Mexican Strats are made of Poplar, while Americans are made of either Alder or Ash (lighter than poplar). Because of this, they have a bit more resonance, on average, than the mex strats/teles do. It's my understanding that the pickups are better on the American versions also, however to figure that out you'd have to play both of them, right after the other, through the same amp on the same settings on the same day... truth is I'm not sure of the pickups. This year, they also redesigned the American Strats. The neck is contoured a bit differently, the headstock only restrains the E string instead of both the B and E.

: I use a Mesa Boogie DC5 combo together with a Boss GT3; it is very difficult to find an acceptable sound, especially overdrive. Does anyone have a good advise?

It has been my experience that the model# and serial# are located on a sticker inside the body. Just look in to the sound-hole.

Everyone is different and what's good for one player is useless for another, but...why don't you try not using books for awhile and play along with songs you like on tapes/CDs or better yet...play along with the radio? Try copying what you are hearing or else try making something up that you think fits. You'll be surprised what you can do and learn when you get the hang of it. Don't take it seriously, just have fun messing about.

: I have an Ovation Ultra, model #1528, made in Korea. How can I tell what year it is from ? I saw somewhere on the NET, that the RANGE of the serial # dictates the age of the guitar. According to this source, the guitar was built 1979. I am sure, however, that this guitar was purchased NEW between 1985 and 1990. What gives ? Does anyone know what is going on ??? the pro series is ment for more of a jazz type of sound. unless thats your sound then i would go with the classic series. you can get an svt-350h classic head from musiciansfriend.com for $679.99. and unless your a jazz musician stick with the classic series cabs.

The quality has improved dramatically over the last few years. Some are incredible value. The cheapies are made elsewhere now.

I would say yes. I'm from Singapore and owning guitar that would cost me thousands is kind of ex.... I now have a nice but cheap electric accustic that sounds perfect.. and it's made like an Ovation... so i think that the Koreans deserve a clap.
