It’s really not even a tremolo bar. Tremolo has nothing to do with it. It’s proper name is a vibrato bar. That is what it does, it bends the pitch up or down hence the name "vibrato" bar. Tremolo is completely different. It has to do with the fluctuation in volume, think of a tremolo pedal.

Try a Squire strat, not too much cash and an ever popular sound (and body shape).
Try playing some different guitars to get an idea of variation within a model.

Remeber a great guitar with a bad setup sounds bad.
Make sure the guitar you buy has had a recent setup, or factor this into the price.

      well…if I understood your question,
you have some thousands ways u can do it…
      seriously…counting with inversions…
      and…etc… wow… lots and lots!
the basic position should be like this:
(the lowest string is on the bottom, got it?)
      e —-0——-
      B —-0——-
      G —-1——-
      D —-0——-
      A —-2——-
      E —-0——-

let me know if you got it!
      See ya

The Harmony Model H73 was an electric thin hollow body with a partial cut away on the top of the neck and a full cut away at the bottom. The top left of the instrument had "Roy Smeck" painted(?) on it. As far as I know it only came in a red opague finish. It also had white control knobs and a white pick guard. It came equipmed with a vibrato tail piece but it was not a Bigsby. I received one for Christmas in 1965 and played it every day until 1969 when I traded it on a Les Paul Custom. : : H cris : : There are some Roy Smack models from Gibson and Harmony. I owned an H-73 "Roy Smeck" in the sixties and sold it for more than I paid for it in the seventies. Great guitar with solid construction and a unique tone. The Roy Smeck "autograph" was metal not painted on. In general this was a finer made guitar than the other "Rocket" Hamonys. One in perfect condition is worth $600 to $800 now. I wish I still had mine.

In 1966 I owned a "Chinese Red" Harmony as described with white inlaid edging, a white elevated pick guard, toggle switch on upper left body, the no name vibrato bar, and "Roy Smeck" insignia. It played beautifully, had great action, preferred flat wound strings and a great but unusual tone. "Roy Smeck" autograph models were common at Harmony and were placed upon ukeleles, mandolins, guitars without much distinction. This guitar I believe is a relative to the "Rocket" models. I wish I still had mine. I sold it in 1968 and saw it again being played on stage in the mid-seventies.

I’ve recently bought a Gibson ES150 which is ‘cosmetically challenged’. I’d like to restore it to its former glory (it’s already had a bad respray at some point in the past), but will a strip down and respray change its tone? I don’t want to lose its great sound.

I bought a cd about 10 years ago by a pair of German acoustic artists named Manfred Christl Farnbach and Oliver Spieb. The disc is entitled "Bilder" and it is heartstopping! I have turned the Web upside down trying to find more music by these guys, with no luck. Has anyone heard of these artists, and if so, where can I find some more of their music? Thanks! Dag

okay..there are several ways to look at this..
one..you could go by record sales..or awards won..
      or..draw in’s on concerts..
      or most influentual…
well its not going to be papa roach..honestly they dont have a new sound..(not to disrespect them) but they dont. and nor does limp bizkit. greenday would be close..but what have they done really…good tour but thats it. now i love Creed..but still i wouldnt pick them..because they didnt do much this year besides win every award a band can win….but still not best of the year material..the best of the year should be the beatles..for the simple fact…that they got an album to number one and they are no longer a band anymore..
that simple…never been done..NEVER..and i dont think any of the bands today…( not even my beloved creed) could do that…so in all fareness…BEATLES….
and it doesnt mean you have to like them…
just give credit due when it is due…

It’s not something that most people should attempt, but with the proper glue (epoxy) it’s not that hard. If I were fixing someone’s guitar and only had to do the glue job and restring it…i.e. not any finish work, I’d probably charge no more than about $50 – $75. : my head stock broke. on my accoustic : I TOOK it in to a pro to fix it he told me how… : NOW…how easy do you all think it would be..??

Brad You’ve gotten enough advice already, but I actually have a question for Rog. Why the wash fluid in the water ? I applied a clear mylar guard on an older acoustic and just took care by starting at one end, making sure the guard went on flat – peeling the backing off as I proceeded. Any small bubbles were pinched out by rubbing with a soft cloth. The starting position is the key !! Wrong spot or angle and…well…a funky pickguard. All three nylon strings will go out of tune in 10 to 15 minutes. Is this normal, or am I doing something wrong? I do not expect high quality of that set-up, but I should not spend more time tuning than my kid learning to play. Thanks for advise, Jerry.

i bought a new guitar and i don’t know what pickups to put in the guitar. i play rock and metal so a dirty sound is important, but i still want the cleanest possible sound. i thought of emg’s because all the metalheads use them, but are they going to overdrive the clean channel of my amp (marshall valvestate 100watt head & 4×12). I also want coil taps, because they are my main clean sound (with a little chorus & reverb). what do you think?

I was wondering if someone could please tell me, hopefully by email, if the aqua marine metallic colour of the Fender American Series is a deep blue colour or a sort of nasty light turquoise (pale green)? I’m buying my guitar mail order to save some cash and I want to make sure it’ll look ok. I’ve seen pictures of the same guitar ranging from light green to royal blue. Any advice would be much appreciated. [email protected]

I ask, why tab? it’s absolutely unable to transfer the music between the guitarists. If i want to get notes/scores from the net, i don’t find it. why don’t we scan in some notes/scores, and then upload them to the server as an image file? I HATE TABs!

      Forget boxes, scale theory etc
They will only limit you. What you need is to develop pitch.
Here’s what I think you should do to free yourself from all these ‘laws’:
Close your eyes and put your hands on the neck and feel your way to the notes you want to hear. It’s hard as hell at first but in the long run you’ll learn NOT TO THINK while playing.
People have made theory out of miles davies playing, but it’s a fact that he left a lot of mistakes simply because those ‘wrong’ notes sounded great.

It sounds like what you’re seeing is along the seams of the peghead. Gibson pegheads usually have extra wood glued to either side of them to increase the width.

The way to tell if it’s a real concern is to see if you flex the headstock the crack grows or not… if it seems to get bigger, then it’s a crack in the wood, if it stays the same, it’s a crack in the finish. If it’s just in the finish it’s only cosmetic, but if the peghead itself is cracked it can have consequences.

      : Bill,
: The cracks are like at the top of the head on the back one on the left, running top to bottom, and one on the right and only visible from the back. They extend to just right about the two tuners on top on the left and right. I really love this guitar and hope that they are just wood slits, and nothing more to worry about. Thanks for your input.

: : : I recently purchased a new sg and got it at a much discounted price for the fact of a cosmetic flaw so to speak. I examined it under the light and saw two thin cracks about a inch long that looked repainted on the headstock. Is there any concern of tone being affected. I mean I have time to send it back but it was sold at quite a discount. I can live with cosmetic flaws as long as they pose no danger to the sound. Thanks for any reply.

      1. I just recieved a fender strat with the stock fender locking tremelo (floyd rose style). I want to put a standard fender tremelo and lose the locking nut stuff. How difficult is this to modify? 2. Will I have to drill or have unsightly holes in the body of the guitar? 3. I also wish to replace the pick-ups. What kind of current single coil pickups have a rich full tone. I want to avoid humbuckers with this guitar. 4. I would like to purchase them as a whole pick-guard assembly with an emerald green tortious shell pickguard, all the electronics and black plastic cosmetics so I can just drop it in. Is it possible to purchase the complete assembly like this or will I have to build it? Open to all suggestions, thanks for your time. -johnny

I have a new guitar (Ibanez Sca220) and I bought it with the intention of swapping out the nut, tuner and finally pick-ups. I want to put in EMG’s because of all the advances in technology theve have made (no noise, high output, ceramic bar instaed of posts, etc.) but are they gonna push the amp to a point where the cleans are gonna break up? I also listen to metallica and I like their sounds and thought that was another reason to get them. By the way, I’m getting humbucker style pickups with coil taps, regardless of the brand.(I need single and dual coil sounds) What’s your opinion? Thanx

Well I would suggest that if he likes older metallica that you might wanna get him a "rickenbacker 4003" those are rather expensive though they run around ,500. That is the bass that Cliff used. He used a big muff distortion and a morley wah pedal to get the tone he used. Newstead used the same effects. I’m not sure what bass he uses or used but i hope this helps some, A really nice bass is a ernie ball music man stringray 4-string or 5-string, both great basses, those in the ,000’s, if you want a good bass for cheap i would say a spector those are about 00 or so.

I agree. POD may have more distortion models but J Station has more variety and far better clean sounds like the Fender Twin Reverb & Twead.

      : Hi evryone…..

: I have a J-Station and that is te best…. You can not undersand that from this Black Box comes so much good sound and a lot of FUN….

      : I have a RP100 and I tryed some POD’S…..

: Don’t go RED Please… this Red thing is like a SUMMER love… you like it the first two days and then you have to go for something else!!!!

: The J-Station is much more controlable and has more REAL Amp sound the POD Line6 sound good but it’s to much noise that you don’t need… and in there try to make it better they made something that is far from a real Amp sound…

: You may like it but it’s not real amp sound….

right people, this is a discussion that doesn’t take anywhere!i’m lucky to have both pod a j-station,and true…the pod does better on high gain and modern amps and the j-station does better on clean and vimtage amps, and if you go to their respective websites they both say this!!! now i love these things, but never ever has anything come close to the real tube amp!!! the response, the sound…everything. these tools are made for direct recording!!!and offer an acceptable "ALTERNATIVE" for the real amps on stage! bottom line:if you want to record with good sounds on a budget pod and j-station are the answer………………want a good sound live, well save up some money and buy the real thing!!!!!!!

I can’t stay local. I live in a tiny town with only 1 music shop, and everything is over priced at that store, thats why I looked on the internet. In my little tiny town, their is a yard sale about once every 6 months, and when their is, I can’t find any guitars, this town seems to be stuck on trumpets. the closest thing to a swap meet in this town is 2 stores in the same parking lot. I am pretty much stuck with the internet. I look in the paper for a guitar and I find one about every month and those are about 300 dollars, and everytime its the same ad, and it says "needs work". I even built a web site to earn money so I can buy a descent guitar (www.twistedsite.f2s.com) but it doesnt get much traffic. I am stuck with the internet…

I would suggest that weather you have a double locking or single locking tremelo you shoudl have it balanced once a year. Take it to your nearest guitar store, just make sure they are good at what they do. And ask them to balance it for ya. Hope this advice helps.

I would recomend that you get a strat with 3 single coil pickups because they give you more of a blues jazzy sound. If you use a humbucker it will give you a more heavy rock sound. You can still get one with a humbucker but set the selector switch so only the two single coil pickups pickup the sound. So than you will have a guitar for jazz and rock. That is if you want a fender. For the best blues/jaz sound i would recommend a Gibson es-335, But those are pretty pricey. Hope this helps.

I would suggest that you put some pentatonic licks in there and mix them with arpeggios. Lately in kirks solos he has used alot of pentatonics expecially in the load/reload albums. Also when soloing use your pinky alot. Use it to hit some high notes and bends. Hope this helps.

: I have been looking all over the internet for a cheap guitar. I was looking for a cheap acoustic to learn on, then I figured whats the point, I’ll just have to buy an electric after I learn on that one, so I went to find a cheap electric guitar. The cheapest electric I have found is at MusicYo, 69.99, then I remembered I have to get an amp, most of them cost more then the guitar, I know I can find a cheap one for around 30 bucks if I looked hard. So i thought I would buy the 69 dollar one and find an amp. Then it said I needed a strap, I thought that would only be about 2 bucks, it ended up to be 12, whats the point, I can just buy a gig bag for 10 bucks and tear the strap off that. Then, adding to the price, I have to get a gig bag. All in all it would cost me, 69 for the guitar, 30 for an amp, 12 for a strap, 10 for the gig bag, adds up to around 122 dollars. Then their is shipping charges, around 150 in the end for a simple "inexpensive" guitar, yeah right, there is no way Im going to pay 150 dollars on a guitar thats not even that great. So I thought I’ll just have to settle with acoustic, and I found a nice and cheap one at musicians friend for 29.99, I thought that was good, and since I didnt have to buy an amp I could afford it. Then, again, it said I needed a strap, another 12 bucks, then a bag thing, only this time I needed a hard one because acoustics are more fragile, 70 dollars, then picks, 10 bucks for 8, can’t I just buy one for a buck, nope, you have to buy all of them. I know these are good prices when put with the other ones, but whether they are good prices or not, they are still TOO EXPENSIVE. Most guitars are in the thousands, because they are a certain brand, or once played by a famous person, or they are rare. I dont care who played it, or how many they made. If somebody famous played it, does that make my guitar sound any better, or me sound any better. I dont care how the guitar looks or if they are "collectors items" I just want a guitar, it doesnt even have to sound too great, I just want it to sound like a guitar. Everywhere I look it says I need all these accessories, tuners, etc. I know I dont need a tuner, I dont even know what they do. Most of these accessories I’ve never heard of, but I "have to have it" to play a guitar. Are these accessories really neccasary, and can find the neccasary accessories cheaper from some other site? Please respond.

tOO EXPENSIVE IS SUCH A RELATIVE TERM. I HAVE FOUND THAT MOST PEOPLE WHO BALK AT PAYING 00.00 OR MORE FOR A GUITAR WONT BAT AN EYE AT DROPPING A COUPLE OF GRAND FOR A DECENT SET OF GOLF CLUBS. AS WITH ANYTHING A GUITAR WILL HAVE ITS ACESSORIES THE DIFFERENCE IS THAT ONCE YOU ARE SET UP tHAT’S IT, YOU CAN SPEND THE REST OF YOUR TIME EJOYING YOUR AXE AND LEARNING NEW STUFF WILL COST YOU PENNYS AND A LITTLE TIME AND EFFORT. BEST OF ALL THE MUSIC YOU PLAY WILL BECOME THE MUSIC YOU ENJOY AND BTW A GOOD GUITAR IS AN INVESTMENT! JUST ASK THE FELLA WHO HAS A PRE=CBS FENDER OR AN ORIGINAL FLAMETOP LES PAUL. I PAID ,800.00 FOR A NEW MARTIN IN 89, PLAYED THE HELL OUT OF IT FOR A DECADE AND SOLD IT TO A MUSIC STORE FOR JUST UNDER 2K. TRY GETTING YOUR MONEY BACK ON THOSE GOLF CLUBS……ARE WE GETTING IT?
AS ONE OF YOUR RESPONDENTS WISELY WROTE: "A GOOD AXE WILL INSPIRE YOU TO PLAY" AND GUESS WHAT? YOU CAN GET A SEAGULL FOR UNDER 00.OO, FINE LITTLE AXE FOR THE MONEY. ANYWAY SORRY FOR THE BOOK REPORT BUT YOU SHOULD READJUST YOU PRIORITIES PRIOR TO YOUR GUITAR PURCHASE.

: I have learned all the boxes or positions in the minor and major keys except when I solo, I am still confined to the boxes and feel that I just jump from box to box instead of smoothly incorperating one to the next. Are there any exercises that I can do to make it look as though I am playing around the neck smoothly without it looking like I am useing box forms? Are there any bridging exercises?

Evening, You say you can play the box forms of scales in both major and minor keys. The trick is now to play these scales throughout the neck. Here is something to think about. Lets just use the 5th fret on the E-string. Play the major scale of ‘A’ in that position.
Now there are 6 different places (standard size neck)
in which to play this ‘A’ major scale. Find the starting point of where the ‘A’ major scale begins and ends in these positions. In other words start thinking side to side motions instead of up and down motions.
The more you work through playing these scales this way the more fluent (sorry spelling) you will become in playing throughtout the neck. This way to you will be able to play anywhere without thinking about where your fingers have to be for the next motion. I’m telling you though, start slow and work into it. The speed will come with time and some will the motion. It will get to a point that you will hear something and be able to play it without guessing. Take Care Hope this helps some.. PEACE R.D.

I live in a rural area and have been trying to learn guitar for the past couple of years. I have picked up quite a bit but have found that I really benefit from having a teacher. The problem that I face is finding someone that gives lessons. Most instructors that I have been able to find live 75-80 miles away. Most players who live in the area either don’t hang around too long or aren’t qualified teachers. Moving is not an option due to family and present job obligations. Can anyone recommend any videos or books that have proven to be successful? Any advice would be welcome. Thanks!

      Hi,

It depends what type of tone you are looking for. The Duncans are good pickups but are hotter than your average pickup. The hotrail and duckbucker are also humbucking pickups that fit in a single coil space.
If you want the traditional Strat sound you may want to put actual single coil pickups. If you want a hotter more modern sound stick with the Duncans.

      Hi,

The first thing I would do is change the pickups. Generally in cheaper guitars the pickups are of very poor quality and the Squire is no exception.
This will cost ya about 50 for the pickups and the installation. You can save yourself about 5 of that if you buy used pickups and install them yourself.
Other mods people will do on their Squires are:
Replace tuners, the bridge, and the pots(volume and tone) with just higher grade stuff.

      Hope this helps.

Most of the sites I found you have to pay for them… but I know I didn’t ever download any fonts, so where did they all come from, and where is a few good sites where I can download some…? Install it and go to those sites again. Pick a font and download it. Most of the sites have instructions on how to install the fonts. That is all

Don’t let anybody shoot down your rig.As long as you get a sound you want, play it. I have seen alot of great players with Squires/Epiphones/Danelectros/Kays,etc. because they don’t want to ( or can’t afford to ) alter a "real" Fender. Make sure you have the action set up for your style, if you don’t know much about that, read a little in Guitar Mag’s. Ask your local techs. Do a little experimenting with the height of your strings and position of your pickups. Then, look into different kinds of strings, they make a big difference in your sound, (gage, make of string)A cool strat mod is the addition of a fat Gibson style humbucker. You’ll need help with the set-up of that, but it really gives you alot more options in your sound. Play it hard! The guy that told you to get rid of your guitar is a dick.

The first thing I’d do is trade that guitar for anything with a humbucker! You realy shouldent bother changeing your guitar. I’m not just being an ass, it’s just that your guitar plus the money you would spend upgradeing you could buy a better guitar.(seriosly) If you like the guitar and dont want to get rid of it I would get on ebay and find some cheap used dimarzios or semore duncan pickups. A roller nut new bridge and tuners will improve the tuneing and sound greatly. If you want a cheaper fix for the bridge you can get string saver saddles insted of replaceing the whole thing. I know alot about guitars and if you have more detailed questions I would love to help just e-mail me at [email protected]. Hope I helped

        1. Pickups: Changing pickups will change the tone of the amplified guitar. I’m guessing you play rock, so I’m saying a Seymour Duncan JB, Seymour Duncan Invader, Dimarzio Super Distortion or a Seymour Duncan Distortion. There are many more types of pickups, check http://www.seymourduncan.com for more info. If you look around on the internet, you should be able to find some good pickups for around $40-$80. 2. Tuners: These are the most underrated part of a guitar. The keep the guitar in tune, and on most cheaper guitars, they don’t work so good. If tuning is a problem, better tuners would be wise. http://www.stewmac.com carries a large selection of tuners from most of the best makers. About $25-$70 3. Saddles: These things are the little metal things that hold the strings up at the bridge(where the strings go through the body) try http://www.stewmac.com about $10-$20 : I have a fender squire electric guitar (pretty cheap I know) and a pro 185 fender amp, I have only been playing the electric for about 4 months and was hoping someone could explain some modifications that could improve the quality of the guitar…… any help will be greatly apprectiated. : Thanks

It depends. Electrics are easier to play (generally speaking) because strings are lighter and the necks are usually thinner for electrics. However, I would actually recommend starting out on an acoustic. Reason being, the strings are thicker, so you are better working the muscles needed to build up speed and control. Also, when you finally switch over to an electric, it will feel a lot better than starting on an electric and then picking up an acoustic, and you will more than likely end up a more "solid" player. So anyway, that’s my 2 cents. Good Luck!

well actually Tray, I think the reason your bridge got all messed up was because it was a single locking trem.
The double lockin trems dont really do that, because as you may have figured; They lock at the bridge too 😛
I have a single locker and, yes, it does what you describe but my double locker stays in tune pretty good…sometimes goes a little flat, but thats not too big an issue.
      Take it easy Tray,

Depending on what kind of shape it’s in, it’s possibly worth even more. A thing to note, if it has a good neck, plays well and has a nice sound, I would keep it if I were you. The new Gibsons are crappy compared to the old ones, especially the ones made up to about 1968 or so. They made the best sounding flattops I’ve ever heard back then…better sounding than any Martin I’ve ever played.

I have bought a second hand USA Standard Strat fitted with a Seymour Duncan JB at bridge, SD Duckbucker at neck and SD Hot Rails in middle position.
I would like some opinions as to whether this is the best combination and whether I should swap them about, or use one or more in another Strat that I have which is fitted with standard pickups(Fender Japan circa 1982. I would be prepared to buy additional pickups for the Japanese Strat to go with the SD ones if worthwhile. What do you think ?

I’ve found the best place to put it is somewhere from 2 to 8 inches in front of the fingerboard…right next to the soundhole, but not directly in front of it…otherwise it’ll sound boomy.

I have a J-Station and that is te best…. You can not undersand that from this Black Box comes so much good sound and a lot of FUN….

      I have a RP100 and I tryed some POD’S…..

Don’t go RED Please… this Red thing is like a SUMMER love… you like it the first two days and then you have to go for something else!!!!

The J-Station is much more controlable and has more REAL Amp sound the POD Line6 sound good but it’s to much noise that you don’t need… and in there try to make it better they made something that is far from a real Amp sound…

You may like it but it’s not real amp sound….

YOU CAN PLACE ANOTHER MIC ON MIDDLE OF NECK KEEP EQ FLAT WHEN RECORDING AMD EQ DURING MIXDOWN. TRY USING AKG 451 MICS-THEY;RE AWESOME.

No.Standard(mounted)guitar pickups are designed to pick-up string vibration. The pick-ups that you’ll need are scensor-type things.Barcus Berry and a couple of other people make these. They’re built differently. The higher end Parker Fly models have scensor pick-ups built into the bridge.Lovely sound!Scensor pick-ups will probably work better.

I heard that the direct mounted pickups sound better than pickups mounted with the rectangular rings because they (direct mounted) are mounted directly to the wood, allowing the pickup and the wood to resonate together, whereas the mounting rings reduce the tone of the wood because the pickup is conected to the spring to allow for pickup height adjustment. Someone told me that by putting blocks under the pickup and conecting the pickup directly to the body, it acts as a directly mounted pickup and give you the better resonance. Does anyone know anything about this, it would be nice. Thanks in advance.

Hello all guitar players. This message pertains to users of Floyd Rose and lisenced Floyd Rose tremolos.
I have an Ibanez RG (lower quality) with a lisenced Floyd Rose single locking trem on it and I have a concern to which I would like addressed.
I have heard that on the lisenced versions of this trem, the point where the base plate contacts the screws, the plate wears down over time, leaving it dull and flat, allowing the trem to sit in a different position and consequently putting the guitar out of tune.
I wanted to test this on my guitar, so I made sure the guitar was in tune and that the trem was parallel to the body of the guitar. After what I believe to be some pretty modest use of the whammy bar, I noticed that the trem was not sitting parallel and the guitar was not in tune. (the theory was correct)
My question to all you is whether or not your trems do the same. I have had plans on upgrading to an ESP M-II or Prestige model Ibanez and this is something I want to clear up as it greatly affects my decision in buying a guitar with a Floyd Rose. I want to know if some of the other lisenced Floyd Rose trems are okay or whether I have to buy a Floyd Rose Original for a couple hundred bucks when I invest this much money in a guitar.
      Thanks

Back in the day,Strats and Teles were used a lot.But any guitar can be used for funk. The trick is tweaking your amp to get the bright, clear sounds needed.Glenn Goines(Parliament)used a Gibson L6-S and SG’s.While Gary Shider was known for using Stratocasters.Tweaking is the key.

      Dear twisted:
I found a guitar manufacturer from India(on this very sight) who was marketing very cheap stratocasters. Their pitch is that they don’t have to pay a lot of labor. They may be good. I have found a few good guitars at yard sales, and fixed them up, for under a hundred dollars, but you really have to work to find them. I’ve been teaching for over twenty-five years now, and the best cheap guitar would probably be an ancient used Yamaha. Better yet, save up your money and get a Seagull for under 00.00. A good guitar will inspire your playing by being easy to play and pleasant sounding. I have a picture of this bush dude in Africa playing a homemade bass made out of a one gallon tin can. It was kind of cool. You never know, good guitars can be found cheap. I have bought two fenders for fifty bucks each, I just wish that I could do that every day.

I don’t want do disappoint you, but you forgot the guitar cable, to hook your guitar up to your amp!
It’ll probably cost you another fortune.
      Don’t you feel kinda foolish?
The old blues guys had nothing. The managed to get themselves a guitar and learned to play.
No money, no tuner, no picks, no new strings..
Try selling your computer and buy a guitar, or just stay of it at all.

      Herman Hup (The Netherlands)

      Hi,
The way a pickup works is the strings pasas through the pickups magnetic field and is converted to electric current. The passive pick up stops there.
The word active, in electronics, is something that amplifies. An active pickup actually amplifies the signal by sending it through a preamp. That is what the battery is for.
There is much debate on which sounds better. Try em both out and decide.

      Hope this helps.

Los Angeles, — Screamingfingers.com, an online Music store and distribution portal for musicians today announced its
establishment of a new E-Book MSP (marketplace service provider) for unpublished music authors. Music authors who
have been unsuccessful in obtaining book-publishing deals now have a new resource for digital publication and
      distribution.

“E-Books are the perfect vehicle for authors to distribute their work not only in the United States, but internationally in
less than the click of a mouse, said David Schroeder, the companys’ CEO. “Plus”, Schroeder Stated, “All the
conventional costs such as printing, binding, postage and handeling are eliminated! Traditionally, if you were not lucky
enough to be published by one of the major publishing houses you either remained unpublished or traveled down the
self-publishing road, utilizing a vanity press, which was an expensive process”.

Schroeder added, “We don’t care who you are, if you have a music manuscript that you want published, not only will
we publish it online, we’ll give you an open market place to sell it as well. The final judge will be the consumer, not the
editor.” Recent experiments by authors who publish and market their own work online have shown excellent financial
      returns.

Screamingfingers.com E-Book releases also have an interactive community feature built into the digitally produced
publications. Consumers can offer comments, new ideas, or ask for help on difficult sections of the instructional

Consumers can offer comments, new ideas, or ask for help on difficult sections of the instructional
materials, allowing the new author to communicate with his audience and to build a following for new and future
      releases.

I have posted this message before.. does anyone know of such a method?
What about schools who do not have a regular music teacher but the students would like to learn to play the guitar individually and in a guitar band?

So i thought I would buy the 69 dollar one and find an amp.

To get the best bang for your buck, stay local! The internet can yield some fabulous bargains, but only if you have tons of knowledge. I’ve been playing guitar for almost 30 years and I won’t buy anything on the internet.

I use local music stores because of one reason – I can try the stuff and return it if it isn’t right. And they sell picks for LOTS less than a buck or more – more like a quarter if you buy five or more. Also, many music shops have guitar repairmen that will set up a guitar at no charge if you buy it at their store.

If a music store carries used stuff, they will get in good guitars at inexpensive prices. The trick is to be ready when they show up. The only way to do that is to play enough guitars to know how a good one feels. So try out some of the more expensive ones and get a feel for a good neck.

You might also watch, if you don’t mind going there, local pawnshops. A lot of them overcharge for cheap guitars, but some don’t. And if you’re willing to dicker you can get some pretty good things.

For cheap guitars check out Washburn. Like the D-10 acoustic. They’re decent and I’ve seem them for around 00. Also the Washburn, Aria, or Hamer Slammer electrics. I suspect most of these are made by Samick – another brand to check out. For a cheap amp a Peavey Rage 158 sounds great and can be had for under 00. And you can’t get it on the Internet!

My electric is an old Washburn WS-4 Strat knockoff whic sounds fabulous. I paid 10 for it and haven’t considered anything else. Of course I played over a dozen of them before I picked this one.

So- patience is the key to sucess here. Good luck!

Hey. I’m looking for a guitar amp and I stumbled across a ’75 Fender Bassman with all of it’s original parts(aside from the tubes). The guy is asking a cheap price for it. I would like to know if it would be good for my style ( I play from light rock to the heaviest of metals).
I would be using a guitar through it because it has small voice coils, and it is supposed to sound better with guitar.

Are you offering one or planning to build one commercially? I would be interested. Midi Solutions do a box for US$129 but that has no pedal – you just plug in a volume pedal. For what it involves I would pay about $25- otherwise I would build one.

I have a gibson SG guitar and I try very hard to play clean sounds as they are used in Funkmusik.
Do you have an idea which guitars are more suitable for this type of music?

First, a humbucker looks like two single coil pickups wrapped together. Essentially, that is what it is. The pickups are wound in opposite directions to prevent the hum that is so common in single coil pickups. These are mainly used in rock guitar because of the thick, warm tones they produce. Sometimes you will see a guitar with one or two humbuckers (or single coils). If there is just one it is generally in the bridge position to give a bright, high output tone. When there is two. One is in the bridge position and one in the neck position. The neck pickup gives a smooth, warm, kind of mellow tone used mostly in jazz and blues. These also function well as rhythm pickups. Pickups are what turns the vibration of the strings into sound. The pickups are basically magnets with copper wire wrapped around them. When a string is plucked, the magnets pick up the vibration of the string and then send the signal to the amp and then the amp boosts the signal into audible levels. As for your acoustic-electric question, generally true acoustics are hollow body not semi-hollow. There are those that are though. They can be played as acoustic but they won’t have near as much volume or tone as a hollow. The body is not on solid block of wood, rather, it contains hollow chambers to produce the natural acoustic tones. They ar plugged in to get the amplified acoustic-electric tones. I hope this makes sense to you since you say you don’t know anything about electrics. As far as the mini humbucker goes, it is a humbucking pickup that is the size of a single coil pickup. Alot of people replace the single coil bridge pickup in Strat-style guitars (generally cut for three single coils) with mini humbuckers to give the guitar a beefier sound without having to modify the pickup holes. I hope this isn’t too confusing for you and I hope I’ve been able to help a little.

The difference is quite simple. A passive humbucker is what most guitars contain. The tone knob only brings out the treble when turned up, that is all it does. If you notice when you turn the tone all the way down it kind of muddies up. An active humbucker has a battery to accompany it. This provides the tone controls to either boost or cut frequencies. If you turn the tone knob up it boosts the treble frequencies. When you turn it down you gradually cut the frequencies and when you turn it all the way down some of the frequencies are completely cut out. Sometimes active systems can create some noise in you system and the batteries tend to not last very long but they can be useful. I hope this helps a little.

I would suggest a plain ol’ American Standard Strat. You could pick one of those up for around 50. I don’t recommend any of the "modified" strats, the relics are nice but the Standard will hold it’s value much longer than the others. Plus, when you play a Standard you are playing what is pretty close to the original ’54 Strats. If you’re gonna play a Strat why not play the real thing. Anyway, that is my view. I have two American Standards and I wouldn’t trade them for any Plus, Deluxe, Custom, or Relic. I swear by them! With the money you have left over you could buy a really cool Fender Tweed case to put that wonderful Strat in. Just a suggestion. I hope this helps and have fun shopping!!!

Be very careful and measure the length from nut to saddle exactly, you will need to remove a consderable amount of wood from the fretboard and if you put the nut in the wrong place you can screw the intonation for good. Measure, mark, then cut carefully and exactly.

What the other individuals have brought to the table is very good. I would take the manufacturer’s information on placement and devide it by three. Only remove about 2/3 thirds of the wood they say to remove. Then widdle and place the nut until the intonation is correct. This will make a crappy guitar that much better. By the way set the intonation as correctly as possible BEFORE doing any handy-work. The theory is that the instrument sounds realitvly good as is and needs minor adjutment. As with the other posts, DO NOT HURRY THE PROCESS, you should take baby steps in making any instrument sound good. You can’t build a "Strovarious" in a minute, but a shit-pile in a second! BEST OF LUCK!!!!! YOU KNOW MY EMAIL

: having trouble picking a tube amp need to know which is beter all round a peavey classic 50 or the fender hot rod deville 4-10s in each?

You should go by sound of the amp, changing the tubes helps alot but it won’t bring s*&t to life. Both are good sounding amps. Neither is excellent unless you find the right one. Do not buy the cheapest amp unless you listen to it and it sounds better or the amp will sound like the cheapest amp. NOS tubes are cool but the speaker and you will have more to do with the sound of the amp than the tubes.

Dear lord man you want something to sound fatter than a les paul. I think you need to check your pickups. A good pickup in a les paul with a decent that is all set up right should offer the fattest sound rock guitar has heard. Your techniique has a great deal to do with it. Also, getting rid of the maple (i.e. an all mohagany guitar) will offer a thicker sound.

: : Does anyone know a free guitar site which will teach me how to play faster lead guitar, and different scales.

: : Presently I only ever play major and minor pentatonic.
: : I want to exactly what scales etc to use in different songs.

      : : Cheers

You should buy a book. There are enough scales that having the book will help. after you have the book and you start looking at it you could try… http://www.zentao.com/guitar/theory/ this site is loaded as is guitarmain.com but you will need to do lot’s of work on your own to get anyway on this instrument. Start really REALLY slow. Think melodically before you try to sound fast. content is much more important than speed. Listen to all the Al Dimiola that and John McLaughlin that you can. Vai and Satch aren’t bad either.

Could somebody give me a little info on this guitar? This is why I am a piano player. But please somebody help me!!!

      Okay,
Bring this thing into a worthwhile music store and have them look at it. If the head doesn’t say gibson it probably isn’t one. But to be sure (some gibson had painted on logos) go to a place with intelligent, i.e. not sam ash, and ask their "best guitar guy".

: Iwant to learn to play fills inbetween lyrics during a song, any ideas you have would be greatly appreciated

      Jim,
I would suggest, if you know your chords and scales well enough, that you simply sing to yourself the type of fill that is in your head. Once you have the idea clear you can proceed to to apply it to the song and the guitar. I typically had only a few fills to a song to keep notes from getting crowded. Be sure that what you plays sounds right (don’t be entirley concerned with the theory BE HARMONICALLY FREE!) Hendrix, clapton, Allman Brothers.. are all good sources of the ypes of licks that I think of as fills.

I currently play the acoustic, and I’m looking to go into electric, but I absoulutly know nothing about them. First off, what is a humbucker? What’s the difference between having 1 or 2? What are pick ups. I saw this guitar online that says it’s a semi-hollow-body acoustic-electric. Does that mean that you can play it like an acoustic, but can also play it as a electric? It also says it has a mini humbucker, what’s the difference between a mini and a regular??? Thanks

Phil B. is right on, don’t waste what money you have on a 9 or 9 guitar, also you can buy an electric and start learning without an amp, plug it into your PC or stero, or whatever. PC tuners are free, or you can use a dialtone to tune from, or find a tuning fork at flea market, etc… as to a strap, sure you could come up with something to make one yourself, picks are cheap (not a buck apiece… for cheap ones, and you can ‘make’ your own too), also you don’t need a gig bag or case to play, just take a little extra care when transporting it. So just be a little creative, focus on getting the best guitar you can afford, and you’ll work out the ‘details’ as you go along.

I’ve been using Line 6 for awhile and have grown to like them alot… and don’t care what all the tube fanatics say… they sound great (I think), and are very versitle (I don’t have to lug the effects board and other amps around anymore, just 1), but as always just try all you can and decide what suits you.

: What are some good brands when it comes to amps?

I was wondering if anyone could give me some good, sound advice about purchasing a Strat. If I want to spend around 000, not any higher, what is the best Strat. I can buy? I really would preferm a sunburst or Olympic White. I’m not sure what to get with all the re-issues and relics and such. THANKS!

if you have some friends that play they can point you in the right direction, and maybe loan you a guitar before you invest in one….but if you want the best bang for the buck in a NEW guitar the Taylor Big Baby is an awesome choice…..for around 50 I think……it has no pickups and doesnt even have bound edges but is still a nice looking guitar….but the real payoff is that you get that buttery, easy to play Taylor feel……..and it has great tone……and if you decide that you need a more high end one sometime in the future youll always still have that nice camp guitar as a backup

Does anybody have any suggestions for a good distortion pedal for under 0? Being primarily a blues player, I won’t be using distortion very much and thus I’m buying a cheap one only to fiddle around with.

I’m currently looking at Kramer DS-1 Distortion, Boss DS-1 Distortion, and Boss OS-1 Overdrive/Distortion. Are those any good? And any other suggestions? Thank you very much.

I’ll tell you truthfully. I just got the Line 6 Spider and i absolutely fell in love with it. it’s only 50 watts but if your in your room just messin around its a great amp for you. i had a Crate 2×12 Vintage Class tube amp and the Line 6 for the money was better for me. i play all sorts of stuff from metal to blues, so this is easy to work with. The crate did nothing for me. so get it if you havent already.

I have owned the acoustic 150 head for at least 12 years. It has never let me down. I am using a acoustic cabinet that houses 6-10" speakers in it. With this set up, I use a Rockman sustainor and chorus/delay units. The sound is incrediable. Very Very Loud. I would guess that the output is about 150 watts rms. If you need to really know, e-mail me and I’ll look on the back side of it. I have the early model 150. Probably made in the late 60’s.

I found one of these really cheap recently, and it came with a matching 2×12 cabinet (I know Acoustic also made a 1×15 cab), a configuration which sounds fantastic as a bass rig. I’m not sure how much power it delivers, but I had a solid-state 2×10 Ampeg rated at 200W, and the Acoustic seems to be MUCH louder than the Ampeg was! You should be able to find a schematic pretty easy on the internet. Tim

I have on it’s the 210. I use all the settings except for the "Insane" setting. Well when I want some primal scream therapy I play with that setting. If you want a good variety of sound & tone, without tons of gear this amp rocks! I love mine, but it won’t be my "Pride & Joy" amp, but I will never get rid of it. It all boils down to the fact that I can go and jam with tons of sounds and now carry tons of gear. Free Advice: GET ATLEAST THE 210, THE 112 SOUNDS BAD. 2 Speakers will make all the difference. I have had mine for 3 months I love it. Been playing for 7 years.

: I was recently given a beautiful Ibanez acoustic/electric 12 string guitar. How do I tune it properly?
just send it to me and I’ll tune it. (probably won’t send it back though!)
you’re a lucky bugger having one of those given to you!
I’ve fancied a 12 for years, but haven’t had an excuse to get one because I can add chorus to my strat and get the same sound through the amp, but I really fancy an electro-acoustic 12 with a cut-away body. It would be magic for folksy stuff, but it can wait until after I treat myself to an electric violin, hopefully before the end of the year.

As a straight up collectible, it’s not worth much, as it’s been modified. However, actual PAF humbuckers are worth a lot of money individually (somewhere around 00 each if I remember right), and if indeed the guitar was owned by Peter Green it could be worth a lot of money from the celebrity aspect. You’d have to have very good documentation to prove he owned it though.

It maybe belonged to Peter Green in the early 70s.. He used a Les Paul Goldtop (with P90s) when he played on B.B King’s "In London".. The other Fleetwood Mac guitarist, Danny Kirwan, used a Les Paul Goldtop more exclusive.. it’s maybe his old? : As a straight up collectible, it’s not worth much, as it’s been modified. You could use a pedal on the overdrive channel but that will get you more feedback than you asked for. As far as I know you’d best buy a pretty decent pedal and use that on the clean channel only. Always works best. Anyhoe, you do not necessarily need a huge wall of distortion to make for a cool punk guitar…. Or do you? Sounds OK on LP/CD but live it will get lost in the overall sound. Try some early HC bands for cool guitar sounds. Good luck.

      <b>Standard open-string tunings

Twelve-string guitars are tuned to the same standard pattern [of a six-string guitar]. However, they are sometimes set a tone lower [slightly detuning one of the strings of some/all of the pairs, i think is what it means], and the tuning of each pair of strings varies. The 1st and 2nd strings [pairs] are tuned in "unison", giving identical notes of the same pitch; the other four pairs are each tuned to give the same notes but an octave apart.

Of course, this standard tuning is not the only way a guitar can be tuned. There are many variations and alternatives which might be better suited to a particular tune or style, or which might be used to create a specific sort of "sound".

The Guitar Handbook – Ralph Denyer</b>

      1st strings = E+E (same octave)
      2nd strings = B+B (same octave)
      3rd strings = G+G (one octave apart)
      4th strings = D+D (one octave apart)
      5th strings = A+A (one octave apart)
      6th strings = E+E (one octave apart)

for pairs 3 through 6, one string should be much thinner than the other ‘standard’ string (as of a six-string guitar). the thinner one.. the book doesn’t really say, but most likely, that is the one that should be an octave difference.. a higher octave most likely.

i don’t own a 12-string guitar.. nor have ever tuned one.. so, i just quoted this from a book.

      i hope this helps

Can anybody help me out with what good pedals to use or what tubes to replace with? i tried using a r2du RAT rackmount but its hella noisy and sounds ugly. the metal zone sucks also and was wondering if its good to use a distorion pedal on the dirty chanel? dude- you’re used to listening to artificially-clipped transistor type distortion. don’t say you "really love the tone of the JCM 800 and the distortion is awesome" when what you really mean is " i look cool with a Marshall, but i don’t like the sound". use a pedal for that crisp thick crunch, and set your amp clean. i have a Korg 2-program distortion pedal that i think is fantastic. when you input a pedal-clipped signal into a tube gain channel it just doesn’t really work. what i say is sell the JCM 800 to someone who can dig it and buy yourself a Peavy or Crate transistor with the big proceeds….but first put on "Back In Black" and tell me you don’t like your Marshall’s sound. you should be able to dial that sound in perfectly with the 800, even with a strat(thats my setup). remember, the poor craftsman blames his tools. many people underestimate the effect that technique can have on actual tone. a good guitar player adjusts his attack and touch when playing different guitars through different setups. listen hard to your sound, side by side with a record, and try to analyze the differences: amount of distortion, and midrange characteristics. one more thing:the first thing everyone says is "get humbuckers". when you are playing through a good distortion effect, it doesn’t matter how low the output of your pickups is. in fact, single coils can add more complex dimensions to the final distorted tone, and can sound better than humbuckers….

I generally prefer spring reverb for solos.Plate has a little too much ambiance and tends to "bleed" over. Hall reverb is cool, but it’s not "spacey" enough. It really depends on the feel of the tune.

An original Floyd is actually produced by Floyd Rose. They are more sought after and built nicer.
A licenced Floyd is produced by someone else(like ESP)with the permission from Floyd Rose. They pay for this right.
These are generally made in Asia and are not as desierable as the originals. They are pretty good, just not as good.

Dude, settle down a bit! If you were considering even looking at a 9 electric, forget about it. A 9 acoustic, forget about it. All you will get with those is a headache. They will never stay tuned, they will play terrible and you will grow to hate the guitar in general. Those are so cheaply made, they are nothing but crap! If you want to play the guitar, there are some expenses involved, no two ways about it. If you simply can’t afford to buy an electric guitar package or even a decent acoustic, try renting an acoustic from your local shop. They should be able to hook you up. As for all of the accessories, some kind of case is needed, if you rent it will come with a case. You need a pick if you are not learning fingerstyle, and as a beginner you won’t be. Those are like, a quarter or maybe a few cents more (certain kinds anyway. You really don’t need a strap unless you want to stand up and play. You can get a cheap strap for around 6 bucks. You will need a tuner at first until you can learn what each strings tuned pitch is. Those aren’t that expensive. But like I said earlier, there are some expenses involved at first. The question is, just how badly do you want to play the guitar? If you have to save for a few more months then that is what you have to do. I don’t mean to sound rude or too straightforward but, it’s the truth. I hope this helps a little in your decision. Good Luck!!

First of all, the $69 guitar everyone is automatically calling junk is, as you said, being sold by Music-Yo, which is related to Gibson. These guitars are now selling for a low of $74.95 plus S & H (cost me about $16 more). I bought one for my son to learn on. If you look around the internet, you will find reviews by owners (see http://www.harmonycentral.com reviews). The Musicyo site itself provides reviews. The guitar seems just fine. I read about guitar set-up and checked it out after it arrived and it was already set up pretty nicely. You can also purchase a decent practice amp from them for about $65. Both guitar and amp have the Kramer name. Personally, I looked around and picked up a Vox Pathfinder 15 watt practice amp after reading reviews. It cost $95 plus tax from Sam Ash Music store. The Kramer guitar by the way came with a free (otherwise only $2 strap). You can get a $20 gig bag there also. I do recommend an electronic guitar tuner but these can be had pretty cheap ($10-15 or so). I had bought one awhile ago to help tune a cheap acoustic I bought for around $75 from QVC. Picks I got for free at the Philly X-games and they are Fenders (nice collectibles with EXPN on them as well). The tuner allows you to plug in the guitar and automatically tells you which string you are playing and whether it is in tune or not (simply have to turn the tuning knob Clockwise or counterclockwise if the tuner lights light up as "Flat" or "Sharp" untilt the center "in tune" LED lights up. Very simple. Once you get it down, it takes about five minutes to get it in perfect tune. You can take any mail order guitar to a guitar store for a set-up (shouldn’t cost too much) and there are poor guitarists everywhere who may set it up for you dirt cheap or, at the least, tell you if you got a lemon. If you get a lemon, Music-Yo, I believe, will treat you fairly and you can get your money back within a certain period of time (I think it’s thirty days, but check with them to be sure). So your only risk is the S&H (which they will probably not charge you if you can convince them you got a lemon). I’ve had pretty good response from them eventhough it’s only through e-mail. They forgot to add the guitar strap to the guitar when I got it but sent it right away under separate cover when I e-mailed them (the S&H on that package probably cost them a few times more than the value of the strap). If you really can’t afford an amp right away, you can start with a headphone or mini-amp (again see Music-Yo for cheap $ ones – I think under $20). By the way, I looked at guitars at local music shops and compared to the Kramer $69 (now $74.95) guitar. Up to $150 or so, I could not see any visible differences favoring the retail store guitars! I believe these guitars are also made by Samick. Guitar has label saying made in Indonesia. A little internet research showed Samick has a HUGE Indonesian guitar manufacturing operation there and put out thousands of guitars a day. I wouldn’t be surprised if may guitars selling up to $199 or more under many different labels come out of essentially the same assembly line/same materials. Soooo – good luck if your still trying to solve your "too expensive" quandary. I’m afraid this is the cheapest route to a "not too bad" start for a beginning electric guitarist. Only other routes are used, e-bay, pawnbrokers, or something to that effect – and, at least, for me, this is much riskier (I once bought a used "repaired" acoustic for one of my kids at a "guitar flea market". I was trying to "finger pick" the thing and it fell apart in my hand". The glue holding it together gave out. $25 for nothing IS worse than $69 for something that in fact will probably do the trick.

I have been looking all over the internet for a cheap guitar. Twisted Andrew http://wWw.TwistedSite.f2s.com

I know I dont need a tuner, I dont even know what they do. Unless you have a very good natural ear then you most definatley need a tuner to keep your Guitar in tune. Or, In your case, you could have a good rant at something we all know and hate but you have to take it over the top. Why don’t you give up playing the guitar becasue if you take that attitude then you will be smashing your guitar on the walls before you even pick up a pick. PS: A tuner shows you the pitch and tone of your guitar so that you can change it to make it sound like it should Andi —

Hey dude you dont have 2 worry about all those starps and crap like that – all you need for an acoustic guitar is the guitar. You dont need a case if you treat it nicely. A tuner may be usefuul but its not a necessity. Picks are a good thing but its possibke to learn with your hands. SO unless u are becomeing a pro musician within the next month you dont need most of the stuff. With an electric guitar you need the guitar , the amp , and a patch cord- a patch cord is just the cord that attacthes the guitar to teh amp. You cant find very many half decent electric guitars for under 100$ but for around 120$ you can get a nice peavy raptor which is just a beginner electric. you can find if u look around for a but 30$ amps that are pretts small and can fit in your pocket- another alternative is to look at used amps – most are in pretty good shape and are way cheaper. Hope my comments helped- have fun learning – Jesse 😀

Quit your bitching. If you dont want to spend that little bit of money then you dont really want to play. A couple hundred is like nickles and dimes when it comes to buying instruments. Yes. I’m very sorry to ruin your day: But I have to warn you that you may also need to make another investment: A Guitar pick. They are used to get sounds out of your guitar, so probably you will need at least one. I’m afraid this terrible news can discourage you from becoming the artist we all want you to be. May be the world is about to lose you as a musician. Life can be this cruel sometimes. Sorry, again, but I just couldn’t hide the truth any longer…

You probably will have trouble finding a 30 dollar electric, unless it is made of cardboard. If your not willing to pay 150 for a guitar, you dont need to play one. Thats not true at all. I have been playing the guitar for 8 years, and i dont have all of those things. Tuners are not necessary, picks arent if you know how to play good, and things such as straps and bags are just optional. I play all types of music, and many of the so called "necessities" are not needed if you know what you are doing. I agree that picks can be handy sometimes, and straps can be useful, but nothing is necessary except for a complete guitar with strigns, and two hands to play it. : : I have been looking all over the internet for a cheap guitar. Im like you, in certian ways, i recently took up the guitar about 3 moths ago, i started on a £30 ($60ish) guitar (acoustic) which is ok but hard to play notes like an F as cheap guitars are made cheaply. I found this flamenco guitar (small version of an acoustic, with nice wide neck)which cost £13 ($20ish)(from a junk yard!!!!, i found out its worth £700 ($1400ish) i had to resore it mind (£300). But the best way to get a guitar cheaply, which by the way is the compleatly wrong way to look at it, is from a guitar shop!, they can usally give you a good deal on a good second hand guitar which means no shipping costs. Use your brain in buying guitars but the best guitar for your money, save like hell, dont worry on types of strings or straps unless you wanna learn standing up??!!. Good tip,,,Grow your thumb nail and the others a bit longer, and cut the nails on your non strumming hand down and file them. Picks can be brought from guitar/music shops seperatly, if your real broke use your imagination, a coin a old bit of hard plastic, ie a smashed cd case, u can file them in to shapes if you like or if you want to be real weird get a pack of strong false finger nails or your mums/sisters etc old ones (clean if possible) you can then paint them for your own pleasure wich also gives them extra strength. So basiclly keep your eye open for a second hand guitar from someone who dosnt know what there selling, so reaserch guitars, read up etc. I dont know what others say, but if you want to learn acoustic buy and prictice on one, likewize with electric, buy one and practice on it i personnely wouldnt learn the acoustic then play the electric. Also if you wanna learn on the cheap (self talt) type in guitar lessons or guitar tutorials in the net, practice your chords (as many many as possible) and maybe practice some easy tabs of songs you recognise, i found that after learnin a basic A B C D E (F was too hard)i was getting bord but one day, magiclly i learnt an F , Fmin , Gmin and some others and aloth of hard stuff became a lot more simple, i think its coz it streches your fingers more and gives extra stregnth in ur hand as your barreing, i hope i havnt woffled to much so far, but its always a bad idea to buy stuff that you dont know what it dose, tuning just takes practice, and big names like "Fender", "gibson", or "CJ matin and co" will always be dear coz they are quality, have qualitly wood, and the sound properties of them are of high quality. Do not ever buy the cheapest, buy the most exspensive piece of equiptment you can find but make sure you know why its expensive (reasrch) guitars are more complicated than you think, and just coz they may look simular platinum looks like silver and shiny yellow looks like gold so you see what im saying, somthing good will also last you a long time. Or (nearly finished) buy your $30 dollor or what ever electric guitar, then save like mad, get a second job, rob old ladies do what evr it takes to raise like $2000 dollors and buy the best gibson you can get for your mony, then play a little riff with your shitty guitar then with the good one preferably on a goold old powerfull marshal amp and tell me you dont feel the difference, if you dont take the expensive one back and you will be $2000 dollors richer.

I’ll assume you are serious about this subject matter. $69 for a playable guitar of decent quality is as close to a steal as one can find. A guitar that’s decently built (neck, finish, wood, pickups, electronics, tuning heads) is meant to be an item that will last, sound decent, and play comfortably. THe Kramers on music-Yo however are decent entry level guitars. What can you get in todays market that has comparable construction for $69 ? Amps will run you around that too, minimally. Keep in mind that If you get cheap stuff, you probably won’t enjoy the instruments playability, sound and more-than-likely you’ll not pursue the instrument of guitar. YOu can get a smokey practive amp for around 25. Of course if you like the sound of little transister radios, that’s what you will have (at best). Nothing except a few picks will run you 2 bucks tho. You don’t need a strap, you can play sitting down. You think guitar chords are expensive ? Get decent digital cables that conduct sound for any audio feature. Monster cables will cost more than the guitar you think is "too expensive". Anything decent costs abit of money

Personally, I don’t think you should be playing guitar. In fact, maybe you shouldn’t drive because you can’t find a high quality car for $237. Look, you can’t just slap together a bunch of wood, hook on some cat gut, and declare you have a guitar. It takes resources: some sort of craftsperson, a machine to do some woodwork, some wood, some strings, etc. Go to a cheap music store, buy an acoustic, they’ll sell you a single pick – maybe even throw one in, don’t bu a strap – play it sitting in a chair. Don’t buy a case if it’s not going to leave your house. Now, learn some chords, get happy with it, then go out and buy a real guitar that you’ll enjoy for a lifetime. You know what would be even better? Give away your old guitar to a promising student so that they don’t have to go thru the pain you did. As with anything good, there’s a price to be paid. Enjoy it – don’t fight it.

      Press Release:
RARE HENDRIX MASTER RECORDING FOR SALE ON EBAY beginning June 11,2001

The GhettoFighters didn’t start riots they made music but if they had ever gotten to tour, they probably would have caused riots. In 1970 the electric guitar, R&B, and the Blues were all the thing and this music group was right there.

Conceived the year before by twin brothers, Tunde-Ra and Taharqa Aleem, this group counted Jimi Hendrix as its lead guitarist and their song "MojoMan" is the GhettoFighter eBAY is auctioning. The master recording tapes and worldwide rights to this song, with tracks recorded in 1969 both in Muscle Shoals and Electric Lady Studios in New York, are up for sale.

The Aleems were Hendrix’s backup singers on the last three albums "Cry of Love", "Rainbow Bridge" and "War Heroes" and they can be heard on songs such as classic songs as "Dolly Dagger", “Isabella” and "Freedom". The Aleems, formerly known as Arthur and Albert Allen and to millions of
Hendrix fans as ‘The Twins ’, were also his old friends from the days long before Jimi was famous and The GhettoFighter Group grew out of this combination.

But Hendrix’s untimely passing some months later dealt a serious blow to The GhettoFighter project and the Aleems knew they had to rethink the possibilities. After considering all the options they decided to place the tape in their vault and it has remained there undisturbed until recently. Over the ensuing 30 years the brothers have been frequently interviewed about their relationship with Jimi and many aspects, both professional and personal, are well documented. However, the GhettoFighter Group and the existence of the "Mojo Man" tape were only known to a few music business insiders and Hendrix fans.

But now the Aleems have finally decided to make it public and their choice of using a one-minute sample on the internet to sell such an important and historic master recording is revolutionary. But hey, that’s what it used to be all about: Revolution.

For further information and the download sample of MojoMan visit the GhettoFighter website at: http://www.ghettofighter.com

I have a Line 6 Flextone II-XL and like it alot, with the floorboard it’s all I really need, but even though I’ve had no problems (have 3 Line 6 amps, and they have all been ‘thrown about’) I’ve heard alot of horror stories about Line 6 products.

: Anyone have a strong opinion on the best solid state 2X12 (100+ total) amp out there? I need something reliable, not too heavy for transport. Mostly pop and rock.

Yes people do know ‘all those chords’, along with scales and much more… you should at least learn all the open and ‘bar’ chords, and pentonic scale, you can find alot of teaching aids online. Also lessons ARE worth the money (from a good teacher), take a few to learn the basics correctly and you won’t regret it down the road… well good luck.

      : hello Peeps,

: I have a Washburn WR150 ( mettalic purple) guitar that is collecting dust. I would love to play the guitar and have worked on Ironman by Black Sabbath and Crimson and Clover by Joan Jett and have got quite good too. But, I have a small problem. I havent been Playing long, maybe a total time of about 9 weeks. Now I understand your not going to be jimmi hendrix in this amount of time, but I look at tabs and chords and stuff and cannot piece it all together.
: Do People actually know ALL of these chords?
      : Crimson and clover —- first 3 chords are C G and F
: Ok heres my frustration. Bar chords? Open chords? I have acutally seen it played another way that I do not understand. I’m totally confused. I play it bar chords, but it just doesnt sound right.
: My last thoughts are. I would love to be able to play really good. Not for anyone , just for myself..for the sake of saying I can play an instrument.
: Does anyone have any information that could help me get back into playing again. As far as going to see an Instructor, my comment is this….10 or 12 bucks for 30 minutes is a total rip off. I have enough questions to fill up about 15 lessons. Is 150.00-180.00 bucks worth giving up to have somone answer just questions?
: where are the 2 hour lessons at?

: about to sell his Guitar

I’m working on changing the strings on my acoustic guitar for the first time, and I’ve been successful with all of them except the thicker A and E strings. I can’t get the pegs to stay back in the holes after I push them back in. Does anybody have any suggestions?

      2 questions:
      1. This guitar has "ELITE CUSTOM" inlayed at the 12th fret. On the label inside the body it says "Custom Built for Sam Ash". Does anyone know the value of this guitar? Or history or retail price. I have a chance to buy it.

      2. The electronics have been bypassed, ie. if you look inside the back cover hole, you see another wire with a jack for a 1/4" plug not being used and the pre-amp doesn’t work. Anyone know how to hook it up again. Thanks.

My friend Tim used to have a electric 1970 Pooflinger deluxe model Fender Squier Stratocaster and he sold it not knowing its value. after we sold it, turns out that only about 150 of these were made, and since it was shipped everywhere (not just in the US) they are incredibly rare. They are like a regular Strat except they have 4 double coil pickups, and 40 frets. they come with a stock whammy which can also be bent to the side, providing the user with a unique screeching sound. another unique thing about the 70’s model Pooflinger strat is that given the four double coil pickups, they are EXTREMLY sensitive. a good way to tell if u have a 70’s Pooflinger is to rest it on a table and turn the amp up around half-way. you will start to hear a low kinda humming whirring sound if u leave it alone for like 5 minutes. this is the air moving across the strings. there are other Pooflinger models, but none were like the one made in the 70’s. if u have one or know where i can get one lemme know. if you live in or near new england chances are you have mine. if you look on the bridge, the words "i just pulled your leg sucker" are scratched on. lemme know if u have mine or have any model.

I want to get a strat, and I can get a great price on a strat with single coil pick ups. I like to play clean, but i also like the distortion sound. Should I buy the strat with single coils and buy a mini humbucker? If so, which one. if not, why?

I think it’s good to have both an acoustic and an electric if you can afford it, because they can almost sound like two different instruments with the advantage that they’re played the same way!
I started on an acoustic, and having taught guitar for over ten years I still feel that getting an acoustic to start learning on is best. Reasons – you can just grab an acoustic when the mood takes you, with no messing about with amps, leads etc. Also, an electric guitar (without distortion) tends to amplify mistakes
unmercifully, which can be a bit demoralising for a beginner… Finally, an acoustic’s harder action will
tend to encourage better fretboard technique.
Let’s face it, if somebody wanted you to play one at a party and you had to say ‘ooh no sorry, I can only play an electric’, they’d think you were a wimp!

I plug my electric classical into a small Fender Yale Reverb and it works great. These aren’t designed as "acoustic" amps but I find with any amp that if you back off the treble and bass you get good natural sound. I also have a 200 watt bass amp that I use for bigger venues that works the same way.

Doyle Bramhall II & Smokestack have just released the CD "Welcome" on RCA records. I had been anticipating the release. The CD SMOKES, pun intended!! Get this CD. You won’t regret it. Doyle II has been rockin’ with the best of the best since he was 16. From Stevie Ray Vaughan to Roger Waters and now opening for the one and only Eric Clapton, Doyle has always been shining through with his unique style. His smooth playing is especially fine on "Thin Dream" & "Green Light Girl" Check out http://www.doylebramhall2.com – Peace! JanisBlues

      hello Peeps,

I have a Washburn WR150 ( mettalic purple) guitar that is collecting dust.
Do People actually know ALL of these chords?
      Crimson and clover —- first 3 chords are C G and F
Ok heres my frustration. Bar chords? Open chords? I have acutally seen it played another way that I do not understand. I’m totally confused. I play it bar chords, but it just doesnt sound right.
My last thoughts are. I would love to be able to play really good. Not for anyone , just for myself..for the sake of saying I can play an instrument.
Does anyone have any information that could help me get back into playing again. As far as going to see an Instructor, my comment is this….10 or 12 bucks for 30 minutes is a total rip off. I have enough questions to fill up about 15 lessons. Is 150.00-180.00 bucks worth giving up to have somone answer just questions?
where are the 2 hour lessons at?

      about to sell his Guitar

If you use a pedal with an acoustic instrument you’ll just end up getting large amounts of feedback. You don’t say what kind of horn you’re playing. You could probably get by without any effect at all if you play the saxophone, a trumpet would probably require more work on the arrangement.

: There is this goal I want to that will satisfy only myself. I am eventually turning it into a project for school. But for now, I just want to experiment with it. Basically what I want to do, since I am very guitar-illiterate, i want to play a jimi hendrix tune, preferably Voodoo Chile or something to that effect. I have an idea of what i need to do. What I have heard, is that I can attach a mic or somethign to my horn then put a pedal on that with an amplifier. Is it that easy? I want to know exactyl what I should do. Because I really want to do this, and if all goes well I will actually get to perform this. I would appreciate any help. Any places I can go, or what equipment should i get, and how much will it cost? Thank you tremendously whoever helps me.

Ecks and Eddie are both right, if you can only afford one and want to play electric, then by all means start on one. That being said, playing acoustic will do a lot to make you a good guitar player. I’ve found it helpful to do most of my practicing on my flattop, it makes it seem as if the electric is easier to play. The best thing of course is to have both.

: Is it really easier, helpful or a good idea to learn to play on an acoustic guitar as opposed to electric (if you will be playing mostly rock/metal music)? I’ve been told both that you should start on acoustic no matter what and that it depends on the style of music you will be playing. I was just wondering what anyone else’s opinions were. Thanks.

I started on an acoustic myself, and bought my electric 6 months later. I still play the acoustic lots, and I’m pretty glad that I started with it. Learning on the high-action acoustic wasn’t too easy (actually I haven’t played any other guitar since that has that high an action). Starting with an electric wouldn’t have suited me, but when I did buy one it was so much easier to play. Barre chords etc, were virtually effortless, so I could just focus on the fun lead bits that I wanted to learn. Also, if I started with an electric, it would have been more expensive, ’cause of the amp, etc. and when I bought an acoustic (which I certainly would have wanted to do) it would have been an awful lot harder and more frustrating. But that’s just me. It’s up to you, whether you want to start on Limp Bizkit and Papa Roach type music (or indeed any number of other bands and styles) or on songs that work well acousticly (with no effects, overdrive, distortion…), like REM, most of Blur’s stuff, JJ72 (you’d be surprised)… loads. I’d *recommend* an acoustic because it really is a lot of fun, and most of the songs you’ll learn will sound grand without any drums, bass and so on (with bands like Placebo or Muse the other instruments often play without the lead guitar). It’s also easier to sing along with an acoustic guitar, at least for me. Do whatever’s fun :).

It depends on what kind of guitar it is, but a lot of times, yes, you will need to remove a pickup to get to it.

      Check with http://www.musiciansfriend.com or http://www.stewmac.com

I’m not sure what they put on Ovations, but probably either Grovers or Schallers. If you have one of the originals left you might take a good close look at it.

From the back of the peghead, if the screw hole is below the hole for the peg it probably takes Grovers, if the screw hole is to the inside of the peg hole it probably takes Schallers.

: does anybody know where in l.a.can i get original tuning pegs (machine heads)for my celebrity ovation?

If you’re going to be playing things on an electric guitar eventually then just start with that. They are different instruments and if you learn on one you will have to re-learn it on the other. It takes a little getting used to to play an electric if you start with an acoustic. Just start with what you want to play on.

      Hello dudes,
I’m looking to purchase a 8 inch amplifier. My choices now are a GFX-15 crate or a VOX V9159. The VOX sounds cool but I wasn’t sure what the durability and upkeep is on it. It uses a vacuum tube and the crate uses pseudodigital sound production.
      thankyou

Very easy. Tune the 6th string (low E)down one whole step to "D", and that is it. So, the tuning will be D,A,D,G,B,E (low to high.

My father had a Kay guitar given to him in the late 50’s. The wood used in its construction appears to be mahogany and maple. He was the second owner. We know it is a "Student" guitar, but we don’t know what model. The guitar came with an Oahu amplifier which I also have. Question: is there a way I can locate the model number – is it on the guitar somewhere and I’m missing it? Also, what might something like this be worth today? It’s been used very little and is in perfect great condition. Many thanks.

I have a 50’s Kaye Acoustic guitar that I bought used in 1957 and also would like to know more about it. Mine also does not have any model number or serial number, but it sounds exactly like the one you have. It did not come with a AMP, but has the audio pickup, two knobs and the standard monoral jack. If you find out anything on these gutars, please pass the information along. Thanks Gary : My father had a Kay guitar given to him in the late 50’s. When I got my first guitar,my mom wanted me to play acoustic first.I refused!!She dragged me,kicking and screaming to the music store. When we got there, she asked the salesman,"shouldn’t he play acoustic first"??
The dude said,"why…I started on electric." I WAS SAVED!! Had she bought me the acoustic,it would’ve gathered dust in the closet. My point is,if you love electric music, then play electric guitar. It is true that acoustic guitar will harden your fingers, but thats old fashioned mumbo jumbo! In reverse, the more I learned on electric, the more I appreciated the Acoustic!

Is it really easier, helpful or a good idea to learn to play on an acoustic guitar as opposed to electric (if you will be playing mostly rock/metal music)? I’ve been told both that you should start on acoustic no matter what and that it depends on the style of music you will be playing. I was just wondering what anyone else’s opinions were. Thanks.

There is this goal I want to that will satisfy only myself.

Yes, try lighter strings. As for the end screws on the bridge….don’t fool with those, those are for the intonation, not the string height. There are height adjusting screws in each individual saddle on the bridge though, try adjusting those. Your best shot if none of that works is to remove the neck, put a piece of thin cardboard at the bottom of the neck slot and replace the neck, this will change the neck angle, effectively lowering the strings.

      :

      :
: I have a 70’s strat and all of the sudden I realized that my bridge is slanted really high.I tried tuning it again, but it was still really high. I have a regular syncronized tremolo. I tried tightening the springs in the back and tuning by tightening the end screws on the bridge, but no luck. Is there a way to fix my problem without going to the shop? I’m 13 years old and I don’t have alot of money. anyway if anyone could help that would be great. do i need to buy thinner strings?

I would go with a CRATE. I know most tube guys rag on them but I believe it’s because most of them have never played or owned one. The things sound EXACTLY like a tube only better. You can pick up the XT120R(120 watts RMS) for $350 from MusiciansFriend w/free shipping over the internet. They are unbelievably loud, much louder than tube amps of the same wattage. Have the tube "feel" and sound depth or fatness everyone desires. The clean channels are UNBELIEVABLE! Equal to most tube amps. You won’t find a better S.S. amp. You get tube sound and performance with S.S. power and price. I in all likelyness will own a tube amp someday but I’m more inclined to buy another CRATE before I do so. The gain channels are amazing. Blues, rock, heavy metal, jazz, country, industrial, alternative you name it! It can do it and do it VERY well. Very impressive amps. I would strongly recommend staying away from the Line 6’s and other such modeling amps. Digital sounds like crap even if not initially, over time you would see.(pretty sure the same company that owns crate owns line 6) I used to think CRATE was shit until I owned a couple of their amps. They sound very Fendery and a lot like a Marshall on steroids. They sound similar to the Fender Hot Rod Devilles and as far as Marshall goes they sound similar in the gain channels only better. ALL WITHOUT TUBES. Another good comparison of their sound is to CRATES own Blue Voodoo’s which are all tube. Whatever you go with know CRATE has the best S.S. amps around. I have heard the new Behringers are very nice and they also now make a 2×12 model around 100 watts. They use analog circuitry for their amp modeling in most their amps so no digital garbage to ruin your sound. On top of all this Crate has a 5 year transferable warranty and I have in fact had my head serviced by them after there was an electrical explosion and a power cord hit the guitar cable connected to it frying it.

CUSTOM SHOPPE MADE Kirk Hammett SS II W/Original Floyd Rose 2 EMG-81’s,The Skull & Cross Bones Mother of Pearl Inlayed Neck w/Deluxe E.M.G.Road Case, also bearing Music Players Network Internet.Com’s Logo’s (in Sticker Form) on front and backside as well 1-EMG Logo, also in Sticker form, also with ESP’s Lazored Emblem on Case too! We’ve purchased a Case Humidifier to keep it correctly humidified. As well have it in a Safety Deposite Drawer @ local Bank (which our Luthier states as well does G.P. article, that its best to lay Flat when not Playing instrument for long periods of time.IE:Storage.Since this is a one of a kind, and it came with a History being the industry’s largest Multi-Media Buy-Out of Miller Freeman & Assoc’s.Inc-Co.’s New Owner’s Addvertizing Tool. We’ve been told that this was one of Kirk Hammetts many own Personal Instruments that never got played,& was donated to the new owners of G.P.and also in the Oct.2000 or 2001 (I’ll have to check at bank)issue, there’s an article regarding Kirk Hammetts main-stay axe, with pick-up hieghts & tilts by degrees, and ours matches exactly and identically to G.P.’s article. It’s made here in the U.S.A. by the ESP CUSTOM SHOPPE,AND IS NOT LIKE THE ONES SOLD IN MUSICIANS FRIENDS ECTRA.THIS ONE HAS SOLICE POINTS OF HISTORIC VALUE.So with an all these immentities and open warentee as well the storys been mentioned to us that Kirk Played the Instrument live at the 2000 L.A.NAMM Show either 3 times a day for 3 days or just 3 times, once a day for 3 days, were not sure. And does this even matter? All I know is it came with the middle spring rolling around in the spacious cases tool & Strap box,and had a Hip Shot middle Spring installed,as does the one in The G.P.oct.issue with BB King on the front cover. We’ve e-mailed both The Brokerage house that handled the selection and locating of the drawing as well as various musicplayer.com writters asking for history regarding it’s history. With no response. So what do we have here? We have a Certificate that’s hand signed and a Electronic’s covered hand signed by Kirk Hammett in indullable ink. We’ve Played the instrument once each and then cleaned it all up and made sure that the luthier checked all Kirks Spec’s against this KILLER INSTRUMENT~! Wow!It sounds almost as good as my 000.00 Custom Build Jagmin K-1 "Proto-Type" which compares with Builders like Warrior Instruments Dran Michelle grade neck thru instruments. That sell from 500.00 on up to 0k/any way,how do we go about getting a Proper appraisel as well sell it to the highest bidder with out loosing our shorts? Anyone with any answers? Since I’ve been an on and off professional Musician on many levels,Genres,& Types over the years.I would have to say like anything else in life its what one is willing to pay for and settle with. Now,All I know is that if this is truely one made for mr.hammett and was donated after signing and preforeming on it at the Winter Namm 2000.That this should be truely considered as one of his instruments. Thus making this One of a Kind Truely RARE & UNIQUE!In mint condition maybe 15 minutes playing time on it from my wife and I combined. As I stated above. Then Cased. Were Adults with Grand Children as well Christians. So we don’t lie,nor do we really want to own it any more unless at a latter date,it would be worth alot more in the future. So can some one help us out here? Thanks and remember be honest, there’s nothing worse than a Musician that Lies to benefit themselves.Like on the "Antique’s Rd.Show" a woman has her daddys Jazz Box,that’s custom made,in exotic tone woods,in MINT+ condition, was not a fake, the appraiser played it,and even over PBS station you could here the even order harmonic’s resonate like Gods Angels Singing in Unison. The Music Store, appraised it as being worth 800.00’s Hand Signed inside by Di somebody, the same company that makes the New Yorker,as it’s appraisal Value was 5 to 0,000.00’s at auction. Not cool.So only Legit replys please.Thank-You! Cordially in Christs Light we live,Ken & Susan Gordon

I use a finger pick technique that uses both sides of the natural fingernails of my right hand. Because the nails are not very heavy, I occasionally break, tear or somehow screw up a nail. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I just picked up one of these, and I need some info on it. It seems like a really well made guitar. This one is stamped 2/79, so I assume it’s a Feb. 1979 manufacture? It’s also stamped Made in Japan. Any help would be appreciated.
      Thanks!

Van Halen worries too much about showing off. Angus is a more tasteful player on the albums, and he puts on a better show live too. AC/DC kicks Van Halen’s ass as a whole, and while Angus may not have the chops of Van Halen, Angus is a better player.

Van Halen sucks and had too many corporate albums and did songs that fit the popular style at the time. Angus hasn’t changed and still rocks the amps. Eddie sucks. Bottom Line.

Getting tired of strings sticking in my stock nut.
So I got a LRS Roller Nut.
      I’m pretty good with tools.
      Going to do it myself.
Any tips, or what not to do.
      Thanks Again.. Glen

Here’s how to install the LSR. It takes about four hours. Take off all the strings. (I just finished installing one on an Amrican Double Fat Strat with little difficulty.) The LSR kit has two options; upgrade from a Wilkinson Roller nut or start from scratch. First obtain a picture of a Wilkinson Roller Nut (the unit is better than the LSR because it’s an enclosed unit. Even though it’s a little larger. The LSR is fully open and smaller.) Use a rectangular rasp that offers four kinds of roughnesses: arched course and fine on one side, and flat course and fine on the other side. Here’s the easiest way; upgrading to the LSR from a Wilkinson Roller Nut. Using the flat fine side of the rasp, keeping level motions, slowly file down the wood across the neck (on the peg side) behind the old nut until you reach the depth of the bottom of the old nut, keeping level motions. When finished look down the neck toward the bridge and you’ll be able to see the old nut entirely and it’s depth; tap the old nut toward the head stock to pop it out. Now you’ll file and remove wood from the fret side exactly where the olde nut used to be. Measure one notch over 1/16 (you’re bringing the new nut closer to the first fret. So measure and draw a fine line one notch over 1/16th of an inch latterally across the fretboard just below the position of where the old the old nut used to be. Measure the line on the left and right sides of the fretboard using the corners of the first fret as reference points. Both sides should be equal. This next part is tricky. Take the fine flat side of the rasp and position it on it’s side where the old nut existed. Now you’re going to file down the wood towards the first fret to the line across the fretboard. You have to file perfectly in a straight line because this is where the LSR nut is going to sit flush against the fretboard. Now look at the neck from the side. You should have an "L" shaped cut out of the neck. Position the roller nut and restring only the E strings. Center the LSR and insert the screws and tap them to make pilot holes for the drill bit. Unstring the guitar and drill the holes needed for the screws. Replace the LSR and tighten the screws. If it isn’t flush, use tooth picks to fill in the old holes and drill new ones. Now fasten the LSR to the fret board. It’s ugle with all the wood missing. With the black plastic wood cover included with the kit, use a razor blade the remove whatever amount of platic needed to make it fit behind the LSR. Remember, the Wilkinson Roller Nut was this large. The LSR is only a fraction of the size of the Wlkinson Roller Nut. Super glue the black plastic wood cover to the exposed wood and Tah-Dah. You’re in business. Call Dan at 703.237.0698 for help.

You’re supposed to remove wood from the fretted-side of the fretboard to install a roller nut. While living in San Francisco, CA, in 1996, I read in Guitar Player magazine that the Buzz Feiten Tuning System’s modification is just the positioning of the nut one-sixteenth of an inch closer to the first fret. If I were you, I’d do some research on this and look at possibly removing that extra 1/16" of fretboard as well as what is needed to be removed to install the nut. If you are going to do the Buzz Feiten Tuning System modification, you’re going to have to use putty or a shim to fill that extra space behind the nut.

: Getting tired of strings sticking in my stock nut. : So I got a LRS Roller Nut. : I’m pretty good with tools. : Going to do it myself. : Any tips, or what not to do. : Thanks Again.. Glen Glen: I installed a Wilkinson roller nut on my strat. I followed the instructions on the location of the nut and used a straight edge, razor knife, a medium and fine course file for straight edges. You have to be very carefull taking out the old nut and take your time and think before doing or you could really screw up your neck. I used a razor knife to take out my old nut and slowly took it out in about 4 or 5 pieces. I found that the nut was really attached well at the center location bottom of nut. Use the pre-existing cuttout for the old nut as a guide to a nice square cuttout after you have cleaned up the remaining material from the old nut. Fortunately I did not have to use any shims for my nut because the string height was perfect so I lucked out. The secret is to take your time and don’t treat your neck like a piece of construction material but more like a precision instrument.

I have a 70’s strat and all of the sudden I realized that my bridge is slanted really high.I tried tuning it again, but it was still really high.

I know this is potentially a serious problem, and I
have already booked it into the amp doctor. I just
want to know a bit more about what the problem is (or
might be). My old 1970s Laney 100w tube amp is
overheating. The ventilation grill above the tubes
gets too hot to touch (for long). There is also an
orange glow around the base of the output tubes (not
just on the filament). There are also fluctuations
in volume, and it sounds like I’ve got a loose tube
(rattle). What could be the cause (the solution is
bring it to the tech, but I want to have some
knowledge before I talk to him).

I recently obtained a Jcm 800 Combo, I love this little. Unfortunatley I am displeased with the amount of gain after saturation, I am wondering if anyone would know how to "hot rod" this little combo perhaps by an additional pre-amp valve ect. I am not looking for the amounts of gain found in a Jcm 900 or a Boogie but more than can be squelched from what I have now.

If you haven’t already, change the tubes to EL34s, they will deliver a better sound than the standard tubes.
