Circular picking ( with the index and thumb )
Anyone here use that?! Ive tried it alot cuz I thought it would be really cool cuz I think it feels cool to anchor fingers on the guitar and move the pick with the fingers instead of the wrist or forearm but I didnt think it would work - I play best with my wrist and forearm both at the same time. Then I heard of a couple people that play fast that way and I tried it some more. Last night I started "accidently" ( ?! ) shredding with it - I played some licks from Yngwie's "Far Beyond The Sun" and the last lick from that song at 160 16th notes and it felt so easy it was like cheating - like it took less physical effort for the same speed when I compared it to playing the same licks the way I usually do with my wrist and forearm together! I couldnt believe it was really happening cuz it was wierd. Like - if I think "move the fingers" its stiff, slow, and sloppy but if I think "pick fast in circles" it comes from the fingers naturally ( without telling myself to move from the fingers ) and its fast, comfortable, and acurate. Its not a "habit" to me so I cant play fast up and down all 6 strings very good and it seems hard to play metal rythym fast with it - I was trying "Angel of Death" by Slayer and "Fight Fire With Fire" by Metallica alot - I can play both at 170 ( with 16th notes ) with the wrist and forearm together but I could only do 140 with the fingers - maybe cuz it was hard to go from striking a chord and then back to picking fast with a motion Im not used to telling myself to make?!?! Does anyone else here play fast rythym and lead both with that?! Is that something you can use for everything all the time?! Everything - slow, fast, arpeggios, scalular, metal rythym, string skiping, ... Cuz that seems like it could be a really fun way to play the guitar if you can!
Re: Circular picking ( with the index and thumb )
Its amazing how much you can miss right under your nose!! You can go off on a topic as if its never been discussed on earth and not even know 70% of the posts in the same message board have been on that topic for 10 years! I found what I wanted to know on alot of message boards - it might be a good technique - Im gonna get an instruction video by a guy that plays that way and see what I think of his playing. I also found by accident - it seems nice to set your hand down naturally and keep your fingers where they are while your playing if you anchor. Ive always stuck them out straight ( in an unatural position ) when I anchor fingers. But I anchor 2 fingers - I dont know what that would be like with 3 fingers - I have small hands and I feel funny with 3 fingers on the guitar.
Re: Circular picking ( with the index and thumb )
Yes,I agree. When your fingers are anchored, you'll lose speed because the wrist is locked.Circular picking doesn't come over night, however.By practicing your speed and technique the fingers(right)will automatically begin to "gyrate".Steve Vai(Crossroads) has that shit down...because his BASIC technique is on the money!Gyrating doesn't work in all situations though, but when running straight scales it improves accuracy.Sounds like you've been wood-shedding...cool!!
Good Luck
I have about $500 US
This much to spend on a guitar...

I was looking at a gibson hummingbird....but i couldnt find the price anywhere..
Does anyone have any suggestions as to a similar style guitar for around that price or perhaps one to check out
Re: I have about $500 US
well, you're gonna probably want a case/tuner setup, so that puts you at a $400 or so guitar.

Recommended new music for Dt fans
I discovered this guy on one of the DT forums (john petrucci's I think): Chris Brooks. He's got killer audio samples that remind me of DT, Vinnie Moore and Vai. Sick chops, but even more impressive is his phrasing, tone and feel. Highly Recommended! I ordered his CD "THE MASTER PLAN" which comes out next week. If you like his influences I'm pretty sure you'd like this too.
If you're in a hurry, download the samples CRYPTICA, FUNKSION, and AXIOM.

start at ibanez.com
see if it is pictured there
Re: Sombody help me tell what model# my Ibanez Rg Is.
If your RG has two humbuckers, and a Floyd Roselow prfile double locking tremelo then it is probably a 320, if it has all that plus a single pickup inbetween the two humbuckers i think it would be a 520 or 540

Internet vs. Guitar Teacher
Ok, I know that there are tons of great guitarists out
there (some of them on this site, right? hehhehe...),
but what taught you better, an actual teacher or did you
teach yourselves? Internet vs. Teacher......?
Re: Internet vs. Guitar Teacher
TEACHER, TEACHER, TEACHER, TEACHER.
Re: Internet vs. Guitar Teacher
Was 'self taught' through school, and picked up alot playing constantly in bands... and at the time thought I was pretty good (but wasn't, just a good hack), In early 20's wanted to get to that 'next level' and and became more interested in other types of music (was into hardcore/metal back then) and nothing can beat a good teacher, theory and discipline defintely got me to the level I wanted and it has made it so much easier down the road... but on the flip side I know great players who are 'self taught', but I find that a loose term, as most good 'self taught' musicians have played (learned) from other musicians, which is like having a teacher, basically I think everyone learns from everyone they play with (and vice versa), even if it's that you don't like what/how they play :).

the thing is, a teacher is nice because you have that human interaction, plus, he/she can prevent you from developing bad habits
Re: Internet vs. Guitar Teacher
A teacher, definatly! Because a teacher can make personal observations on what you need to work on...Picking,fingering,right-hand/left hand coordination and such.Example;one could learn all the theory in the world, but if they can't play...what's the point??
Good Luck

hey, madman----don't rely on the internet to teach you anything--learning is by doing, and doing with other human beings is the best way to learn!! i consider myself self taught, but not without human interaction. the thing is, you need to learn the basics, and then feed your brain by listening to recordings and playing along with other musicians. yes, you can gain knowledge from the net,but--the best way to learn is to jam with someone who is better than you are!! we all know someone who knows more than we---tap into it!! and most towns that i've played in all have bars that feature open jam nights!! listen, ---you have your guitar idols, you have the c.d.'s--sit down with your guitar and try to learn the stuff. if you have an ear you will pick it up in time. time is the key word---lot's of practice----jam on!!!!

Re: Lefty Ovation value?
I can only offer you these chords for left handed guitarists, they may enhance the value you place on your left handed guitar - <a href="http://www.houlston.freeserve.co.uk/chordsforlefthandedguitarists.htm><font color="#00FFFF">Click Here</font></a>

Zach Wylde
Does anyone know what Zach Wylde is doing now. Is he still playing?
Re: Zach Wylde
: Does anyone know what Zach Wylde is doing now. Is he still playing?
yes.
Re: Zach Wylde
As far as I know, Zach is preparing for the upcoming OzzFest tour. His band, Black Label Society, will be the opening band for the Main Stage on this year's tour. He is also Ozzy's main man for guitar work when The Ozz Man hits the deck as headliner of the Main Stage. I also believe during the break from last year's OzzFest until now, he has been working on yet another album with BLS. Hope this helps...rock on!

Re: Zach Wylde
Zakk just finished the new Ozzy cd, and released his own new "Black Label Society" cd. Gibson made a signature series Les Paul Custom available to the public.. White and Black bullseye.

Re: Zach Wylde
I went and seen Zach at the Opera House in Toronto a few years ago, the band was called "THE BLACK LABEL SOCIETY". He rocked and looked as good as he ever did.

daion acutiic guitar
we have purchased a daion acutic guiter and would like some history and value informatoin on them thanks
Re: daion acutiic guitar
I purchased one in the early 80's for $300. It has the brass nut and bridge and inlays.I heard they were made fromlate 70's to mid 80's.Actual value to a music store is not much, but, the people that own them know that the deep tone is as good as it gets.It is a hard guitar to find. Most dealers and guitar shops have never heard of them. They might be an item someday,I'll never part with mine.

Spruce up the Floyd Rose....
Hey, whats up. I was wondering if there is anything I can do to my floyd rose to make it work better. I just broke the 1st 2nd & 4th string, it seems a little too easy to break the strings. Does anyone make any special saddles to help or is there anything I can do to help it? I'm using D'Addario 9-46's. Anyone suggest higher gauge strings or a special brand? I just ordered some Web Strings, only 2.58 for electric sets, I'll tell you all how they rate. And also, I dont like when I palm mute and it goes sharp, does anyone make a stopper? Thank you, Jeff
