Boss Jamstations

Does anyone have any info on the Boss Jamstation. Are they "good" or "bad" ?.

A friend of mine has one and I think it is a great unit. We practice with it. He plays organ (Hammond B-3) and I play guitar Gibson 325). He has a professional set-up on the sound board and Mackie speakers. The Jamstation's built in bass and drum players sound exactly like someone was there playing with you.

I just got one. The learning curve seems a bit rough, and it seems to be limited as to what kind of stuff you can do right out of the box. It has 200 songs to choose styles from, but only 10 or so have any real beats to use. I will learn more. I finally got Knocking on Heavens door to sound good.

I bought one 3 days ago and have been having a lot of fun with it. It is very versatile but there is a learning curve. I may have to make some cheat sheets.

The sounds are very good. There are plenty of rhythms and styles to choose from. You can use the preset chord progressions and arrangemnets (forms) or you can use your own. You are llimited to about 8 distinct forms so your songs could only have 8 unique parts which you can use in any combination. For example forms are the building blocks of the arrangement: Intro - Verse 1 - Chourus - Fill - Ending etc. Eight is probably sufficient for most songs.

Yu can plug in your guitar and record right along with your arrangement. If you have a recorder with midi sequence capabilities, you can sync the recorder and Jamstation and record the whole thing. The net effect is extra tracks and built in accompinment!

You will eventually need a minimum 32MB Smart Media card to store songs.

Musiciansfriend has them for $349. Guitar Center has tham in their stores for $399 which you can likely negotiate down to $349 if you bring in the advert from Musiciansfriend.

The only downsides I can think of are 1) it's a little pricey 2)it is not a true drummachine. I don't think you can create your own new drum rhythms (or I haven't gotten that far in the manual), 3)learning curve is a little steep.

I think it is a worthwhile investment for 1)working on your chops with a virtual band 2)song writing exploration outside of your box 3)creating slick demos of tunes

Musicians with no amps

I'm interested in learning of experiences and setups for muscians playing their guitars by going through the house PA via use of preamp/modlers. Things like PODs, POD pros, Digitech products, Zoom and the like.
An artical in this months Vintage guitar by Riley Wilson call Ampless in 2002 poses the idea of removing the guitar amp and using his POD pro commected to the house system.
I like the idea of traveling light.
Please responde to dave@ falkguitars.com.
Thanks - hope to here from you soon.

dear dave. i am a fellow player like you and want to travel light. i have had many back problems in the past and am through with toting heavy guitar amps. i have toted marshalls, fenders, etc. and it is not worth it now that preamps have gotten so good. that is why i was prompted to follow up on your comment. at the most i will carry a small 12 watt amp and use a preamp. i have the small pod and it is the best for tone. the pod pro has even better control but the same tone. but, i recently bought the behringer (pod copy) called the v-amp2. as far as tone goes, it is 95% as good as pod. the effects are way better though. you have the option with the v-amp2 to use it as just an effects processor, bypassing the preamp voices. they are all 24 bit effects and are very sweet. also the v-amp2 has a jack where you can plug in another device's line out and mix it with your guitar signal. the best part is it is nearly one fourth the price of pod by the time you buy the extras. pod goes for $299 to $349 with no extras. you can get the v-amp2 for $129.95, with a gig bag and footswitch. buy the time you buy the pod, a footswitch, and a gig bag, you will spend $420 to $470. all the stores are selling them. the only place i found one in stock was www.zzounds.com. loks like everyone is buying them also. i can tell you this. the saturated guitar tones in pod and the v-amp2 really shine. the clean tones in both are pretty bad if you ask me. one thing i know is tone. i have searched for it for over thirty years. the only really good way to get really good clean tones from pod and v-amp2, are to use the tube preamp voice instead of the amp voices. strats really shimmer through the tube preamps of pod and v-amp2. there is another advantage pod has over the v-amp2. you can download hundreds if not thousands of tones from the line6 pod website. you can do the same with the v-amp2 but they have only about seven tones as of now because they are so new at it. just take the output of the preamp and plug into a direct box and then into the house system. pod pro does not need a direct box. i hope this helps. best wishes to you and your's. sincerely, michah

Re: Musicians with no amps

It looks like lots of folks are going that direction. I agree with them. The amp modelers are the
wave of the future. Or at least a large wave among several waves. I am playing a Zoom 503 that is about
3 generations old. There's now the 505, 505II, and 606, for guitar amps. I sold everyone of my amps last
year to pay for medical expenses of an injury. I sold a 60 watt all tube Marshall, 135 watt Bassman, and a small handful
of smaller tube amps. Now I've got my Fender mexican Strat, a Zoom 503, a Marshall Bluesbreaker, and a pair of Sony Sports
headphones. It's a blast. I simply love this setup. Of all the top notch amps I've owned in the last two years, the only thing I
miss is a 60's Supro, all tube amp with an 8" speaker. I only bought the bigger amps as an investment to resell, and I couldn't
even make myself like them. The Zoom 503 beats them all hands down.
That being said however, there's a lot to be said for the small all tube amps, (class A). You can't beat them
for tone or touch dynamics, and you don't have to crank them so earbursting loud to get huge
tones out of them.
So small tube amps, and amp modelers are the new waves as far as I'm concerned. Steely Dan is said
to have used the Zoom 505II on their newest album. And I read where Buddy Guy is now toting around a
Fender Cyber Twin to live shows. He wanted to be able to capture all of the vintage sounds
of his new album "Sweet Tea" without hauling around tons of amps and tweaking between songs.
Just tap in a different preset and presto new amp.
The only people who complain about the amp modelers are those folks who are trying to run them
through a guitar amp that doesn't have a wide, flat eq setting. The amp modelers don't need a guitar amp.
The guitar amp is too narrow banded, and has its own distinctive sound that will only severely
corrupt the modeler's sound. An amp modeler needs a clean power amp without any sound
colorations added. They have amp cabinet emulations, resonance emulation, microphone
placement emulation. When you start tweaking these parameters you'll discover that they add some very fine
tonal nuances that a Marshall Stack set on drive will only messup and everything will sound bad,
amp and modeler.
So Yes, modelers are the newest wave, but don't tube amps are TKO'd just yet. I remember
when we all thought tubes were dead and transistors ruled the brave new world. Still, I think it's pretty cool when I can put my entire rig into a BRIEFCASE!

new humbucking pickup in tele

I am thinking about putting a humbucker on my tele at the neck position and was wondering if anyone knows if it's going to sound good or not?

Re: new humbucking pickup in tele

Putting a humbucker in a Tele is a good idea, but only if you are not satisfied with the crisp, bell like tone of the single coil twang. Do you have good single coil pickups? I built a Tele, and put in Vintage Fender Noiseless pickups, and I love the sound. I just don't attempt to play songs/sounds that require the Fattness of the Humbucker. If I were going to do this, I would put it in the Bridge position, to get better punch. I have an American Fat Strat, it has the Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates Humbucker in the bridge position. I rarely use it, because I love the Single Coil sound, but during a solo, or loud part, I will flip the switch. Hope this helps.

Re: fretted convertible

Did you find out any more about this? I read another 'urban legend' type thread elsewhere about something by steinberg of this order but find nothingt at their site ----- they would be the most likely candidates . Apart from this I can find nothing so far so I'm v interested to know your findings. Email me please at the address given. Much thanks, all best, jon:

A GOOD SOLO COMES FROM INSIDE YOU. YOU STILL NEED TO KNOW YOUR SCALES BUT ONCE LEARNED EVEN THE BASICS YOU'LL BE ABLE TO PLAY MIND BENDING SOLOS JUST BY FEELING THE MUSIC. IF YOU DON'T FEEL IT YOU WON'T PLAY IT. THE MUSIC MUST FLOW THRU YOU. (excuse the star wars ref) BUT THAT'S JUST HOW IT IS. PSYCO.

WOULD LIKE TO KNOW ANY INFORMATION ON A N-5 F HOLE KAY GUITAR BOUGHT IN THE SIXTIES. THANKS

starfield

G'day - wondering if anyone can help me? In 1993 i purchsed a Starfield semi-hollow body electric, cutaway guitar for about $500 AUD. Having recently valued it at a local store - i was informed that its rarity made it a highly sought after guitar. They quoted its value at around $1800-2000 AUD. While i'm aware it's only worth what people are prepared to pay, i'd be most interest in hearing anyones thoughts given that it's so hard trying to track down info on these guitars!!! Thanks.

Re: starfield

I'd buy your guitar in a second, but not at that price.

I would say that the price you paid for the guitar was exceptionally cheap even considering that most people (including me) only paid about half the recommended retail price for their starfield.

The fact is that starfields, while being the best guitars that ibanez has ever produced, were too tasteful for the early - mid nineties. I have an Altair USA Custom that i bought in 1994 (more expensive than yours but not as rare): RRP £1200, paid £665. I saw an identical guitar recently for £350 in reasonable condition.

Yours is a rare guitar though, I would pay up to £450 for a good condition one.

Not sure if this helps, hope it does.

I have to buy a fender, any advice???

I want to buy an american fender, i dunno if a standard one or a hot rodded or a deluxe, are they really different?

Re: I have to buy a fender, any advice???

I can only comment on the one that I have. I got a Hot Rodded Strat. American Fat Strat, with the Humbucker in the Bridge position. I RARELY use the Humbucker, I love the sound of the single coil twang, during solo's I sometimes switch over. Happy Fendering.

Re: I have to buy a fender, any advice???

I have the Hod Rod American Texas Special Fat Strat, and I love it more than any of the other 18 guitars I have. I like the Deluxes, but the noisless pickups are junk (in my opinion), and the standards are good. The earlier comment about the Mexican strats: They are good for the money, but play both, and I guarantee you'll like the American better. I must say, I had to set my Strats up to my taste. I feel that the factory set up sucks. Once it is set up to your liking, it is a fantastic piece. I would recommend the Fat Strat because it seems to be the best of all worlds. It really depends on the style you play. If you want to sound like Limp Bizkit, look for something else.

Re: I have to buy a fender, any advice???

: I want to buy an american fender, i dunno if a standard one or a hot rodded or a deluxe, are they really different?

I had some american fenders. Now I have JV japan Squire (and some other guitars) and this axe sounds just like some vintage Fs and MUCH better then most of the 80's and 90's strats. This squires were made just few years in the beginning of 80's and then stopped by Fender (guess why?) they have fender parts and are vintage reissues. If you can find one buy it! Search web to find more about those beasts. My opinion is the Fenders are mostly overpriced, and lot of them are crap (good vintage = $$$$)consider buying Strat-like guitar from another manufactor. You should have experience in Fenders to find good one, they are uncosistent in quality and sound.

Re: I have to buy a fender, any advice???

why buy a fender when you can buy a gibson LP

Re: I have to buy a fender, any advice???

: why buy a fender when you can buy a gibson LP

DEPENDS ON THE MUSIC YOU PLAY. STRATS HAVE BEEN AROUND FOR YEARS PLAYING MUSIC MUCH CHEAPER THAN GIBSON.MOST OF US THAT LIKE THE SINGLE COIL SOUND GO WITH STRATS.I AM LEFT HANDED, AND OWN 1-LES PAUL,2-AMER.STRATS AND A 1983 TELECASTER. THEY ARE ALL GOOD,BUT FOR ME I ENJOY PLAYING THE TELE.IN THE SHOPS IN HOUSTON YOU SEE MANY PEOPLE CHANGING THEIR PICKUP OUT ON A GIBSON TO GET THE SINGLE COIL SOUND,WHY NOT BUY ONE TO BEGIN WITH?

Re: I have to buy a fender, any advice???

i have tried many fenders. i bought the american standard and had it hopped up with pickups and a friend bought the mexican and it was just as good for one fourth of what i spent. the mexican standard strat is the most for the money. it plays as good as the deluxes and american standards but less than half the money. hard to beat for $349. if you want a humbucker get the fat strat mexican.

Reporters Wanted

I'm looking for reporters who would like to run a page on their local music scene. What it will involve is going to see local bands, reviewing music, interviewing bands etc. Our reporters usually get free passes to gigs etc, and so there are benefits to this.

The page needs to be updated once a month, with reports being sent to me by e-mail and then being published and put online within 1 week. We are currently looking at ways to have the articles fully printed and distributed, at the moment it looks like we will ask our users to print of copies and hand them out at gigs etc.

Anyone can get involved, for more info, goto http://www.dot-bands.com/forums

Thanks
Paul

Re: Reporters Wanted

Hey that's cool. I'll just submit reviews of my band and my mates bands every week!

READING THIS MESSAGE WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE FOREVER
!!!!!!PLEASE READ THIS ALL!!!!!!!!!
!!!!IT HELPED ME & IT CAN HELP YOU!!!!
!!!! NOT A SCAM !!!!
!!!I REPEAT NOT A SCAM!!!
THIS ONLY COST YOU A 6.00 CASH !!!INVESTMENT!!!
IT DOES WORK
!!!PLEASE READ ALL!!!
I found this on a bulletin board and decided to try it. A little
while back, I was browsing through newsgroups, just like you are now,
and came across an article similar to this that said you could make
thousands of dollars within weeks with only an initial investment of
$6.00! So I thought, "Yeah right, this must be a scam", but
like most of us, I was curious, so I kept reading. Anyway, it said
that you send $1.00 to each of the 6 names and address stated in the
article. You then place your own name and address in the bottom of
the list at #6, and post the article in at least 200 newsgroups.
(There are thousands) No catch, that was it. So after thinking it
over, and talking to a few people first, I thought about trying it. I
figured: "what have I got to lose except 6 stamps and $6.00,
right?" Then I invested the measly $6.00. Well GUESS WHAT!?...
within 7 days, I started getting money in the mail! I was shocked! I
figured it would end soon, but the money just kept coming in. In my
first week, I made about $25.00. By the end of the second week I had
made a total of over $1,000.00! In the third week I had over
$10,000.00 and it's still growing. This is now my fourth week and I
have made a total of just over $42,000.00 and it's still coming in
rapidly. It's certainly worth $6.00, and 6 stamps, I have spent more
than that on the lottery!!
Let me tell you how this works and most
importantly, WHY it works... Also, make sure you print a copy of this
article NOW, so you can get the information off of it as you need it.
I promise you that if you follow the directions exactly, that you
will start making more money than you thought possible by doing
something so easy!
Suggestion: Read this entire message carefully! (print it out or
download it.) Follow the simple directions and watch the money come
in!
It's easy. It's legal. And, your investment is only $6.00 (Plus
postage)
IMPORTANT: This is not a rip-off; it is not indecent; it is not
illegal; and it is 99% no risk - it really works!
If all of the following instructions are adhered to, you will receive
extraordinary dividends.
THIS IS ABSOLUTELY
LEGAL! You are requesting a legitimate service and you are paying for
it! Like most of us I was a little skeptical and a little worried
about the legal aspects of it all. So I checked it out with the U.S.
Post Office (1-800-725-2161) and they confirmed that it is indeed
legal. Mail the 6 envelopes to the following addresses:
#1)Erfan Haroon
24335 Fairmount
Dearborn, Mi 48124
#2) Jeremy Patrick
P O Box 570632
Houston, TX 77257
#3) Anne-Marie Marszalik
212 E. Grantley
Elmhurst, IL 60126
#4) Christine Thibeault
P.O. Box 522197

#5) Sarah Olson
131 Idlestone Ln.
Schaumburg, IL 60194
#6) Ger Scanlan
4 Carraig Mor,
Lackagh,
Galway,
Ireland.
STEP 2: Now take the #1 name off the list that you see above, move
the other names up 1 place (#2 becomes #1, #3 becomes #2, etc...) and
add YOUR name and address as number 6 on the list.
STEP 3: Change anything you need to, but try to keep this article as
close to original as possible. Now, post your amended article to at
least 200 newsgroups. (I think there are close to 24,000 groups) All
you need is 200, but remember, the more you post, the more money you make! You won't get very much unless you post like crazy.
This is perfectly legal! If you have any doubts, refer to Title 18
Sec. 1302 & 1341 of the Postal lottery laws.
Keep a copy of these steps for yourself and, whenever you need money,
you can use it again, and again.
PLEASE REMEMBER that this program remains successful because of the
honesty and integrity of the participants and by their carefully
adhering to the directions. Look at it this way.
If you are of
integrity, the program will continue and the money that so many
others have received will come your way.
NOTE: You may want to retain every name and address sent to you,
either on a computer or hard copy and keep the notes people send you.
This VERIFIES that you are truly providing a service. (Also, it might
be a good idea to wrap the $1 bill in dark paper to reduce the risk
of mail theft.)
so, as each post is downloaded and the directions carefully followed,
six members will be reimbursed for their participation as a List
Developer with one dollar each. Your name will move up the list
geometrically so that when your name reaches the #1 position you will
be receiving thousands of dollars in CASH!!! What an opportunity for
only $6.00 ($1.00 for each of the first six people listed above) Send
it now, add your own name to the list and you're in business!
-----DIRECTIONS ----- FOR HOW TO POST TO NEWSGROUPS--------------
Step 1) You do not need to re-type this entire letter to do your own
posting. Simply put your cursor at the beginning of this letter and
drag your cursor to the bottom of this document, and select 'copy'
from the edit menu. This will copy the entire letter into the
computer's memory.
Step 2) Open a blank 'notepad' file and place your cursor at the top
of the blank page. From the 'edit' menu select 'paste'. This will
paste a copy of the letter into notepad so that you can add your name
to the list.
Step 3) Save your new notepad file as a .txt file. If
you want to do your postings in different settings, you'll always
have this file to go back to.
Step 4) Use Netscape or Internet explorer and try searching for
various newsgroups (on-line forums, message boards, chat sites,
discussions.)
Step 5) Visit these message boards and post this article as a new
message by highlighting the text of this letter and selecting paste
from the edit menu. Fill in the Subject, this will be the header that
everyone sees as they scroll through the list of postings in a
particular group, click the post message button.
You're done with
your first one! Congratulations...THAT'S IT! All you have to do is
jump to different newsgroups and post away, after you get the hang of
it, it will take about 30 seconds for each newsgroup!
**REMEMBER, THE
MORE NEWSGROUPS YOU POST IN, THE MORE MONEY YOU WILL MAKE! BUT YOU
HAVE TO POST A MINIMUM OF 200**
That's it! You will begin receiving
money from around the world within days! You may eventually want to
rent a P.O.Box due to the large amount of mail you will receive. If
you wish to stay anonymous, you can invent a name to use, as long as
the postman will deliver it. **JUST MAKE SURE ALL THE ADDRESSES ARE
CORRECT.**
Now,
each of the 5 persons who just sent me $1.00 make the MINIMUM 200
postings, each with my name at #5 and only 5 persons respond to each
of the original 5, that is another $25.00 for me, now those 25 each
make 200 MINIMUM posts with my name at #4 and only 5 replies each, I
will bring in an additional $125.00! Now, those 125 persons turn
around and post the MINIMUM 200 with my name at #3 and only receive 5
replies each, I will make an additional $625.00! OK, now here is the
fun part, each of those 625 persons post a MINIMUM 200 letters with
my name at #2 and they each only receive 5 replies, that just made me
$3,125.00!!! Those 3,125 persons will all deliver this message to 200
newsgroups with my name at #1 and if still 5 persons per 200
newsgroups react I will receive $15,625,00! With an original
investment of only $6.00! AMAZING! When your name is no longer on the
list, you just take the latest posting in the newsgroups, and send
out another $6.00 to names on the list, putting your name at number 6
again. And start posting again. The thing to remember is: do you TURN 6 (six) DOLLARS INTO $6000 or even $60000 EASY AND HONESTLY!!!
The thing to remember is: do you realize that thousands of people all over the world are joining the internet and reading these articles everyday?, JUST LIKE YOU are
now!! So, can you afford $6.00 and see if it really works?? I think
so... People have said, "what if the plan is played out and no
one sends you the money? So what! What are the chances of that
happening when there are tons of new honest users and new honest
people who are joining the internet and newsgroups everyday and are
