If you're just starting out, i.e. practically broke... get a solid... solid state/transistors/diodes aka not tubes ( or their archaic artsy name valves) They're cheaper, and usually lighter weight to carry around. You can find them in any brand name... Marshall, Vox, Fender, and even Mesa Boogie -- known for their big (and expensive $1000+) tube amps -- all have solid state amps. The lower wattage amps run anywhere from a starting price of @$50-70 dollars for a smaller practice amp, up to a few hundred for larger wattage amps for small clubs. You can also find off brand names like Electar, Epiphone that have 30 watt tube amps for under $300, and Fender & Carvin has some nice smaller tube amps @ $500. The catch of course is that they (tube amps) tend to be a bit more delicate. The tubes are made of GLASS! and once they heat up working, have to cool down gently!!!!!! Don't end the show and pack them in the car in the wintertime!!! Busted glass tubes will make you cry in more ways than one. While it's hard for the "average guy" to hear the difference in tube vs. solid state... There are many who swear that tubes sound better, louder, warmer, sweeter... all subjective terms but I tend to agree. I got an engineering guy at my church who was a radio engineer and worked in both tubes and transistors and he says you can make them both do the same thing.... Your best bet is to go to different stores, and either play them yourself side by side or let the store clerk play for you... some do like to do that. ask questions... read more of the follow ups on this site, and others (harmony-central is another user review website) read the trade magazines. Don't buy something you don't need because a salesman wants to get a raise or because Roger Van Flashy Hentrick plays it exclusively. If you want something funny and cheap, but doesn't sound too awful bad check out the "pignose" brand of travel/practice amps... not the best in the world, but they're good at what they do. For that matter, I used to have an old rockman "pocket amp" that was obviously transistors (it looked like a sony cassette walkman) but through those headphones sounded like an arena full of Boston. Good luck and HAVE FUN PLAYING....otherwise why do it?
