Guld Electric
I’m wondering if you can help me find a Guild electric, produced in the mid-80’s I think. I think it was maybe part of the X family. It was cream with black trim; the body shape was kind of a mix between an Explorer and the X-79. The odd part was it had triangular shapes cut out of the body, and I think even one in the head.

Bass Amp vs Guitar Amp
ALright, so is it really that bad if you use an electric guitar on a bass amp?...they're basically the same only the bass is capable of throwing out lower tones right?
Re: Bass Amp vs Guitar Amp
Well there is more to it than that because the guitar amps are built to shape the tone of the guitar in a pleasing way-- if done right. That is why Rivera amps and say a Carr amp sound different, they are acheiving different great guitar tones, and reacting to the guitars signal in different ways.
From what I understand you won't damage a bass amp playing a guitar through it-- but I've also been told that bass through guitar amp is a bad bad thing, but the tone, overdrive, subtle compression from the tubes, and the eq settings won't be what a guitar wants to see in an amp.
Re: Bass Amp vs Guitar Amp
the tone shapes are different and playing a guitar through a bass head wont do any thing except give it that chunky ballsy sound and the other way will work to you just have to watch your volume and have a thin bass tone ive been gigging my bass through a 60s silvertone guitar head for a couple years at with an eq pedal and it still none the less for wear the newer stuff is crap just remember that and the heavier the better

help me!
I have been playing guitar for about two months now, I have messed around with the settings for my amplifier but can't seem to get the sound I want. I have a squire 15??? It has volume, gain, master, treble, mid, and bass. Each of them go to ten. What settings do I need for a clean sound. and how do I distort the sound?

Set the amp up for your clean sound, and get a distortion pedal to take care of the crunch.
Then, when you want distortion, you just kick the pedal on, and, hey presto! Easier than trying to change your amp settings half way through a song!!

Re: Parts for harmony guitar
Hey, I have what I believe is a '66 Harmony Archtop that's missing a pickguard. Do any of you know where I can find a replacement one, or happen to have the dimensions so that i can fabricate one? The model number is: 1213. If anybody has one and can send me a scan of it in it's original size, that'd be really helpful. My email is [email protected] Thanks!

GIBSON SG???
I HAVE BEEN WANTING A GIBSON SG FOR A WHILE I WAS WONDERING WHAT WOULD BE A GOOD YEAR AND PRICE RANGE FOR THAT YEAR,AND THE HIGHS AND LOWS OF BUYING A SG THANKS, OH AND MAYBE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SOME SGS THANKS ALOT!!
Re: GIBSON SG???
I got a Gibson SG Special Faded a few months ago (maybe about a year ago), and it still amazes me. I bought it new for $550, plus a bunch of accessories (if you buy an SG, which I highly recommend, you should buy strap locks, or it will slip out of the straps and onto the floor, which is bad, although SG does stand for Solid Guitar, and rightly so), and it was about the best purchase I've ever made. I wasn't sure if I made the right choice at first - I loved the tone, and the look, but it didn't play all that great. But then I got it set up at a good shop close to me, and since then it plays like a dream. Seriously. Since then, I got it set up with heavier strings. I just took it in today to maybe get it set up again, but mostly 'cuz I was worried that the neck was drying out (it's really dry in my apartment), and the guy told me it probably didn't need another set up, just some lemon oil on the neck and some new strings - he could tell I'd been playing it a lot lately because the strings were rusted from rubbing on the frets or something. The last guitar I owned was a Fender Squier, and I never played it because it was such a poorly-crafted piece of shit, it was more frustrating than fun playing it. I can't guarantee that you'll play guitar more if you buy an SG, but I played about twice a month when I had the Fender Squire, and I play almost every day now that I have a Gibson SG. I'm looking into replacing the pickups - they sound really good, but the pickups on SG Specials don't come with covers, and I think I want a 498T for the lead pickup, which is what most SGs, including the Standard, come with.
First, I would say don't be afraid to buy a used SG. Really, they only sound and play better with age, so if you don't mind some scuffs and scratches, look around for a good used SG. That said, I paid less for my guitar than I probably would have spent for a used SG - for some reason, the SG Special is a lot cheaper than other SGs. The differences are mostly cosmetic - the Special doesn't come with bindings, but I talked to a guy at a guitar shop and he told me that the bindings are only cosmetic - they look nice, but they don't really change the way the guitar plays or sounds. The pickups don't come with covers either - again, I think the difference is mostly cosmetic, but in this case I think covers would be nice - they look better, and occasionally my high e string gets caught on the neck pickup, something that wouldn't happen if I had pickups with covers.
I know this is long-winded, but just one more thing - don't buy an Epiphone, or an SG knockoff. Most Epiphones don't have set necks, and so the sustain pretty much sucks, unless you get lucky and find one that has a neck that was bolted on really well. Also, the craftsmanship and electronics on USA Gibsons are top-notch. They don't set them up very well out of the factory, but for $20 or $25, you can take it to a trustworthy guitar shop and have them set it up right.
The SG looks like a million bucks and sounds even better, take it from this satisfied customer.
Re: GIBSON SG???
A '78 Gibson for $450? "Like new in condition"? Holy shit, did you get an incredible deal. More like winning the lottery than getting a bargain. The place I go to get my guitar set up was selling a USED Gibson SG Standard (probably made around 1995 or 2000) for $1,000 ; older (like 60's or 70's) used guitars, especially something like a Gibson SG, are often considered "vintage," so guitar shops tend to sell them for more than what it would cost new, ESPECIALLY if they're in great condition, like it sounds like yours is. Was it made in '78, or is it a '78 reissue? Either way, you got a bargain.
The Gibson SG Special Faded may be $769.98 in the catalog you looked at, but at least in Minneapolis, you would have a hard time finding anywhere selling it for more than $600 or so. Also, as far as the "faded" part, the gimmick is that the guitar is supposed to look older quicker, like you've been playing it for years when you've really only been playing it for months, kinda like when they were selling Levi's jeans by telling people they would look broken in after just a few washes. I've had my SG Special Faded for almost half a year, and it still looks like it did when I bought it, but I figure it will start to "fade" pretty soon, not that it really matters that much to me one way or the other. I read something on some website where someone was reviewing the Gibson SG Special Faded, the guy said that John Lennon (or maybe it was Paul McCartney) stripped the varnish off, and afterwards his guitar had a "warmer tone," but I can't verify that - I imagine the pickups change the tone a lot more than the finish. Someday maybe I'll put some "gloss laquer finish" or something on it, but for now I'm more than happy with it, and don't care if/when it looks worn.
My basic understanding is, with the Special Faded, they skimp on all the stuff that is "cosmetic" - the finish (again, no "gloss laquer finish"), the bindings (no bindings), fingerboard may be left over from some other SG (I understand mine was left over from the SG Gothic, so it has half-moons, which I think is kinda cool - whatever fingerboard it sells with is probably quality), the pickups (same basic pickups, but the coils, or whatever, are covered with paper instead of whatever they usually protect them with - doesn't affect the tone or play whatsoever), and "Gibson" is a decal on the headstock instead of embossed. Still made in the USA, with the same electronics, and (I think) the same craftsmanship as any other Gibson SG.
Something to keep in mind - the Epis don't come with the same pickups that the USA Gibsons do. The Epi I played, I still really liked its tone, so if you like the tone and the craftsmanship of an Epi, and you like how it plays, Epis will definitely be cheaper, but I would still suggest you go USA Gibson, including used, as long as you can afford it, and you plan on treating it well. Whatever you decide, good luck, I hope you enjoy playing as much as I do with my SG!
