Charvel Tremolo

A friend gave me a mid-80s Charvel/Jackson single P/U
as a spare to my Les.
The factory tremolo is the cheesy one-way tailpiece
with the spring tensioners in the back and it won't
stay in tune even if I don't use it.
I've got $100 in gift certificates to Sam Ash, and I
want to install a real two-way tremolo and locking
tuners but I know nothing about the hardware.

How easy are they to install, am I going to have to
modify the guitar body? Can I find one for $100
that will be an improvement? What should I look for?

Thanks

I'm not sure what exactly you are looking for. Your Charvel probably has an imitation Floyd style bridge made by Jackson. The best units made are Original Floyd Rose units, which include a locking nut. But if you're not happy with the design of your current system, you probably won't like the real Floyd Rose either. For $100 you won't get anything anyway. A new tremolo unit is at least $150. It is also a major project to install a new unit, especially if you want to intall a locking nut on a neck that isn't built for one. It will weaken the neck also. Your big problem is that you are shopping at Sam Ash which is very expensive. I would go to an independant music store and discuss your options with them.

In my case, because I'd go insane w/o it...plus I make a fairly good living and I'm too lazy to get a "real" job!

For me, I enjoy doing anything which requires creativity. The guitar just heppened to be the first thing I picked up as a kid, but it teaches you many things which are important later on, like patience, a deeper appreciation for the creativity of others, and not to mention it saved my life in secondary school!

Re: doing a report....I REALLY NEED YOUR HELP

I pretty much always played because I enjoyed it. I wasn't really interested in playing to make other people happy or whatever, I just wanted to enjoy myself. I guess it aids self-esteem because when I can play difficult things, or write things that I like, I feel good about myself and I'm not thinking about anything bad. Not to mention I'd go fucking crazy if I couldn't play to relax and get my mind off of shit such as finals. Also chicks always like guys who can make a guitar sing (not that this is why I play), think about it- Slash must have gotten laid more than anyone else in Guns n' Roses, because he was the "mysterious guitarist".
Aside from these, there are still lots of other reasons to play.

Re: doing a report....I REALLY NEED YOUR HELP

It's a good release- a good safe way to express yourself w/o harming yourself or anybody. Umm what else- get's you girls lol- I don't know for me personally it was an expression/release thing. I always said that if I could do what the bands I looked up to at the time did for me- then it would be worth it. And Now I'm there and I can say it's worth it. There is nothing more gratifying to me than a kid coming up and telling me our songs make a difference or made them feel better or gave them a different perspective on a situation etc. Good times good times-

Re: doing a report....I REALLY NEED YOUR HELP

Personally, I play it because I want to. And I think that's usually the underlying motivation. But when u grow up and realise u can make money out of it, personally I just aimed straight at that area because its a career, AND i'm gonna be having fun at the same time. Most people don't get to do that.

People should play guitar 'cause its a way to express themself. I play 'cause i love music and i wanted to learn anyway

Music is one of the most important ways that people transmit values and ideas. When you play a musical instrument your telling the world something about who you are and what you believe.Check out my web site: www.mp3.com/johney rock

Re: doing a report....I REALLY NEED YOUR HELP

I believe that playing a musical Instrument is beneficial. It enhances your capabilities in terms of memory. And it increases your ability as a wage earner. But I also believe that playing and not studying the Greats is a losers attitude. You can't create music in a total vaccum, someone must inspire you to become great. I also believe that learning how to read music and tab is a must. Backing up a CD a thousand times while trying to figure out a solo of chord pattern is not the smartest think to do. Studying going through books page by page building technique is what you have to do, as well as playing scales. Al Diemeola speaks of Economy of movement, meaning having your finger as close to the string as you can get before striking it. Having your fingers to high off the fretboard is fool's play. You simply can't play with speed doing that. Using a Riff Master isn't a bad idea either, that way you can take a fast solo like George Benson and spread it out and understanding the way the solo is structured on the front middle and end. Playing it at his speed is another problem. All of these Pro's like Johnson and Benson use the Circle Picking Technique, Without understanding this technique forget about speed picking. It could take years just to learn how to do this. And someday down the road you'll have a tremendous feeling of accomplishment. And then perhaps you'll run into a young guy who you can teach. Enhanced memory, ability to turn a profit, satisfaction of accomplishment, along with having pride, and the ability to pass on what you've learned is something that I cherish. Remember anything worth doing is worth doing well.

99.99% of all guitar players are never going to make
a decent living playing guitar so don't make that your
motivation. You might pick up beer money but usually the
meager pay from bars, lounges, bar mitzvahs etc., barely covers strings and rehearsal time.
There are lots of good reasons to play though:
-it's creative
-it's relaxing
-it's satisfying ( but sometimes frustrating )
-it's entertaining ( for others too )
but mostly
It's Fun !!

Try listening. It takes time, but its very rewarding. Everyone can train his/her ears. I suggest you the ear training program "Earmaster". It is somewhere on the net. Bye bye

fender hot rod deluxe

I know the fender hot rod deluxe has no headphone jack, but it has a line out, can u just plug the headphones into the line out? or does this not work. speaking of which, do any all tube amps with that wattage have a headphone jack. i really like the deluxe but i want a headphone jack-does anybody know of an amp that has both those features? thanx

Re: fender hot rod deluxe

No, I don't believe you can plug a set of headphones into the Line-Out jack. That is used to connect a separate cabinet. I'm not sure which amps have headphone jacks, I guess you'll just have to shop around.

Re: fender hot rod deluxe

true, don't plug ur cans into the line out, i did ages ago with a lil peavy studio pro and **sniff sniff** yes thats burning plastic! a lil bit of smoke came outta my crappy headphones and ta da, they were no more. and whats more, it was'nt a big fireball or cooooool noise, so it's really not worth the cost of headphones for such a crap show!

and yeah, i'm pretty damn sure there's plenty of amps around 40(?) watts that've got headphone jacks. If u see one that says its got a recording out jack, that's also a headphone jack, so there ya go.

: )

Re: fender hot rod deluxe

The Line-Out on a Hot Rod Deluxe (or just about anything else) is a pre-amp send...you can go out the line out to another amp. On most amps, it shouldn't have enough power to run a set of headphones, and it's not for that. The fella that said his headphones blew up...maybe you plugged them into a speaker out or something...

Just turn the dern thing down and play quietly.

yamaha FG-300 guitar

I'm looking for a Yamaha FG 300 guitar in good condition. This instrument was made in the 60s and sold for about $110 to $120 at that time. I don't know when Yamaha quite making them. Please respond with price if interested in selling. I would also like to get an original case.

Re: yamaha FG-300 guitar

I have a FG-300 that I bought in 1971 in Baltimore for $150. I'm not particularly interested in selling it because it sounds so good, but I would be interested in knowing what it's worth these days, and why you're looking for a 30-year-old Yamaha guitar.

Re: yamaha FG-300 guitar

: I've got a FG-300 Nippon Gakki Yamaha. It is in good shape with the exception that the pickguard fell off and it is reglued on less the satisfactory. I oould have that fixed or sell it as is. Other wise in very good shape. I am the original owner. It was bought in 1971 in California.

Re: yamaha FG-300 guitar

I have a FG-300 that I bought new in 1971. It has the red label inside of it. I have been told that it was made in Japan as opposed to later models made in Korea. I also have the original hardshell case. Make me an offer.

Re: yamaha FG-300 guitar

I do not have a case and it is also missing a string. The guitar is in very good condition, but i must think about selling it because it was handed down to me by my father.

Re: yamaha FG-300 guitar

Anyone heard the Ozzy Osbourne tribute - Bat Head Soup?

It has Steve Lukather, Reb Beach, Yngwie Malmsteen, Paul Gilbert, George Lynch, Rochie Kotzen all playing on the same album!

Re: Anyone heard the Ozzy Osbourne tribute - Bat Head Soup?

someone lied to you it has brad gillis from night ranger playing guitar for randy after randy died so the tour could go on.

Re: Anyone heard the Ozzy Osbourne tribute - Bat Head Soup?

Ummmm.......no, Bat Head Soup is a tribute cd that Ozzy isn't even on, not "Speak Of The Devil" which features Brad Gillis.

GT3 -vs- RP2000

I'm looking at these two effect units as a practice tool (via headphones) and direct recording. My style of playing is essentially fingerstyle country, po and jazz using amplified nylon and steel string acoustics. Any recommendations?

Re: GT3 -vs- RP2000

Personally, I wouldn't choose either of these. They are designed for electric instruments (mainly). Since you are using acoustic guitars try looking at processors that are designed for acoustic instruments. I know DOD/Digitech makes one, I believe Boss makes one too. These would probably suit your need better than an electric processor. I hope this helps, Good luck.

GT3 -vs- RP2000 (really depends)

I would recommend the GT3! I have a GT5 (which is about $600 dearer) Anyway the GT3 is a fabulous effects processor and very cheap for what you are getting! I cannot however compare with the RP2000 because I have not played it, but it sounds to me like you want tone, tone, tone? So then I would recommend the RP2000. The GT3 is loaded with effects! In comparison the RP2000 is loaded with speaker simulatoins, emulators, ETC! The GT3 does however have great tone twitching options but is designed more for effects!

From personal experience, BOSS has to be the best quality of the two,it also is a great deal! I am regretting my dicision to buy the GT5 because the GT3 is basically the same but cheaper! It does more or less exacltly the same thing! Very cheap! Very useful and is jam packed with options!

I hope I have helped you if you want to know more, or have any other queries, I am here for your convenience!

Most likely you can find what your looking for at mp3.com.While your there, check out my site. www.mp3.com/johneyrock,all the stuff available there as a free download was done in my home studio.

Charvels, Kramers, Deans, Hamer, etc.

I'm interested to know people's opinions of the guitars commonly associated with the 1980's. Most younger players are only familiar with the low end imports made after these companies sold out to large corporations. Do people know about the high quality guitars made by companies like Kramer and Dean? In my experiences lately players think Charvels were made by Jackson!
