that : many of the tabs out there are garbage William can be found in its entirety in a back catalogue of ‘Total Guitar’ magazine around nov ’99 and it is a very good tab. But it is incredibly difficult to get right and johnny always layers 2,3 or more guitars together so it can be confusing. good luck JL : If anyone knows the accurate way to play : William it was really nothing : (i saw this one tabbed in a British magazine, : but i don’t know how to find it.) : or: : some girls are bigger than others? : money changes everything? : queen is dead? : well.. that’s enough for now. : please feel free to email & : if you haven’t checked out the latest : Electronic CD… it’s pretty damn good. : : darius

Hey Neil, I thought you won the amp, but from what I see, you are giving it away in a Guitartrader.com contest. Please pick me, I could use an amp. Right now I got a used Crate amp, I could use a Marshall. BTW, I meant having a pulse, by everybody having a pulse, not just yourself. I always though that Pink Floyd was one of those bands that just changed music for the better

i agree about getting an accoustic b4 u get an electric. it’s not as glamorus but its smarter. i’m in australia and i can tell you, you can not get a decent guitar for anything under at least 450-500 bucks. i dont know how that translates worldwide. and get a good accoustic. if u get a crappy guitar for ur first, elec or acc, you’ll end up hating it. it’ll go outta tune and sound terrible. and as for which guitar, cart ur arse on in to ur local music shop and look around. touch, feel! bring one of ur olds so it looks like u might buy something. THEN they’ll let u play. : )
as for u jessie h, yamaha is a pretty solid guitar company. its not like gibson or fender etc, but its certainly a pretty good mid-range guitar.

One easy suggestion, try to purchase an acoustic with a solid top (verses a laminate) this way at least when your ear has developed you may just have choosen a guitar you’ll want to hang on to. Tell tale signs of low quality (painted fingerboard and bridge, they spray/stain it black to look like ebony -finish sealing the neck joint, the neck was glued on before the guitar was painted- painted on binding- crappy tuners)Once in a while though, a cheap old Harmony or such will surprise me, that’s why it’s hard to throw an entire brand in the junk heap. The best advice is buy something with easy action/playability and save your money for when your ear and style has improved enough to make a educated choice. Good Luck!

Hey–I’m also a beginner living in China. The best (most expensive) acoustic/electric guitar they have where I am is a Yamaha APX 4A for a little more than 00 American buck. I’m sure Yamaha is a good company, but could somebody who knows tell me how good they are, how could this specific model is, and how good this price is? Where does Yamaha rate in the guitar world? Thanks, Jesse H.

I have a Boss Metalzone but was curious if there are any other pedals that can give off a (real) punk distortion. Like Crass, Dead Kennedys, Misfits etc.

Hey Neil congrates on the Marshall amp, lucky basterd. Anyway, if you think Pink Floyd is boring, you don’t have a pulse yourself. All their music is deep, and motivating. They are one of the best prog rock bands ever. From DSOTM, to The Wall, they are just an extremely talented, and entertaining band. I can’t avoid listening to a whole record, when I start listening to them. -
