Re: mexican and american strats

Mexican Strats are made of Poplar, while Americans are made of either Alder or Ash (lighter than poplar). Because of this, they have a bit more resonance, on average, than the mex strats/teles do. It's my understanding that the pickups are better on the American versions also, however to figure that out you'd have to play both of them, right after the other, through the same amp on the same settings on the same day... truth is I'm not sure of the pickups. This year, they also redesigned the American Strats. The neck is contoured a bit differently, the headstock only restrains the E string instead of both the B and E.

Re: mexican and american strats

I've owned a Mexican Strat since they first came out (in about 1993). It is definately my main guitar. I like the sound and feel of it just as much as an American Strat; for me the extra cost isn't justified. My advice is to try them both out on the exact amp they will be played through, and buy the one that sounds best and feels best for you. Or, you can buy the Mexican sunburst with a blonde neck and be perfectly happy.

Kahler Spyder Question

I have an old guitar with a kahler Spyder trem on it. Does anyone have experience of it; how does it rate to the Cam type (pro/flyer series)??

Thanks a lot

Re: Kahler Spyder Question

I had one on a custom guitar once.I thought it was very good even though it was bulky. You could do double bends without detuning the other strings cause of the weight.Changing strings could be a hassle but it was very reliable.
Good Luck

GT3 and amps

I use a Mesa Boogie DC5 combo together with a Boss GT3; it is very difficult to find an acceptable sound, especially overdrive. Does anyone have a good advise?
Did anyone try the 4-cable method in order to use the combo's preamp?

how to tell model info on OVATION

I know this sounds stupid, but I have come in to possession of an Ovation guitar, and see nothing on it to tell me serial number, model, age, etc. Am I looking in all the wrong place

Re: how to tell model info on OVATION

It has been my experience that the model# and serial# are located on a sticker inside the body. Just look in to the sound-hole.

Baldwin/burns virginian

I am searching for a Baldwin/Burns Virginian two pickup
semi acoustic built '65-'67. Any help would be appreciated.Thanks-Jerry L.

Re: Baldwin/burns virginian

i have one, but i live in australia and burns are rare as over here let alone the quirky ones. might sell if the price is right

Re: Baldwin/burns virginian

I have an old Baldwin that has two pickups but i am not sure of the year and am having a hard time finding information. The pick ups are burns but the pick guard has baldwin on it and virginian is on the neck.

A,mpeg Reverberocket

I am planning to buy a reverberocket if I can find one at a good price. I just have it in my head that I want one, and that sound. I'm wondering if anyone out there plays through a reverberocket and what you think of it. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated. Thanks from an up and coming songwriter and fair guitar player.

need advice

hey everyone,
don't know if this is where I'm supposed 2 post these kind of messages but i'm doing it anyway. I have played electric guitar for a little over a year now, and feel like i am stuck. I have worked out basic books, tryed some lessons but I can't afford them,(I'm only 14), and I need some kind of goal to push myself.
if any one out there knows a great book to push me, an intermediate guitar player, I would be very greatfull. or even some helpfull hints.
thanx
brian

Re: need advice

Everyone is different and what's good for one player is useless for another, but...why don't you try not using books for awhile and play along with songs you like on tapes/CDs or better yet...play along with the radio? Try copying what you are hearing or else try making something up that you think fits. You'll be surprised what you can do and learn when you get the hang of it. Don't take it seriously, just have fun messing about.

Re: need advice

The band idea is really good. nothing forces you to push like a group will. Feedback from others and you all pass tricks around. And its fun even if you never get out of a garage !!!!

Re: need advice

My advice would be to form a band with kids of your playing abilitiy

What year is it ?

I have an Ovation Ultra, model #1528, made in Korea. How can I tell what year it is from ? I saw somewhere on the NET, that the RANGE of the serial # dictates the age of the guitar. According to this source, the guitar was built 1979. I am sure, however, that this guitar was purchased NEW between 1985 and 1990. What gives ? Does anyone know what is going on ??? Please email me if you have any idea, and thanks in advance !!!

What model is it ?

I have a real nice Ibanez Artist, built in Japan in 1986. It has a beautiful sunburst top, gold hardware, incredible pearl inlays, two humbuckers, etc... "Super Edition" is displayed in the 12th fret inlay. I was wondering if anyone knows if this thing has a model # (such as ARxxxx), like the other artists....Also, does anyone have an accurate value on this thing ? Please email me if you know something. Thanks in advance....

i have the same guitar only mine is white with off white in different light I paid 1000.00 and was told it would be much more valuble in time, please email me with any info you find thank you

What is This Effect Called?

I need an effect but don't know the name for it, it could be just heavy distortion, anyway, i'll give some examples of the effect i'm trying to get:

First guitar sound in Papa Roach - Last Resort.
First sound in Limp Bizkit - Break Stuff.
First Guitar sound in Alien Antfarm - Smooth Criminal.

I hope that is enough to demonstrate the kind of effect I need, (perhaps those three are different from each other.?..).

Could you please tell me the name of that effect, and what to buy to achieve it (which pedal or whatever).

Thanks

Re: What is This Effect Called?

what you want is an boss overdrive pedal, or ibanez tube screamer

Which pedal??

Do you know which pedal (mark & model) used JERRY HORTON (PAPA ROACH´s guitarist) to record the new albun "INFEST"

gibson es 295 vs. epiphone by gibson es 295

Hi there,
can anybody tell me, if there is such a big difference between these two (except from the price) and in case I would find the epihone, which changes will be necessary in order to get the same sound.
Thank you very much in advance.
Anette

Re: gibson es 295 vs. epiphone by gibson es 295

The two guitars are pretty similar, with similar sound. Anyway, you could change the pickups of the Epiphone with the ones of a Gibson in order to get the ultimate sound of the Gibson. Cheers.

Re: gibson es 295 vs. epiphone by gibson es 295

I've owned both of them, and the Epiphone will rival any vintage 295 that i've seen or played. I had a 1954 ES-295 a number of years ago and loved the guitar. Too bad that the theves did also. Anyway, the two guitars are very similar, with similar sound. The Gibson's top is fully arched, and the Epiphone's top is only arched in the lower half of the body. Also, the Gibson top is cut out to accommodate the two P-90's, which effects the acoustic characteristics of the guitar. The Epiphone on the other hand has the pick-ups mounted on a small riser that's glued to the top, giving far greater acoustic resonance. This baby unplugged, is as loud as most acoustic guitars !
As for playability and workmanship, my Epiphone is as good as any Gibson that i've ever owned. Flawless seams, binding to body & paint is superior to a lot of Gibson's that i'm seeing these days. They're made the way that Gibson's used to be made. The neck is as good as any ES-175 that i've ever played, and i've played a bunch of them over 35 years. Sound & tone, again as good as anything that Gibson has going. Sure you could put Gibson P-90's in it, but I havn't seen the need to yet, but if that rears it's head, i'll swap 'em out. Just remember that Gibson has owned Epiphone since 1957, so the components have to be very similar, if not outright Gibson issue.
I ignored the Epi's for a long time, thought they were a #2 guitar, well not anymore ! My ES-295 is as good as any vintage guitar, at a fraction of the price. There will always be the turkey that will show up from time to time, from every guitar manufacturer, that somebody gets stuck with. I just think that Epiphone seems to be taking greater pride in their workmanship than their big brother Gibson is doing, making a product that we all can afford, and in a few years, we'll have a collectable. I hope that you have much enjoyment playing your new ES-295 as i'm having.
God Bless, Lindsay

Refinishing a guitar

How about a little background info first. I purchased an electric Washburn about a year ago from a friend's brother. It only costed me 75$ and isn't that bad of a guitar. It has a "cobalt blue" finish that looks more like purple.

A week ago a friend and I started stripping it of that purple color. Because of the lack of tools available to us, we used screwdrivers to chip it off. It worked very well, but my friend every now and then made a big nick in the clear finish under the purple. I've left the clear finish on, but should i take it off? What are the best ways to take it off?

Also, If I am supposed to take the clear finish off, what tools should i use? Afterwards, what kind of finishes should I use? I realize im pretty ignorant about this but some info would be awesome.

Thanks, Patrick

Patrick;
Check out Stewart Macdonald's at www.stewmac.com for all your refinishing needs. I am presently working on a VOX teardrop 12 string (starstream MKII) Body stripped and ready to finish and neck mostly stripped. Had to sand down neck to get clear plastic finish off. I have been very pleased with the equiptment and parts I have recieved from them.

if you know ampeg and/or bass gear HELP ME!

i need some new bass gear and i dont know shit about amps or anything but im looking to get an ampeg svt-3pro head but i dont know what kind of cab to get. my budget is $1600 for the head and the cab together. im in a band that is doing shows every other week so i need something big but not too big. what cab would go good with an svt-3pro and is an svt-3pro good or is there better for the same amount of cash? thanks.

Re: if you know ampeg and/or bass gear HELP ME!

the pro series is ment for more of a jazz type of sound. unless thats your sound then i would go with the classic series. you can get an svt-350h classic head from musiciansfriend.com for $679.99. and unless your a jazz musician stick with the classic series cabs.

How well made are the high end korean guitars?

Are the higher end korean guitars as well made as some american and japanese guitars? For example ESP' LTD series, Schecter guitars, Jay Turser... Minus the hardware I would like to know if the actual structure of these guitars are good. Much appreciated thanks K.

The quality has improved dramatically over the last few years. Some are incredible value. The cheapies are made elsewhere now.

Re: How well made are the high end korean guitars?

Actually, I have an added question. Does anyone know about a Korean brand of the name "Songbird"? It looks very much like an ovation. If you could e-mail me any info I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

Re: How well made are the high end korean guitars?

I agree with the above post except for one brand: Jay Turser guitars, in my opinion as a luthier and repairman, mostly don't measure up. It's true that they are often visually gorgeous, but I have YET to pick one up that had a decent fret-job on it. I find an excess of buzzes and fret-outs, and I don't care if the guitar is made of solid gold; if the frets are bad the guitar is a dud until you spend big bucks for a re-fret. Admittedly, this isn't limited to a Korean brand---I've worked on at least a dozen high-end Paul Reed Smith "beauties" that had HORRIBLE frets! In general, the High-end Samicks are excellent all around. I got my hands on a '98 Samick Charlie Christian Model once---and that baby gave a Gibson L-5 a REAL run for the money.

Re: Epi is made by SAMICK, NOT Cort

BTW---Epiphone, as well as the mid-level IBZs are made by SAMICK, NOT Cort. I've been both an Epi and Samick dealer and have spoken many times with reps of both companies.

The Korean guitars I have purchased from Agile are absolutly as good as the american made counterparts only much much cheaper.

Re: How well made are the high end korean guitars?

the quality has gotten better. I believe Cort makes most now in their factory (Epiphone, LTD, low end Ibanezes). They are always cheaper cost-wise and thus make okay backup guitars.

Re: How well made are the high end korean guitars?

I am a guitar PLAYER not a collector, and i prefer the japanese guitars of the 70s the most superior instruments ever made for playability. I think the el-cheapo guitars made in India and Korea are far better than the name brand American and mexican guitars, and the price is right, The only difference i find is that the finishes suck on some of the indain guitars, so what? again, i play them not display them. My Hondo les paul made in the 70s is far more playable than any gibson i ahve ever played, and the pickups are smooth. My LOTUS strat has a better neck than most of the fenders I ahve had, and the neck stays univorm, Fender necks always seemed to me to need constant adjustment, they changed too much.

I agree with everything above, except you got the companywrong: SAMICK makes the brands you mentioned along with Washburn and Schecter and quite a few others---they're the largest guitar maker in the world, and produce BY THEMSELVES over 40% of the guitars made on this planet each year.

Re: How well made are the high end korean guitars?

I would say yes. I'm from Singapore and owning guitar that would cost me thousands is kind of ex.... I now have a nice but cheap electric accustic that sounds perfect.. and it's made like an Ovation... so i think that the Koreans deserve a clap.

Are all Gretsch Pick-ups wired this way???

I almost bought an amber Gretsch 6114 electric, but,
I found that with the pick-up selector swith in the
middle position and with the neck pick-up volume
turned all the way down, I got no signal from the
bridge pick-up, AT ALL! (master volume was up).
Is this right? Are they all wired that way?
I returned, which was hard 'cause I loved the way
it played. Pls resp.
