I’ve got a really kick ass Ibanez SG Copy. Its off white with a brite white pick gaurd. It has gold hardware, bigsby trem, pearl inlays and super 70 pickup. It sounds real sweet. Best damn copy guitar I have ever played.

This is a bit of a curly one, but I have seen a particular guitar used by bands on TV lately (Australian TV) eg Taxiride, and I cant figure out what it is, and I have seen half a dozen of them! They are a carved top (doesnt appear to be maple) with translucent colouring with cream binding and a double cutaway style, twin humbuckers and is similar to Peavey EVH or EB musicman but with a rectangular headstock. Nice looking guitar, but it only appears to be Australian artists using them.

You are beating your guitar to death. Martins are fine instruments. If you are breaking that many strings you need to change (improve) your technique. I haven’t broken a string in years. I play 3 – 5 hours a day, plus repairing some guitars and dressing & filing frets. Plus I also perform. Perhaps your guitar is also tuned too high. Is it tuned to 440? I bought a cambridge 30 twin for a small light amp because I was sick of carting my ac30 around. I played it in the shop sounded great and had enough volume for what I was going to use it for. Took it to a solo gig and after 30 mins it just lost all it`s balls. I was left with a scratchy gutless sound that couldn`t even provide background music. I have since found out that this is common and that there is a replacement chip to give the amp more power. Does anyone know anything about this?

I am interested in learning how to play electric guitar. I’ve been researching online and can spend $500 at the most. I was thinking about getting a Fender Strat, but I’m not sure if this will be good to learn on. Please help me!!

A Strat is a good choice for a first electric; it’s one of the most player-friendly designs ever. You should be able to get a decent one for well under $500 — the Squier series are perfectly adequate beginner’s guitars & run $200 or less; for a bit more, you could get the Fender Standard series (about $350). I wouldn’t advise spending more than that on a first guitar; wait until you have more experience & a better idea of what kind of features you’ll want before you spend serious money (and be sure it’s something you’re going to stick with). Extra money will get you a nicer look, better tone, maybe somewhat better playability, but probably not enough to matter to a beginner. An entry-level Strat is perfectly adequate & will still be useful years down the road — you’ll keep your expensive Les Paul or PRS safely in its case under the bed, but you’ll feel free to leave your beater guitar on a stand in the living room, & you’ll play it 10 times as much. Also, I’d recommend that you pick your guitar in person at a store if possible rather than mail-order or online. Handle a few and notice particularly how the neck feels to you — is it smooth? Is it a comfortable width & thickness? If you have big hands & fingers, you don’t want a tiny neck; if you have small hands, you don’t want a club. Your big concern at this point should be to find a guitar that is comfortable & easy to play; don’t worry about the sound & looks at this point. Also see if you can get the store to throw in a free "set-up"; if not, pay for it ($20-40 bucks). It’ll make a big difference in the way your guitar feels and plays. Good luck.

If no, then it is worth less than that value. Have you checked Ebay? Ebay is a decent indicator of value (or at least what people will pay independent of actual value. If you gotta tap the cord it is probally a faulty connection w/the cord jack or guitar/amp input jack (depending on which side you are tapping). Just ohm them out to find out which, or resolder them all, thats where I would start, actually I would start with just trying another cord and see if it goes away. : when im playing my guitar itll make this really weird noise then i have to tap my chord for a while until it goes away what is that sound from and how do i get rid of it

Kahler flat mount is easier to install on a guitar that has no factory trem. I prefer the Floyd though. Kahlers are too bulky and have a rep for being unreliable in tuning stability.

It really sounds like the "knife edges" have dulled or the corresponding fulcrum point on the posts have worn. This can cause the exact problem that you have described. These edges have to be sharp to minimize friction and allow the trem to return to the same zero position each and every time. It sounds like yours is binding. Take a close look at the edges on the trem. They should look similar to a knife edge and not rounded or flattened. The corresponding post surfaces should not be worn or rutted. The posts are easily replaced. The knife edges may or may not be replacable depending on design. A quick and dirty fix on the blades could be achieved with a Dremel tool with a fine grinding stone bit. Good luck!

And after you waste you time on this then check your springs, if this was the problem you would have already noticed it on initial inspection. I’ve go 3 FR trem guitars and have been using and setting em up for years, this yahoo can’t even get rid of a fret buzz on his ’50s LP’ so I would take this his ‘advice’ with a grain of salt. I have to admit that Gordo has a valid point. (even if he doesn’t know the difference between a 50’s LP and a box of crackers, his 50’s LP has a bolt on neck…whew) I have a Schaller Floyd in my spare parts bin that I removed for the exact reason he described. But I would try adjusting the springs before I did anything drastic like drop 200 bucks on a new trem.

I agree it is a valid point. and I know the webpage he copied it almost word for word from without credit, but I just assumed that worn ‘blades’ would be so obvious that the guy woulda noticed it, also the worn ones I’ve had normally are near impossible to tune/intonate as any picking or resting just your hand on it puts it out of tune, my experince of going outta tune only after using the trem usually means a tension adjustment, also telling me my head is up my ass just assures that all his posts now will get a flame right back from me. He also posts as ‘tron’ and ‘unidefined/known luthier’, for some reason when he posts as gordo he goes outta his way to sound/spell like an idiot. : I have to admit that Gordo has a valid point.

Maybe it’s time for new springs ?? try just tightening them some and see if it helps. : i play a jackson dinky ex pro w/ floyd rose. lately for some reason evey time i whammy or just start playoing super fast it goes way out of tune. its not strings trust me i know how to stretch them. what could it be??? i wanna get somewhat of an idea before i take it in somewhere and sheel out the $$$. thanks alot in advvance

maybe you could adjust the intonation. the pull from the strings has to be equal to the pull of the springs… have you tried tuning flat a half step?

Make sure the pickup is close enough to the strings. If thats not it, you may have a dead coil on that pickup or a wiring problem that needs to be checked by a tech.

I logged onto this site and noticed a comment that claimed that Solid-State amps sound bad. Ah Ha!!!! Touche!! That is somewhat true, but not completely. I have a Fender Stage 100. It is completely solid-state, and it sounds fantastic. Yes, I think tube amps for the most part sound better than solid-state, but I also believe that the Fender Stage 100 is part of a very small handful of solid-state amps that sound really good.

I’m looking for some information on my guitar. I have a 1991 Gibson Les Paul (first 2 numbers of serial are 91*********; bought Brand new from Mr. Gruhn himself). This one is different. Gold Hardware, Humbucker-single-humbucker, a 5-way switch and a 2 way switch. 1 Volume knob, 1 one Tone knob. Cherry Sunburst black fret board. Seems to have a Les Paul Junior Body, "Les Paul Model" Written on the top. No mother of pearl inlay on the outside. Much Lighter than a Standard. I was told it was a prototype. If anyone has any info, please email me.

I own a 1991 Les Paul Standard that I bought in a consignment shop in Columbus, Ohio in 2001. The ID# is 93191351…1st. and 5th. give me the 1991 and the 319 = Nov. 15. But according to Bluebook the last three digits should be in the 500+ range not the 351 as it’s stamped. The guitar has a Natural Maple top and gold hardware. Can someone explain the last three digits to me??? Bill

I also don’t know wht you call "cheap" but very good quality handmade guitars are Norman, Sea Gull, and Art & Luthier guitars made in rural Quebec. They aren’t great on appearance,(very plain), but great sound and great action at a reasonable price, and with solid 800 year old cedar and spruce tops. Cord

I don’t see how they could damage the guitar as 12’s are still kinda light/medium strings for an acoustic, so go for it. : Hello, : I own a YAMAHA APX4A (acoustic) guitar and since now I have been using .10 and .11 strings. Hi: I agree that 12 are still light strings and shouldn’t hurt a thing; and you will gain a bit more volume. My concern would be more related to what weight strings were on your guitar when it was last set up. But if you only go up to 12s it shouldn’t make very much difference. There are also some great Martins and Gibsons to be obtained there too. It depends on how much money that you wish to spend, but I have had 100% success with honsty, and quality, etc. on ebay. Although I recommend 1980 and older Gibsons, I am not as satisfied with the quality of the sound in the newer ones. It many be just my gut feeling, but I don’t think that they are getting the high quality woods that they used to get in years past. Martins continue to be great guitars. : If anyone has any guitar chords or notes to graham colton songsemail them to me please………of any other guitar music…..Chewy they’re not usually hard to figure out..i’m not at home with my guitar right now, but i can tell you that cellophane girl (sp) is played w/ capo on the 3rd fret. G, D, X22033, X32033. the chord he does real quick before the chorus is XX223X. the chorus just switches the chords up a bit. Chris Fagan

Any advice: what wood it is made of? Does it really sound better getting older? Mine is of ’99 production year. How long should I wait to get a real cool sound (take it as a joke)? Greetings from .ru

I think they are laminated maple w/spruce top, and don’t think ‘age’ will improve the tone any, I have one and put 57 classics and new tuners on it and it sounded ‘pretty decent’ then, but I think that is about as good as it’ll get, unfortunately they are just middle of the road archtops, I still gig with it though and its held up pretty well. I finally got a 355 about 2 years ago and there is no comparsion. : Any advice: what wood it is made of? Does it really sound better getting older? : Mine is of ’99 production year. theres an ad ‘confirmation’ that pops up here asking to install a ‘price comparision’ program, it is a VIRUS so do not choose ‘yes’, also choosing not to install the program will close or hang your browser but it is better than infecting your pc with this crap. Well I’am outta here, popups I can deal with, but ad tracking and virus crap I don’t need.

Alot depends on how ‘good’ the condition is, one way I find useful is to go on ebay and search on completed auctions of the same guitar and it gives a pretty good heads up of what they are really going for, you can look up the ‘bluebook’, and use that as a gauge too. : I have played my 1975 LesPaul Custom for 23 years, and I’m just curious bout it’s value today. Play in band with accordian, mandolin, conga’s, guitar, and upright bass. Guitar and bass play thru SWR amplifier, California blond for bass and Strawberry blond for guitar. Guitar is Breedlove. There is feedback from the guitar that does not seem to go away. Play thru a pre-amp and use a volume pedal. Is it just something in how the settings on amp are? Could it be the pick-up and those settings? Is it a comibination? Any input would be welcome. Have tried better cords, better pre-amp.

: if ur guitar has 5 way switching take the switch off of the bottom and move the switch up, and dont stand close 2 da amp, or if dat dont work then put ur hand over the strings wen ur not playin.

Hey all, I came across a Spanish guitar which I’ve never seen before. It’s a Leyenda/Seyenda (the first letter is hard to read). Anyone know what this is, or it’s value? Like I said, I’ve never seen it before, nor have my friends who know a lot about guitars. Any help would be appreciated! Pls respond to [email protected], thanks

Hello I’m looking for a special effect "bajo sexto effect". It is an effect that would make an electric guitar sound like a bajo sexto acoustic guitar, my friend saw a band using one of those but I haven’t been able to find it. Do you know of any address or place that I could find one? I appreciate it. Enrique.

Considering the Bajo is tuned lower than a standard try using an "octave pedal". I will automatically double each note you play either an octave about or below. It sounds pretty close, but without the woody acoustic sound. Also one thing I’ve noticed that electric player usually do here in Michigan is play their guitar through a bass amp. hope this helps.. Hank, I have never heard of a effect for the bajo sexto. You could probably try an acoustic effect or maybe even an acoustic preamp. It also depends on yuor guitar. You can get close the sound you are looking for by adding mids and taking out lows. Once you find a sound similiar then work on your technique. The mimic the bajo, limit the number of strings you play. When I am using a guitar I treat it as a Bajo Quinto/Sexto. When playing conjunto on an electric guitar don’t play all the strings. Look at the chords that you are using. Are they bar chords? Barchords ring too much and it is hard to control the sound. Use the bajo chords. This means don’t play the the 1st and 2nd string. So learn the bajo chords. I am putting together a book that discusses this in further detail. It will be out in about a year if i can get it published. It will be in english because it is geared to keep the bajo alive and well in the US. You can email me at [email protected] Please email me and let me know how it is going. Learn the chords and think about getting a bajo quinto (Don’t get a Lone Star. It is affordable but the sound does not fit well amplified conjuntos. If you don’t believe me go see a Stampede show. Get a Guerrero ($700)or maybe a Gabi.).

I have the exact same amp and had the exact same probs. A buddy of mine told me to turn on the power only (not the standby) and leave it on for 24 to 48 hours. He told me if you use it for short periods, it doesn’t give it a chance to charge the caps. It worked for me. I still have to do it every couple months because I don’t play for long periods. let me know if it helps.

I recently bought a Rocktron Banshee talk box. I did a lot of research into the different talk boxes knowing that I wanted to get one and i decided on the banshee for a couple reasons. I was looking at the danelectro free speech box for a while, but I read a lot of reviews that said it was horrible for playing live because the tube wasn’t long enough. Also, the effect’s quality wasn’t as good and was not truly comparable to the heil talk box that most of the famous musicians like Peter Frampton used. The other was that the banshee is also built similarly to the danelectro in that it wont kill your amp if you turn it up too loud. That is the problem with the heil and many other earlier talk boxes. The banshee sounds amazing and it’s easy to set up. All you have to do is plug in your guitar to one side of the pedal, put a cord from the other side to the amp, and run the tube up next to a microphone. when you turn the effect off, you play normally through the amp and when it’s on, all the sound comes through the tube and with your mouth over to tube, the sound is picked up by the mic. They’re all pretty similar in price , so I definitely think the Rocktron Banshee is the way to go.

Hi: I was recommending acoustic guitar strings, for an acoustic guitar. Did you buy electric strings? You should have. There are thousands of professional musicians using Martin bronze strings, including full time studio musicians. They are fine strings, although they may not be fresh. It depends on the volume of sales in the store where you bought them. I get mine within two weeks of the factory. Also, if you have rattle it is not the strings. There are several things that mush be checked. I do my own work, but I suggest that you see a profesional Luthier. Flame is correct. The first thing that should be done is to have the truss rod in the neck adjusted. That will help give you some correction up to about the 8th to 10th frets. Also, if your guitar was set up for a heavier gauge set of strings the last time that the rod was adjusted; and you have put on a lighter set, that can often cause string rattle. While it is very true that your frets could be uneven and may need to be filed and dressed; or even some of tghem may need to be replaced, you don’t want to have anybody start filing and dressing the frets until everything else has been checked, because every time you file and dress the frets you are lowering the height of those frets and they will wear out sooner. Good luck, Cord : : I used Martin bronze 80/20 strings on my 50’s special model Les Paul but when I took it to my friends house and plugged it in his amp only the first two strings were loud and the others didn’t sound good either. Do you anybody have some experience – good or wrong, with G Major guitar procesor from T.C.Electronic?

: Do you anybody have some experience – good or wrong, with G Major guitar procesor from T.C.Electronic? I’ve got one. It works great with my Marshall, which has a serial effects loop. The effect quality is outstanding. However, I just picked up a used Boogie Rectifier Tremoverb, which has a parallel effects loop. It doesn’t work at all. The G-Major doesn’t have the ability to turn the mix completely wet, and remove the dry signal. It also sends the dry signal back to the amp with the phase reversed. Therefore, you get a really nasty doubling effect. Picture an analog delay set to .001 ms delay – ALL THE TIME! Save your money and get a Rocktron Replifex. I’ve had one in the past, and I’m getting one again. Not only does it have all of the cool vintage effects in it, it’s clean, quiet, and has a HUSH in it instead of the gate that’s in the G-Major. The best part: it’s $350 instead of $500. Most stores don’t carry them as regular stock, but any store can order them, and Guitar Center told me I can special order one for $250 and they could have it in a couple of days. T.C. Electronics really screwed me.

Simply detune the bottom ‘E’ string down to D. The rest of the strings are left in normal concert pitch. It’s easy as you can always tune it against the pitch of the normal D string.

: I second that. Also, a fun tuning is tuning to open E. You can do alot of old rolling stones stuff with that. : Simply detune the bottom ‘E’ string down to D. In looking at the Jackson LTD 88 on the Jackson Guitar website (in the Mother of all Inquiries Section), I see it shows 2 pickups (a humbucker and a single coil) with volume control, a 3 position selector switch, and also a Schaller trem. Does anyone know if any of these were made with the tone control and Jackson (JT6) trem unit or did this have to be an add-on? Dave S.

I have a Rivera TBR-5 using Rivera 6550a tubes stamped 6, and replaced them with Mesa Boogie 6550’s. They are all marked AC YEL- however two have a 38 and the other two have a 45 stamped. They were sold as a matched Yellow Quartet- When installed the bias current leapt from the expected 160mA to 300 odd. When bias pot is fully reduced it is still 260 mA. Question 1: does anyone know if this is actually a matched set of four as yellows or does the 38/45 stamp mean something? Question 2: Could this contribute to the huge swing in output current? Or is it possible to change eg resistors to bring this current back down? Thanks for any help/response. Tim

I’m expecting a slap in the face from Mr. Amaker, but I’m asking this lame question anyway, brave sould that I am. How do I make my pinky stronger? I’m giving Steve a lot of material here, but I’m serious. I’m a beginner, have an acoustic, and my pinky is just plain convulsive. I gotta get it under control. Hmm.Trills are probably the best excersise I can think of.Use the A pentatonic and trill your way up and down the scale.I use the C lydian or D mixolydian mode to work out my pinky.Go slow, then build up speed. Good Luck

hahaha…. mmmmm, I pass on the easy vulgar remark, but an easy way is 1st finger 1st fret 6th string then trill the 4th fret w/pinky a few, pull off to the 1st, slide to the second, trill/pull off the 5th… all the way down to at least the 12th, then back up, and on each string… also practice slides w/pinky, like slide from the 3rd to 4th fret 6th string then "roll" pinky onto 5th string 4th fret then play 4.3.2.1 or any pattern ya like, and do it down/up the neck/strings, you should defintely feel that and after about a week or 2 you should notice a difference, also barre each fret and practice trills/pull offs w/each finger, string skipping, patterns, scales etc without removing the barre… and last but not least rippp those scales/modes w/o using your 1st finger, I found that the best practice for working/stretching ole pinky, now if ya want to hear something crude/but funny… just let me know… I can defintely oblidge there. ohh yeah, go to wholenote.com : I’m expecting a slap in the face from Mr. Amaker, but I’m asking this lame question anyway, brave sould that I am. : How do I make my pinky stronger? I’ve had numberous Strats over the years, right now I have a "Big Apple Strat" with humbuckers. Theres something about the humbuckers that just don’t give you that classic "Strat sound" so I want to get a single coil Strat. However, I’ve never had one with Lace Sensor pickups, and although I hear they are good because they buzz alot less, I’m just wondering if you scarifice any of that classic tone for the noise reduction. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. DCO

However, I’ve never had one with Lace Sensor pickups, and although I hear they are good because they buzz alot less, I’m just wondering if you scarifice any of that classic tone for the noise reduction. : Any advice would be greatly appreciated. : DCO It all depends on the specific single coil sound you’re after. I’m currently getting ready to change out some stock single coils in my Strat with Red, Silver & Gold Lace Sensor(s). I had a Strat plus for many years with Lace sensor Golds which I ran through a Roland GP8 into a Marshall 2×12 JTM reissue. The golds give you a glassy bell like tone that is much closer to a vintage type of single coil sound. It’s never going to be exactly the same but I’m willing to sacrifice some of that sound for versatility. They are phenomenal for anything from super clean to a moderate distortion effect but for a super overdriven/distortion they are HORRIBLE. Red lace sensors on the other hand are great for that raw overdriven/distortion. If you want versatility, go with a Red in the bridge, a Silver in the middle and a Gold in the neck. (Blue version SUCKS) The red are unbelievably hot while the Silver give that great early 70’s mid range sound. The biggest advantage to using lace sensors in my opinion is versatility. Unlike most all single coil pickups, you can plug a strat with lace sensors straight into an amp / effect setup that’s more geared towards a guitar with humbuckers. While standard single coil pick ups won’t hum if you use the 3rd or 5th switch position on a strat, you usually have to fiddle with eq settings on your amp/effects because they tend to be screechy when you overdrive them. I was in the store just yesterday with my processor/amp and was amazed at how my processor/amp settings, which are configured for my Les Paul Standard, sounded perfect when I played the lace sensor strat through it. I wouldn’t buy a strat plus but would rather refit a newer strat with the aforementioned lace sensor designations. Find a Strat you really like and refit it with lace sensors!

I was also interested in where these guitars come from – I presume an Asian maker and marketed in Europe? Does anyone know? The day before yesterday I bought a Gibson SG. It’s my first Gibson and I’m pretty darn proud. Traded some digital effects I haven’t used in ages in and put minimum cash in between. And yes, my question is: When ever was it made? I found a site claiming to possess the key to riddles you will meet, solve and forget when dating Gibsons, but I couldn’t make any sense out of it. On the headstock (reverse side) it says 175180 or 175130. (It’s a respray, excessive sanding.) MADE IN USA stamp present. Ivory head vintage Klusons may be retrofit. Strange bridge, BADASS, german, recieves ball end from aboard, 2 giant mounting posts with flathead slots received by countersunk brass sockets. PU selector on mainboard, front position. Two buckers, treble seems original Gibson, stamp: FEB 1979 (a fact partly reponsible for my mistrust in the website), rhythm saying MIGHTY MITE, non-visible magnet ends on reverse side (i.e, flat), Headstock black, golden Gibson logo, truss rod cover looks plain but hand-made. Someone flipped the machine heads bass-to-treble. When I flipped them back, positions did not excactly conform to old screw holes. That’s why I suspect Klusons to be rf. A slab of wood in the control-area has been taken out to accommodate some kind of preamp which is no longer there. Magically, the ORIGINAL slab has been glued back in, before respray. No pick-guard, apparently non-original P/U frames (they’re slant, les paul-type). Filled and oversprayed screwholes suggesting variously shaped pick-guards. 2V2T std. Gibson control layout (common cap to ground tone control). Used to have Di Marzio 500K all around, all 4 rendered useless by sanding dust (I’d love to have a talk to the guy who didn’t dismantle the electronics before he started sanding, ha-ha). Hook-up wire of lead PU was spliced midway, now replaced. What else? I think that’s about it. Oh yeah, it had .08s on in the shop and I tweaked the rod a bit to accommodate my 11-52s. Anyone playing fatties on an SG? If there is, say, some crucial do-and-don’t on how not to break the handle off of your cutting board or something, I’d be happy to hear about it. I put 500K "Ernie Ball" pots in. Here in Budapest, the selection of quality spare parts is anything but wide, does anyone know if these pots are any good? They appeared a bit pricey, the satchet said made in Taiwan. Any feedback dearly appreciated. espen stigroarhusby.com

How do you no when to change strings. Do they break and then you change them or do you change them when they all get black? My les paul has 4 strings that are black but hey still sound but I doen’t have a amp yet so I don’t no how loud they are yet but none of them are broken yet so can I keep playing them now? I need a mp that is big and loud cheap and I need to now which wires to sodder to fix the buz in it to.

Some strings last longer than others. If the weather is humid the strings will oxidize more quickly, which will make them sound flat, and feel rough and yucky under your fingers. Some strings streach out more quickly than others, and then they sound flat. In some cases they will sound worse in some cords than they do in others. I change strings very frequently, i.e. as little as a week, and seldom longer than six weeks. I use Martin bronze 80/20 because the are economical and therefore it costs so litte to keep fresh strings on your guitar, and they have a beautiful ring to the them. After all, they come on new Martins and they are not going to risk losing their wonderful reputation for high quality by selling junk. I have two guitars that I believe are quite decent: 1 a J200 Gibson; and, 2 a B-20 Norman. I hope that I have been of some help. Cord : How do you no when to change strings. You’re the same guy that got ripped off on an old wannabe Les Paul for $500, aren’t you. That’s terrible. I just bought an epiphone les paul custom for 560 brand new. plays, feels and sounds like a gibson cuz it’s made by gibson. nothing worn. it has a warranty. it even has new strings. yours are black? please change them. you said they sound? sound what? good or bad? or at all? do you have an amp at all? do they sound good without an amp? the buzz won’t be fixed by soldering anything. that’s the action. anyway, change the strings and you hear and feel a difference, amp or not. : How do you no when to change strings. I was hoping that there were some serious guitar enthusiasts were in this discussion group. there seem to be a lot of buffons. Regarding Epiphones; yes they are now made by Gibson, but they are not as high a quality as the gibson line. At one time in history, when Epi himself ran the company they were very competitive rivals to Gobson. Epi died of Leukemia, and then his brother and some other syblings took control. Because of sybling rivalry some stokc were sold and eventually gbson bought enough share so control their major competition. They gradually turned the great Epiphone name into a lesser quality line of instruments and gave the Gibson line the greater promenence. Gibson eventually moved from Kalamazoo, Mich and set up two sepearate plants in Tenn. one each for Gibson and Epiphone, although the major Gibson flattops and custom shop is located in Montana. I’ve been playing since 1960 and I’ve played lots of Epiphones and Gibsons. They do have some differences currently. What a player needs to consider is why he’s playing. An Epiphone plays plenty good enough if you practice and costs 1/3 of a Gibson. If you have the extra to spend, go play both and then decide. Personally, I change the entire set of strings when any one of the strings causes me any doubt about how it is holding up. Stay in tune, practice and stay in your budget or you’ll never get an amp or your wife will send to Ebay to get rid of that toy,..I mean investment. : : You’re the same guy that got ripped off on an old wannabe Les Paul for $500, aren’t you. I’ve been playing for many years. I’ve seen and played lots of expensive gear:you name the brand, I’ve played it. ALL inexpensive guitars,(anything under $1000), are made in Korea,China, Indonesia. These other jokers are blowing smoke up yer butt. If you can’t hear the difference between a $3000 and a $350 guitar, why spend the extra money? If you have the money, buy more than one "Cheap" guitar in other colors. They WILL blast me for this, but the truth is, NONE of the ELECTRIC guitars over say $1500 are worth the money, not one!!! They all say "The resale value is better." Who the hell cares!?!? If you plan on buying a guitar and selling it, you should re-think your whole way of thinking. I thought you wanted to PLAY the guitar or bass, not sell it!!!!

Do they break and then you change them or do you change them when they all get black? I have a J200 Gibson that I purchased new 34 years ago. I have recently filed and dressed the frets; and lowered the bridge with the two adjsustment screws which are located at each end of metal portion on the bridge. I would like to set the strings just a bit lower. Has anybody on this forum ever filed or ground the bottom of the metal portion of a Gibson moustache bridge? How much can I safely grind or file off the bottom portion? Cord

I recently bought an old American made Peavey electric guitar with its original hardcase. I do not know what model or year it is. It has a plain timber finish and appears to be from the 70’s (i think). Importantly it came with it’s original moulded hardcase which included a built in amplifier. Does anyone know anything about this guitar? Any assistance will be well recieved. Thanks

Sounds like a T15 or a T10. These were part of the T series that I believe began in the mid to late seventies. The T60 was the top of the line 6 string and I believe the T40 was a bass. The lower numbered models had variations in pickups an bridge saddles. I suspect that yours has a solid piece with only an overall intonation adjustment (not individual saddles for each string). They all had super thin necks. Very solid guitars and usually still a bargain today. In 1978 the T60 sold for $269.00 with case which was a good deal for a US made guitar.

Lately, my amp has been putting out this distorted sound on clean setting. Doesn’t sound bad for distortion, actually, but i want it to go away. It comes and goes, and sometimes it goes away when i restart my amp. It isn’t just static from my pickups if that’s what you’re thinking! Any ideas on why this happens?

sounds like the decoupling caps are breaking down. check these in each of the preamp stages and also the reverb stage if it has reverb. it maybe a good idea just to change these out as you are having intermitent problems. one other idea (since i don’t know any of the specifics) if your guitar has active electronics, it may be time to change the battery as this can also cause the described problem. good luck

Just got one and agree – the manual is c***onfusing. I have started to play around and write down my own notes as I go – for reference. I think it is going to be possible to create some good stuff but the catch is that the "Styles" seem to predefine the drumbeats etc and so the overall approach is more like cutting and pasting sound bites – which would be OK if you could keep in your head, or see laid out, all the possible patterns that are locked into the "Forms". I’m on the Web looking for help with this. If anyone knows of a good manual on the JS-5, please let me know. (P.S. Hope your dad is not in the nut house – but if he is, I could be joining him there).

I too just got a js-5 this weekend, I have found certain parts of it to be very simple, but at the same time ther are parts of it that are extreamly hard to figure out..Like the instructions on creating your sounds from the pre-set sounds bits…and also I cant figure out if there a system, where you can creat you OWN drum paterns and rythm?? Good luck finding info on the system..if you find anything at all, please keep me notified at the e-mail above!!

Aside from buying a JCM900 or a Plexi, what distortion box would be able to give me that raunchy distortion through my Vox? I’m looking for a straight jacked dirty Marshall sound (a la Guns n’ Roses, etc.) Thanx!

Here a little late comment. Well, in my younger days (80’es) I had the same problem as you. I was into Heavy Metal, but I owned an old AC-30 top. (Not the Top Boost model). No matter what distortion pedal I put on, I couldn,t get the Marshall sound.I studied Physics on University too, and later I buyed a JCM 800 split channel. My electronic knowledge grow and today I have a fully understanding of what was going on. One of the problem with the old AC-30, was the power supply circuit. It had a tube rectifier (GZ 34) and small electrolytic caps. The Marshalls have diode recifiers (1N 4007) and bigger caps. When you make the pumping sound by muteting the lower strings (E & A) with the palms, the Vox will sound mudderet. This is because the power supply can’t believer enough energy to the the output tubes. Solution : replace the caps with bigger values, but by doing this the GZ 34 will probaly burn off, so replace with 2 1N 4007’s. You have to be in the electronics to do this or you will have a proffesional tecnican to do this. Or buy a Marshall. (The straight pluged in sound doesn’t exits, The JCM 800 split had an diode retifier circuit in the sound-pad to clip the wawes). And the newer models (JCM 900 SL-X & 2000) have normal distiontions circuit with Op-Amps and transistors.) But keep you Vox, it is good to play Beatles and early U2 music style on (without Fat pumping rhytmic pads like Van Halen or Def Leppard).

Hey, I am very intersting in guitar circuits, like the ones in the Jaguar. I can’t find any real information though. I want to install a "Black Ice" module, which replaces the capacitor on the tone knob and is a passive overdrive/distortion circuit, controllable by the tone knob once you put it in place of the tone capacitor. I have no idea what capacitor to use though. Any information would be cool. I just wanna learn more.

Hello I have played the violin for thirty years. I now want to learn to play the instrument of my dreams…Flamenco Guitar. Should I buy a classical acoustic to begin with and when I have acquired sufficient skill move on up to Flamenco or should I go straight for the Flamenco. Is the Flamenco guitar enough to play other styles, eg I live within sight of Venezuela and I love the sounds coming over the radio from South America. Advice please.

I would start with some classical technique first, from there you can move into Flamenco or Bossa with a good foundation. I did clasical first and now I play lots of styles, celtic, classic rock and some Flamenco. I have some info at my homepage that may be of interest, links to soundclips, some free scores and online lessons, http://www.jimgraham.ca Jim

Help ! My tone control and 3-way tone switch were inoperable so I pulled out the wiring and controls and found the blue wire hooked to the tone knob was connected to nothing on th other end. It was just tucked up in the shielding. Can anyone tell me where to attach the other end of this blue wire? I’m assuming it goes somewhere on the3-way switch? The volume knob works but seems to also boost the tone a little. Thanks
