I have an old Framus Acoustic and I was wondering about the value of it. It is a 12 string with a bulge in the back and a bird and roses engraved on the pickgaurd. The tag inside of it says "Built in the heart of Bavaria" and the serial # is 008433. Please e-mail me if you know anything about this guitar.

do les paul studios neck play like standard necks do? What is the difference in the pickups?

      • #90679
        Anonymous
        Guest

Les Paul Studios are supposed to have the same necks as Standards and the pickups are exactly the same. The difference in the name (and price) is because the Studio uses Pearloid Inlays as opposed to real Pearl, the logo on the headstock is painted or etched on as opposed to inlayed, there is no binding around the body, and the tuners have platic buttons instead of completely metal machineheads. In my opinion, the guitar is just about as good, because you really have to know every intricacy of the guitar to notice those differences, and to be honest, most people don’t. Sad but true.

Could someone explain this, or please provide a link? Thank you, —I THINK AFTER EXTENSIVE RESEARCH GEORGI PROVIDED YOU WITH SOME GOOD DEFINITIONS. BUT, YOU KNOW, YOU CAN DO ALL OF THOSE THINGS ON ACOUSTIC AS WELL. HAMMER ON-PULL OFF, TRY IT WITH YOUR FUCK YOU FINGER ON THE SECOND FRET, G STING IN A BLUES 145 PROGRESSION. SHIT, YOUVE BEEN PLAYING FOR HALF A YEAR, YOU DONT KNOW WHAT A 1-4-5 IS ? O.K., PLAY THESE CHORDS IN A BLUES STYLE—AM,D9,E9. IF YOU CAN, RECORD YOURSELF PLAYING THIS PROGRESSION—-NOW DO THE VOODOO HAMER ON- PULL OFF–YOU CAN DO THIS FOREVER AND IT NEVER GETS OLD–ROCK ON!!!

ok this is how i understand it (and play)… Hammering is where you pick one note and then, without piking a second time, "hammer" on another note with your left hand, so you play two notes but only pick the first. Its a pretty basic thing but youve gotta have strong fingers! i dont know about "pull ons" but pull offs are the opposite of hammering; pick a note, and then release the finger that is holding the note (left hand) and allow a note below the first to sound. but don’t pick the second. is very useful for fast solos etc. Palming is where you play a chord/ note etc and then "damp" the string (s) with your right hand palm/ side of hand, so you cut the sound short. Sliding is where you play a note/ bar chord / chord etc and, keeping your left hand in the same position, slide it up/down the fretboard, play a second note/chord. pick/strum both positions. gotta go now more later! ok i dont know much about distortion… being a college student, i dont have the latest amp outfit for my electric guitar etc but i can tell roughly… its when you change the sound, using an amplifier with the "distortion switch"… it sounds kinda strong and is often used in metal, etc… id have to ask someone else on this board, for more info.

Since receiving this much appreciated response to my questions regarding the dating and approximate value of my guitar, I have been reading up on the history of BC Rich acoustics, and the serial numbering formats they used to indicate the years in which they were made and the specific number of the total produced in that model of that year. Based on what I have read, however, I don’t understand how mine was determined to have been built in 1975. Can someone please enlighten me? Thanks in advance for your help! : : Have an older(roughly 25 yrs) model B-28, serial #507389,looking for information on history and approximate value : Serial # makes it a 1975, Made between 1967 – 1982 : in california at Bernie Chavez rico’s Dad’s shop Bernie not his dad. nice quality. Well the normal pre 76′ serial # scheme is ymm xxx Y=year 2 through 5 1972-1975 mm= month the month can be 1 or 2 digits and sept can be 09 or 9 (don’t ask me why but they did’nt stick to either way) the xxx = production #’s but it by group. they tended to group b-28,B-30,B-38 together. the B-45’s were seperate. the b-20’S were seperate. the electrics were seperated by model the total was up to that point not by year. The pre 72 system was Bernie Sr’s Dad’s. and it normally was 1101-1 with the year accross from it on the label. the 76 and above started with a yy = year (76) there were some 75’s with that format also. All and all it is a confusing hap hazard system that requires a bit of conjecture. Hope that helps. However, the best overdrive stomper I’ve heard is the BACKSTONE.FUGEDDABOUDIT!! It’s $225.00,but worth every penny!I love mine. Some of my choices

Because of the two humbuckers, humbuckers allways sounds great. I´ve played everything from rock to soul, blues and even jazz on mine. I’ts a good sounding guitar but, I can only rekomend buying a Jacksson if your ambission is to play metal or rock. It feels pretty silly playing a Jazz-standard with a guitar looking like that. Bye!

Both guitarts are great. But I’ll tell what I like and don’t like about each. The JEM’s have the prefered neck for me (flat & fast). But the JEM555 has the "Lo TRS II" bridge. This bridge has a wide spread flaw, the tremelo arm has a nut that screws onto the bridge, the threads on this nut usually always get striped, this makes it difficult to get the arm on or off (if at all). The best fix for this problem is to replace the bridge with the LO TRS(original – $250.00). You can not put the "Lo Pro Edge" on the JEM555. The JS1000 has the "Lo Pro Edge" tremelo which is a much better bridge. But the JS1000 has only two humbucker pickups. The dual humbuckers may be just fine for your taste but I prefer the H-S-H pickup configuration that the JEM’s have because you can get a more variety of sounds (tones).

you can clean your guitars with "Lemon Oil" / "Carnuba Wax".; most guitar stores carry cleaners made from these ingredients.I’ve been using lemon oil on my Martin D28 for 12 years and couldn’t be happier with the results.I also recommend GHS "Fast Fret" for string cleaning.

Is there a good way of getting the amp/cabinet simulations on a POD 2.0 in a live situation? Also, the sound I get is not very clear if I am playing with another guitarist. It was much clearer when I use to play with just one pedal. With the POD my sound is not cutting through well at all.

I’ve got a problem with my acoustic guitar. When you tap the 10th fret of every string, or an higher frat, you get a really ugly sound, like it’s is a lot of notes at the same time and they are not in tune. When you go from the 10th fret and down it gets better, and when you go up it gets worse. If you just play the string you don’t hear the ugly sound, it’s normal. It just happens when you tap the string. It happens to all the string. Anyone know what’s wrong, and is it possible to repair?

You should look at the Delta Bass Amps, they have two channels. So for example you can have an acoustic set up on one channel and an electric in the other with your preferred eq and fx settings. You also get a footswitch with them. Cheaper and better than a marshall and not a kick in the arse off some Ampegs cheers.

Thanks! *** A quick check at the Rickenbacker Bass Models page (http://personal.nbnet.nb.ca/mccorp/axtbassarticle2.html) reveals that RIC did not produce a bass with active pickups, so you have a "home-made" circuit. It’s unfortunate that the person who did this modification did not pass along a diagram of the circuit. You may want to take it to a good, reputable, and experienced repair shop and get a quote on the repair. If I can find a schematic for a build-it-yourself active bass cicuit, I’ll post an update here.

the neck has probably moved due to exposure to heat or cold. you’ll have to adjust the truss rod by the tuning pegs, move it away from the strings. the buzzing is when the strings vibrate against the frets. or take to local music shop and ask…. G

You will need to adjust the truss rod using a socket set. turn it anti-clockwise but only slightly then try.

They do indeed use Grover tuners and are made from good woods(no laminates) I am very pleased with mine. I bought mine brand new at Guitar Center in Marietta, GA for about $200. The salesman told me they are made right down the road from Washburn I don’t know how true this is but it plays very similar to one. I think you got a steal if you play it. If it feels good and sounds good who cares what kind it is.

i just installed some sperzel locking tuners on my les paul, and im not sure if they are working right. when i tighten the locks, they dont go all the way in. does this stop the strings from locking, or did i install them wrong?

        Guest

yeah, i think what might have happened was, with sperzles they have a wider peg hole size than other guitars. they prolly need to be bored out with a larger bit so that the tuner fits in perfectly. go to a luthier or your local guitar guy to get this fixed cause they will have the correct boring tools and knowlege on where to place the tueners.

My son has begun guitar lessons with a 1/2 size classical guitar. I’ve decided I would like to buy a guitar for myself, but I have no idea what to look for, or what type I might like. I don’t want to spend more than $200.00, and I’m not sure what kind of guitar I want, classical or acoustic – or even what the difference in them is besides the strings. ANY advice anyone might have either what guitars they recommend, or what guitars are a definite no no, it would be very much appreciated!! Thank you!

Yamaha makes affordable great classical guitars. I have had one for over 10 years that cost $180.00 and sounds better than several I bought later on for 4 and 5 thousand. Steel string guitars are a bit limited because they channel one towards pop music. With a nylon string guitar you can do anything and they are far more comfortable to the body and fingers. If you can play a classical guitar you can play any guitar. Good Luck.

Takamine is good but the cheaper version is Jasmine. Ovation is good too,but the lower budget is Applause, all of which are good but not "Classical" because they do not feature nylon strings.

umm, i started out with a classical but i didnt really start to enjoy guitar until i got an acoustic. they are a lot more vesatile, but it all depend on what kind of music you want to play. the only thing you can do with a classical is classical and spanish music, but on the other hand… an acoustic can do pop, rock, oldies, folk. my advice get an acoustic with steel strings.

If your Kahler trem is anything like mine, and there is no routing in the back of the body of your guitar, then no, you can’t put in a floyd rose without routing the body. as for a replacment Kahler, I’m not sure.

As you can see, I never found out very much when I originally bought it. 🙂 Here is a pic: <img src="http://photo.redtailboa.org/albums/album95/guitar1.jpg"> thanks!! (I’m not posting here to try to sell, just to try to get info, I hope that’s ok)

I’d like to purchase a Martin Backpacker guitar but I don’t want to pay more than $50.00 for it. I want this guitar mainly for it’s portability rather than it’s sound. I’m not to worried about the condition of the guitar given the price I’m looking for as long as it’s all in one piece.

I’m in the same boat you are in. I got a Fender Stratocaster with a Floyd Rose Tremolo for Christmas. I broke a string the other day and had to change them today. Changing them was the easy part, the real challenge is when you have to tune it and keep it there. Good luck

If you want good sound and all the effects you ever dreamed about get a Darla sound card and a CD burner put in in a good computer ans add software, until you do you will never be happy with the final results!!!.

: what type of guitar does eddie vah halen primarily use Eddie uses an Peavey EVH Wolfgang which he primarily designed and named after his son. The guitar came out around 1997 and is still in production. I have a 1997 EVH Wolfgang in sunburst with a quilt top and it has the Floyd Rose double locking tremelo and the D-Tuna, which Eddie designed. I played Gibsons for years, but they sure don’t touch this one! guitarnut37

From what I understand Eddie V. uses make-shift guitars slapped together from spare parts(i.e Van Halen 1-4).On most of them he uses the Seymore Duncan SH-5 custom pickup. The key to his sound is really his amps, effects and mixing!

man, i don’t know. he’s got his own customized guitar. i think it might be a souped-up fender or somethin. i know he’s got the "d-tuna" hooked up to the low e-string, and it definately is a double-locking trem of some sort. i’ll check into it more.

I have buy a Godin Multiac Grand Concert SA and when i use it with my synthesizer Roland GR-1 i have this problem: When i play the note C(string 2 first fret), 2 seconds later the same note play but one octave above. When i play the same note C on the string 4 the note mute very quickly. These effects are random. I have play the guitar at the store on a Roland GR-33 syntheziser and the problem is always there. The salesman tell me that is normal! Anybody have this guitar or another godin nylon string? if yes, do you have the same problem? Excuse my english!

Well , I must say that i have been playing fender for 10 years and none guitar sound as sweet as mine specially playing the Blues. But This is of course a matter of music style mainly. I would love to have a Gibson LP but i can not afford that. At this point I agree with you they should be cheaper. But I can’t dare considering them crap at all. I bought one off ebay for $145 (in ‘perfect’ condition), and acoustically I think it sounds awful (lows suck… but of course it’s so shallow), plugged it sounds ok (better than the teleacoustic though), but I would get the ovation, the AE-100 dosen’t sound that much better but for the price think it’s a better guitar. The workmanship looks pretty poor (binding etc) and no pick guard… so even though the finish was perfect when I got it… it’s now scratched to hell. I just keep it on the boat now… figure if it falls in the water it will float. : Buying my first guitar was tempted to but a Rogue AE-100 then found the Stratacoustic, I like the looks but is that a good enough reason to pay the extra dollars? what i use best for the body of my guitars is meguiars,(car polish), which is the best preferably, dont use the abrasive type with graniels, but the pure liquid types, doing this, rub some on the body and or pickguard, and rub until it shines, now what i use for metal is SIMICHROME POLISH, available at hardware stores, this takes any tarnish off of metal, and wont hurt the finish, USE SPARINGLY! but anyways, i hope i helped… ~Willy

ernie ball polish or dr. duck’s axwax – works awesome and can go on the whole guitar. USE A SOFT CLOTH, or you will get millions of tiny little hairline scratches all over the body. wipe it on, let it dry and rub it down.

IT WILL HANDLE AN AMPLIFIER OF UP TO 300W OUTPUT POWER. PLUGGING YOUR 15W AMP INTO A 300W CAB IS NOT GOING TO MAKE YOUR AMP ANY LOUDER, ALTHOUGH IT WILL MOVE MORE AIR. Thats kinda of a rhetorical question… basically modes are scales that aren’t related to the key of the root, ie. a C Dorian is not in the key of C, here are how I use some (that I can think of right now): Dorian – Heavy rock (ex: E Dorian over Em-D-A chord progression) Phrygian – Fusion/funk (C Phrygian over Cm7-Dbmaj7 chords) Lydian – Generally for minor keys Ionian – I like with swing stuff Aeolian – Metal Mixolydian – I use/mix with major pentaonic Well thats my 2 cents worth, there is alot of mode info on the web so search and you will find. : "when" do i use which mode? like…under what circumstances is a mixolydian scale used? phrygian? the rest? : thanks! : corbin

I have found that the only way a good maiden style sound can be achieved is with a strat style guitar played through an overdriven stack like a marshall or peavey. I have tried with similar type equipment and have only managed to get a good metallica / megadeth sound and it sucked at higher volumes. a 100 watt marshall stack should get close enough. P.S. Having a seymour duncan hot rails pickup triples the chance of getting the sound.

At last I’ve saved enough to buy a new tube amp for my ’52 reissue telecaster. My budget is around 1400$ max,and the wattage I need is not so high. I play country, rock, hard rock, worship,so I need a pure warm clean sound and a great sustaining distorsion too. I could try with a ’65 reissue Deluxe Reverb(here in Italy it costs 950$),even if I saw that the second channel is a vibrato and not a drive channel, and I would need an additional pedal for distorsion. What do you say? Today I tried some amps in a guitar shop and was very well impressed by a Fender Prosonic and a Mesa-Boogie DC3,but if someone else can tell me even more about my amp search I’ll be very happy and grateful. well, it’s an ok idea, but good old-fashioned playing on knee works fine. i don’t really get headaches or muscle pains when i play – if you did, you must be playing kinda weird.

The situation is same in the neighbour countries, including Austria. The big(?) Musik-Produktiv wanna prepay too. I don’t wanna buy an axe without I have a try. Pls help me, where can I find this guitar in Central Europe, near Hungary ? Many thanks if you can help me.

Is there any difference between a 1960 reissue Amercian Fender Strat and your average strat you find, besides looks? I put a 60 reissue in the lay-a-way, it was $535 when a regular strat was like $350, am I paying an extra $200 for looks alone? Would it had been smarter just to get a Les Paul Jr since theirs only like a $70 price difference? Thanks for the help.

DOES’NT MATTER WHICH ONE YOU BOUGHT— IN A SHORT TIME THE PICKUP MAGNETS AND HARDWARE WILL START TO RUST, THE NECK WILL TWEAK AND YOU WILL EXPERIENCE STRANGE STRING BUZZING. YOU CAN, HOWEVER, BUY A USED AMERICAN VINTAGE SERIES ’62 REISSUE FOR BETWEEN 600.00– 8OO.OO. IT,S WORTH THE EXTRA CASH AND WILL RETAIN A GOOD TRADE IN VALUE–YOU WILL LOOSE YOUR ASS TRYING TO TRADE IN A CHEAPO STRAT INPORT.

its funny…My dad was so fond of my insanity to the music he bought me a Fender Strat – American made…These are the expensive once ure talkin about… the cheaper ones are made in Chine, Korea…basically no difference, its because the work in America is more expensive, and the other countries its cheap to make…but u can feel the difference if u are into it… I played a Strat – exact copy…don remember where it was made, though, but after i tried american – fuck – i cant explane the joy…its a perfect being… well thats my opinion…me mom never understood why spent 200 bucks more on the same thing….but if u do not give a damn what it has on the back of it u better of with the cheaper one….but american are more valuable and with time they become collectibles, their value increasses – i ve seen on the inet strats for over two thousend bucks – VINTAGE :))) hope this helps…

A Fender Twin or a Roland JC-120 is all you need to rock an auditorium! Marshall’s are cool, but Twins(combo)have a warmer, beefier sound.JC-120’s tend to be kinda bright,so watch the Treble level. My Twins and I have sliced and diced many auditoriums! Good Luck

personaly i realy dont like marshal heads for metal, stick with mesa and laney. EMG 81 is the ultimate metal pickup. If you want that killer metal sound, get a graphic EQ, and turn down the 400hz band pretty much all the way, and take a fair chunk out of the mid on your amp too.

I just bought an EMG-81. I need to get some hardware before I can install it. I am looking for the right sound and read that Metallica and Slayer use EMG, so without trying out one out I just bought it. I play on a Fender amp through a Boss GT-6 Effects Processor. I don’t quite understand my technological stuff yet. Am I going to be able to get a good sound out of the EMG-81 with the gear I have?

Stay away from the Duncan Invaders! They tend to have too much bottom and turn to mush at high volumes. Invaders have too much output. I would suggest looking into the Carvin M22V…not the M22SD.Good tone and awesome power for a passive pickup. Good Luck

this is a highly debatable subject which could take manymanymany pages to answer/..:)…..it depends on the listener really for tonal preferences-but basically-marshall jcm 800’s–mesa dual/triple recto’s/diezel:)/ and i’ve heard alot of good things about the laney vh100r head…….

Well, what sort of music are you in to? For metal – Ibanez, Jackson, ESP, B.C. Rich, Washburn, and Les Pauls all work great. A bit spendy though. If you’re going for a Jimi Hendix, Eddie Van Halen, or bluesy type – get a "super" Fender Strat – like a "Stagemaster Series". Fenders usually work great for anything other than metal, but you can never go wrong with a Les Paul!

he forgot to tell you that les pauls are a pain in the ass to keep in tune-go with a double locking ibanez with an "edge" tremolo if you can afford it-if not, then just get the cheapest one you can…:)

the biggest influence on rock today,huh?-HAHAHAHAHAHAthat shows me how much you know what the hell your talking about…i don’t guess you’ve ever heard of any little ole’ bands by the names of "black sabbath", or "judas priest",or maybe "led zeppelin",how’bout"the yardbirds"….ever hear of jimi hendrix?,stevie ray vaughn?,joe satriani?,eddie van halen?…..I find it quite hilarious that people fail to see the "convinient comercialism" in ALL of metallicas’ songs…they all have the same sound. as far as the state of music these days-i don’t think there’s a damn thing wrong…unless the only place you know where to find good new music is the radio and mtv/vh1…then,yeah-yur screwed…. napster sure was a good place to try out all kinds of demos and single songs of new bands before you went out and bought thier cd….but METALLICA themselves took the initiative-yes NOT thier record company bosses- but the BOYS THEMSELVES played the key role in shutting that down-god forbid we get ANYTHING without paying 20 dollars FUCK METALLICA-and as i said before-if i ever see any of thier little bitch asses anywhere they’re goin’ to the hospital…… and for the record-i’m 28-not 14,and have been playing music for 18 years.

Go ahead and "kick their asses" when you get the chance, man. I’m sure they will yeild to yours almighty, for surely when they see you they will tremble in fear of the ultimate guitar god. you’re wrong man! other bands like Korn, LimpBizkit, Machine Head,…they screw it up at the very beginning… Metallica was very productive more than 15 years. In each of their first 5 albums you can hear progress (… none of the new "star-bands" can’t record an album like justice for all (and it’s 11 years old). Let me hear you! They had their time and they were No1. I also don’t like what they did in past few years….but who lives forever….. If that is what you think about Metallica you really don’t know much about their music. Try to learn some riffs and you’ll find the magic….and the tehnical skills.

Use scales…study the music theory….each chord choresponds to a scale? for example C major has three notes C(root) A, E. but these arent the only notes that sound good at it – the full scale of ’em (C,D,E,F,G,A,B) will sound…. another ex – C miner (Cm) – C(root) Eb, G….but u can play all the scale too, whish is C, D, Eb, F, G, Ab, Bb…. practice…usually u and a chord with a note that corresponds to both the last chord and the one to come…. welll – thats the basis of solo….but u can skip this crap and simply practice on the fretboard… 🙂 but to be good, theory is essential…

Hey man,get the Pentatonic scales down forward and backward "which are really easy" and you will be able to progress from there.Simple as they are ,many cool licks can be derived from that scale.I started with those scales and have been able to really build upon them since I learned the " actual " notes in that scale and the sympathetic ones and, the ones that can be slid "to" or "from" from there.Hope this will inspire you some,,,good luck.Keep the tone slightly overdriven and warm and it will come to you.

I wouldnt paint them either… but if you do use a metallic (has metallic ‘particles’ in it) spray, and if the pickups are nickel you can have them photoetched… don’t know if it works on chrome though. : I HAVE A BLACK GUITAR WITH CHROME PICKUPS, I’D LIKE TO COVER THE PICKUPS OR PAINT A DESIGN ON THEM. THEIR HUMBUCKERS, BUT I DON’T KNOW IF IT WILL AFFECT THE SOUND. GOOD IDEA OR BAD IDEA?

I think it’s a bad idea – paint won’t stick. It also might affect the humbucker pickups if you get any on the magnetic recievers. I would stick with the ones you have, or buy some new ones all together.

your probably a little shit. you probably cant even lift more than 100 pounds. MetallicA could kick your ass. Most of the guys i know that rip on MetallicA are little computer nerd pussies, Standing less than six foot with no muscle what so ever. MetallicA has had more hot pussy then youll ever have in your life. If your lucky u might get somthing average once in your life. MetallicA is awesome. Go to college and make some money and then maybe you can afford to purchase albums and enjoy a much better sounding audio format. Napster sucks anyways. And you cant play guitar that well, otherwise you would be in a band and have a name. Youll never be anything in life. Im curious as to what u listen to.

hehehe- you crack me up, man. First of all, sure you can get on the internet and claim that you can play any metallica song through and through, but in reality you probably can’t; I’m sure you can’t. Second of all, this is a guitar discussion forum, not a band commentary. Don’t ever disgrace the name of metallica again asshole.

ahem you are talking about the biggest single influence on metal music the world has ever seen. you say you can play all of there song, big woop, many people can. does it realy mattter if they are underground or mainstream? no. good music is good music, and these guys play good music. any true guitarist on this site will be sick to shit of little try-hard 14 year old wanna-be guitarists such as yourself posting blatant shit on this site, about one of the greatest bands to ever. metallica have long been bought out, theres no question there, but you are attacking the musicians. and its because of little fuckheads like you that the qualitly of music these days has gone down the drain. if you want to put the blame for metallica’s "greed" on someone, remember that there are many greedy executives, managers and promoters. dont attck the music or the musicians, or soon you will find yourself with nothing to criticize

If you own a Strat Ultra you own one of the finest and most tonally complex Strats ever produced by Fender. The pickups, tone controls, bridge, and even the 5-way selector switch are not the same as on any other model Strat. The bridge adjustment that you are referring to (ie – string length for intonation) is made by loosening the saddle locking screw which is on the UNDERSIDE of the bridge and can be accessed through the tremelo route from the back of the guitar. All you need to do is remove the cover plate from the tremelo cavity and loosen the hex head screws with the same allen wrench that locks the strings in place. Just remember the Ultr is NOT an ordinary Strat!

The best way to achieve a really clean sound, turn the treble of your amp halfway down (12 o’clock),bring the midrange and bass all the way up, and go heavy on the compression. I get a pretty good sound from my Zoom 505. It has a great compressor, and EQ you can tweak to get the right sound. Good luck.

I’ve had one for a couple of months now that I got from a local music store clearance sale, I got it for $142, but I have no idea what price range it goes for new. Boss doesn’t even have it on their website, so there isn’t a whole lot of info about it anywhere…but trust me, it’s low priced and worth the deal ten fold!!! I am a totaly tech nerd and I spend 6-7 hours at a time, usually all night messing with this unit! It never gets boring, it’s simple to use and EXTREMELY versitile. If you like boss effect pedals, you’ll love this unit! It offers even more control than most of the individual stomp boxes themselves. great investment overall! Cheers!

re: ES-125 What is the serial number (this will confirm vintage)? What kind of shape is it in? All original? Assuming in very good shape and late 50’s, early 60’s vintage with all original (no replacement parts), I’d estimate it is worth about 600-700 USD. Obviously, with more wear and tear the price would go down accordingly. Are you interested in selling this guitar? If so, contact me at this email address with some pictures of the guitar, etc. Regards, David R. O’Hearn [email protected] : I need to find out how much an ES 125 Gibson Electric Archtop is worth. Your guitar, if in good condition, is worth a MINIMUM of $750. I have seen them go for as much as $1,200 and saw one in a shop in NYC priced at $999.00 with a neck problem that made it almost unusable. I hope you realize that anyone who offers to buy it from you is not reliable for pricing information. I already have mine, check Google.com for more reliable sources. Good luck.

I have a Fender Squier Affinity Strat that I recently won. I have been doing some research on the value of it. I have noticed in all the descriptions and in photos of this guitar, there are 21 frets. My guitar has 22 frets. Do I own a real good knock-off of an original or has Fender shanged the designs?

Interesting. I have the same exact guitar – mine has 21. You might want to check that out. I know fender hasn’t changed their designs recently – maybe you got a special edition. Who knows?

Hi Dennis and Joe! I know that the Lyon & Healy Co. Who made George Washburn guitars had a line of brands they made around 1883-1920? One of the models which was second only to the Washburn line was called American conservitory and made from student to semi pro model guitars and mandolins. Lyon & Healy made a line of these guitars in 1904 which was replaced by the "College" line till around 1908 when they returned to the Lakeside,Jupiter, and American Conservitory lines of student instruments. The post 1928 instruments were made by several other makers Stewert,Regal, and others however some of the American conservitory double neck models were made by Regal.

Hey guys, u must be sick and tired of giving guitar advice to annoying, clueless newbies like me, but I really need your help! I have been playing on an accoustic for a while, and I’ve decided that it’s finally time to proceed to the next level in the guitar world- electric. I’m probably willing to spend up to around $600 on a guitar alone-I don’t want something dodgy, but I don’t want something too expensive. I’m kinda lost when it comes to choosing guitars, and I don’t want to be taken advantage of by dodgy salespeople who just want money. Does the model of the guitar greatly affect its sound? I want something versatile, good quality, and nice to look at at the same time. Any suggestions?

Well it’s mostly based upon the type of music your going to play, for example when your going to play hard rock/metal i advice to buy a guitar with two humbucker pickups like a gibson/ibanez/bc rich or jackson/esp (but they are a bit more expensive) i’ve youre thinking a bit more pop like, i would try to find something like a fender or maybee a good squier (by fender). and yes the type of guitar is very important to the sound but something almost as important as the guitar is the amp/effects that you use. so i advice you to realy think about what you want before you buy anything (i can tell you it’s fustrating to buy a guitar and after two weeks deciding it sucks ass)(i know) bye!

ever since metallica used clean tones, it was always from a roland jc-120 for james, and an ada mp1 for kirk. Now, james uses the jc-120 head and triaxis live for clean tones. Kirk uses just the triaxis for his live clean tone. in the studio, they use many many amps for clean tones…hope this helps.

The angles at the headstock and TOM bridge coupled with the 24.75" scale and neck/body angle will pretty much prevent the two from ever playing alike. There is also some difference introduces between the feel of a bolt-ont neck and that of a set-neck. Sorry dude.

Hi there. I’v got opportunity to touch an electric guitar and its sound rather surprised me : it sounded like ordinary accoustic guitar. Well, it was plugged to an ampli directly, with no effects. So I asked myself, how to get Mike Oldfield-ish typical electric sound? It depends on guitar or effects? What effect can do that sound? Thanx helping a newbie.

well i don’t know what type of amp you use cause some amp’s have a build in overdrive/distortion to give you already some extra sound as goes for a reverb. But when you want some real effects like a flanger or a chorus you’l probably have to buy a fx panel.

Can anyone tell me how to install this Badass style bridge? It’s one of the ones that string in from underneith the bridge so you don’t have to have a thru-body bridge or a two-piece bridge and tailpiece. Anyway, I thought it’d be so simple, just bolt it on there. But there are two bolts and two other metal pieces that the bolts screw into, what are they for? I mean, the bridge would be too high off the body if I had them against it. What do I do?

        Guest

have a similair wrap around bridge.. you have a set of bushings that are like nuts.. and the bolts which yeah are bolts.. you take a drill, a drill press is prefered because its a guaranted perpendicular whole.. and drill wholes that fit the bushings.. plop the bushings in.. MAKE SURE THEY DONT SLIDE OUT.. if they do your screwed and you need to fill the wholes.. you need a nice tight fit. and then you screw the bolts in and slide your bridge on.. look at a bronze series warlock or mockingbird they have a very similar setup as the wrap around badass bridge

Yes! You have heard of Ted Nugent haven’t you. Until Damn Yankees, Ted’s instrument of choice was the Gibson Byrdland. A jazz guitar of all things. John Lennon’s favorite guitar from the end of the Beatles until death was his Epiphone Casino. George Harrison had on as well. As did Keith Richards at one pint with the Stones. I suppose if I really thought about it I could think of many more rock muscians who utilize and or prefer the hollow body. As for wanting to stop the feed back. Why on earthe would you do that? Feedback is your friend. Embrace it. Learn to utilize it. Jimi Hendrix and Ted Nugent both based early careers on that.

I’m trying to find out what the difference is (inches) between poles on a Regular Spacing and a F Spacing pickup. F Spacing is for bridges that are 2.1 in. (53 mm) or larger. Most standard pickups are 2 in measuring across the poles pieces. : Thanks

I am sick to death about my Tele. My own fault. It was fixed, and I broke it. I got a "Butterscotch" from a guy as payment for a job I did. For years, I loved playing rhythm on it. Couldn’t play lead on it because of those skinny low frets and the heavily lacquered maple neck/fretboard. It has one of those ASAT PU’s in rhe neck with the adjustable hex-nut pole-pieces. Never was crazy about the sound of that neck PU but I lived with it. Last summe I found a local luthier who said he could make me a new neck with a rosewood fretboard which I prefer. I also wanted a thicker neck with jumbo frets. Then I decided to have him refinish it as well. Last but not least, I ordered a set of Bill Lawrence PU’s because I needed to stop the buzz and the Lawrences are very quiet. When I got the guitar back from the luthier (and the $500 invoice) I almost died. The neck was thick alright – more like a baseball bat. Couldn’t even get a capo on it. The luthier refused to do any more for me unless I paid more money. So, I put the old neck back on and the original PU’s back in thinking all would be well. Wrong. The guitar absolutely sucks. The high E string is inaudible. It feels and sounds terrible. One thing I am not sure of and that is the mounting of the bridge PU to the bridge-plate. I’m told that this is a critical issue in the sound of a Tele. I re-mounted the original PU to the plate using machine screws and nuts – no rubber bushings as stand-offs, just bolted it tight. The height seems okay, but the high E string is totally inaudible and the overall sound is ungodly tinny. HELP!! Should I just burn this thing?

Dude.Save yourself a shit-load of money! Try the Ibanez Smash-box(SM-7)and tweak your amp.I LOVE MINE! Somtimes I use a Graphic e.q. pedal with it. The Dan Electro Fab Tone has too much gain and volume for live playing. But in a controlled environment…it’s the MEANEST dist.box under $100. No bullshit! Jeckyll and Hydes are very good, but kinda expensive. I use a Twin Reverb…so my Smash-Box always kicks-butt! My opinion

Hi there, Question about Sperzel (Trimlok) tuners. Does anyone know if they are reversable? Meaning can you swap the gear to the other side. I have one apart, and it appears they might be, but I want to know if anyone has done this, or if it can be done. Thanks in advance ~Ken

Sorry, I don’t have a follow up for a "b-type" fender, I know nothing of the sort. But there is still this comment out there that Metallica is so hated. This is not the case; Metallica is the best there is to offer. One must realize comments like this come from people who are both ignorant and stupid. DON’T GO TO THEIR SHOWS OR BUY ANY OF THEIR MERCHANDISE IF YOU CAN"T AFFORD IT, IDIOT! IF YOU HATE THEM SO, WHY WOULD YOU BRING IT UP? Sorry, this has turned more into a follow-up for this NapAttacK character.

yeah napattak shut the hell up, we got no place for dickheads like you here. metallica have been bought out, not sold out, and anyone who thinks ootherwise has no idea about what actualy happens. A b-bender is a device which sits in the body of the guitar, and when used it bends the b-string up a whole tone. it is usualy activated by a lever on the strap, so that you push down onthe neck and the b-string bends. they are very expensive, only look at one if your serios about country/blues playing

yes- a"b-type fender" is a type of guitar you use if you feel that you may have -somewhere along the way-turned into a wealthy upper class greedy little snob who no longer cares about anything but how many MORE millions of dollars you can get from poor working class peasents who – in your opinion- should probably be saving thier money for food and rent

Hi! I play a block of wood also known as a Squier Strat, and I left it in the car last week (it wouldn’t fit on the plane). It was kinda cold while I was gone. Now I’m back, and the strings are very buzzy. What happened? Also, what do I need to do to fix it? Would appreciate your help, thanks! mike

i would guess the neck has moved- do the strings touch the fretboard more than they used to do? this would cause them to buzz in the same way that if you hit the bass strings hard. i would think you need to adjust the truss rod in the back of the guitar- at the end by tuning pegs. i’m not too sure about this- take it to your local guitar shop or get a friend to help… its amazing how much damage heat or coldness can do to guitars! I have been gone for six months and I forgot to take the strings off my guitar. Now the strings are close to the frets at the top of the neck and about half an inch off the frets closer to the body of my guitar. It is an Ovation. How can I fix this. Will oiling the neck and slowly adjusting the allen rod in the neck work?

I wanto to learn Gilmour’s solo from Comfortably Numb. Usually I don’t like to copy other guitarists’ solos note for note but certain songs, such as this one and others e.g. Stairway to heaven, Honky Tonk Women seem to lose something if the guy covering it does his own solo even if the new solo is hot and blistering and better that the original. I’d like to find out what setup Gilmore used (amps/guitar/pups/pedals etc) when he recorded it so I can get as close as possible to that spine tingleing tone he achieves. I’d appreciate it if someone could put me onto a site which has this info. Thanks.

I dont play blues – Im into classical and metal but I found something I thought is so good for playing blues I should tell people about it. Ive been playing the guitar with 4 strings tuned to fifth intervals like the violin – I tune mine to AEBF# ( the low A is the same as the A string on a "normal" guitar – the F# is 2 1/2 steps above the high E on the high E string at the 24th fret – I was using 5 strings tuned to DAEBF# but I like 4 strings for reasons that would take too long to explain here – alot of people use 6 strings tuned CGDAEG – thats called "new standard tuning" – Robert Fripp has been using that for alot of years ) – I like the 4 note per string diatonic scales cuz you can use alternate with inside string changes most of the time, you can still do 3 note patterns with position changing – their hard to play straight up and down the strings but their good for music cuz they make alot of options for fingerings, and I like the 2 note per string arpeggio fingerings cuz I can play them with hammer ons and pull offs. I started thinking maybe blues players would like this alot cuz you get 3 note per string pentatonic scales in each position that are easier to play fast than the 2 note per string fingerings in standard tuning and you can do wide vibrato on the highest string by pulling down instead of pushing up if you use only 4 or 5 strings and leave the high E place empty cuz you can use 4 strings and get almost as many notes as the guitar usually has or you can use 5 strings and have more notes than the guitar usually has. I like that cuz I can imitate a violin more with easy vibrato on every note – the violin is my favorite instrument – so its like a toy violin thats easier to play fast! I play 24 fret guitars so I can also tune that to EBF#C# and I have all of the same notes a fender stratocaster has if I play with other people. Its not as good for large chords though ( ? – I guess its not good for chords – I havent tried to play chords that way much cuz I dont usually play chords ) – not everyone would like it. And some keys are easier to play in than others ( like the violin ). Those are the only 2 "bad" things I know of about it right now.

I thought its hard to play chords that way and then I found this – http://www.geocities.com/xulfrepus/folder/guitar.html – on the top right theres a place to choose many different tunings and they have CGDAEG ( new standard tuning ) and you can choose many different chords, keys, and positions.

I was on Musician’s Friend and saw models from Dean, Rogue, Takamine, and Ibanez. I know Takamine and Ibanez would offer solid quality and I don’t mind spending a bit more. But would I get comparable quality from a Dean or a Rogue? (I was especially the looking at the Dean Performance model). Any other names I should consider?

metalica have to be the worse band ive heard. The lead singer can’t sing and he CAN’T play for his life. All in all USA guitarists lick ass.

Ok, I have got to rip on you so bad, dude. First of all, you spelled Metallica WRONG, and second of all you made the cursed statement that Metallica sucks. The lead singer is the best out there – believe me, you couldn’t match his skill, man. And WTF do you mean about USA guitarists being the best? James, Kirk, Lars, and Newsted are USA born and bred. Fuck off asshole, and keep your comments to yourself. This is a guitar discussion forum, not a band commentary.

For £25 more they now have upgraded the range with very nice necks and better tuners. I cannot argue with the value for money – everything can be upgraded – only the switch was a priority.

K I have been playing guitar now for about 7 years since i was 10. Im playin a Paul Reed Smith now but just last year my brother got the exact same guitar you are referring to for about the same price. It is a real sweet lookin guitar, and plays pretty well too. I have played a Gibson Les Paul and obviously the quality does not compare. But it is definatley a good guitar. I also played a few Les Paul replica’s and of the two or three Ive tried this is one of the best. Its well worth the money if you are a begginer or even just a novice. Definatly giv it the thumbs up !!! L8r !!!

The guitar costs about £375-£400 new, used about £250. in my opinion its really a great guitar. i reviewed mine on Harmony database. however if you want a lefty it will be much harder to find. ive never seen a blue acoustic but have seen many blue electro acoustics. why do you want it blue anyways?

Hey all. I started learning guitar from books and an old acoustic.I decided I want to invest in an electric guitar. Based on advice from various people, I figure I want to start out with a strat. Now, being as clueless as I am, I can’t figure out the difference between a US strat and a Mex. Are they really that different? Also, are there any reliable copies that are of decent quality? A Yamaha, for example. Thanks for reading!

If you’ve found out that you like playing the guitar, and you are sure that you wanna do it for a long time, and in addition got the money, buy a Usa made Strat. I promise you will never regret spending a lot of money in a guitar. It’s really just an investment, and you can sell the Usa made guitar for more than the copies, so you won’t loos anything really. But most important you will get a much better guitar to play, and a better sound too. The Mexicans are OK, if you’re not that rich. Never buy a asian copy. They’re all crap (mostly). : Hey all. : I started learning guitar from books and an old acoustic.I decided I want to invest in an electric guitar. : Based on advice from various people, I figure I want to start out with a strat. I have an Asbury electric guitar. Have had it for over 19 years. It was my first electric and it still gets played from time to time as my “beater”. Great guitar for the money – it cost less than 150 us in ’92 or so and its still humming with some minor maintenance. Definitely doesn’t hold a candle to my Fenders but when I’m playing in a garage or a basement or outside or basically anywhere I don’t want to bring my good stuff, this guitar gets the job done. Not sure if I answered any of your questions, but I enjoyed talking about my “first love”. Haha

I bouht it about 12 years ago or so. I don’t know who the manufacturer is, as it’s name does not appear on the instrument. It really is just an inexpensive guitar that is made in Korea. Still plays and sounds pretty good though.

Hi! Recently I’ve changed my guitar strings, but after I did that, my floyd rose stood in a unusual position. It is "floating", but to make myself clear, i’ll say that the angle between floyd rose and guitar neck it’s not 0 degrees, how it’s normal, but it makes an angle, let’s say, by 40 degrees. Ok, how do I modify my set up? BTW, is there a site that can explain me how electric guitar is made? And how to "set up" a guitar? Thank you!

: Hi! : Recently I’ve changed my guitar strings, but after I did that, my floyd rose stood in a unusual position. : It is "floating", but to make myself clear, i’ll say that the angle between floyd rose and guitar neck it’s not 0 degrees, how it’s normal, but it makes an angle, let’s say, by 40 degrees. : Ok, how do I modify my set up? : BTW, is there a site that can explain me how electric guitar is made? And how to "set up" a guitar? : Thank you! Tech Tips 3/9/2001 A Quick Help Guide to Setting up your Floyd Rose Tremolo So, you finally decided to change those old nasty strings. But the reason the strings are nasty is because you’re not sure how to work on the tremolo. First things first, relax. Setting up your tremolo is simple if you learn the principles involved. To level the tremolo to the body, adjust the spring tension. To adjust the string height (action), adjust the tremolo studs. And adjust the intonation by moving the saddle backward or forward. You’ll need the following tools: 3 millimeter Allen wrench, 2 millimeter Allen wrench, phillips head screwdriver, wire cutters, a toothbrush and two wedges (I use a #2 pencil wrapped in electrical tape and a 9 volt wrapped in electrical tape). (photo) Some models use other size wrenches so be sure to use the proper sized wrench to eliminate stripping the heads out. Unlock the locknut and remove the clamps and screws. Use the tremolo arm to raise the tremolo and place the wedge (battery) in between the tremolo and the tremolo recess cavity to hold the tremolo while you’re working. (Note: There are some products today that are made specifically for this task.) Remove the tremolo arm, as it will not be needed for a while. The tremolo should be at an angle, but not dramatically (about 15 to 25 degrees) and the strings should be a bit looser. (photo) Detune the strings enough so they don’t "ring out". Now loosen the string lock screws in the rear of the tremolo and remove the strings. (photo) Next, "fingertighten" the string lock screws so the string lock blocks don’t disappear while you are working. Now is the time to do some maintenance so get out an old toothbrush to clean out the funk. Get that stuff’s that been growing on your guitar while you’ve been playing. Use a stiff toothbrush to clean the tremolo. (photo) If you have household type oil, use it to lubricate the tremolo screws. The stuff that’s growing on the fretboard needs to be cleaned as well. (photo) For that I use my Dremel with the scrub-brush tool set on 2500rpm. If you don’t have a Dremel, use a strong toothbrush with a bit of fretboard cleaner, but don’t scrape it off as you can scratch the fretboard and the fret. After the fretboard has been cleaned you should condition it to keep it from drying out which would let it shrink and crack. (photo) Your local dealer should have fretboard oil available. If there is no oil available, you can use baby oil, but only in a pinch. Wipe the oil on and let it set for a minute then wipe it dry. You’re ready to put it back together so get out the new strings and cut the ball end off just above the wrapping. (photo) The extra winding will affect the intonation. After you’ve cut the ball ends off, loosen the string lock screws and lock the string into the saddle. Be careful not to over tighten the screw as this will strip the screw and possibly break the saddle.(photo) Insert the strings into the machine heads (tuners) and bring them up to partial pitch. Replace the wedge (battery) with the wedge (pencil). (photo) Place the wedge (pencil) between the tremolo and the tremolo cavity being sure to keep the tremolo angled with the body of the guitar. (photo) Tune the strings to pitch. The strings will continue to stretch for a bit so you will have to repeatedly check the pitch. If the tremolo has started to pull up from the body, (photo) detune the strings about a step or two and replace the wedge. (photo) Turn the guitar over and remove the tremolo cavity cover. The two screws adjust the spring tension and that adjusts the string tension. (photo) Simple. Tighten the screws evenly depending on the degree the tremolo has pulled up. (If you’re using .008 or .009 gauge strings, use 2 to 3 springs. If you’re using heavier strings, use more springs. (Experiment until you get the right feel for how you play) Turn the guitar over and retune with the wedge in place, if the strings are in tune and the wedge is still snug, simply turn the guitar over and loosen the two screws a bit. Check the wedge, it should slip out easily. The tremolo should still remain flush with the body and the strings should be in relative tune. If not, repeat the process. Adjust the fine tuners so that you have equal distance of travel and replace the locknut clamps and screws. The locknut clamps have arches on them; these arches should run parallel with the strings. Stretch the strings out using your thumb and forefinger in a pinching motion over the twelfth fret area. Repeat this three to four times but no too hard as you can break the strings and stretch them too far and affect the intonation. (photo) Unlock the locknut and retune the strings to pitch. Now you’re ready to adjust the string height (action). (photo) Using the proper wrench, adjust the tremolo studs depending on the action you want. (photo) Keep in mind that the lower you go, the more tone and sustain you lose and the more fret buzz you get. So experiment until you find the right feel. Here’s a trick I use for the dropped D tuning. Before I lock the locknut, I tune the fine tuner all the way to the baseplate and retune the string to E. Then I just detune the fine tuner and it’s a workingman’s D tuner. (photo) Questions or comments, contact us at [email protected]. Thanks and LONG LIVE ROCK AND ROLL. I had the same problem with my RG7 soon after i’d bought it, unfortunately floyd rose bridges aren’t comfortable with big changes. When you are changing strings make sure it’s only one at a time, particularly when your using a different gauge as well. This will ALWAYS leave the bridge in a slightly different position to when you started, which is usually solved by a massive pair of screws in the back of your guitar. If you take the back panel off you’ll see what i mean. Now comes the hard bit (which could take you several hours i’m afraid! you might consider taking it to a professional…). You need to first detune the guitar downwards across all strings (ie loosen them all by roughly the same amount) which will (worryingly) raise the bridge further. Don’t do it too much coz the bridge shouldn’t really go above a certain angle. then you can tighten the screws in the back of the guitar bit by bit – they make a much bigger difference than you expect so only do between a half turn and a full turn altogether. This will have tightened the strings up again, so you’ll have to loosen them all off again. Keep doing this until the bridge is back to 0 degrees – it’ll take much much longer than you expect, so if you have no patience don’t even think about it, get a professional on the job!

Hey, I am looking for a good deal on a Gibson Les Paul. I live in the middle of a White Trash Utopia (Eastern Texas),which includes good old boy Dallas, and find the same numbers everywhere; $1009 for a Studio and a Standard is out of sight. It appears that all of the online stores and mailorder mags have a set price to publish as well. I ran into a rep for Gibson and he/she told me that larger guitar companies like Gibson and Fender tell the dealer what the selling price will be and will not allow a store to carry a product that is listed below a certain price. Hook me up, Chmper

My advice to you is…slow down!Try learnin the blues…first. It is the basis for 98% of the music you hear today. Why the blues? It’ll teach you basic chord structure, pentatonic scales and how to count(rythym). You could throw in a couple of easy metal tunes, since that’s your influence anyway.Get a teacher and just practice. You’ll be rippin’ in no time. Good Luck

really its the old saying "practise makes perfect"! the most important thing is to get the basics down- most of the music you wanna play is relativly straightforward- and its important to start with simple stuff .there are few shortcuts in guitar playing but here are some ideas: only play what you really like and can get into- when learning something long, focus on one or to short phrases and when you an get these good, learn more.. don’t jump in at the deep end- be realistic. I’m starting to teach people informally and i constantly say these things to them!!.. if youre really serious, you’ll get there in the end. 🙂

: hey guys…. : ALRIGHT…im planning on gettin an electric guitar and i need your help… : My choices are the ibanez GSA60…or the ibanez GRX-45…or the epiphone LP "90" Special Electric guitar? is that thing otherwise known as the epiphone les paul special…or is that sumthin else….BUT ANYWAY… The choice of guitar is entirely personal. But, if you’re serious about playing … then hold off for awhile until you can afford to plunk down about $1000 or more for a REALLY GOOD guitar — whatever the brand or model. Buying a lesser guitar never really does the trick. go to the guitar store and play some of the guitars in the $1000 range — you’ll see!!!!

for starters do you want everyone thinking youre too poor to buy a proper gibson??? epiphone are naff quality. so if you gotta choose either get a proper les paul or go for either ibanez. if you want my advice BC Rich have some WIKID new designs out (see gingers new guitar…neon strips!!!). but if its gotta be one of the 3 IGNORE epiphone!!! just remember, someone elses choice of guitar might not suit you! PICK WHAT YOU REALLY WANT! PRICE SHOULDNT COME INTO IT! : hey guys…. : ALRIGHT…im planning on gettin an electric guitar and i need your help… : My choices are the ibanez GSA60…or the ibanez GRX-45…or the epiphone LP "90" Special Electric guitar? is that thing otherwise known as the epiphone les paul special…or is that sumthin else….BUT ANYWAY… : PLEASE help me choose…or make a suggestion (under 200) if my choices are totally off…PLLLEEAASSEEE IM DESPERATE… : thank you thank you

I have a limited budget and am looking for a good, cheap meaty guitar for playing stuff from the stones to metallica on. Wondering if an epi LP is a good choice. Other suggestions are also appreciated. Thanks

My earlier response was based on my own experience with a 1998 model set-neck Epiphone Les Paul standard … currently my favourite guitar for exactly the type of work you’re looking at. Interestingly, today I picked up a copy of the British magazine "Total Guitar", November 2001 issue (they take a few weeks to get over here – Australia). They feature a comparison of five budget alternatives to the Gibson and the Epiphone is a stand-out top … they said it is "the closest you can get". I would agree with that. Next at less than half the price of the Epi was the Vintage V99CS. Just thought you’d like to know.

Yes, it will do just fine. Try to find a set-neck model … not one with a bolt-on neck. Ones made in the past 2 – 3 years are very good and come with excellent pick-ups. Any humbucker pick-up will give you the basic fat tone you want without the noise, hum, hiss and buzzes of a single coil. On more than one occasion I’ve unintentionally left my amp on overnight because it’s so damn quiet with my Epi LP standard plugged in … until you play it – then the full, meaty tone flows. You could do a lot worse than an Epiphone LP.

Hi,following the intimely and tragic death of Stuart Adamson, lead guitarist and frontman with 80’s Scottish rockers Big Country, i’m still reeling from the loss he was the first guitar player i ever heard one afternoon in 1977 rehearsing with a punk band called the SKIDS based in a wee town near Edinburgh in Scotland,i was mesmerised instantly, after great chart success with the Skids Stuart went on to form a new band called Big country who scored a hit album in the states called The Crossing, mid eighties, bagpipe sounding guitars with great playing and killer tones,my first guitar hero at 43 yrs old was found dead in a hawian hotel room in december following a continual battle against alchoholism and personnel relationship troubles,a devastating loss to our town and rock music fans throughout U.K. ,everybody has their own player who inspired them them to step into this fantastic world full of great music and playing, had to share my grief , sure you’s understand Georgie Wheelwright

I probably won’t help, I’m only 10 years old, but I’ll try. For guitars, I’d lean towards Yamaha and Ibanez. Ibanez are very expensive guitars. The Yamaha guitars are cheaper, and overall a better guitar. I have a Yamaha RGX121S, which is basically the same as an Ibanez RG470. It’s awesome! For amps, try the Crate GX-15R. I have it, and it’s great. It has equalization, overdrive, clean, and reverb. You can’t get any better than that. Moneywise: If you live in the States, that should pretty well fit your budget. Up here in the Great White North, things are twice as much as they are in the US. The guitar was $319 and the amp was $120. Hope I helped!

Try putting part of a deck of cards behind the floyd rose and make sure the nut is lose. When you string it it should keep it level. then tune and tighten the nut. After you tune you will have to tune it 5 to 8 times then lock the nut down and use your fine tuners.

My brother stumbled upon what he thinks is a custom Les Paul (electric) in blonde wood (supposedly never made) with three pick-ups, gold-plated bridge and tuners, rosewood fretboard, and engraved and signed headstock. In addition to being curious about whether his purchase price was appropriate, we’re trying to find out how to track its serial number and perhaps learn something about its history. Any helpful hints will be appreciated!

: Can anyone teach me to read notes for the gituar??? : I see the notes and they may as well be written in greek….so some help would be gratified thanks The treble clef (that’s the range of the guitar) has 5 lines. From the bottom up, a note on the line corresponds to E very G ood B oy D oes F ine, while a note in the 4 spaces between them correspondes to the word F A C E. If this weren’t complicated enough there are sharps # and flats b. sharps raise the note one step (or fret) and flats lower the note one step. There are also "Tabs" (tablature) with 6 lines corresponding to the strings.

: Can anybody tell me the difference between a DC5 and a MK3 Simu-class. I am thinking of buying one but I cant choose between the two. which one is best? If you prefer the more "modern" sound (creed, limp biscuit, and 99% of all other typical trendy non talented rap rock or rock bands around.)I suggest you go with the DC-5 because it’s distorition channel is taken from the dual rectifier.(most common amp now) The only good thing about the DC-5 is it’s clean channel is taken from the mark IV. Now if you want an amp that sounds different from all other mark series and is actually at minimum 2x’s it rated wattage for killing everyone, you want the mark III. Sure it is a little impractical at times, that is why there is a mark IV for more versatility. I assure you the mark IV is great but it is not nearly as original and interesting of a sound and thrill as the Mark III. The mark III , if tweeked right, can even produce the 50’s fender bassman’s beautiful clean overdriven sound. in other words the III will murder the heartless unoriginal DC-5 or mark IV/rectifier rip off.thank you, thank you, thank you, really your to kind,no really , i now i’m wonderful.thank you.MARK III that s—.

Obviously this site has no moderator or procedure sufficient to extract the trolls from the serious. Take Bob, for instance. He’s been able to ply his proclivities towards internet abuse with complete impunity. Even more unfortunate are the innocents who post at this site seeking honest information. Instead, as they scroll through the litany of dreck, newcomers here are greeted by the occasional infantile remark and adolescent insanity one might expect of wankers, and shredders. For instance, to exclaim that Mr. Harrison was formed of the female genitalia is akin to believing that non-music-reading guitar pickers are equal to Segovia. I rest my case, and move on.

When i turn ANY knob left /right it doesn’t change the parameters , or does the exact opposite from what i want . I’ve tried WD-40 Cleaner, thinking may be too much dust inside the knobs but it didn’t solve the problem. The Johnson Amp site’s webmasters said it’s a software problem, i’ve tried to update it several times but failed ’cause the "shaking hands with the device" takes literally forever  Anyone have had a similar problem ? yeah. I have only been playing for six months, though I am good. my suggestions are checking the guitar for bad traits, of if you have an acoustic get an electric(no dumb wal-mart ones those suck beyond belief) I recommend a fender guitar. These have lighter gauge strings and are thinner so you can see what you are doing. also try doing exersizes. learn easy then go to hard

What sort of help do you need? k well first off…my email is [email protected] i spelt it wrong in this email… about help…i just need an idea on how to put things together…i am practicing a lot with like finger tapping bends and what not for solo’s…but when it comes time to do one….i just find myself bending a couple of notes in one scale…i dont really move around the neck of the guitar…i guess i just dont apply myself a lot… i was also learning how to read music…i think in the long run that is a really good idea…i am teaching myself how to do it…..i purchased the "modern Method for guitar" vol 1 by William Levett….it is helping me out for now…. but i dont know..i guess i just need some tips on soloing…chord progressions…other things….i want to be in a band someday (rock) and i want to make the catchy melodies…i am just looking for some tips on how to put them together so the progressions and everything sounds good together…and since everyone around here charges money…i figured i would go get some help online where there are probably a million better players out there all around i am just your average beginner who has a million questions 🙂 thanks you…..later> Tim

Any suggestions on a great solo (electric instrumental) peice that i can work on? I play intermediate guitar, and need something to keep my interest! Maybe a bluesy thing, or Clapton acoustic sort of sound (even though i play an electric). THanks for the inspiration!

Try "Babe I’m Gonna Leave You" by Zeppelin, it’s got a decent "semi-easy" solo to learn, it’s good if you’re gonna start playing good solos. If you want a tapping sorta solo, pick a Van Halen tune. And Sweet Child Of Mine helped me a lot, most of it is pretty easy, only two semi-fast parts in, which is good cuz with practice they become easy to play, Good Luck. Knock yerself out – Joe.

If you like Clapton and want to learn a solo that’s interesting but not too fast try "Double Trouble" off the Album he did with The Band, Ronnie Wood, Dylan etc. etc. at Shangrila. It’s called "No reason to cry" It’s a blues song but the solos aren’t your typical boring textbook purist solos. There’s lots of interesting little changes with some really interesting bends in it. One of those songs where you "have" to play it all note by note, otherwise it loses it’s power but it ain’t full of super fast stuff that’ll take you a year to figure out and another year to get your fingers around it. If you need a video which concentrates on his fingers so you can see what he’s doing and where he’s doing it get the Old Grey Whistle Test recorded at the BBC I think during the seventies. He’s really pissed during the gig and makes some real embarassing mistakes, like slips into the wrong key once or twice but he gets through Double Trouble without and clangers.

That should be without "any" clangers.

You might wanna try "I Want You" by the Beatles. It’s on Abbey Road it’s not too tough the guitar mostly goes right along with the vocals

I have a Squier Strat and an Epiphone special, but i only play the squier. I’m looking to buy another one, I played a Gibson SG (Angus Young model) and i fell in love with it, but its like $2,000.. and for a 16 year old with a part time job making $6.15 an hour, thats near impossible. are the epiphone SG’s (generic of the gibson) come close to the gibson SG? i either want to get something i will love to play, and be able to have for a very long time. my thoughts now are on the Gibson SG, Les Paul Jr, or a Fender Strat. I’ll most likely order it from Musicians Friend since their the cheapest i’ve seen. I’ve been playing for 4 years, but no lessons, I play mostly Green Day, AC/DC, and starting to pick up the tab for hendrix songs. if you have any comments on the guitars i named or some other brand let me know. thanks!

OK. Im just a ten year old but ill try to help. The Epiphone SG’s, they’re pretty much like a Gibson SG, but cheaper and they have different names. The different names are for different features. (e.x.,small pickguard, G-400) I currently own a black Yamaha RGX121S. They are extremely nice. in the $300 Canadian range, theyre pretty cheap. They have a thin neck, theyre extremely lightweight, and they have a double coil, single coil, double coil combonation. Hope I helped!

Stay away from Epiphones they may look like the real thing but they are junk. Except for maybe the John Lennon sig Casino. The Les Pauls and SG’s are nothing like Gibsons, they used crappy wood, hardware etc and the pickups are aweful. They sound nothing like real LPs and SG’s. I bought an Epi LP a couple of years ago (real cheap) and it didn’t have anything near that classic LP tone. I put a pair of Seymour Duncan humbuckers into it ($500AUS) and it improved and sounded more like it should have but nowhere near the depth and power of real PAFs or P-90s for that matter. Look around and get yourself a used Les Paul Junior with P-90s they’re a lot cheaper, they really kick arse and because they’re a REAL Les Paul not just a crappy copy it’s value will appreciate. The earlier Japanese Ibanez Artists are great too, I’ve got one and it’s just as good as any of my Les Pauls.

Hello. I’ve just bought a Les Paul Standard guitar and would like to know which Marshall amp (reasonable pricing) sounds the best with a Les Paul standard guitar. Any feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks, John
