: hey ive got an eletric guitar and my low E string bangs against the top fret every time i pluck it. it sounds like crap, does anyone know what i can do to fix it??? You could try increasing the action of your bridge. Or maybe you need a new plastic string guider thingy (don’t know the technical name for it!) that sits just off the fret board near the tuning heads. It could be worn. Or perhaps you have your guitar tuned too low.!

: I am looking for a good solid guitar for a beginner, but don’t want to break the bank. Any suggestions? Almost everybody I know had a Squier Strat as a first guitar, and every single one of them complained about how much it sucked. The strings always went out of tune, the pickups were brittle-sounding and noisy, and the action was horrible. I would suggest going with Epiphone, the entry to mid-level division of Gibson. Their prices range from under $200 to over a $1000, so they’re bound to have something to fit your style and budget. I think the les paul special starts around $150 or so. Anyway, look at local and online music stores for guitars and try them out before you consider buying them. What’s important is what sounds, feels, and looks good to YOU. You’re the one plunking down the cash, after all. Well, that’s my recommendation, hope it helps a little. Good luck.

Hey i am getting a bass on friday, and as im gonna be new to playing, im going for a cheap £140 one. the one im gonna get is one with 20 frets. ive seen other ‘standard’ basses which have over 20. Do the amount of frets on the neck actually is much of an impact on playing, or just a difference in the guitar not the music? Thanks for any replies Alex

Bill…those buggers aren’t very easily fixed! I had a box of them, and out of the 20 some odd pickups, ONE worked. So I autopsied them and know what it takes to fix/make them. I could take a crack at fixing your pickup, but it could be like a surgeon not wanting to remove a bullet that’s sitting 2 cm from the spinal column….it could go either way. It could be fixable, or it could just be junk. cheers, Pat F : i am looking for a pickup for a ’69 dan armstrong acrylic bass.any ideas or know anyone who would be willing to repair mine.

Hello Sorry to say that the Dan Armstrong guitar/bass pickups that eventually die are pretty much a solid block and cant be repaired. I’ve shown mine to Seymour Duncan,Lindy Fralin,Dan And Kent Armstrong, Bill Lawrence etc. and they all said sorry but no. Also be aware that the reisseue that was made from 1998 onward will not "pop in" and you will need to mod your bass …witch I dont recomend. I’m working right now with Curtis Novax( Novax.org )on making a killer clone and hope to get Dan’s blessing. Makes a nice paper wieght though;) Billy

I bought a 1986 Mesa Boogie Mark III (new tubes) about 6 months ago, and it’s sounded great up until I played a gig with it a few nights ago. Four bands used it, but the last band was particularly loud (master volume set to 3.5), and I heard the sound stop halfway through their set. It turned back on in like 20 seconds, though, so I assumed they just messed up with their pedals. Now I’ve got it hooked up at home again, and the Power light is turning on, but there’s no sound no matter how I adjust the settings. I plugged into the Effects Return Jack like the manual said to see if it would make any sound, but nothing came out. Does anyone have any insight to the problem? I’ve got some ideas, but I’d like to hear from someone with experience in the matter. Thanks.

Hi Max Do the tubes light up when you turn it on? Have you tried disconecting the speaker and putting the amp through another speaker cab to see if your speaker has blown? I’ve had a couple of boogie’s I played them loud all the time (8-9 master vol) never had a problem, they were always very reliable. Boogie’s are normally fairly bulletproof Other than that I would say take it for repair, don’t mess with it you might do more damage. "DON’T LET ANYONE USE YOUR GEAR!". That’s gotta be the oldest rule in the book. I made the same mistake. I borrowed my amp to a guy (a so called friend) he busted it and wouldn’t pay up! You live and you learn.

My first proper guitar…I still have it..and it’s a great guitar…worth way more than i paid for it now…the neck is the best part…a through neck like u say…and perfectly straight…never had a prob with this guitar…has a coil tap..which when u push in gives u an extra edge on overdriven sounds…and has like 4 switches…for pickups…u can have so many tones…like lovely clean crystal ones..i have only ever seen 1 other guy with guitar like mine…a red 1 .. and we did gig together…so they are pretty rare…hope this is of use to u…:)

I recently aquired this amp minus the speakers. When I hook the speakers up, it makes a loud humming noise and no signal comes through. It doesn’t matter what channel it is on. When I go through the speaker out into another amp, it works fine. The speakers that I have are only 50 watt and the amp is rated at 120 w RMS. Even when I turn down all of the pots it still hums at the same volume. It sounds like a speaker hook-up problem. Any help?

It looks kinda like the dimebag, but much cooler. A friend of mine that works at a pawn shop has a blue book on guitars & it was in there listed as a washburn HM (Heavy Metal)80 & had a value of $1800,, is this model rare?? because I cant find one anywhere on the web or in any music store

HI, I’m in the process of refurbing an old Les paul copy, i’ve sorted the machine heads ( and various other mechanical defects ) – but have a problem with the pickups ( one doesnt work ! ). I’d like to upgrade the pickups ( obviously replacing the defective one ) but don’t know what to go for. I’d like somehting a little brighter than the usual quite bassy tone that this guitar usually produces. Is it possible to get closer to a fender single coil sound for one pickup, and leave the other as a humbucker ( with more punch ) ? Does anyone have any advice / recommendations on what pickups to try. I suppose i mostly play bluesy / rock stuff ( HAve a strat and another LP copy – thought i’d try something different with this guitar ) Thanks.

i take it you want to change the bridge pickup? if you do want a single coil sound on a les-paul (ughh!!) then get a normal sized direct replacement for that pickup, a seymour duncan or better still a kent armstrong, and run the pickup to a switch so that you can ‘coil tap’ it, flick the switch and it uses one of its 2 coils, flick it the other way and it uses both, that way you get the best of both worlds. I can tune my guitar and it is ok (open string), but if I press the 6th String (E) on the 5th fret I should get an A note, and it is sharp. Other strings are not as bad… This was not always like this. I never abused nor dropped the guitar. Anybody ever hear of it. Thanks in advance

Check the intonation, you need to adjust the saddles on the bridge, if you play a harmonic on the 12th fret, then hold down that string (lightly) on the 12th both notes should sound the same, adjust the saddle for that string until they do sounf the same. Lee

Hoping someone can help me with this as soon as possible. A roomate owes me money that he cannot pay and will sell a guitar that I have never heard of to pay his debt. It is a Gibson WRC. I guess it is probably the closest thing to a strat they made, but I can’t seem to find any info on it. It looks very much like the Ibanez RG series. It was made in 89, and the serial number is 80039718. If anyone has any info on this particular model, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a million. -Dave

thats a difficult one because of the tempo of your live song against the tempo of the live version, are they short guitar parts you need to playback? if so you could try putting them on a sampler keyboard, assign a different guitar part to each key. Lee

I’ve been getting lessons on the acoustic guitar. I want to play the electric but people tell me that you have to learn the acoustic first then you’ll know how to play the electric guitar. Is that true? If it is not true what is the difference in playing the electric than playing the acoustic.

: I’ve been getting lessons on the acoustic guitar. I want to play the electric but people tell me that you have to learn the acoustic first then you’ll know how to play the electric guitar. Is that true? If it is not true what is the difference in playing the electric than playing the acoustic. Michael I don’t have a compeling reason one way or the other but I will ask this, What are your goals in playing guitar? Certainly every kid in the world wants to crank it up. Electronics is cool and electric guitars are, in my experience, much easier to play. But as you get more involved with the guitar, you’ll begin to appreciate the character of each kind of guitar – acoustic or electric. I have a Les Paul electric, a Guild acoustic, and a Yamaha classical. I want a Dobro or International to get a southern sound. I wouldn’t choose one guitar over the other – I use them all. It just depends what I need them for. I appreciate finger picking and screaming leads. I record music so I want access to every sound I can get my hands on. If your goal is to be a lead guitar player and you don’t think you’ll ever change, then electric is for you – playing an acoustic guitar will just boar you. But don’t sell the acoustic short. Some of the most intriguing guitar playing I’ve done in my life has been on acoustic guitar. my 0.2 cents worth

Killer guitar, drums, and bass. The vocals are good but need to be recorded differently – they’re a little too distant, though I know you did this on a shoestring. Maybe they could be a little more emotional – scream a little to compliment the guitar. I thought the lyrics were just OK, but overall, pretty good.

look down the neck, can you see a prominent fret? sounds like its lifted a little on the 19th fret, if you can see that is the problem you can take it to a guitar repaier and get the frets stoned (levelled.) Lee.

My Yamaki Concierto MC 400 was bought in 1975 in Tromsø, Norway. I tested several other classical guitars for nearly 6 months. But my Yamaki won! Easy to play, a very good sound and good looking for a very reasonable price compared to more famous guitar brands. I paid about $ 400 in -75. After having tested guitars today, I doubt I can find the same quality below $ 1500 (!). Do anyone else have experience with clasical models of Yamaki? Does the brand still exist? I haven’t found any Yamaki guitars in Norway since -78 (!)

i’ve just changed the strings on my mustang for the first time (since buying it) the bloke i bought it off has put heavy strings on it (10’s or 11’s), and, i assume, set it up accordingly. the only strings i had opn hand are 9’s. the problem is, the strings are buzzing like you wouldn’t know. will the different string guage make a difference? or should i get it checked out?

        Guest

Most old Fenders, I find, play better with heavy guage strings. On Jaguars, Jazzmasters, and Mustangs, my suggestion would be to go no lighter than a .10 or preferrably an .11 on the top end.

      • #92336
        Anonymous
        Guest

the strings you have put on are a lighter gauge and causing less stress on the neck and has caused the neck to straighten and create the buzz you are talking about, if you ask me 9’s are rubbish, they are too light, unless you want to keep the 9’s i would suggest you put back a good set of 10-46’s or 10-48’s, if you want to keep the 9’s then you will have to adjust the truss rod and probably the saddle height too, take my advice put a set of 10’s on, D’Addario do an excellent set. excellent, the newer type ones have better quality pickups, the older ones used to feedback a little and were a bit weedy, they now have ‘potted’ pickups, the body construction is as good as ever, 2 peice mahogany, they sound very authentic, i dont own one, i have played one or two. but if you want a cracking les paul ‘copy’ go for an 80’s tokai love rock, absolutely stunning instruments, far better than the epi’s. I bought a guitar from a second hand store some years ago (more of a flee market actually) and would now like to sell it on to help fund my next guitar. The info I give here is taken directly from the guitar it’s self – Gretsch TW-100T Traveling Wilburys. It’s body looks vaguely like a Les Paul but it has only 1 pickup and 1 volume control. It has a ¾ length bolt on neck with 18 frets. The body has graphics on the face side with a logo on the back with printed “Wilbury” signatures and say’s “designed by Gretsch”. It doesn’t look like any Gretsch I’ve seen before and it doesn’t seem to have the best build quality ether. No idea what kind of wood are used on any of the guitar parts ether! Hope this is enough info for someone to I.D the guitar and maybe give me an idea of value. If you can help I would be obliged.

I have guitar connected to my comp trough my 15W Marshall amp into the line in of my SB live. When i want to apply a VST effect to my recording the sound is bad and noisy. I use a noise reduction too but doesnt help much. I know it would help to edit the clean sound before I apply the vst effect but I dont know how. Please someone help

one thing i can think of is to try turning down the input level on your ‘line in’ mix. it is the one in windows, you have wave level, line in level, synth level, midi level etc, give that a go. Lee

do you use the headphone socket on your marshall to go to the SB card? if so the signal may be too harsh, the signal is used to drive headphones not the more sensitive line in socket on your SB card, do you have any amp sim effects? multi effects? if so use that, if not try going straight in on the SB card bypassing the amp, see if you get a clearer sound. Hello, I found this old amp at an estate sale. It was in VERY bad shape. I restored it. First time I have done this but it turned out pretty good. Anyway, can somebody out there tell me how old this thing is. It has two numbers on the back…004..and 00413. I will try to post 2 pictures. This is the only way someone out there can make a guess about it’s age so I hope they work! <center><img src=http://users2.ev1.net/~atrox/amp1.JPG></center> <center><img src=http://users2.ev1.net/~atrox/amp2.JPG></center>

Hello, Being relatively new to the Electric Guitar I purchased a Godin SD Performance. What I’d like to know is the aprrox. height of the pick ups from the strings. The pick up orientation is HSS. I’ve tried finding the relative specs but none seem to exist. I’d be grateful of any advice.

Ive answered this one before, move the pickups too far away and you lose the sustain, move it too close and you start to effect the intonation, as a general measure i would hold down the string on the 12th fret, and measure between .5cm – 1cm distance from the pickup. Lee.

OK heres my guess,`75-`77 , in those years gibson used a transfer serial number, and if you sanded off the paint then the serial number would come off too, before and after those dates the numbers were impressed on the back of the headstock, also it looks like a 75-77 model, my friend has one (with transfer No) and the bridge is exactly like yours, large square tuneomatic, your pickups dont look original, and are they schaller machine heads too? i think his had those, still a top notch guitar, damn good hat too. Thanks for the reply Lee. As far as I know, the serial number was the usual type on Gibsons, just that the guy doing the sanding, er, over-sanded it! You can still make out a couple of numbers very faintly if you look at it in the right light. Yeah, the pick-ups were changed, again before my time with it, and I seem to recall something about the machine heads possibly being changed, though the current ones are "Gibson Deluxe". This subject isn’t really one I know much (at all!) about… I just love the sound that comes out the damn thing!! When I took it to get valued when I was buying it, the shop thought it was stolen due to the serial # being removed, but the guy I bought it off is totally trustworthy, so the sanding story stands! It’s one of these things I’ve always wanted to know, purely out of curiosity. I wonder what sorta history it had before I got my grubby hands on it. Thanks again for the reply… both guitar and hat are doing well! cheers, Dave : OK heres my guess,`75-`77 , in those years gibson used a transfer serial number, and if you sanded off the paint then the serial number would come off too, before and after those dates the numbers were impressed on the back of the headstock, also it looks like a 75-77 model, my friend has one (with transfer No) and the bridge is exactly like yours, large square tuneomatic, your pickups dont look original, and are they schaller machine heads too? i think his had those, still a top notch guitar, damn good hat too. : Lee

have you changed strings recently?? if you changed to a lighter gauge it will cause less stress on the neck and cause the neck straighten and the strings to buzz, if its one string in particular on a certain place on the neck it could be a ‘proud’ fret in which case you have to have your frets stoned by a pro guitar repairer, could be your truss rod needs tweeking or your bridge sadle needs lifting, or the nut on the headstock needs adjusting, tell me more about the problem. go for the 100, it will be a bit louder, you have a master volume and gain for each channel, you should get a decent low volume sound out of it too, if you are in a band and you need the headroom then the 100 is the choice to go for. Lee

HEY I just bought an sg standard for $750 used (DAMN GOOD PRICE I THINK). I love it, the sound is amazing! i would say that if you could find a gibson sg standard in good condition for less that $900 you should get it. But yes gibson’s quality is not as good as it used to be but i hear that their standards have stayed good quality but gone waaay up in price.

I have a ’89 les paul standard, and a ’98 SG standard, they both sound very different, they play very different too, they are both absolutly fantastic instruments, but the one i play most is the SG, it has such a tone variation between the 2 pickups, always puts a smile on my face when i play it, go for the SG, dont know about build quality, but if i was you i’d save the money and go for a good used one. jazz and blues is pretty vague. if your talking jazz fusion, there are guys out there playing ibanez rg’s and what not. eric johnson plays a strat, and a gibson es335. mike stern plays a tele. but if your talking about traditional jazz, hollowbodys give the standard tone. you sacrifice sustain, but great fat acoustic tones can be achieved with full hollow guitars (ie, Es 137) semi hollows produce very warm smoothe sounds, but not as much texture. these guitars are ideal for mixing traditional jazz with rock and blues influences. my favorite would be pat methenys signature ibanez model.

Don’t listen to these IDIOTS! Any guitarist worth his salt would tell you tone comes from your fingers! You can have all the best gear but if you can’t play whats the point? I’ve got a USA strat with a hot rails pickup in the bridge and a standard mex tele so I know what Im talking about. The tele is different but it certainly isn’t crap! I can play all those great metal riffs on the tele and get just as good a tone maybe a little thinner but nothing to worry about. So save your money learn to play well on the gear you’ve got then invest in a good quality valve amp. Oh..and as for no playing rock on a tele, Hendrix played one on a regular basis! Hope this helps

first of all, ditch the tele, no heavy metal player ever used one, you need something with humbuckers, like a les paul, then get yourself a good distortion pedal, maybe a proco turbo rat. Lee

you asked the question i gave the answer, nobody but nobody who plays heavy metal ever played a telecaster, james may sport one, but show mw a pic of him playing it live, we are talking standard telecasters, 2 thin and weedy single coil pickups. you could try replacing your bridge pickup with a seymore duncan ‘hotrails’ humbucker, but for the money you would pay its not worth it, sell the tele and get something with humbuckers on, or start learning those country and western rifs! and invest in a nice pair of sparkly cowboy boots, yeehah. Is it because ESP are the best guitars you can buy? or is it because ESP would make a custom "shit" guitar if someone wanted it :P?..seems like they’ll make a custom for anyone..unlike fender or gibson. I’ve played ESPs and i’d rather a Gibson Les Paul any day …so why is it?

      • #95207

        Guest

the reason why a lot of metal players use ESP’s or have custom made ESPs is because ESP is a company that is committed to guitar players without having to compromise quality for some AAA flamed top piece of wood that is priced to look good. also, ESPs can withstand the rigors of road use with little effect on its usability. ever broken a les paul’s neck? i have. tough luck on replacing that neck while on tour – thats 2,000 bucks down the drain because its a set neck and gibson doesnt readily replace broken necks. ESPs are good because they are musician oriented at all price levels. no one should have to go without playing a good guitar because they can’t afford a back breaking les paul. me? i could have bought a gibson les paul but i opted to have 2 ESPs custom made and got a Paul Reed Smith for the more tonier stuff.

It’s because they have a tight sound for palm muting and machine gunning techniques, and are constructed so that it is easier to do these sorts of things. A Gibson may be better quality but it is harder to do the kind of techniques a metal guitar player uses.

get a set neck standard sunburst, the pickups on the newer models have got better, they have started potting them which helps with squeely feedback problems, if you do change them try Kent Armstrong, they are not very expensive and fantastic quality. Lee

I have this great-looking giannini guitar built in 1978. It has all the qualities of a great guitar – solid rosewood back and sides, solid spruce top and looks like a million. The problem is the sound is very weak and it has no sustain at all. Is this the D’Addario strings or is this just a lousy guitar that looks great and plays like a dog. It is 25+ years old and looks like it was never played.

I want to remove the paint from my neck-thru guitar. Is it a bad idea to be sanding (by hand) over the seams where the neck meets the body? I seem to recall someone saying not to take paint off near the seams as this can let moisture in between the wood and compromise the construction. Anyone know if that’s true? I can’t see the line where the body piece meets the neck piece being anymore susceptible to moisture damage than the lines on a traditional 2-or 3-piece body.. Thanks George

passive pickups are copper wire wrapped round a series of magnets, they require no electrical charge, active pickups require a 9volt battery to run them, they have a higher output and produce more gain. you dont see a lot of active pickups these days, a number of bass guitars use them.

: Any one have or have info on a Sada Yairi Classical guitar model 800? What would the top be, spruce or cedar? How does it sound? I have looked at several over the years. They are well contructed but they seem to suffer from fret buzz with age. Also the finish on the ones I’ve seen hasn’t been that great. It seemed way to thick. The later year models have a pretty good reputation but I think they were still learning on these early models.

call me a stuck up jazzer, but people rely WAY too much on fx. i walk into guitar center and im almost sickened by all the people with bad time, no tone, and horrible not choice buying into all these incredible fx. music is about texture, phrasing, intervals, rhythm, swells, tension, and resolution. i know im being quite harsh on some lad that only wanted to know what rig kirk hammet was playing on battery, but you know, i think you would find it much more satisfying to head down a different road. strive for great tone, which is acheived only by your fingers. big name companys will have you believe that tone is made by there expensive fx, but its just not true. again, sorry for the wicked post, im kind of in a pissed off mood at "wannabe" musicians. these are just my opinions and advice, but in the end, i guess its all about whatever makes you happy.

Sounds bizarre….but…imagine you were drumming your fingers (actually do it on your picking hand). Now vary the pattern your fingers/ thumb are making – eg drum your fingers forwards, backwards, in pairs, alternating, etc. You can practice finger ‘picking’ like this anywhere…. Transfer this to similar patterns actually playing the guitar – don’t worry about the left hand, just make sure thumb is on ‘root note’ of the chord and fingers are on top three strings (typically you don’t pluck with you little finger). For standard right/ left co-ordination, simply find a scale, anywhere on the fretboard, any key, and practice going up, down, back and forth with pick & fingers. Do it at the start of ANY and EVERY practice. Boring as hell, but works wonders! Hope this helps.

I want to simply pull out my Epi pick ups and replace them with Gibsons. I bought a nice Epi LP Standard Plus in Heritage Chery Sunburst, but just want the same hot bucker sound I get from my other Gibson. (Standard Les Paul DC plus Desertburst) It looks like they just plug in more or less, after you remove the pick up holders and springs. But then again, is Epi the same as Gibson? I am hoping to pull the old out and place the new in relatively simply. Any help or suggestionn would be really appreciated. Send to [email protected]- Thanks bro

I’d like to improve the sound and capacity of my electric conventional guitar but I don’t know because I’ve never tried before if this the right device that I need for my personal style. I play kind of new aged and new jazz tendencies music, never pure style but respecting and taking advantages of chords and harmony, but a t the same time I’d like to enter into the world of synthesis using my ability as as guitar palyer. I wonder if it’d be easy to compose and record my own ideas with a such relative affordable device. Any advising will be appreciated.

The GR-33 wil run you about $900 when all is said and done. I have yet to dig deep enough into it to use it’s full potential. The one thing I don’t know if it does is use the built in f/x such as chorus, delay etc. to enhanse the guitar signal. It seems like you have to use a built in tone at all times. The internal tones are fantastic! I suggest running that signal to a seperate keyboard amp or PA amp for best results, again adding to the cost of using this product properly.

I know this question must get asked a thousand times, so I apologize-I’m knew to the site. I’m a beginner-have being playing about one year (strictly blues) I’m playing a cheap Epiphone strat copy that won’t stay in tune. I’m looking for another guitar-probably used in the area of $400.00. Does anyone have any suggestions, or I’m a dreaming thinking I’ll find something decent at that price. Even if I had $1200 for a new strat, I can’t imagine buying it at this stage (kind of like putting a Ferrari in the hands of your grandmother). Thanks for the help.

Fellow players, I’d love it if there was a database of guitar sounds (FX, settings, EQs, etc)for certain songs. For example,"Time" by Pink Floyd. Gilmoure plays some lead fills with a heavy distorted guitar, but it sounds likes the mid range has been totally scooped out, its totally dry (almost as if the opposite of delay like the notes are cut short), and the distortion is a sharp fuzz type.It would take me a week to experiment and find that exact sound, but somebody may have stumbled across it accidentily and can post it. If there was a website where players can contribute settings for certian songs which would add up after awhile and eventually would have hundreds of guitar settings.Think of how great it would be to go there and find the settings for a certian sound you’re looking for. Does anyone know of anything like this? It would be a great resourse for everyone.Maybe someone can start one. Everytime I try to start somethging like that (I tried to start a "unique fusion chord" database where players can post wierd new inversions of funky sounding chords), it never catches on. DCO

The reason it never catches on is that, with the exception of ‘tribute’ bands very few people want to recreate history. If you really want to sound like someone else (everyone else) you’ll probably need to invest in a good amp simulator, a good multi effects unit and several ‘real’ vintage add-ons (eg analogue delay pedals and the like). Or buy the exact kit for each sound you want top recreate. If you’ve really got Gilmoure’s talent and can truly recreate the feeling that went into his playing, then use it. Don’t waste it.

pre-amp?? most unlikely, why would you want to put a pre amp on a guitar? some guitars have active pickups that require a 9v battery to run them, maybe you are thinking of this, dont think the signal would be loud enough to plug headphones in there, give it a go. Lee.

Les paul standards are very good, hold their money too, you know they are made from 1 peice mahogany for body and neck (except some 70’s models), go for a good 2nd hand standard, but if you were moving away from the les paul, try a SG standard, my fav all time gibson, it rocks. Lee

Moog MoogerFooger have 3 or 4 guitar pedals out, also checkout the electro-harmonix stuff, those pedals will give you something like a sax type tone. Lee

I have a Marshall Studio 15 with a manufactured date of 29-8-85 Serial number T24801. The speaker in this amp is not like other Studio 15’s I’ve seen. It has a square back with no manufacturer’s name. There are numbers stamped on square part; 30065 and 67:8334 I’m wondering if Marshall used a different speaker in the earlier Studio 15 amps, if this is the original speaker or if not the original what it is. The amp sounds great as is, just wondering what it is. Thanks for any insight anyone might have.

I’ve looked it up on the net and i cant really get a good understanding of what songs are in certain tune…like a song being in "A" for example…can anyone give an easy explanation of it?

simply put, it is the key the song is in, mostly where the singing starts, if it starts in the chord of ‘A’ then its in the key of ‘A’. genraly speaking you also have to disregard the intro. does that make sense?? probably not…

A scale is a series of notes with a set ‘interval’ between each note. Try singing the ‘doh, ray, me…’ scale. The note you start on is the ‘key’ . Play one on the guitar. Same thing. As Lee say, chances are if you’re playing a song the first chord you play defines the ‘key’. In most songs all the notes in the melody/ tune will be on the ‘doh, ray, me…’ scale, starting with the first chord/ note (assuming the song is in the ‘major’ key). A bit more.. The scale of notes has only 7 different tones (defined notes) in it – sing/ play the ‘doh, ray, me…’ and count them (the 8th note is an octave above the 1st note. Generally, you’ll find you will only play chords which lie on certain numbers in this scale – the 1st, or ‘root’ chord, the chord starting with the 4th note on the scale, and the chord starting on the 5th note (referred to as.. the 4th, and 5th!!). In the scale of C Major, the root chord is therefore C, the 3th is F and the 5th is G. These three chords (in different keys) make up probably 99% of all songs ever written. Hope this helps. Rick

i played a ‘Korean’ Tokai les paul copy in a shop, i was totaly knocked out by the guitar, tone playability, it even looks like the real thing, so i ended up buying one, and i realy cant fault it, sure the finishing is a bit poor but what do you expect for £399 new?, anyway there was very little info on these ‘Koreans’ so i got on to a Tokai discussion board, and the Tokai ‘Japanese’ owners are rubbishing the ‘Korean’ Guitars!! for being not up to Jap standard!! i thought how ironic, the copies are knocking the copies of the copies! its like the english class system. This post is to inform everyone who is interested that as of November of 2003, “Westbury guitars Inc.” is back in business and will have their product out by mid summer. These guitars are high end but affordable and not made at Matsumoku or in Japan, rather, right here in the U.S.A.—100% U.S.A. made guitars. Other high-end guitars say they are made in the U.S. and indeed are not. It is my obligation to expose companies like Brian Moor and PRS who have their guitars made over seas in Korea and assembled here in the U.S. and are legally allowed to put the U.S.A. stamp on their product. There may never be an Uncle Mat again but there will always be an Uncle Sam and Westbury Guitars Inc. realizes this and that’s why there will be a 100% USA made stamp on the new line of Westbury Guitars. (Not at all affiliated with Univox) Prototypes are being made in PA and LA and Westbury Guitars Inc. is very close to Ok-ing the design and will begin production in April. Low serial numbered models can be ordered through http://www.westburyguitars.com and the site will also have a ton of information on the vintage models. Westbury Guitars Inc. Hey, I’m looking at a Kona electric guitar I saw in a pawn shop. I don’t know much about electrics, but I do own and play an acoustic. The model of the guitar was either KES2T or the KES1T. I’m not sure which. They were selling it for about 150 brand new. Still had tags and everything. Just looking at it I thought it looked like a nice guitar. I was told though, that you should avoid any brand of guitar that’s not a major brand like Martin, Peavey, or Yamaha. If anyone else owns one of these guitars, I’d appreciate the feedback.

Kona is a fairly entry level guitar, but not bad for the cash, i bought a Kona bass just to "Have" a bass, but it is very similar in sound to a $300 Ibanez. plays well, straight neck, stays in tune… not bad for 150.

I own a FatLady 1A and got it for $1000.They’re so cheap(for an all solid acoustic) because its a new company. For that price youre basically getting a boutique-quality hand made guitar. They’re built like traditional Spanish guitars with no expense spared(integral neck heel not cheap bolt-on or dovetail joints like Martins/Taylors/almost any american/japanese guitar),which you wont find anywhere unless you get a non-factory built guitar(which will cost upwards of $4000).Sound-wise they equal or better the best on the market.FatLady 2’s start at around $1500,which is the same as the FL1 but with some cosmetic differences. If you’re outside of Australia, the cost of getting the basic model will be around US$1100. : Has anyone here played a cole clark fatlady 1 acoustic guitar? it mostly depends on what kind of music you are playing but most of the time bass is very important. And live sometimes you cant hear bass at punk shows etc. but usually when you can hear the bass it gives much better sound to the band.

Ok i know nothing about pedals so the answer to this may be painfully obvious but im gonna ask it anyway :P. If these multi-fx pedals exist with shitloads of effects…why do most people still use individual pedals that cost hundreds of dollars each?

      • #115661

        Guest

simple answer is the individual pedals give a better/different sound, i have a Bos ME50, it has some good sounds on there but nothing beats my Turbo Rat for a fat distortion sound, its down to personal taste, a lot of the individual pedals are shed loads better than multiFX. Lee

I’ve looked at listings of models/pictures of Daion guitars, and it seems like this thing is very unique/uncommon. In this pic it is the 3rd instrument from the left. I was personal friends with Wayne Bolt and might be able to shed some light on your guitar. I know your post is almost 20 years old now but Wayne sadly passed away back in May. Do you still have the guitar? I have the brochure that has all the models he built listed. Mine is the “Jerk in the box” Graphic. If you want you can message me on Facebook “damiano christian” and you’ll see my bolt guitar in my photos. Would love to see which one you scored if you still have it. Thanks!!

if its a gibson you want solid mahogany body in 1 piece, a lot of the 70’s ones were made from 6 bits watch out for those, got to be a mahogany neck, again there are some maple ones out there, and an indian or brazilian rosewood fingerboard, that would be the classic LP setup. Lee : tnx

Hello there, I was wondering whether there is a program which will play a guitar riff which i recorded while I can add a beat over it. I am using the usersample option on a program called Hammerhead Rhythm Station but it is difficult. You have to get the timing right, it becomes easier if you shorten the riff to 1 measure but it ruins the guitar. Also is there a program which makes the bass drum go in sync with the guitar like a band fear factory and loads others do?? Cheers for any help.

I am just learning to play and have a question about my acoustic guitar. Recently, I noticed that instead of making clear notes my guitar (a brand new Alvarez) makes a slight buzzing sound even when playing open strings (epecially Low E and A). The noise stops if I apply slight pressure to the body of the guitar. Is there a way to make this stop, or did I buy a piece of junk?

      • #91668

        Guest

It sounds like the ‘buzzing’ is coming from the guitar body- you should be able to tell by putting your ear close to the guitar and locate the noise. It could simply be part of the support structure of the body come loose. In any case, a decent guitar shop/ repairer will check out what’s wrong and give you advice.

What would be enough wattage for a guitar amp for giging about a medium sized place? WHAT WOULD BE BASS? THANKS!

        Guest

30-50 watt for a guitar would be plenty, ive played on half volume with an ac30 in a medium sized club, Bass Amp would be a dit more, around the 300 watt. Lee.

I’ve narrowed it down to either a classic white fender strat or epiphone zakk wylde les paul. the strat is obviously awesome, but from what i’ve read the zakk wylde les paul is the best les paul by epiphone. but at the same time, i dont wanna look like some jackass, using a zakk wylde guitar as my #1 guitar…everyone will think im a wylde wannabe…anyones opinion would be cool.

instead of reading reveiws, go to your local guitar store and spend half a day paying all the guitars in your price range, playability is so important, how do you know what size neck you like until you play them? play them on a standard amp as well, dont let the guy plug you in to some $3000 boutique amp. but saying all that if i was going for one of those you discribed i’d go for the zak epi, if zaks name is behind it its bound to rock. Well when a fan asked Zakk if the Epi was "worth buyin’" Zakk said something like "it better be, i told the epiphone family that if that guitar was a peice of shit they we’re puttin’ my name on it" : instead of reading reveiws, go to your local guitar store and spend half a day paying all the guitars in your price range, playability is so important, how do you know what size neck you like until you play them? play them on a standard amp as well, dont let the guy plug you in to some $3000 boutique amp. but saying all that if i was going for one of those you discribed i’d go for the zak epi, if zaks name is behind it its bound to rock. : Lee

how many watts would be enough to be able to pay with drums?

      • #90934

        Guest

depends how hard your drummer hits his drums, ive used a 15watt valve amp and kept up with a drummer, i would suggest a 30watt would be loads. valve or solid state the volume will be the same. Lee

Help ! I’ve got the Midi cable, Sound Blaster PCI 512, cable in goes into the GFX8 out socket and out into in. 15 Pin connectore to sound card. Fire up the GFX8 software, pedal is turned on, but the "online" button on the software representation of the pedal is not lit, it is always offline. I have tried setting the pedal into Tranmist, recieve, Middi out, Midi thru, PC map and PC fix, then click on the online button, it searches for the pedal but does not find it. What setting does the pedal have to be in to upload it’s patches to the PC If I create a patch, what setting does the pedal have to be in to recieve the new patch ? Can anyone recommend a software manual which is better than the onlne help manual, as it’s quite bare on content. The pedal is ace !!! Previously owned GFX4 and that was good too. Many thanks phil Mc

PUT THEM ALL ON HIGH FOR A MORE METAL SOUND AND PUT THEM ALL UP AND TURN DOWN THE LOW ABOUT 4 NOTCHES FOR A GOOD PUNK SOUND. BUT ALWAYS KEEP THE MID TOWARDS THE MIDDLE.

Hi. I’ve found a pretty good site, yeah… [cut] Jam22.net was conceived to promote musical style Jam 22 and publish original works of its founders. Two main ideas behind the style are: one – artists work on common projects over the Internet, and two – help other musicians’ projects by sharing their instrumentalist or vocalist talents. You are welcome to send your own musical creations for our HyperSonicJam listening room. Publication is not automatic – naturally, we will review the works and select those that fit into Jam 22 definition and have acceptable quality, both sonic and musical. So listen to the music and you may find that your works just belong here! Eventually we plan to develop tools to help jamming musicians collaborate, so stay tuned! [cut] So, wellcome
